HONORING VETERANS
This Week TICONDEROGA
By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com
MINEVILLE — A company which began 40 years ago with the goal to help people find work while providing quality production celebrated the past four decades Nov. 5 in Mineville. Essex Industries, which is operated through Mountain Lake Services, invited the community into its Pilfisher Road site to show off their work and workers. It focuses on producing high-end canoe seats and canoe accessories, cedar picnic tables, camp stools, novelty cutting boards and pizza peels, with annual contract sales of approximately $1 million with customers from around the globe. “You can see how things have progressed,” MLS Executive Director Marty Nephew said. “We started with clothes-pin ducks up to folding canoe chairs and the other products we make now. We have sold items to L.L. Bean and many other national and international retailers. The folks take a lot of pride in the work they do and this work goes all over the world. This is a big day for all of them.” “It’s an amazing opportunity to show off the quality and witness what goes into our products,” Essex Industries Director Lisa Sheldon said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

TICONDEROGA Ñ On Nov. 8, the American Legion was flooding with people who gathered to celebrate Charles “Gusher” Smith. Smith, whose name is one of the 92 that appear on the original VFW charter dating back to 1947, was in great spirits as he reflected back on the years he has spent serving the community. Nov. 11 was not only Veteran’s Day, but Gusher’s birthday as well. At 94, the Navy veteran doesn’t miss a beat. The Ticonderoga born-and-bred Smith
went around the room, personally thanking each and every guest in attendance. Dawn Millington, president of the auxillary, said this wasn’t out of the ordinary for the man. “Whenever I go over to his house, he ends up a little teary eyed,” said Dawn. “He is crying happy tears, because he loves to talk about his past and how appreciative he is. There needs to be more people like Gusher.” Before a buffet dinner was served to guests, both the VFW and town of Ticonderoga had a few things to say about Smith. The VFW presented Smith with an appreciation award that was beautifully dis-

played on a wooden plaque. The town pronounced Nov. 11, “Charles ‘Gusher’ Smith Day,” and gave the man a plated declaration to commemorate the his day. Nancy Paquette, the Jr. Vice Commander of the VFW who took over for Gusher in 2004, detailed the veteran’s background and explained that his heart has always been dedicated to Ticonderoga and its residents. As Paquette gestured towards the guest of honor and prompted him to answer a few questions, the man quickly looked up from his plate. CONTINUED ON PAGE 9
