Little hunter scores big prize Father-son team bag eight-point buck in early season score

PUTNAM STATION | Just call him the Lil’ Deerslayer.

At just 5 years old, one local hunter has already helped fell an eight-point buck.

Proud dad Jay LaPointe took his son Eastin with him on an early-season deer hunt late last month.

The pair left on a frosty morning, with Eastin armed with a “can call” they pur-

chased from WalMart.

The LaPointes settled in at their favorite hunting spot in Putnam Station.

It wasn’t long before Eastin blew the horn, which emits a sound like a doe in heat.

“The minute we sat down, we saw a deer,” Jay told The Sun. The animal rubbed his horns on a tree and took off.

“He was probably 20 yards from us and I shot him,” Jay said.

Eastin was over the moon at helping his Dad rattle the 165 pound buck.

“He was psyched — he started crying over it. We were both crying,” Jay said. “It was one of the best hunts I’ve ever had.”

have the head mounted for Eastin. In the meantime, the family will eat well all winter.

A love of hunting runs deep in the family and Jay has installed a deep sense of appreciation for the sport amongst all of his children.

But Eastin, he said, is the diehard of the bunch.

Jay himself grew up under the tutelage of his uncles.

“Spending time in the woods, that’s about all we do,” he said.

The hunt was the first time Jay used a can call.

“I will be doing more,” he said.

Eastin has taken on rock star status amongst his kindergarten classmates at Ticonderoga Central.

Jay said he and Eastin make a great team.

“It was pretty cool,” he said. ■

TICONDEROGA | The annual Christmas Fair at the First United Methodist Church in Ticonderoga is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chairpersons Jane Bassett and Lynn Sawyer say they’ve been busy with committees and crafters to prepare for another exciting and popular event.

Some locations for each of the departments have changed from previous years so be prepared to shop throughout the fellowship wing of the church, Bassett said.

“The Fellowship Hall will be decorated for the holidays along with homemade crafts, craft supplies, wreaths, table decorations, the Gifts Galore Shoppe and ornaments for the tree,” she said. “The Bake Shop will be overflowing with delectable goodies and preserves to take home. A hearty luncheon will be served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring homemade soups, chili, sandwiches and desserts.”

Fresh balsam wreaths with bows will be sold for $20 each and should be pre-ordered by Nov. 15 by calling the church office at 518-585-7995. They will be available for pick-up the day of the fair.

Dawn Titus of Ti Optics accepted the award as 2017 Business of the Year from Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President Kristin Thompson.

“The 2017 Business of the year award goes to a business that is a wonderful support of not only the chamber but of the Ticonderoga area as a whole,” said Thompson. “They

Moriah budget way under cap The Town of Moriah projects a 2 percent tax hike next year

MORIAH | The state set an unusual 22 percent tax cap for Moriah’s 2018 budget because of added costs from dissolving the Village of Port Henry, but the town kept it to a more reasonable 2 percent.

With the termination of village government on March 31, the Town of Moriah assumed many village duties, but also got $350,000 in state aid for dissolution, Moriah Town Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava said.

“We waited; we met with the state Comptroller’s Office,” he said. “We worked on the budget without knowing what the tax cap would be.”

They were finally told it was 22 percent with dissolution factored in.

“Dissolution has been like an exorcism,” Scozzafava said.

“Numbers will change,” he said. “We’ll bring it down more. Rates will come down.”

The budget does include 3 percent raises for town employees and some elected officials, such as the supervisor.

The village still has $44,900 in legacy debt, which will be charged only to former village taxpayers, and represents health insurance for retirees.

Water and sewer district charges for former village residents will now be $290 a year for water and $420 for sewer.

A new sewer district was formed and an existing town water district extended.

TICONDEROGA | The final 2018 Town of Ticonderoga budget will be under the state tax cap, Town Supervisor Joseph Giordano says.

Pure evil

It’s hard to understand why anyone would take another person’s life.

It is Sunday night

By Dan Alexander and I sit here learn• PUBLISHER • ing of a vicious church shooting earlier today in Texas with the killing total still on the rise as I write this column.

We can make some semblance of rationalizing certain killings, even as horrific as the recent terror killings in New York City.

We can’t fully understand what’s in the mind of a jihadist like the one who recently rented the small truck and killed eight innocent individuals.

But sadly, we’ve come to regrettably accept terrorism with the understanding that these misguided individuals believe they are combatants in a self-proclaimed holy war.

As such, we can recognize certain behavior and provide some forms of defense and be on guard in certain situations where we sense a terrorist might choose to strike.

Still very unpredictable, but at the very least, we are no longer taken completely by surprise when such event occurs.

But to try and understand what causes a 26-year-old American-born citizen to calmly walk into a Sutherland Springs, Texas First Baptist Church and open fire, killing 26 and injuring scores more while they worship the Lord in His house is simply beyond all comprehension.

We have no defenses or ability to be on guard for this type of behavior.

We now have armed guards, locked, armored doors and metal detectors at many schools and office buildings.

Should we now expect to see armed ushers at weekly church service?

How do we explain or come to grips with this form of anger and desire to commit these heinous acts?

The only explanation is the existence of pure evil at work.

Much like the recent concert shooting in Las Vegas, we cannot avoid living and enjoying life. We will continue to gather for church services, events, school, celebrations and even simple tasks such as shopping and work.

We cannot shrink in the face of evil, but instead defy its will to control our actions.

We have so many good deeds taking place all around us every day. We must remember to embrace life in our free society while reaching out to all those who may be troubled in the hopes of helping them to reject the acts of evil that obviously compel them to take actions such as this. ■

Region faces tough choices as population ages By now, Election Day is in the rear view.

As reporters, we always try to read the tea leaves of the local political scene, looking at trends and patterns.

Over the years, we’ve often opined that it’s lamentable so many local races go uncontested.

This year was no exception, with scores of candidates across the region running unopposed, from judges to town supervisors.

People should have a choice even if the office is decidedly unglamorous — especially when so many stories come trickling back to us about rogue assessors, tricky supervisors and apathetic councilmen, among other intrigue swirling around your typical small town government.

Obviously the dynamics in each community are different, and we shouldn’t reach to stitch together strands of causation when there aren’t any.

But one indisputable trend is the age of politicians here.

Office-seekers in the North Country tend to be older than the rest of us.

The first reason is demographics.

The average age of Adirondack Park residents is just under 43 years old.

That’s almost six years older than the state average.

So it’s no surprise that our political representatives, well, represent that.

According to the 2014 Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Project report, the number of Adirondack Park residents younger than age 30 is projected to decline by an average of 14 percent each decade.

By 2030, more than one-third of us will be over the age of 60, making the Adirondacks one of the oldest places anywhere in the nation.

North Creek sewer presentation very informative To the Editor: I recently attended a public presentation on the proposed sewer for the North Creek business district given prior to the Town of Johnsburg Board Meeting.

It was very informative. It included adding other districts later on — also financing the project with grants, matching funds, loans, et cetera.

This will have widespread ramifications on the survival of our communities.

Actually, it already has.

We’ve already seen it as schools struggle to keep enrollment up; as churches labor to attract more than a handful to their weekend services, and as emergency service agencies fight to keep their organizations staffed with able-bodied volunteers.

How to instantly boost civic participation does not have an easy answer.

But it’s never too late to start thinking big.

We believe the fi rst way to broaden civic engagement is to pay a living wage for office-seekers.

Many of our elected officials are on their second or even third careers.

For them, they’re not holding office for the paycheck, but rather to give back to their communities.

It’s admirable they do so, and by all means, someone has got to do it.

But until localities can start paying a living wage, young people aren’t exactly going to be flocking to these positions, most of which pay poverty-level wages.

Legislators in Clinton County earned $17,500 in 2016, for instance.

It’s time we start thinking about how to boost these numbers.

There’s obviously nothing wrong with older folks leading our communities. As the saying goes, “Youth is wasted on the young.”

But young folks may offer a different outlook and perspective, particularly considering revitalizing our downtowns is one of the most pressing issues facing each of our communities.

Alternatively, as our population ages and contracts, we can start tackling some existential questions and take the opposite approach.

We were intrigued when we learned of the so-called Unorganized Territory in Maine, a huge swatch of stretch of land skirting around the state’s southeast population cluster.

“As operating costs have increased, the economy has stagnated and the population has aged and dwindled, a handful of struggling towns have pursued the unusual process of eliminating local government entirely,” The New York Times reported in 2016.

Once towns opt to “deorganize,” then the county absorbs those services.

Local officials’ salaries vanish, as does the cost of maintaining infrastructure.

Operational costs are then spread across the Unorganized Territory either in each county or statewide.

It’s an interesting concept — and one that makes sense, especially when you analyze some of the early budget numbers coming out of our small communities: Revenues are down, expenses are up, including health care, which continues to see premiums skyrocket.

Now we’re not saying we should make like the Pine Tree State and, er, deorganize ourselves — especially when so many of our small towns exist around themselves.

But for the rest of us who are struggling to make ends meet, it’s an attractive option — and one that should be weighed if we’re not willing to pay our rising stars a living wage. ■ -Sun Community News Editorial Board

Republican “tax reform” is a tax cut for big business

To the Editor: Congress has done it once more, and the present administration has joined in!

Tax reform is the name of the new way to

get the top one percent and big business and windfall. They also want to abolish the “death tax” which will benefit the wealthy! Speaker Paul Ryan tells us most Americans will only have a “post card” to fill out to file their taxes.

I have to ask: What is wrong with the 1040A tax form?

This is what the majority of Americans already use and a fifth grader could fill it out!

Ryan tells us most households making $59,000 a year, with four people, will see $1,182 returned.

The key word here is “most.”

Some small businesses will benefit but others will not.

One thing is clear and it’s that big business will see two trillion dollars in tax cuts. This is at a time when we are already 23 trillion in debt.

Our president told us he would cut our debt, not add to it. They also want to take out the deductions for medical expense, interest, state and local taxes as well as the miscellaneous that would cover those who had no insurance and lost their homes.

Yes, folks, the Republicans have once more proved they are the party of “big business!”

What about those in nursing homes and those with thousands of dollars of out of pocket expenses for drugs and hundreds of thousands on dialysis with high out of pocket expenses?

GOP tax bill will benefit the wealthy

To the Editor: The House tax bill will provide huge benefits for the wealthy and for corporations, while any benefits to middle-class taxpayers are questionable.

Numerous provisions will benefit high earners. The top tax rate does stay at the current 39.6 percent, but taxes on the wealthy will still be substantially cut.

The estate tax, kicking in at $5.9 million, will be phased out over five years. The alternative minimum tax, created to ensure that the wealthiest pay at least some taxes, will end immediately.

Real-estate developers, hedge-fund and private-equity managers will continue to benefit from carried-interest and pass-through

rules under which their tax rates are below the income-tax rates they would otherwise pay.

As a candidate, the president pledged to end to the carried-interest loophole.

Business taxes will fall from 35 to 20 percent. Based on past history, the benefits are more likely to go to stockholders rather than to workers.

In contrast, any benefits to middle-class households are much less clearcut.

The standard deduction will double, but the lowest tax bracket goes up from 10 to 12 percent. The tax credit for seniors will disappear. State and local income tax deductions will be gone, while the property tax deduction will be capped at $10,000.

These provisions will hurt many taxpayers in high-tax states such as New York.

Mortgage interest-rate deductions will be capped. Deductions for medical expenses will be eliminated. Interest on student loans will no longer be deductible.

With all these deductions gone, many middle-class households may actually see their taxes increased.

If Republicans really want to help the middle class, they could simply pass targeted tax cuts for moderate incomes, rather than rather than expecting us to settle for some future, vague trickle-down effect. ■

NCCC offers olive branch to county College seeks to improve communication channels with lawmakers

ELIZABETHTOWN | Members of North Country Community College were on hand at the Essex County Board of Supervisors meeting Nov. 6 to bring lawmakers up to date on campus activity.

“We would like to do as much as we can,” Dr. Steve Tyrell, president of the college, said. “We want to communicate with you as much as possible and plan to be here at the Dec. 5 meeting.”

“I would like to see these communications between the board and college as much as possible,” responded North Elba supervisor Roby Politi.

On the communication front, Tyrell said staff member Chris Knight will be creating a newsletter which will be sent to members of the board to provide regular updates on school events and issues.

As far as programs, he said the school is looking to start offering an EMT basics course in the spring semester for

both non-credit and credit-bearing tracks.

“We are continuing to look at ways to meet your challenges,” Tyrell said. “We our protecting our backyard because and will not give up a space to someone who is coming from here.”

“I applaud the fact it is going to be something offered and it gets the needle moving,” said Newcomb supervisor Wes Miga. “But it’s not a dramatic degree. Maybe there should be a critical care course or paramedic course. That’s how we move people fro the scene to the hospital and it is also where a great employment opportunity would be.”

Miga added programs like those would be needed within the Essex County communities soon, as well as outside of the county.

“This is critical and a huge opportunity for employment both within and outside the county,” he said. “We are not an exporter of talent, but we could be. These are positions that are just as much in need as are doctors and nurses.”

“That is something that will be needed over the next 10 years and we are going to have to the people who are trained and ready to fill these jobs,” said County Manager Dan Palmer.

NURSING PROGRAM QUESTIONS

Minerva Supervisor Steve McNally expressed concern that Essex County residents may be getting passed over in the nursing program.

“Are we turning qualified Essex County people away from those programs and giving those positions to Vermont students,” said McNally, addressing the Ticonderoga nursing program.

“I know there are a lot of kids from Minerva who are going to the nursing program at Adirondack and we want to know why they are not being enrolled in our county’s program.”

“We look at the scores and take the best of the best,” Tyrell said.

Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said NCCC needs to understand the college’s original mission was to serve local residents.

“It was for the communities of Essex and Franklin counties, and somewhere along the line, we have lost that focus,” he said. “To be very frank, there are 58 Essex County students and you do the math with what we contribute and the charge back program, we are giving a lot of money where are students are using very little of this program.”

Tyrell said the 58 student number did not represent the entire student body from Essex County.

“A lot may not go full time, they may go part time,” Tyrell said. “Others may not go to college right away. We are serving people in Essex and Franklin county in the hundreds. I see that frustration with the supervisors that kids are not coming right out of high school, but there are a lot of non traditional students who are utilizing our services.” ■

Few surprises in Essex County races Land bank amendment passes in a squeaker

TICONDEROGA | It was a good night to be an incumbent in Essex County.

All three incumbent town supervisors facing contested races racked up huge 3 to 1 victories over their opponents after polls closed on Tuesday night.

Ticonderoga Supervisor Joe Giordano defeated his predecessor Bill Grinnell, who waged in a write-in campaign in an effort to win back the seat he lost in 2015.

Unofficial returns from the Essex County Board of Elections revealed Giordano, a Republican, receiving 78 percent of the vote, and a write-in candidate, 22 percent.

“I am humbled by the vote of confidence in yesterday’s election and grateful to be entrusted with guiding town direction for another term,” Giordano said.

Wilmington Super visor and Essex

County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Preston bested Bill Sibalski 78 to 22 percent, winning a sixth term.

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi scored a sixth two-year term, easily routing Brian Barrett 74 to 26 percent.

Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague and Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw ran unopposed and were re-elected to four-year terms.

Ten county supervisors ran unopposed for re-election: James Monty (Lewis), Noel Merrihew (Elizabethtown), Tom Scozzafava (Moriah), Joe Pete Wilson, Jr. (Keene), Steven McNally (Minerva), Mike Marnell (Schroon), Michael “Ike” Tyler (Westport), Shaun Gillilland (Willsboro), Archie Depo (Jay) and Charles Harrington (Crown Point) will return to the Essex County Board of Supervisors in January.

BALLOT PROPOSALS

Voters resoundingly defeated a ballot proposition to hold a constitutional convention by a decisive 60 point margin.

A proposal to bar public officials convicted of felonies from taxpayer funded pensions was also approved by wide margins.

Despite concerns from advocates that the

controversy generated from the convention would trickle down the ballot, Proposal 3, which would create a 250-acre land bank in the Adirondacks and Catskills, narrowly passed by a 3.5 percent margin.

The measure, which garnered broad support by a coalition of stakeholders in the Adirondacks, will make it easier for local governments to access state land for public infrastructure projects.

Full returns from Essex, Hamilton, Franklin, Warren and Clinton counties — all containing large tracts of state Forest Preserve — came in shortly before midnight, putting the totals over the top.

DOWN BALLOT RESULTS

Ticonderoga Town Councilman David Woods won re-election with 775 votes, with Joyce Cooper and Health Towne winning seats on the board, 662 and 334, respectively. A write-in candidate received 133 votes.

Fred Hunsdon, Sr. and Chattie VenWert are not seeking re-election.

The landscape provided to be favorable for incumbents across all local races in southern Essex County.

Following a contentious campaign that saw the lawmakers come under criticism for their

votes on the Stewart’s expansion project, Schroon Councilman Roger Friedman and Councilwoman Meg Wood fought back a challenge from Don Miller, a write-in candidate, with vote totals at 307, 325 and 204, respectively.

William H. Tribou III and Thomas Erikson ran unopposed for town justice and assessor, respectively.

Incumbents in North Hudson were also re-elected: Robert Dobie and Marshall Gero were the top two vote-getters in a four-person race for town council, with 92 and 72, respectively, fending off challenges from Bryan Caza, 56, and Tammy Brown, who received 45.

Deborah Duntley and Bruce Caza ran unopposed for town justice and assessor, respectively.

Candidates in Crown Point and Moriah also ran unopposed.

Matt Brassard took the Moriah Town Council seat being vacated by Timothy Garrison, and Lucille Carpenter won another term.

Paul Mazzotte will return as assessor.

In Crown Point, Sherlene Simpson-Barrows and Walter Worth both ran unopposed for re-election on the town council.

Eugene Ingleston was re-elected as highway superintendent with no opposition. ■

Barbecue benefits Best 4th in the North The annual event is sponsoring a gala chicken barbecue

TICONDEROGA | Winter is approaching, and plans are underway for the annual Best 4th in the North Chicken BBQ on Thursday, Nov. 30.

The barbecue is put on by the Best 4th in the North Committee as part of the 8th-annual Ticonderoga Area North

Country Christmas Celebration.

The fundraising event will be held at the Knights of Columbus hall in downtown Ticonderoga, starting at 5 p.m., with take-outs available. Cost for the barbecue is $12 a person.

All proceeds of the event will benefit the Best 4th in the North Celebration, which attracts many visitors to the Ticonderoga area every year, in turn supporting local businesses and the local economy.

The 2018 celebration is July 1-4, with fireworks, parade, live music, food, vendors, rides, games and more.

“We’re thrilled to continue to partner with the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce in hosting this event during the North Country Christmas Celebration,” said Best 4th Chair Debbie Barber. “This has become a great fundraiser.

Without the support of the Town of Ticonderoga, our area businesses, organizations, community members, and the vendors at the event, this celebration would not be possible.”

The Best 4th in the North celebration costs about $30,000 each year, she said, so fundraisers are necessary.

“The biggest expenses for the celebration are the fireworks and the bands/entertainment for the parade and in Bicentennial Park,” she said. “The Town of Ticonderoga does provide some funding, which is greatly appreciated, but most of the money needed is raised by the committee.”

She said donations in support of the committee’s efforts are tax-deductible.

Ticonderoga’s International Paper mill is hiring workers

TICONDEROGA | A group of 17 Ticonderoga High School juniors and seniors recently went to International Paper’s Ticonderoga mill for an all-day career fair.

Mill Manager Jay Wilson greeted the group and discussed the mill’s mission, its history, how paper is manufactured there, and IP’s history of community service.

Wilson said he emphasized the importance of safety and environmental stewardship at International Paper.

He told the students that “doing the right things, for the right reasons, in the right ways, all of the time is the IP way.”

The group was with two guidance counselors and a faulty member and was given an extensive tour of the mill, including reviews of the woodyard, pulp mill, power plant, paper machines and finishing area.

They also met with production operators who discussed their experiences at the mill. The operators shared the wide range of benefits they have, from work relationships with their co-workers to opportunities for career advancement. They also talked about some of the challenges of work life at IP, including shift work.

IP Operations Manager Tim Stocker and Human Resources Specialist Matt Maneri

talked with the students about job opportunities.

They told them the mill is currently hiring for full-time entry level positions at a starting wage of $15.09 per hour, with a competitive array of benefits including a 401K plan, retirement, and health benefits.

Stocker and Maneri explained that for the typical new hire wage rates quickly increase.

They said that is not unusual for operators to earn more than $18 per hour within six

months of employment.

At the end of the day, Wilson presented each student and counselor with a gift pack that included a ream of Hammermill paper made at the mill.

“With the success of this career day, the plant intends to conduct outreaches to other area schools to foster a continuing relationship with students and teachers in Essex County,” he said. ■

Elizabeth St. property to be torn down County will look to sell vacant lot

ELIZABETHTOWN | The Essex County Board of Supervisors are moving ahead with a plan to tear down a property in the hamlet of Port Henry which the DPW office has deemed unsafe.

Following a report from Deputy Public Works Superintendent Jim Dougan, the board voted 14-3 during its Nov. 6 meeting to level a property on Elizabeth Street and sell it as a vacant lot in the tax sale following this month.

“When we were working on another project on Elizabeth Street, this building we are talking about now was saying

in the breeze,” Dougan said of the property in question. “I can’t tell you when it is going to come down, but it is going to fall down. My concern is where it is going to fall,” “It is a dangerous building and it is now considered a public health hazard,” said Essex County Vice Chairman Shaun Gillilland.

The county will look for a trio of bids to do the work, not to exceed $30,000, with the town of Moriah throwing in extra help wherever they can.

“Because this building is in such bad shape, we need to do something,” said Essex County Attorney Dan Manning.

“I said we needed to look at it and now that we have, it is in such bad shape and something has to be done. Someone gets hurt, you’ll wish someone had torn it down.”

Chesterfield Supervisor Gerald Morrow agreed.

“We better do this because if someone does get hurt

there and we own it, then we are not going to have a leg to stand on,” he said.

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi said he felt tearing the building down before selling the property was the smarter move.

“No one is going to buy this building under these conditions unless there is gold underneath,” Politi said.

“Let us put the bids out, let us tear the building down, and let’s put the vacant lot into the auction which will tell us what a vacant property would go for,” said County Manager Dan Palmer In the vote, supervisors Noel Merrihew (Elizabethtown), Jim Monty (Lewis), and Michael Tyler (Westport) voted against the motion.

“You are now taking care of this property and there are other properties in just as bad if shape in other towns and you are telling them to wait for a plan,” Tyler said. ■

Town of Moriah wants to save Henry Garage The historic Henry Garage could get a new lease on life with a grant

“He feels the building could receive a grant under Restore New York for $1 million,” Scozzafava said. “That building is not practical as a firehouse.”

The town owns the building, and Scozzafava said they’d have to find a new home for Port Henry Fire Department, which currently occupies the place.

It’s a huge building and only a small portion is used for the fire company, he said.

The board voted to contract with Keil to do a $1 million grant application for the old Henry Garage.

There’s no charge for the application, Scozzafava said, and Keil would charge a total of $6,000 if the project gets funded.

MORIAH | The Town of Moriah wants to save the historic Henry Garage that is home to Port Henry Volunteer Fire Department.

Historic architect Fred Keil reviewed the three-story former Henry Garage, Moriah Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava said at a recent Town Council meeting.

“The structure was sound,” Scozzafava said.

He said the Mineville VFW got a $100,000 state historic restoration grant for new windows and roof and a generator.

“That building is not only a historical structure, but critical to that area up there,” Scozzafava said. “They need the work.”

State Sen. Betty Little’s office helped with the grant, he said.

The Port Henry Main Street west side sidewalks design was approved by the state Department of Transportation, which is funding the replacement work with a $100,000 grant.

“They (DOT) have to let us know where they want to put conduits for the new lamp posts,” Scozzafava said. “We finally got the design done.”

He said they hope to do it before winter, and if not, then finish in the spring.

Paraglide New England submitted a fee proposal to the town for use of the Point at the Bulwagga Bay Campground the town owns on Lake Champlain.

The company would pay the town $7 for each solo flight, and $5 for tandem flights.

Paraglide New England provided a $2 million insurance certificate.

“They want to go down there if weather permits,” Scozzafava said. “There’s a lot of interest in it. Right now they’re not charging (users).”

The board voted 4-0 to allow them to use the Point for the rest of 2017, with Councilor Luci Carpenter absent. ■

Small Business Day big in Port Henry Port Henry and Moriah businesses will have specials on Nov. 27

PORT HENRY | Stores in Moriah and Port Henry are uniting to offer specials for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 27.

So far, 11 businesses have signed up to participate in Small Business Saturday, Moriah Chamber of Commerce President Cathy Sprague said.

“A complete list will be at each business, at the chamber office, and on our Facebook page,” she said. “The list will have all the specials. More places are signing up every day.”

She said one business may offer free coffee with a sandwich, like the Red Brick Cafe is, or a percentage off a purchase.

“This is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the day after Black Friday, and one of the busiest shopping days of the year,” Sprague said. “It’s our second year of doing this and last year was great.”

The Moriah Chamber of Commerce office on Main Street in Port Henry will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day to help shoppers and hand out lists, she said.

The deals are offered all-day on Saturday, Nov. 27, during each place’s regular business hours.

The national shopping day is sponsored by American Express. ■

CROWN POINT | A nationally-recognized life coach recently visited Crown Point Central School to speak with students.

Motivational speaker Jeff Yalden was at the school to help pupils in grades 7 through 12.

Principal Tara Celotti said the visit was a great experience for students.

“He brought his wonderful message, which was over 25 years in the making, and it hit very close to home with the students,” she said. “His knowledge, experience and direct focus on making the best choices was delivered powerfully and made it easily understandable for students to receive the message. It was over a decade since he was at Crown Point previously and we were very happy to have him back.”

Based in Cape Cod, Mass., Yalden is the author of the Amazon best seller, “Boom,” about preventing teen suicides.

Yalden says suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. He was hospitalized for suicidal behavior at the age of 17 and again at 22.

While he was serving in the military, one of his subordinates committed suicide in front of him.

Lady Vikings soccer ready for Cortland Soccer team makes first ever trip to Final Four

PORT HENRY | For Maddie Olcott and several members of the Moriah Vikings varsity soccer team, making history is nothing new to them.

Last March, a number of the ladies who make up the soccer roster earned the school’s first trip to the NYSPHSAA girl’s basketball final four.

Last Saturday, they broke open the record books again, becoming the first girl’s soccer team in school history to make a NYSPHSAA Final Four.

“I’m not sure 100 percent that it has sunk in yet,” coach Christina Slattery said. “I can say that for myself that it hasn’t completely sunk in yet. I’m not sure that they get how amazing this is because I don’t get it yet.”

“I have never have thought about it until I went home on Saturday and my dad said that you’re so lucky you have accomplished all these things,” Olcott said. “He said we

never did this when he was in school and I thought about it, we are lucky to have been there and to win multiple titles like that.”

The Vikings scored a 3-2 win over EdwardsKnox at Plattsburgh High School Nov. 4 to advance to the Final Four, as Juliette Baker, Stephania Zelinski and Olcott each scored in the win, with Zelinski scoring an equalizer with her team down 2-1 in the second half and Olcott scoring the game-winning goal.

It was the second time in as many weeks the Vikings faced a deficit and won, trailing 3-1 to Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport in the sectional finals.

“I just feel like they can play,” Slattery said about the comeback. “It doesn’t matter what the score is, they will keep playing.”

The Vikings will now play Poland, a state finalist from a year ago, on Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m. at Homer High School in the Cortland area.

“I think we are going to do the same thing that we normally do,” Slattery said. “If we need to adjust, then we will adjust.”

“The key is just to have fun,” Olcott said.

“Obviously we lost our final four game in basketball and that sucked. But just to get there is an accomplishment in itself. I do think we can win this game. I don’t think we can pull anything from basketball. I just think that we have to want it.” ■

ELIZABETHTOWN | Saranac Lake’s Anderson Gray and Seton Catholic’s Sofia DeJordy topped the podium at the Section VII cross country championships Nov. 3 at the Cobble Hill Golf Course.

Lea DeJordy finished second in the girl’s race, while sister Savannah was ninth, helping the Knights with the girl’s Class D title.

For Schroon Lake, Ben Wisser made it three years in a row for a state qualifier for the small team, giving them a state competitor every year.

“This is my third year running and you pick up the strategies and mine was to stick around the lead pack because that motivates you to run harder and stay with them,” Wisser said.

Along with Wisser, Logan VanBuren of Moriah/Westport made it to the state championship race, as did Denali Garnica, who finished one place outside of the at-large runners but was given the sport when Seton Catholic’s Caleb Moore, who finished third in the overall, withdrew from the state meet due to a season-long injury.

In the girls meet, Ticonderoga’s Sierra Stacey made her fourth state meet, while Madison Flora finished one spot outside the group in her bid for a second championship meet.

The NYSPHSAA championship race will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at Wayne Central School. Full results of the Section VII meet can be found at finishright.com.

Vikings to face Cambridge in quarterfinals Moriah easily handles Tupper Lake in first state round

CLINTONVILLE | The two teams in the Class D state quarterfinal game this Friday have several things in common.

Both teams finished the regular season 6-1, losing to their main conference rival in week five in tight games.

And both teams then turned the tables on their rivals, entering this week’s game with identical 9-1 records after scoring convincing wins in their sectional championship games.

Now, second ranked Cambridge will travel to AuSable Valley High School to face seventh ranked Moriah for a trip to Middletown and the Class D state semifinals, with game starting at 7 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 10.

After their win over Ticonderoga, Moriah advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 57-6 win over Tupper Lake in a game where most of the Vikings starters were sitting before the first quarter horn blew, leading 37-0 after 12 minutes of play.

The Vikings passed one time the entire game, a 47-yard pass from backup quarterback Jay Strieble to Ryan Gumlaw. Maddox Blaise led the Vikings with 117 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Dewey Snyder had 95 yards and two scores and Ryan Flack added 76 yards and two more touchdowns.

Sam Gangi also scored twice, rushing for 41 yards, Starting back Conner Anderson ran the ball twice for 17 yards as Moriah out-gained Tupper 412 to 100. Jerrin Sargent added an interception on defense.

“It was a good chance to rest some of our starters and get some other kids a lot of playing time,” head coach Don Tesar said.

Now, the Vikings play Cambridge, who features a similar style offense to CVAC opponent Beekmantown.

“They will pull their guards in the wing T like Beekmantown runs,” Tesar said. “They have a lot of team speed and they run more of a straight wing T, but they will also run mis-direction off the plays so our defense has to watch for the keys and be very disciplined.”

On offense, Tesar said the team will have to keep the ball in their hands and keep the Cambridge offensive squad off the field.

“Ball control will be key for us,” he said. “We need to shorten the number of possessions they have because they can score quickly. If we give up turnovers or give them a short field, it could be a long day for us.”

Tesar said Cambridge is known for wanting to get out to big leads early, something they did in two of the last three years when playing Ticonderoga in the quarterfinal round.

“We have to limit their first and second down yardage and get them to punt early,” Tesar said. “We need to get them to where they are doing things they are not comfortable with.” ■

The Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 5:30 – 7 p.m.

This event is being hosted by the Ticonderoga Festival Guild in coordination with Ticonderoga Arts, at the

Downtown Gallery at 119 Montcalm St. in Ticonderoga.

“You can reconnect with area businesses and organizations as well as meet new people,” said chamber Executive Director Matthew Courtright. “Not only is it a perfect opportunity to network, but a chance to support another business/organization within the Ticonderoga Area. In addition, it is a chance for businesses to discuss common issues and concerns and provide this information to the chamber.”

Ticonderoga Arts Inc. is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to supporting local artists by promoting fine crafts and fine arts through programs in education, exhibition and sales in the gallery, said coordinator Jerry Cooper.

“We invite people to stop in and discover the work of local artists in a continually expanding variety of media including painting, photography, pottery, wood, textiles, and jewelry on exhibit and for sale,” he said. “Also, we offer or provide space for arts and cultural events, most of them free, throughout the year.” ■

Activist to trek from Boreas to Ray Brook Tyler Socash aims to send message to Adirondack Park Agency

NORTH HUDSON | Environmental activists often attend Adirondack Park Agency (APA) meetings.

But most don’t hike 25 miles through rugged mountainous terrain to get there.

Tyler Socash aims send a singular message to the state agency by walking from the Boreas Ponds Tract to their Ray Brook headquarters on Nov. 16: “Overwhelming public support” exists for a Wilderness classification for the entire Boreas Ponds Tract, he said.

“How many areas in the world remain where it would be possible to walk more than 25 miles through protected Wilderness to attend a meeting like this without once crossing a road?” said Socash. “That’s the possibility our children will have if we protect the entire Boreas Tract.”

Socash is a member of Adirondack Wilderness Advocates (AWA), a grassroots environmental advocacy group.

With him Socash will be carrying over 1,000 letters generated by the group’s recent letter-writing campaign urging the APA to utilize the most stringent environmental safeguards while classifying the parcel.

Nearly a year after the conclusion of the public hearing process designed to collect input on how the 20,758-acre tract in Newcomb and North Hudson should be classified, a decision remains elusive.

A broad coalition of groups have entered the fray, all of whom agree opening a new portal to the southern High Peaks has the potential to be transformative.

But they disagree on how much recreational access should be allowed, sparring primarily over motorized usage.

The APA has offered four proposals, each containing a varying ratio of Wilderness, the most restrictive category, and Wild Forest, the least restrictive.

AWA has endorsed none of them, and is calling for the entire tract to be classified as Wilderness, and the entire seven-mile length of Gulf Brook Road closed.

Socash, 31, is still mapping out his route for the trek.

Early plans see the outdoor educator starting at Blue Ridge Road and walking the length of Gulf Brook Road to gain access to the tract. He’ll pass through Ragged Mountain, Andrews Brook, LaBier Flow, Boreas Pond and White Lily Pond before exiting, where the Northville Placid-Trail will take him to Averyville Road towards Ray Brook.

Altogether, it’s a 40 mile journey.

Socash, of Keene, has ample experience: He recently completed the Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand, and the Appalachian Trail, efforts that also fueled his strong belief that open space is a rare commodity that is becoming increasingly rare on a global level.

“Traveling elsewhere, you realize how important what we have in the Blue Line is,” he said. “Boreas Ponds can be a crown jewel that gets protected right here in New York state.”

But upon reaching Ray Brook, Socash will not be met with APA board members deep in Boreas-related discussion: The classification issue is not on the agenda at

Other coalitions, including Access the Adirondacks, have also engaged in letterwriting campaigns to promote their preferred plans for the tract. ■

Candidates jousting for the Democratic nomination for New York’s 21st Congressional District were quick to pounce.

Emily Martz, a Saranac Lake economic development consultant, said the proposal “falls short of real reform.”

Tax cuts for corporations and wealthy Americans will decrease the nation’s tax revenue and expand the deficit, she said.

“We can’t allow a few kernels of support for the middle-class to distract us from the bigger picture of budget deficits and cuts in programs that are investments in America’s future,” Martz said in a statement.

Tanya Boone, a Granville-based union organizer and business owner, said the plan would raise taxes on local families who are already struggling with one of the highest local and state tax burdens in the nation.

“This will not create economic growth,” said Boone in a statement. “To create growth, we need to invest in infrastructure, increase access to broadband services and support small business.”

Don Boyajian, a Saratoga-based lawyer, called the plan a “disaster” and criticized the proposed SALT repeal.

“It is time for Representative Stefanik to stop sitting on the sidelines and stand up to Paul Ryan to prevent his dangerous tax plan from taking effect,” said Boyajian in a statement.

“Desperate, ill-informed candidates say dumb things,” responded Lenny Alcivar, a Stefanik campaign spokesman. “Before he even moved to #NY21, Elise has long been recognized for her support on SALT.” Gov. Andrew Cuomo also excoriated the plan, calling a potential SALT repeal a “diabolical dimension.”

Residents hit in the pocketbooks might choose to vote with their feet, he said.

“It affects the competitiveness of our state because to the extent you raise taxes in New York, you push people and push businesses to other states,” he said.

New York contributes more to the federal government than any other state, he said, giving $48 billion more to Washington than it receives.

And on Monday, Cuomo said a repeal would wipe away the past seven years of progress he has made in reducing the state’s high property taxes.

“As far as I’m concerned, this is President Trump saying ‘drop dead’ to New Yorkers because that’s what this is.” ■

Stefanik: Tax plan a ‘starting point’ Lawmaker still concerned about proposed repeal of state and local tax deduction

ELIZABETHTOWN | House Republicans rolled out their tax reform plan last week.

The $1.5 trillion effort to revamp the federal tax code has been branded by GOP lawmakers as a long-awaited overhaul designed to offer savings for middle-class families, simplify the tax code and reduce taxes for businesses and corporations.

Details on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are expected to be hammered out in coming weeks, and House Speaker Paul Ryan (RWisc.) has said he wants to bring the bill to a vote before lawmakers break for their Thanksgiving recess on Nov. 16.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) called the package released by the House Ways and Means Committee last Thursday a “starting point that needs to be improved to ensure that New Yorkers receive the tax relief they deserve.”

A chief sticking point for the lawmaker

continues to be the proposed state and local tax deduction repeal.

Known as SALT, repealing the measure would add $1.3 trillion in revenues, but would deprive New Yorkers of a tax write-off that averages $6,000 per family annually.

Supporters of the repeal argue that the revenue needs to be raised to offset cuts elsewhere.

Stefanik said she’ll continue to work with her colleagues in the New York delegation to improve the plan to address SALT, as well as offer tax relief for families and businesses.

Tax relief, said the lawmaker, has been a frequent topic of discussion as she meets with constituents.

“I encourage all of our constituents to read this plan and contact my offices by phone or email to share their feedback,” Stefanik said in a statement.

Stefanik voted against the federal budget resolution last week, citing concerns over SALT.

Albert “Uncle” J. Gates

MORIAH | Albert “Uncle” J. Gates, 91, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017 at CVPH Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 20, 1926 in Westport, the son of Elon and Mary Gates.

After retiring from International Paper, he spent his retirement traveling around the North Country as a photographer taking pictures of his beloved Adirondacks. Many of his pictures appeared in Adirondack Life magazine and the Adirondack Life calendar. He could be seen skating on the lake or riding his bicycle.

Albert is survived by a nephew, David Plumadore and wife Sue of Elizabethtown, and his niece Gayle Forget and husband Nelson of Apopka, Florida.

He also leaves behind 10 great-nieces and nephews; Jim, Patty, Bill, Tracey, David, Stacey, Fawn, Tanya, Tommy and Billy; and five great-great-nieces and nephews, Dustin, Megan, Brandin, Tyler and Abbey.

He was predeceased by his wife Barbara, his parents, sisters, several nieces and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers Albert would like Mass cards in his name.

Burial was in Union Cemetery in Port Henry on Friday, Nov. 3. ■

HAGUE | Anna Mae Perkins, 77, of Hague, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Hague, Nov. 23, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Mildred B. (Trumble) Fish.

Anna has been a lifetime residence of Hague.

She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Her greatest enjoyment was her family and she was the center of her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Allen Perkins; and also by one daughter, Jackie Perkins.

Survivors include her three children, Pamela Grogan of Hague, Randy Perkins of Ticonderoga, and Julie Myers of Hague; one sister, Gladys Pinchion, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the family plot of the May Memorial Cemetery of Hague. The Rev. Skip Trembley will officiate.

TICONDEROGA | Gordon James Marek, Sr. (Sonny Marek) went to be with our Lord on Oct. 30, 2017. He passed away at Heritage Commons Residential Health Care after a long illness.

Sonny was born in Whitehall on Sept. 6, 1927 to Grace Woodard Marek and James T. Marek.

Sonny is preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers; Ernie, who lived in Charleston, South Carolina and Billy, who lived in Tucson, Arizona. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Cora Hogle Marek, to whom he was married for 24 years.

Sonny leaves behind two step-daughters, Linda Joiner and Connie Hartley and three step-grandchildren and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

Sonny was previously married to Arlene Gandron Marek of Ticonderoga. They had four children; Gary Marek, now of Colorado; Darlene Marek Ball, now of Connecticut; Gordon J. Marek, Jr. (Jim), now of Lake George; and Patricia Marek Vowles, now of Arizona.

Sonny has been blessed with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny graduated from Whitehall High School in June of 1944 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. He served with the Navy Seabees in the Philippines for the rest of World War II. Sonny also played drums for the U.S. Naval Band.

Sonny retired from the Navy on Oct. 28, 1957 and joined the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 4, 1957. (Being in the Navy kept him away from his family too much.) Sonny served in Izmir, Turkey for three years working as a liaison with NATO; he fought in the Vietnam War for a year; and was stationed at various Air Force bases throughout the United States.

Sonny retired from the Air Force on May 31, 1971, and returned to Whitehall where is became a postal worker. He soon transferred to the Ticonderoga Post Office where he carried mail and became a friend to all for 17 years.

In addition to serving his country through the Navy and Air Force, participating in two wars, and being a mail carrier, Sonny was also a son, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

He participated in the Elks, Knights of Columbus, and VFW, even serving as the Commander of the local branch for a time.

Sonny came from a very musical family and played many instruments growing up, but finally settled on the drums as his favorite. He played at venues in the many places he was stationed and was a regular at bars and other festivities in the Ticonderoga area for many years.

In addition to his passion for the drums, Sonny also had a passion for bowling. He loved to bowl and did it so smoothly and effortlessly that he always held an extremely high average on the many teams he played on well into his 70s.

However, the perfect game always eluded him. He bowled a 299 on March 27, 2003, at the Adirondack Lanes in Ti — he was 75 years old — what an achievement!

Sonny will be missed by all who knew him and loved him, especially his family. God blessed him and us!

Relatives and friends called Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. A funeral service followed at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Mr. Elliott A. Shaw officiated.

The rite of committal followed at the family plot of St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga.

Lawmakers push to combat Lyme disease New York faces “ticking time bomb” as authorities grapple to formulate cohesive strategy

QUEENSBURY | The northeast is the epicenter of what authorities are referring to as a Lyme disease epidemic.

The tick-borne illness is characterized by agonizing pain, loss of memory and motor skills.

While recovery is possible, patients have said the lack of effective treatment options has left them financially ruined.

And the disease is only expected to spread.

Over 90 percent of confirmed cases nationwide are being reported from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Now state and federal health agencies are scrambling to hatch an effective response.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) is pushing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to make good on tracking performance indicators designed to monitor the disease.

The lawmaker has co-signed a letter to Acting Health and Human Services Secretary Eric Hargan asking him to include those metrics in the 2019 Congressional Justification from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“This letter is aimed to create specific, measurable objectives to track progress as we combat Lyme Disease,” Stefanik said in a statement. “The more we know about Lyme, the more we can do to treat patients and educate families to stop the spread of this debilitating disease.”

Those indicators include driving down the total number of cases, reducing the average time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis and increasing the number of tests that can confirm the presence of infection.

The metrics are important to help Congress better understand the impacts of tick-borne diseases and the effectiveness of agency programs for surveillance, prevention and control, said the letter, which was spearheaded by Rep. John Faso (R-Kinderhook).

Lawmakers are also urging Hargan to consider a list of strategic objectives, including bolstering research and increasing cooperation between the CDC and state and local health departments.

“This guidance will basically help us work with health care providers to provide supported care,” said Susan Allott, director of preventive services at the Essex County Health Department.

The push joins legislation sponsored by U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who stumped across upstate this summer to urge federal health authorities to pull the trigger on establishing the federal advisory committee created under the legislation.

The state Department of Health estimates that the North Country had 295 cases of Lyme disease in 2015.

Cases are rising due a combination of factors, including longer, milder winters and the expansion of ticks beyond their historic geographic range.

Numbers in Clinton County reached as high as 54 cases in 2014, but then dropped off in 2015 down to 29.

Essex County has seen a comparable rise.

“Current statistics basically tell us our year-to-date rate is higher than it’s been in previous years,” Allott said.

Counties do not receive federal funding to combat tickborne illnesses, and their role is primarily outreach and general awareness.

But officials were pleased that state and federal authorities are paying attention.

“This is the greatest thing I’ve seen, heard or encountered in the past year,” said Clinton County Health Director John Kanoza, referring to the Faso/Stefanik letter.

SENATE REPORT

The push by Stefanik and Gillibrand comes on the heels of a new report by a state Senate task force on tick-borne diseases.

The report recommends the state create a specific protocol when it comes to notifying patients of their diagnoses.

Numerous victims testified at the hearings chaired by state Sens. Sue Serino and Kemp Hannon in August.

A constant theme running through all accounts, according to the report, was “frustration over the lengthy diagnosis process, disappointment in the efficacy of current testing procedures, misinformation and a lack of consensus in the medical community, as well as barriers to coverage from health insurance providers.”

Lyme disease is notoriously difficult to diagnose, said Chris Fisk, president of the Lyme Action Network.

“It’s an extremely complex medical condition, and it’s not well understood,” Fisk said. “This disease is quite unique in each individual and needs to be treated that way.”

Lyme disease, that are treated by community physicians and are not reported, or do not meet the case definition,” testified New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker at the hearings.

The lack of a proper diagnosis can limit the resources available for treatment.

“The numbers are very very misleading and extremely inaccurate,” Fisk said. “We’re concerned the number of cases are so spectacularly underreported, is why disease doesn’t get attention it should.”

But, Fisk said, the proposed state legislation looks promising.

“We worked very hard to get that bill through,” she said.

“We’re optimistic and appreciative.”

Little said it’s important to note authorities must craft a more effective public health approach for additional tickborne illnesses, including the Powassan virus, the emergence of which in New York has “brought the sense of urgency to a new level.”

In Essex County, Allott noted an uptick in anaplasmosis from just two cases in 2016 to nine cases so far this year.

The report also recommended boosting funding in the state budget, creating an action plan and taking a more aggressive approach to pursuing research funding.

The bill, Little said, would “arm patients with information they need to more effectively advocate for themselves and receive swift, effective treatment.”

“It is commonly accepted that Lyme disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics if detected early,” said Little in a statement. “However, as was discussed by many hearing witnesses, the test used to detect Lyme disease is simply not reliable.

“Too often patients are led to believe that they are in the clear after receiving a ‘negative’ serology test for Lyme disease, which ultimately delays critical treatment resulting in worsening — sometimes irreversible — symptoms.”

More robust metrics are also necessary to get a clearer picture of the scope of the disease.

New York reported 3,252 confirmed cases of Lyme disease to the CDC in 2015. But the federal agency estimates that the actual number of diagnosed cases is as many as 10 times higher.

Patients testified at the hearings that “rampant inaccuracies” plague the test currently used to detect tick-borne diseases, with some suffering with symptoms for years before an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

“Once you get Lyme disease, if not treated quickly and effectively, the effects can hang with you for the rest of your life,” Kanoza said. “It’s only going to get worse in New York State.” ■
