Port Henry residents vote to dissolve village government By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

PORT HENRY — Residents here have changed their minds after voting against dissolution in 2010, voting 190-171 to continue down the road which would lead to the end of the municipality. “I can’t say I am surprised,” trustee Matthew Brassard said. “There was a good effort put out by people on both sides and I told people I thought it would be 20 votes either way. It turned out to be 19. “The people have voted and I will do my best to make sure the village goes out in the best way it can,” Brassard added. The trustee also talked about the next steps the village will take in partnership with the Town of Moriah. “The first thing now is to pick an official date of dissolution and then to look at what the town wants,” said Brassard. “One of the biggest things for me is the employees - who they are going to want and where they are going to go.” The village now has 180 days to develop a dissolution plan, which will then be brought before the community in a public hearing. Residents of the village could then petition for a referendum on the plan, but need a much higher percentage of registered voters to sign. Throughout the day, the Port Henry Volunteer Fire Department was steady with a stream of voters seeking to cast their ballot on the issue. “I watched all of the meetings on YouTube and did my own math and calculations knowing all the numbers,” David Koran said. “It was a close decision for me.” Kim Gilbertson pointed more to the third party in making his decision. “What I have told a lot of people is I feel the only people who will make out on this will be the LaBerge Group,” Gilbertson said about the firm hired to do the preliminary dissolution study, which was at the forefront of three public meetings held before the election. “There was only one factor for me,” Robert Buglingame said. “That is I grew up in this village.” >> Story Continued | pg. 5

Schroon Lake students enter digital age Students in 7-12 study with Chrome Books By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

SCHROON — In the modern age of education, Schroon Lake Central Superintendent Stephen Gratto believes the best way to teach is through the technology youth are using. That includes incorporating Chrome Books in the class-

rooms of students in grades 7-12. “Kids today are digital natives,” Gratto said. “This is the way they do things now, and theses Chrome Books are allowing us to teach the way students like to learn. You have to approach education in this way or it will not be as effective.” Gratto said the students are more engaged in their learning as the faculty has been able to design course lessons and assignments through the use of digital media. >> Story Continued | pg. 18
