Nine seniors part of annual program
TICONDEROGA Ñ Chief Mark Johns of the Ticonderoga Police Department has announced the department is making the necessary steps to get a K9 unit on board. Johns said that there are countless reasons this addition will benefit the community, especially in the battle against drugs. A K9 unit is more feasible than one would think and the department has evaluated how to make this possible. Johns has carefully assessed his budget, moving things around to accommodate a K9 unit. The Chief is fairly certain he can do so with a proposed zero percent tax increase. “I have been down an officer so I am in a unique position this year,” said Johns. “All officers will pitch in more hours and do extra work in which the money will be placed in a capital reserve account for a K9 program in 2015.” Chief Johns approached the department with his proposal. Johns said that instead of hiring an extra officer on Jan. 1, the department will wait until July 1, opening up half of an officer’s annual salary. Johns plans on writing letters to elected state officials, including Betty Little and Dan Stec, to gain more support from the public. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Firefighters from the Moriah and Mineville/Witherbee Volunteer Fire Departments, along with Essex County Sheriff’s and Emergency Services departments, were on hand to present fifth grader Emery
Tausinger with an award for his actions during the fire in the elementary wing of the school which took place Sept. 26. “The helmet was my favorite,” Tausinger said of the items he was presented. Ò It was a lot heavier than I thought it would be.” Tausinger said on Sept. 26, he had asked permission to go to the bathroom. When he entered, he saw thick, black smoke. “When I looked to my left, I saw a garbage can on fire,” Tausinger said. “I was ‘jumpy,’ scared, but my first thought was to go and tell a teacher.” “We are really proud our students have learned

what to do,” Superintendent Bill Larrow said. “This boy made the right decisions and reported it immediately. We also thank our local fire departments for all of their help.” The awards were presented by Moriah fireman Bill Trybendis, safety officer for the department who has been the long time coordinator of the fire prevention program at the school. “If he had not reported the fire when he did, this could have been a disaster,” Trybendis said. “All of the kids had an unbelievable response.
