SCHROON LAKE | An armed robbery suspect crashed head-on with a pick-up on the Adirondack Northway on Sunday, killing himself and severely injuring the occupants of the other vehicle.

State police say Desmond J. Clark, 28, driving south near Exit 27 at Schroon Lake, deliberately steered his 2008 Pontiac G6 into the northbound lane when state police attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Troopers spotted Clark at 11:07 a.m. and initiated a pursuit that lasted for approximately five miles at 11:19 a.m.

Clark drifted over the median and went airborne before striking a 2011 GMC Sierra pickup carrying Curtis E. Smith, 52, and Linda M. Hutti, 57, both of Peru.

Both were later transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment of “non-life threatening injuries,” authorities said: she with back injuries, and he with back and leg injuries. » Crash Cont. on pg. 2

ELIZABETHTOWN | An Essex County resolution opposing legalization of recreational marijuana skidded to a halt Monday.

Discussion had moved to Ways and Means Committee for review from Public Safety on Sept. 10.

The initial resolution was submitted by Essex County Sheriff Richard Cutting, who raised concern about pot as a precursor to numerous public health and safety concerns.

Cutting said personnel with the Sheriffs’ Association oppose legalizing recreational marijuana use in New York and asked Essex County supervisors to take a stand against such a law.

“The negatives and damage caused will far outweigh the alleged windfall in tax revenue that is being purported as a main reason for this bill,” Cutting said.

As Cutting’s resolution approached a vote, Moriah Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava moved to table discussion.

“I don’t know how Moriah constituents feel about it,” he said.

Scozzafava pointed to ongoing “listening sessions” being held to inform state lawmakers throughout New York.

The information sessions seek public feedback on recreational use of marijuana and what any law to legalize it might look like.

No supervisors pushed back against Scozzafava’s point.

But the motion to table discussion here was approved by a lean margin, 10 yay to

7 nay votes.

Westport Supervisor Michael “Ike” Tyler was absent from the committee meeting.

A report issued this summer by state agencies, coordinated by the Department of Health, suggests benefits of legalized recreational marijuana use “outweigh the potential negative impacts.”

Bordering states Vermont and Massachusetts have legalized recreational marijuana use, as has Canada.

Tractor trailer operator arrested for DWAI-drugs » Crash Cont. from pg. 1 Clark was pronounced dead at the scene by Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw, who later ruled the death a suicide, listing the cause as “multiple blunt-force traumas.”

Authorities at a news conference in Ray Brook on Monday described the crash as a “f ireball,” according to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.

Clark was a suspect in a robbery of the Keeseville Sunoco at 11:30 p.m. last Saturday.

Authorities said a man with a long gun held up a clerk and left with an undisclosed amount of money.

The chase closed down the Northway for more than eight hours, diverting traffic into Schroon Lake in the middle of a marathon being run through the town.

State police were assisted by the Clinton County Sheriff ’s Office, Plattsburgh City Police Department and the Essex County Sheriff ’s Office.

Authorities said the crash and robbery remain under investigation. ■

PARADOX | Vickye Grey is not following doctor’s orders this fall. She just couldn’t. There are too many people she needs to thank.

For 12 years — this will be the 13th — she and her husband Dan have hosted the Paradox Haunted Trail on a dark, harrowing path on the wooded hill in back of their house. It’s become an immensely popular affair, which last year attracted more than 500 people. But this year will be the last.

Grey suffers from Crohn’s disease, which her doctor says is made worse by the stress of planning the trail, decorating and coordinating the sponsors and volunteers.

“He told me no, and I said this is something I have to do one more time to show our appreciation to everyone who

TICONDEROGA | Ticonderoga Police arrested a man last week for aggravated family offense in addition to other charges.

On Sept. 19, Joshua W. Mason was arrested for aggravated family offense, a class E felony; criminal contempt, a class A misdemeanor; resting arrest, a class A misdemeanor; unlawful possession of marijuana and littering.

Mason was processed and arraigned and remanded to Essex County Corrections Facility on a $10,000 cash/$20,000 bond. ■

A “no scare” hike will be held for children under 5, with the little ones getting a friendly wave instead of a blood-curdling shriek.

The Paradox Haunted Trail began as a Halloween party for families that couldn’t afford the holiday bashes held at regional theme parks. From that, ideas began to sprout, and soon the trail was born.

SCHROON | New York State Police arrested a Tupper Lake man last week for allegedly driving while ability impaired (DWAI) by drugs.

David A. Nadeau, 27, was arrested Sept. 20 after the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) initiated a traffic stop on State Route 74 in the town of Schroon on a 2007 Peterbilt tractor hauling a trailer for numerous traffic violations.

Nadeau was determined to be driving under the influence of drugs. Nadeau was subsequently arrested and charged with DWAI-drugs. He was further ticketed for unsafe tires, insufficient tail lamps, insufficient stop lamps and operating without an inspection certificate.

Nadeau was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Schroon Court. ■

It’s easy to see why.

Around every bend is a Jason or a Michael Myers. Pennywise reaches from the gutter, and Dracula pops from the coffin — the first of the many props built by Dan. One year a participant was just about given a heart attack when she walked into Grey’s brother-in-law who was lighting the tiki torches.

“I told her, he’s just the help, he’s not even one of the characters,” Grey said.

Grey fights back tears at the thought of ending the Haunted Trail, but it has become a victim of its own success. “We can’t do it anymore,” she sad. “It’s just become too much.”

But she cherishes the friends, the volunteers and the patrons, who have come from as far away as Egypt to get a good scare and share some good camaraderie. ■

County moves to implement sexual harassment policy New law applies to all employers in New York state

ELIZABETHTOWN | The #MeToo movement sweeping the nation has landed in Essex County, where all county employees must now undergo sexual harassment training.

The new state Department of Labor law requires the training be interactive and repeated annually.

Essex County Manager Dan Palmer said county administrators are considering using online resources as a component.

The new law takes effect Oct. 9.

Palmer said the county is well-positioned to adapt.

“The (state-provided) sexual harassment policy is not a lot different from what Essex County has in place,” Palmer said.

The state legislature approved the legislation earlier this spring with support from state Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury).

Every county, city, town, village, school district, or other public entity would be required to develop a sexual harassment prevention policy that applies to all employees and which includes investigation procedures and a standard complaint form, according to a news release from the Senate Majority.

“Each complaint would be confidential and the policy must include the prevention of intimidation, retaliation, or coercion to help protect the complainant. The measure also standardizes the process for state government.”

The state provided a model for policy guidance in August along with a sample com-

plaint form and related documents.

The new law applies across the board equally to all municipalities, such as towns, villages, schools, as well as to private employers.

All employees must complete the model training or a comparable training that meets the minimum standards

by Jan. 1, 2019.

How often must employees receive sexual harassment training?

Employees must be trained at least once per year. In subsequent years, this may be based on the calendar year, anniversary of each employee’s start date or any other date the employer chooses.

What about new employees or those who start after January 1?

All employees must complete sexual harassment training within 30 calendar days of starting their job.

What if an employee only works part-time?

Employers are required to ensure that all employees receive training.

By Jan. 1, 2019, employers must provide sexual harassment training to all employees located in New York State.

Palmer told county lawmakers at the Personnel Committee meeting on Monday that he is in the process of preparing similar sexual harassment policy and documents for all 18 towns in Essex County.

LAW IMPACTS COMPETITIVE BIDDING PROCESS

The new sexual harassment law also applies to any company, even those outside of New York state, that seek work on municipal projects through a competitive bidding process.

Which means Essex County bids, Palmer said, “will have to ask if private employer has sexual harassment policy in place and if they do annual training.”

Lewis Supervisor Jim Monty asked what happens if a company bidding for work from Essex County does not have sexual harassment policy in place.

“Then that’s a deal-breaker for them?”

Monty inquired.

It is, under the new law, Palmer said.

Chesterfield Supervisor Gerald Morrow reframed the same question.

“So we go out for bids...and the lowest bidder doesn’t have a sexual harassment (policy)... we can’t use them?” he asked.

Affi rmed again, Morrow said the new legal requirement is “ridiculous.”

The deadline for completion of sexual harassment training is Jan. 1, 2019. ■

Fort Ti receives museum grant Money will help inventory and catalog thousands of artifacts

TICONDEROGA | The Institute of Museum and Library services has awarded grants totaling more than $400,000 to three Adirondack museums under its Museums for America program.

The grants, announced last week by the office of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) are part of the federal Museums for America Program, which supports projects that strengthen the ability of an individual museum to serve its public.

Winning the awards were Fort Ticonderoga, Tupper Lake’s Wild Center and the Adirondack Experience in Blue Mountain Lake.

According to the Institute, Fort Ticonderoga will receive $249,400 to inventory, catalog and store 30,000 items from its object collections. The wall-to-wall inventory will be comprehensive and take 36 months to complete. The grant will be matched by the fort with $370,230.

According to the Institute synopsis, project activities will also include the cataloging of 200 boxes of archaeological artifacts excavated from the site from 2000-2007.

The museum will hire two full-time professional collections inventory specialists to assist staff with the completion of the project, which will result in an online collections database with greater access for the general public, researchers, students, and staff.

“Through this project, Fort Ticonderoga will gain greater intellectual and physical control over its collections and make them more readily available for research and for use in exhibitions and programming,” the Institute said in its announcement.

Fort Ticonderoga President and CEO Beth Hill said the fort is planning a more detailed explanation of the project in October.

As for the other two museums, the Adirondack Experience is receiving $156,573 to, according to the synopsis, introduce a new and comprehensive training program to strengthen staff interpretive skills and enhance visitor engagement.

Fort Ticonderoga has received a $249,400 grant to inventory, catalog and store 30,000 items from its object collections.

The project will build on the museum’s shift towards a more immersive approach to learning by including professional development and training in coaching for year-round program managers, and new onboarding and training for the museum’s seasonal staff of interpreters.

The Wild Center grant for $24,321 to implement a twoyear comprehensive professional development initiative to build staff member cultural competency for improved work with its neighboring community of Akwesasne, the largest

remaining Mohawk territory.

According to synopsis, up to 40 staff members and additional regional participants will attend the Native North American Traveling College Cultural Sensitivity Workshop at the museum, and all participants will complete practice sessions and related activities as a follow-up to the trainings.

Staff field trips will also be organized to visit Akwesasne and the Six Nations Museum to further build an understanding of the Mohawk people. ■

We’ve watched the two-sided tug of war over Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s accusation of sexual assault by

From what little is known, according to Dr. Ford, only three people knew what took place in that room: herself, Judge Kavanaugh and a friend, Mark Judge.

According to Judge Kavanaugh, the event never took place thirty-six years ago, and he is forced to defend a negative.

Those are the only facts we know going into this week’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Despite those few simple details, the political leaders of our country and mainstream media have the entire issue resolved depending on which side of the political spectrum you find yourself.

There appears to be so much bluster and trash talking going into the formal testimony that it would make one think it’s a sporting event comparable to the Super Bowl.

This entire affair speaks to how unhinged we’ve become as a country and how the two party system is driving the nation to paranoia.

Conjecture on what happened, nor anyone who takes sides, means absolutely nothing. For all the air, press time and water cooler talk this hearing has dominated over the past couple weeks until the hearing takes place, all that has been accomplished is the planting of false impressions.

The golden judicial rule in this country is, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. It’s the paramount guiding vision of our entire judicial system.

Yet, many are ready to impeach Judge Kavanaugh or declare Dr. Ford a liar before the facts have been presented.

People’s lives and mental well being are callously being cast aside in favor of swaying public opinion before anyone knows what took place and who was involved.

Put yourself in either Dr. Ford’s or Judge Kavanaugh’s position. Both parties were teens, and now, in a few days, will go before the world to share how those events affected your life or how you can’t possibly imagine being accused of such an uncharacteristic act.

With so much at risk, the vast majority have already determined your guilt or innocence. How would you feel?

As a nation that prides itself on judicial tolerance and fairness, we’ve demonstrated how far off the rails we’ve allowed ourselves to go to influence a win.

And make no mistake about it, this is simply about winning or losing and the depth of how low either side will go. ■

Stefanik’s financial planning policy hearings ‘naive’

To the Editor: Editor’s note: This letter is in response to the article titled, “Stefanik casts net for millennial-related policy ideas at hearing” which appeared in the Sept. 22 edition of The Sun. I found The Sun’s article on Elise Stefanik’s committee’s work to help millennials make better long-range financial decisions.

While I think that long-range financial planning is important, I found the committee’s premises naïve.

Most of the millennials I talk to here in the North Country are already experts at financial planning, but their financial planning is done very carefully on a week-toweek month-to-month basis.

Their savings are usually short-range, for a special vacation or a new car. They rarely think about Social Security. Their long-range goal is usually to have the ability to provide their children with a college education.

Working parents (moms, dads and single parents) stretch their dollars to find child care, not just day care but for after school, weekends, overlapping schedules. Their cars need tires and maintenance, just as yours do.

They have rent or mortgage payments to meet. Some rely on second jobs. They skim the supermarket flyers for coupons and the weekly specials.

They worry about what impacts them now.

Health care, for one.

As I said, long-range planning is important, but before most millennials can consider it, they have more important things to do.

Those are the hometown concerns that should drive a Congressperson’s agenda!

Failure to vote gives politicians free reign

To the Editor: Many of my friends and family members tell me that they are so discouraged by the current state of affairs in our country that they have stopped listening to the news and don’t intend to vote because they hate all politicians.

But think about this: If we stop paying attention to what’s happening, if we become apathetic, if we don’t vote, we give those politicians free reign to do as they please and to chip away at the liberties and freedom that are the very hallmark of our democracy.

We live in disturbing times, when many politicians are selling out to special interests, are afraid to face constituents and are unwilling to stand up to a president who is taking our country down a very dangerous path.

Unfortunately, Elise Stefanik is guilty of all of the above. 90 percent of her campaign contributions come from outside our district, which means that she is almost entirely beholden to special interests who have no stake in our district.

She rarely meets with constituents and then only in very controlled settings. And her

support for Trump and his dangerous policies is something that should concern all of us.

Campaign contributions might be able to buy votes in Congress, but in the end, it is our votes that will decide who represents us in Congress.

In 2016, nearly half of all eligible New York voters did not vote. In a democracy, the path to change is through the voice of the people.

Public should support priests in time of crisis

To the Editor: Recent allegations have surfaced regarding Catholic clergy and their conduct involving the sexual abuse of children. Many of these allegations are decades old and basically he said/she said allegations with no corroboration.

Lately these allegations have increased, causing many to wonder if all priests are child sexual abusers. While there is no question that some of these allegations are factual and some have been covered up by the church hierarchy, these should be thoroughly investigated and where warranted, aggressively prosecuted.

That being said, it makes one wonder if some of these allegations are from the #MeToo folks jumping on the bandwagon, knowing the Catholic church has deep pockets.

I have been a practicing Catholic my whole life, and as an alter boy and the product of a Catholic school education, I had many interactions with numerous priests.

Crown Point student awarded scholarship

CROWN POINT | The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, has awarded the Rensselaer medal and scholarship to promising high school juniors who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science.

Rensselaer is pleased to announce Emily Harmon is this year’s honoree. Harmon hails from Crown Point and she is enrolled at Crown Point Central High School.

Each participating high school is allowed to select one member of the junior class to be honored with the award. The merit scholarship, with a value of $25,000 per year, is guaranteed for four years for each medalist

The high cost of medications: how will our candidates solve this problem?

We all know that many prescription medications cost too much.

We may have experience with the price gouging with EpiPens or the huge cost of cancer treatments.

By David M. Even those of us who do not use Mastrianni, MD • COLUMNIST • medications pay the price. Since Medicare supplies almost one-third of prescription drugs in the nation (and the percentage is rising), uncontrolled medication costs are straining our system for all taxpayers.

Why do medications cost so much?

When the FDA approves new medications, the price is set by the manufacturer. The pharmaceutical companies can charge whatever they wish … and we pay.

What other business can charge whatever it desires, knowing it will get paid? Allowing drug companies to set the prices of medications worked to grow the pharmaceutical industry, but now threatens to collapse the healthcare system and penalizes all of us.

What can we do about medication costs?

The federal government can control costs by requiring Medicare to negotiate with drug companies in a

By and large, our priests are well educated, sincere, devoted men of faith. They minister to thousands of people with little financial compensation or recognition. These dedicated men are going through very difficult times due to a few bad apples in their ranks.

It’s time we provide our moral and verbal support to these good men.

A reasonable competitive bidding process for drugs and supplies (like any business would do) will not strangle the pharmaceutical industry. The rewards for making new medications will be fair and the system will be sustainable.

Currently, the VA (along with the Department of Defense, Public Health Service, and US Coast Guard) negotiates medication prices. These reduced prices are still attractive to pharmaceutical companies.

Why don’t we use Medicare to control medication costs?

Congress prevents Medicare from controlling its medication costs. Thus, while Medicare has controlled spending on hospitals and doctors, it has been unable to control spending on drugs because the law prohibits it from developing a competitive bidding process.

How bad is the problem?

Our prices are higher than anywhere else in the world.

It is a disgrace that American citizens turn to Canada to buy medications discovered, developed, tested and produced in the United States—medications usually developed at institutions funded by American taxpayers and by scientists educated at American taxpayer expense.

A Green candidate is also running and can be expected to win about 5 percent of the vote.

But this 5 percent could very well be the difference between taking the House away from Trump or giving him carte blanche to continue his regressive policies, policies which make enemies, while hurting our country and our planet.

Example: Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accords leaves us with only Syria who do not want to ameliorate the devastating effects of climate change. I hope Green voters do the right thing to help tie Trump’s hands.

The current U.S. president is doing everything he can to degrade the environment, make the rich richer and the poor poorer, build up the military (already the strongest and most expensive on the planet) and discriminate against any minority that disagrees with his white supremacist views.

His Supreme Court nominees are an unmitigated disaster with their far-right agendas, and we may have to live with their decisions for many years into the future.

There is only one way to curb the president’s dangerous policies, and that is to reclaim the Senate and the House of Representatives.

But I am saying that the level of corruption within the GOP was exponentially greater.

Over 80 percent of Rep. Stefanik’s campaign funding comes from out of district big money donors.

Why does this system particularly hurt regions like ours?

Since we all pay into the system, these medication costs send money from regions like ours to urban areas with large pharmaceutical companies. The high price of medicines means money which could be used to support hospitals and hire nurses goes to already highly profitable drug companies.

Who opposes these changes?

The pharmaceutical industry, which has been reported to spend more money lobbying than any other industry.

The industry, supported by our academic institutions and educational system at taxpayer expense, makes important drugs which save and extend our lives. But they need to price their products in a free market system.

What should we ask our candidates?

If you are elected or re-elected, how do you plan to address this issue?

I can no longer pretend the GOP was the party of my parents’ generation. Their actions since Trump’s inauguration have shaken my patriotic heart to the core. There have been serious implications of corruption and criminal behavior. Meeting privately with Putin for over two hours and then refusing to call him out on proven Russian meddling.

Rep. Stefanik didn’t hesitate to block the subpoena for the Helsinki translator.

Why? Trump dropped out of the UN Human Rights Commission and the Paris climate agreement. The ongoing North Korea fiasco.

The pay to play at Trump owned properties.

The criminal indictments and guilty pleas.

Not one investigation opened.

Rep. Stefanik is complicit in allowing Trump to trample all over our Constitution and tell lie after verifiable lie.

She has not been the checks and balances.

She failed us.

That’s why this veteran changed her party to Democrat. They align more with my moral and patriotic values.

Is merging districts truly a beneficial step?

Ask yourself — why isn’t this movement

It is not!

Merging is unpopular and rare. Partly because the data demonstrates (consultants themselves stating) a merge should never be entered as a cost saving venture.

The signs proclaiming a merge will “stabilize taxation” are misleading propaganda.

The challenges in our district are not unique.

These concerns are the same for all public education. The youth population has declined.

Investment in public education has not been a priority for state leaders, this applies to all public schools in New York state.

Merging our school district with Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School (ELCS) would be a huge mistake.

You may think merging is a solution to the current dilemma, but it is merely a temporary “bandage,” once worn-out the WCS community will have gained nothing, other than abandoned properties.

Believing you will be saving monetarily, and the alleged addition of electives, will come at a tremendous expense; our local community school, where faculty know each child throughout their educational journey.

These critical factors impact the well-being, growth and development of our youth and community; our future!

Research the community trends— arrest rates, substance abuse reports and school discipline referrals, school attendance records, and the like, the differences are many. The cultures differ.

Th is small school that has appealed to so many for its rich values and educational strengths will be no more.

Westport residents will forever have great regret with a merger.

Vote no!

Buy local this harvest season The colors of fall are coming soon, believe it or not. The orange of pumpkins, the yellows

By Rich Redman of squash, the greens of spinach and beans, • COLUMNIST • the purples of grapes, the reds of apples, along with the cream color of milk and cheeses. Yes, we are blessed with a bounty of local foods.

Even the leaves will color up soon!

Farmers are producing more foods locally than ever before. Farmers markets and farm stands are growing in every town. We also have the food co-op in Ticonderoga.

When you go to the store, did you ever think about where the products come from? Cheap goods are lining the shelves in most stores, most of it made from outside the United States. It’s one thing to get a cheap shirt or pants, but we really need to draw the line on how much food we purchase from other countries.

I personally don’t want my food to be imported from a country that doesn’t have the same environmental laws to protect us from the use of restricted or even banned pesticides, or poor laws that don’t protect water quality or the cleanliness of the foods.

Even in this country we have had outbreaks from contaminated spinach and other foods. It happens! Buying as much of your food locally is much better. Shipping spinach from California to New York is very costly and simply foolish. Fresh local foods are healthier than food that loses it nutritional value when stored long periods. We can produce much of our food here in New York.

New York has the climate and soils to produce much of our food, if we want.

Grass pasture supplies forage for grassfed beef, chickens and hogs if you prefer.

Our farm fields are cared for by the best farmers in the world. I know, because I have worked with them. Corn, soybeans, alfalfa, wheat, rye, hops and a multitude of other vegetables, grains and fruits abound in this state.

We have beef and dairy farms for meat and dairy products. We raise hogs for bacon and hams. We have chickens for eggs and fried chicken dinners with taters and gravy. Even the chicken manure which is composted is available locally to be recycled on farm fields for the next generation of foods to be grown.

We have vineyards for grapes to make jellies, jams and wines. We have orchards loaded with apples, peaches, plums, cherries and other fruits in New York. We have it all. We just need to market it and for our citizens to purchase it locally.

Did you know that most of the milk produced in Essex County, is shipped to the Agri-Mark plant? Agri-Mark milk is used in Cabot and McCadam cheese. So only buy those brands if you want to support our local Essex county dairy farmers!

If we don’t support our local dairy farms, we will lose them! Milk is big business, Walmart has its own plant, Dean Foods controls much of the milk market, but not Agri-Mark. Agri-Mark is local farmer owned.

industry that supports local farms, buy local foods at farm stands and markets and food co-ops as much as possible.

Milk sales are down. Why you ask?

Because, there are numerous possibilities available at the local market. From fruit and berry drinks, teas of all sorts, fake milk like almond milk, sports drinks of all kinds and every other drink including bottled water of every kind. If you want something from the farm, try chocolate milk or regular milk. Pure grape or orange juice at least comes from orchards and not from some chemical concoction lab like many other drinks available.

For a real vacation, take a road trip around the state and see what we have to offer. From western New York’s peaches, plums, pears, grapes and apples, to the southern tier’s grass-fed beef and dairies, to the Hudson Valley apples and northward to the Champlain Valley

grassy pastures, dairy farms, orchards, vineyards and high tunnel greenhouses, we have it all here. Make sure you take a pickup or a big old American made station wagon, with plenty of room, because you will want to load up on the bounties of New York State.

Coming from western New York, I know what we have to offer. I have run the roads of this state from the Hudson River Valley, to the Chautauqua County area where Concord grapes are grown.

When my wife and I travel, we carry a cooler for sausages, limburger cheese and meats, like liver sausage as well as filling the back seat and trunk with boxes of goodies, (peaches, pears, Concord grapes, etc.), every time we go to visit family.

As consumers, you have the power in your wallet. Support your local farmers before it’s too late. ■

Spike in health care costs causing headache

TICONDEROGA | A disturbing spike in health care costs has prompted Ticonderoga Central Schools to call on employees to be smart consumers when buying medicine or being treated for an illness.

At last week’s board meeting, Superintendent John McDonald Jr. said the spike occurred last year, catching consultants and school systems in northeastern New York by surprise.

Everyone was hoping the spike was anomaly and waited for it to return to the baseline, but it never did.

“What was a spike is now the trend,” McDonald said.

The increase in payouts was caused by in increase in catastrophic illnesses, such as cancer.

That translated into a 13 percent increase in health care costs for the schools, on top of a 10 percent increase earlier in the year, or nearly $1 million in added costs, according to previously published reports.

Come the first of the year, McDonald said schools will have to figure out how to work the new normal into their already tight budgets.

The plan itself can’t be changed because it is written into the employee contract.

An ad hoc committee has been formed to investigate the issue on behalf of the 17 schools that have joined together to form a consortium designed to lower health care premiums by increasing the size of the risk pool. McDonald said the consortium has also switched consulting firms, after feeling it was not well-served by the people whose job it was to sound the alarm over any impending change.

Meanwhile, the system is calling for all hands on deck to at least help soften what could be a hard financial reckoning this winter. McDonald said employees can help by asking for generic drugs over name brands, and when possible going to see a doctor instead of visiting the emergency room.

Unfortunately, McDonald said prior to the meeting, healthcare consumers are somewhat limited in their choices because of a lack of providers. This can make it hard to shop around.

This year the added health care costs was covered out of surplus-fund balances, but those reserves are gone. If some other remedy is not found, cuts are quite possible, which McDonald said is a bitter disappointment.

“You shouldn’t have to worry about cutting programs for kids because the state is not funding education the way it should,” he said. ■

It’s pumpkin thyme again

Colletti — who has been studying the art — hopes to one day produce herself.

And while the variety of products at It’s About Thyme is quite broad, the focal point is the sprawling pumpkin patch peppered with fat orange globes that are ripe for the picking.

Pickers get some help, since Colletti and staff cut the fruit off the vine so no one commits that great pumpkin faux pas of snapping off the stem at its base.

Colletti loves doing some picking herself, as in picking out unusual varieties of pumpkins and gourds, little “treasures” that customers come across while perusing the patch.

“Anything that’s odd, I get,” Colletti said. That includes the pumpkin known as Galeux d’Eysines, a salmon colored fruit that appears to be covered in growths (galeux being French for “mangy”) that strongly resemble peanut shells.

OLMSTEDVILLE | Seventeen years ago Diana and Steve Colletti were running a restaurant in Middletown, N.J., directly south of Manhattan, when terrorists flew two passenger jets into the Twin Towers.

The trauma was obviously unspeakable. As the nightmare unfolded, the wives of first responders sat at the tables waiting for word from their husbands, as the human toll became apparent.

“Half of the kids in school lost a parent,” Diane Collette said.

It was then that the Collettis decided life was to short to spend it battling the madding crowds. Having vacationed in Schroon Lake they were familiar with the Adirondacks, and when their realtor in 2009 found them more than 150 acres in what seemed like the middle of nowhere, they jumped at the chance.

After putting up a greenhouse for their own use, people began to stop and ask what they were selling.

So it seemed as if a business might be possible, and they’ve been adding on ever since.

Marathon runner, turned around in wilderness, seeking Good Samaritan

SCHROON LAKE | Corey Burdick was among the hundreds of runners who flocked to Schroon Lake last weekend for the Adirondack Marathon Distance Festival.

Burdick, of South Burlington, Vermont, made her halfmarathon debut at the race in 2006.

But she hadn’t participated in the event in 11 years, after opting to focus on longer distances.

After a decade-plus absence, Burdick wanted back in. She won entry at the Vermont City Marathon and trained extensively.

She left home at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday and gave herself plenty of time for the 8:15 a.m. packet pick-up deadline at Schroon Lake Central School.

But the directions she found on GPS were spotty, taking her through unfamiliar backroads terrain shrouded in fog.

By 7:30 a.m., she steered her vehicle down Old Furnace Road, which was closed to local traffic.

“I’m local traffic,” Burdick thought.

The unpaved road was windy. The landscape contained plenty of animals, and it was beautiful, but it was also remote — and the deadline for race entry loomed.

And Burdick was getting nervous.

“This is it. I have 25 minutes to be where I need to be. I don’t

know where I am. I have no cell service, but I have paper directions, which I printed out just in case,” Burdick told The Sun. A pair of cement blocks ultimately portended the end of Burdick’s quest.

As she pondered her options, a man materialized out of the fog, a fellow runner.

She flagged him down. He stopped. Both were in running gear, but he appeared to simply be out for his morning run.

Allies.

The man gave her directions, directing her to Route 74, where an Essex County Sheriff ’s deputy waved her through a barricade with words of encouragement.

Burdick found the last parking spot at Schroon Lake Central and made it to packet pick-up within two minutes of the deadline.

“I still can’t believe I made it,” Burdick said.

She ultimately did well in the race, beating her personal best by 7 minutes and 5 seconds with a time of 1 hour, 46 minutes and 10 seconds, ranking No. 5 of 25 in her age group — or 55 of 332 total half-marathoners.

Now she wants to find the mystery runner.

“I am completely grateful to this gentleman, who I didn’t think to grab a name from in the moment, but I assume he lives somewhere along that road,” Burdick said. “It is nothing short of a miracle that I arrived at the gym in time to grab my packet, walk to the bus and even make it to the start line.” ■

The Crown Point Relay for Life was held Saturday, stressing awareness, hope and support for those with cancer. Participants formed teams and walked on an oval track throughout the day to represent the nonstop vigilance required to beat the disease. Activities included venders, music and a barbecue. Organizer Mary Cunningham said the event raised $18,000 for cancer research and attracted 30 survivors and about 200 participants throughout the day.

Healthy High run set for Saturday at college Removing dependency stigma part of the goal

TICONDEROGA | Substance dependency is an issue many would rather not mention in polite company, which, prevention workers say, is among the reasons it is such a hard problem to fight.

With that in mind, North Country Community College will host the inaugural Healthy High 5k in Ticonderoga on Saturday, Sept. 29.

The goal is to have fun, and also raise awareness about substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery.

The community walk/run race is open to all ages, and encourages participants to develop healthy habits to sustain their recovery or the recovery of an addict in their lives.

Before and after the event, participants will be able to meet with agencies in the region involved with substance

abuse prevention, treatment, recovery and personal wellness.

“The college and our partner agencies planning this event see this as a priority issue affecting our local and regional community,” Kim Irland, North Country’s Dean of Student Life, said in a press release. “We recognize that addiction affects families and friends as well as the substance user, and we invite all members of the community to be part of this event to build healthy habits and celebrate recovery at whatever stage someone might be.”

Jarrod Sammis, a member of the Substance Abuse Prevention Team of Essex County, said more people will get the help they need if dependency is treated less like a stigma and more like the brain disease that it is.

“Dependency was originally addressed as a moral failing, (but) addiction actually rewires the brain,” Sammis said.

The message those with addiction issues need to hear — but often don’t, since no one likes to talk about it — is that there is hope for recovery. “The brain can actually repair itself through neural plasticity,” Sammis said.

Sammis said the community should not think of those with dependency problems as “addicts,” nor should the victims themselves. “Addict” implies some sort of failing

or wrongdoing, when very often people become dependent through no fault of their own. Changing the terminology will help with community acceptance, which in turn helps make recovery possible.

Check-in for the Healthy High 5k is at 9:30 a.m. at NCCC’s Ticonderoga campus at 11 Hawkeye Trail. The race starts at 10 a.m. The course winds through Bicentennial Park, along the LaChute River and through town before returning to the campus.

Race registration is $10 for individuals and $7 per person for teams. Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place in both the men’s and women’s races. In addition to the 5k, an untimed one-mile fun walk/run will also be held.

The Healthy High 5k is being organized by NCCC, the college’s Ticonderoga Campus Student Government Association, the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, The Prevention Team, the Town of Ticonderoga and LaChute Roadrunners Club.

“Through collective focus and collaboration on prevention, treatment and recovery we can raise awareness and strengthen support for all ages struggling with addiction in the North Country,” Irland said. ■

Green thumbs get inside look at nursery Decker Flats opens up greenhouse

MORIAH | The leaves are changing, temperatures are chilling and pretty soon the snow will be flying, so greenhouse owners are — planting seeds?

Yes, said Jim Cunningham, who along with his wife Ronnie owns Decker Flats nursery and floral shop on Dugway Road in Moriah.

Some of the popular bedding plants, begonias for example, take the better part of six months to grow from seed.

Cunningham offered a tour of his greenhouse as part of a Moriah Chamber of Commerce mixer last week, showing off

some of the advantages professionals have over backyard gardeners.

For example, if Cunningham is filling a tray with 200 tiny cabbage seeds, he doesn’t need to resort to a magnifying glass and tweezers.

Instead, he employs a piece of mechanical wizardry that through suction holds, as if magnetized, just the right number of seeds at just the right spacing, to a flat sheet which he then flips over, dropping the seeds into the plastic cells.

Ti’coustics hits the notes

Music club plays for others and for themselves.

TICONDEROGA | A little before 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month, cars begin to fill the parking lot of the Ticonderoga Elks Club on Tower Street.

Individually, or two to four at a time, they climb the stairs to the second-floor meeting hall, nothing in particularly standing out about them — except perhaps for a Stetson here, and a pair of finely tooled cowboy boots there.

And, of course, the guitars.

For the next two hours, a half-concert, half-support group known as Ti’coustics will unfold on a small stage in the hall, as local amateur artists perfect their craft and realize the dream of musicians and nonmusicians alike: to play and sing in front of an appreciative audience.

The public — both spectators and players — is welcome at these free (although donations are appreciated) concerts, although the majority of the crowd is made of up fellow musicians and their families.

Through the evening they enjoy drinks and the Elks Club’s fat cheeseburgers to the urgent strains of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” or the lonely ballads of Johnny Cash.

This happens to be old-country night — the second Wednesday of the month plays to a theme, such as folk, rock, Broadway or seasonal

The organization is the brainchild of Roberta Whiteley, who, along with Lance Dolbeck, Marianne Major and Lance Clark, founded the show in 2013.

From a handful of musicians who “were looking for something to do in the winter,” the group has expanded to include dozens of artists, whom Whiteley deftly juggles on a yellow legal pad with equal parts discipline and flexibility.

Artists on the stage come and go, mix and match and play for two hours, or maybe a bit longer if the kitchen help isn’t quite ready to go home.

Donations from the shows have in the past gone to selected nonprofits, and currently Ti’coustics is raising money to place wooden statues of 18th century Ticonderoga heroes in and around the town.

Whiteley said she never expected the group to have staying power. She was wrong about that, as Ti’coustics just passed the 126-show milepost.

And it has found a permanent home at the Elks Club, where members have become part of the audience.

While the show is mainly about entertainment, most participants remark on how much everyone has gotten better over the past few years due to regular play. Whiteley said she “could sing, and knew a few chords” when Ti’coustics began, but has improved with regular practice.

“A lot of us hadn’t practiced that much, but we’re all committed to learning how to play better.,” Dolbeck said. Dolbeck played a bit prior to joining the Navy, but “there’s not a lot of area to play guitar on a sub,” he said.

Major said she is a good example of how people who love music, but are unsure of their abilities, can grow.

“I only sang with groups,” said Major, who now has the confidence for duets or solos. “I was very nervous my first night, but these are all friends, and we do our best to put on a good show. It’s fun to see people grow, and there’s some real good talent here.” ■

Blaise had a huge night for the Vikings, running for 235 yards and scoring four of the first five Viking touchdowns on runs of three, 44, four and three yards.

TICONDEROGA | Michael DuShane was able to deliver through the air and on the ground late as the Ticonderoga Sentinels picked up their first win of the season, 28-7, over the Saranac Lake Red Storm Sept. 21.

As part of a 22-point first quarter, DuShane scored on an eight yard rush and a 47 yard reception from quarterback Terrance Benedict, then helped anchor the team on the ground for 85 yards rushing.

“The line gave me some good holes and we were able to gain some yards,” DuShane said. “It was nice to get out here and score early and come away with the win.”

Benedict also scored on a three yard play in the first quarter and provided an insurance score on a seven yard touchdown completion to Ty Schlogl. Schlogl also had a key interception for the Sentinels.

“That was a big win for us,” said coach Scott Nephew.

“We were able to get a big turnover in the first and we were able to keep the momentum rolling. We were able to control possession in the second half.”

For the Red Storm, Ryan Meyer sparked the lone score of the night with a 70-yard kickoff return followed by a 15 yards touchdown catch on the next play from quarterback Rhett Darrah.

Darrah finished with 66 passing yards on a night where the Red Storm was unable to get their running attack going against the Sentinel line, running the ball 17 times and losing 11 yards total. Darrah had nine yards to lead all rushers for Saranac Lake. ■

“We had a really good running game tonight,” Streible said. “I’m very proud of our line tonight. They really stepped up and gave us a really good chance to run and pass and made our game really strong.”

“We played great tonight,” said lineman Mike Rollins. “Our defense locked down and our offense was clicking all night. We started off good. We are getting better every week.”

“We have improved a lot since last week and all I can say is we are ready for our next game,” said lineman Myles Madill.

On defense, the Vikings held the Hornets at bay on the ground, allowing only 45 rushing yards.

“We did a very good job controlling the line of scrimmage and were able to run the ball extremely well,” said Tesar. “Our game plan was to try and score and keep the ball out of their hands and I thought we did very well with that today.” ■

Soccer teams set for second half

ELIZABETHTOWN | The Northern Soccer League has seen its share of close games as teams have tried to position themselves for a second half run this season.

In Division I boy’s soccer, it appears the season may again come down to the defending Class B champion Peru and Plattsburgh High, as the two teams played to a draw in the first meeting this season at PHS and will meet again Sept.

27 in Peru. Francis Kneussle and Noah Lederman help lead the Indians attack, with Andrew Follmer being the top point scorer for the Hornets.

“We have been able to improve on solidifying the defensive unit through practice and game experience,” said Peru coach Matt Armstrong. “Our goal is adding possessive components to our offensive attack in hopes to put more balls in the net for the second half of the season.”

In Division II, the Chazy Eagles are the top-ranked team in Class D and have continued to roll through divisional opponents with Tristan Conners and Riley Hansen leading a balanced Eagles attack while Ben Norcross leads the section in shutout victories.

For coach Rob McAuliffe, the key has been building a team defense throughout the first half of the season.

“We have been improving on our defense with four new guys in the back and we have improved each game as a group,” he said. “We will continue to improve on that, and we need to

focus on playing well for a complete 80 minutes.”

Zach Spaulding and Noah Peters lead a Crown Point team in Division III play, while Schroon Lake’s Andrew Pelkey has been the third leading scorer in the section behind Saranac’s Cameron Duffield and Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport’s Blake Liberi.

In Division I, the Beekmantown Lady Eagles and Saranac Lady Chiefs drew in their first meeting this season, defeating all other opponents as the head to a scheduled Sept. 26 meeting in Saranac.

“Our biggest improvement over the season has been our team chemistry,” said Chiefs coach Mary LoTemplio. “We need to work on playing our best from the moment the game starts to the moment it ends We have had some inconsistency with our level of play and intensity. We continue to work on all aspects of our game with an eye on improving each and every area.

Beekmantown’s Avery Durgan and Saranac’s Nora Canning are atop the division in scoring, while Bailey Carter and Payton Couture are at the top of the shutout standings for goalies.

The Moriah Lady Vikings have been running away in the Division II standings as the defending Class D champions seek a high seed in the Class C playoffs this season. Coach Christina Slattery said the team was still working to improve on their midfield play and are being led by Juliette Baker’s 13 goals while Madison Olcott has added eight goals and eight assists on the season.

The Chazy Lady Eagles currently hold the inside track for the top spot in the Class D playoffs, having defeated fellow Division II foe Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport and Division III leader Crown Point. Kendra Becker and Catherine Langlois help to lead the team in points.

The Panthers have been unbeaten in Division III play so far, led by double-digit goal scorers Shawna McIntosh and Swade Potter. Keene has also had a strong season in their Division, with scoring from Alyssa Summo and strong play in net from Sophia Johnson.

“We have been working together with six freshman added to the roster,” said Crown Point coach Jayna Anderson said.

“Getting the younger players to communicate has been a challenge but we are getting better daily. We have also struggled with getting shots on net this year. Continued work with communication and passing and getting some finesse on our shots will be the key to success in the second half of the season.” ■

SNOWPLOWING BID The Ticonderoga Fire District is accepting sealed bids for Snow Plowing of the Firehouse for January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. All bids shall be sent to: Ticonderoga Fire District, P.O. Box 127, Ticonderoga, NY 12883 and be clearly marked: SEALED BID: SNOW PLOWING BID. Bids shall be submitted by November 16, 2018 This bid shall include the snowplowing services for the front and rear of the building located at 60 Montcalm Street.

This Bid shall also include shoveling of all entrances and exits of the building including Apparatus Bay the Doors. Bids should also include salting of the parking lots as well as all building entrances and exits. All bidders shall submit a Lump Sum Bid for the entire 2019 year. Payments will be made on March 1, 2019 and December 1, 2019 in the amount of half of the total awarded bid amount. The bidder will be responsible for plowing beginning with the first 2 and every 2 thereafter. The successful bidder shall keep clear the firefighter parking area near the ramp to the Schuyler Street entrance. The rear of the station shall remain free of deposited snow and shall be maintained the same as the front of the building.
