SCHROON LAKE | St≠ewart’s Shops’ plan to expand their downtown Schroon location has been defeated.

The Schroon Town Board voted 3 to 1 (with one abstention) on Monday to approve a zoning ordinance to allow retail usage in the residential neighborhood.

But an attorney representing a group of neighboring homeowners opposed to the project filed a zoning protest petition that required a supermajority vote in order to approve the change.

Th e foundation and facade of the stately two-story structure is deteriorating and is plagued with safety risks and code violations, including an

electrical system that county engineers say poses an immediate fire hazard.

But the decision by the Essex County Board of Supervisors last week to enter formal negotiations to purchase the Jehovah’s Witness building in Lewis for potential office space has sparked a passionate discussion over the building’s future.

ECONOMIC CONCERNS

The building, home to 10 county

employees, anchors the Essex County Fairgrounds.

First built in 1924, the structure was deeded to Essex County in 1941 by a group called the Junior Achievement Club.

But its fortunes have faded, and delivery drivers now mistake it for being abandoned.

The plane, a Rockwell 1121 Jet Commander, may have gone down near Thompson’s Point at Charlotte, Vt., across from Essex and Whallon’s Bay, NY some believe.

Barbara Nikitas, whose uncle, George Nikita, was the pilot of the private jet, has been staying in the area to try to get the search going again.

Homeschool Day set at Fort Ti Fort Ticonderoga has numerous events and programs planned for homeschooled students

The Ticonderoga Kiwanis Club honored recipients of the 2017 Ticonderoga High School Kiwanis Scholarship at a luncheon on July 27. This year scholarships were awarded to Delaney Margaret Hughes, Abigail Young, Connor Mackay Lawrie and Collin Michael Bresett. Since 2015, the club has given $47,935 in scholarships to students in the Ticonderoga and Crown Point school districts.

TICONDEROGA | It’s Homeschool Day at Fort Ticonderoga for kids who learn at home.

The fort will host homeschool students and their parents on Friday, Sept. 8 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Homeschool families will see interactive and immersive programs, museum exhibitions, and explore the historic site, including the King’s Garden, Carillon Battlefield Hiking Trail, and the Heroic Corn Maze.

The cost is $6 per student, with one free parent per family.

Additional adults pay the group rate of $14.

Other special opportunities will also be available during the “To Act as One United Body” program and aboard the Carillon tour boat.

“Special this year, Homeschool Day will feature the story of 1757, as participants step into Fort Carillon, later named Ticonderoga, bustling with activity with French soldiers and cannon preparing to take the fight for New France all the way up Lake George to British-held territory,” fort Chief Executive Officer Beth Hill said.

“They can practice first hand in the artillery laboratory, learn the epic history of Fort Carillon during guided tours, and embark on a 90-minute narrated boat cruise aboard the Carillon for an in-depth waterway perspective at 10:30 a.m.”

For a unique and immersive experience, they can practice drills and formations of American soldiers at Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War and observe a musket demonstration during the “To Act as One United Body” program, which begins at 12:30 p.m., Hill said.

Programs for homeschool groups take place in the historic trades shops at 10:40 a.m., 12:40 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

A program at noon illustrates the process of feeding the troops as the mid-day meal is prepared.

Students in grades 6-12 can learn about how to be a part of the National History Day program at 1:30 p.m.

Other highlighted activities feature the layers of horticulture during programs in the King’s Garden.

“Watercolors in the Garden” is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

“Find your way through towering stalks of corn in the new 2017 Heroic Corn Maze design,” Hill said.

Ti woman swims Lake George Bridget Simpson finished in 28 hours as fans cheered

Simpson had planned to start on Monday, Aug. 7, but weather conditions made her wait a day.

Her son, Quinn, was using an app on his cellphone to relay her location to a website, so Simpson’s friends and fans could follow her live on the Internet.

TICONDEROGA | Marathon open-water swimmer Bridget Simpson dove off the Lake George village docks Wednesday night and didn’t touch ground again until early Thursday morning in Ticonderoga.

From 9:07 Tuesday night, Aug. 8, to 1:09 on Thursday morning, Aug. 10, the Ticonderoga resident swam the 32 mile length of Lake George.

Exhausted but smiling, Simpson climbed out of the water onto Diane’s Rock in Ticonderoga.

The landmark near Black Point Road and Sagamore Drive is named for Diane Struble, who in August 1958 was the first person to swim the full 32-mile distance of Lake George.

Simpson is only the 11th person to complete that feat. At age 49, she is also the oldest person to make the swim.

Although Struble started at the rock that now bears her name, Simpson’s swim began at the Lake George public docks at the south end of the lake, and with her Team 32 members following in two kayaks, she swam and swam.

Simpson said she was tired but elated when she climbed out of the water.

“It has been a bit of a whirlwind,” she told the Sun. “For some reason, the idea of going over my 24 hour estimate was in my head, but the idea that my swim would span three days – yes, I know, barely any of the 10th, but still.

“You’ve got to keep going,” Simpson said.

“It’s been a big kick.”

Judy Walker posted praise of Simpson after the swim.

“Unbelievable,” she said. “Great job, Bridget.

So proud of you and happy you accomplished what you set out to do. Great job by your team also.”

Nancy Carter lives near Diane’s Rock on the lake.

“Bridget just went by my house near the end of Lake George,” she posted. “It’s 12:30 (a.m.) and she is almost finished.”

Simpson, a resident of Ticonderoga, has been open water swimming since 1999. Some of her swims have included 1.5 miles in New York Harbor near the Statue of Liberty and eight miles in Lake Champlain from Willsboro to Burlington.

Ticonderoga Town Supervisor Joseph Giordano signed a proclamation making Aug. 10 Bridget Simpson Day in Ticonderoga.

“It’s been a great year and a great season for swimming,” she said. “I’m having a blast.”

Simpson said that although she didn’t intend for her swim to support a cause, she’s now asking supporters who want to make a charitable donation to do so to the Hannah’s Hope Fund, which raises money for research into a rare disease called Giant Axonal Neuropathy.

“I am swimming in honor of the kids and their families coping with GAN,” she said.

“Their work has motivated me to keep going and I am happy to return the favor.”

She said she felt a little queasy now and then a day after the swim, but was slowly getting back to normal.

“The swim was a little rugged towards the end,” she said. “A storm kicked up but it was the only time in the whole swim I felt warm.

Historic banquet table comes to Ti

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Historical Society has been given a table that once graced the banqueting hall of the original John Hancock mansion in Boston.

The table is now on display in the parlor of the Hancock House and may be seen daily from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. until Labor Day. As resources become available, the table will be interpreted to display the appropriate colonial table setting of Hancock’s home, which the Ticonderoga museum was built to replicate.

The table was the gift of Benn and Claire Eilers of Bend, Oregon. Mr. Eilers is a descendant of Hancock’s sister-inlaw, Sarah Quincy.

With leaves that extend to 30 feet, the table is constructed of birds-eye walnut, a relatively rare wood, said society President William Dolback.

The original Hancock House was constructed in 1737 by Thomas Hancock, an uncle of Declaration of Independence signer John Hancock. Hancock inherited the house upon his uncle’s death and in the 1860s the house was razed, despite protests from historians and preservationists.

Tent sale of clothing and items planned

“This is a remarkable gift,” said Dolback. “The table comes to us with a well-documented provenance and provides a direct link between our Hancock House and the historic mansion that once stood in Boston.”

It is believed that George Washington dined at the table while visiting the Hancock House in 1789, during Hancock’s time as governor of Massachusetts.

Philanthropist and Ticonderoga native son Horace Moses orchestrated the building of the Ticonderoga Hancock House in 1925, choosing to replicate the architecturally significant Boston home, Dolback said. ■ This is the historic table the Hancock House of Ticonderoga was recently given to display.

Feds need to take action on I’m back crumbling infrastructure While some of our readers may be pleased with my return, I’m certain others are thinking, “Oh no, not him again!”

I’ve got to admit, not having the column deadline hanging over my head each weekend has been a real blessing. But the calls to return have been getting louder as each week passes.

My absence was twofold.

First, we wanted to get some other views in the paper. I personally felt my voice was becoming too repetitious and we needed some fresh perspectives.

Infrastructure isn’t a glamorous topic.

Water and sewer projects don’t make national headlines unless there’s a crisis, like in Flint, Michigan, where people were exposed for years to lead-laced drinking water.

Facilitating these projects isn’t as simple as waving a magic wand.

Most would probably not prefer to think about what happens after they flush their toilet.

But our infrastructure is crumbling.

According to the 2017 Infrastructure Report Card released by the American Society for Civil Engineers, America’s infrastructure is rated a D+.

The fix is projected to cost at least $1 trillion.

Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read writes a great column and we are honored to have him sharing his views with our readers. His column was to appear every week in the Clinton County Sun zone and monthly in our other zones.

Just about every Adirondack town is in the process of tackling large-scale water and sewer projects.

Similar columns coming from other community leaders elsewhere failed to materialize despite Mayor Read setting the pace by providing insight into the inner workings of the City of Plattsburgh.

Shoring up infrastructure is not an abstract concept.

My column was to be used in reserve as needed with the hope that once we found a workable schedule, my column would appear monthly or bi-monthly. That is still a goal we’ll work on moving forward, but it leads me into the second part of my absence.

In the spring, we put the Sun in front of a national newspaper design consultant.

He spent a day meeting with our staff and discussing ways of improving our community newspaper from the reader’s perspective. While we hope to bring him back in the near future for a prolonged engagement, a number of his critiques were things we took to heart and began addressing immediately.

A lot has been going on behind the scenes here at the Sun as we began restructuring the news department. Our focus has been on accelerating the production process and transferring the responsibility of page design away from the editorial department and utilizing our graphic design team to enhance the final presentation of the paper.

By now, you’ve no doubt noticed we’re using a more readable typeface for both body copy and headlines. We’ve deployed a new content management system to provide greater control over the copy generated and updated the page design software.

You’ll be seeing more changes in the weeks ahead as the staff gets more comfortable with the software and the design procedures we’ve put into place. ■

Despite the exact cause, the abrupt closures of an popular beach illustrate how disruptive human waste can be on a tourismreliant economy.

Infrastructure is also critical for economic development.

The absence of a system is curbing economic development because businesses are unwilling to relocate to a town that lacks the proper infrastructure.

The struggling economy paired with a limited tax base has placed financial burdens on local governments attempting to meet infrastructure needs.

Enter the state, which has made funding clean water projects a leading priority.

The Clean Water Infrastructure Act has pledged up to $2.5 billion over the next five years for investments in drinking water infrastructure and water quality protections.

Paired with low interest loans, communities have a chance to bolster their infrastructure once and for all by applying for competitive funding.

Willsboro, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Elizabethtown have all been successful in receiving partial funding.

But others have not, including the Village of Lake George, whose $4.5 million grant application to help replace their aging wastewater plant — a $17.2 million undertaking — was denied.

A study by the Fund for Lake George documented the connection between the 1930sera treatment plant and seepage streams in underground fields near Million Dollar Beach.

While no bacteria was found in the monitoring study of West Brook, excessive discharges of nitrates and other pollutants were documented, according to the Fund.

A report by the Adirondack Council has revealed project cost estimates for wastewater treatment facility infrastructure investments in Adirondack communities exceeds $100 million — not including the $20 million in projects currently underway.

The environmental group is asking Albany continue to increase funding.

While noble, we don’t think that’s feasible considering the state is entering murky fiscal waters: Projected revenues continue be anemic and prolonged uncertainty in Washington, D.C. makes financial planning difficult.

This is where Congress needs to show some leadership.

President Trump’s proposed $1 billion infrastructure plan largely consists of offering tax credits and other unspecified incentives to private investors.

The proposal contains just $200 billion in new spending, and maintenance of existing infrastructure and public transit projects will largely be left out.

It’s indisputable that the current legislative session has not been a success, and Congress has accomplished virtually nothing this year. As we head into fall, the president is openly sparring with members of his own party, jeopardizing his domestic agenda.

Infrastructure remains an issue tied directly to the fortunes of the people and businesses of our region, and should be prioritized by Congress.

Tackling this commonsense bipartisan issue is a chance to put the past seven months of warring behind us and start fresh.

This can happen anywhere.

Two letters in last week’s Sun illustrate the fallacy of false equivalence — referencing a single shared trait to generalize the overall equivalence between two subjects. One letter referred to “partisan pottymouths,” but I’ll begin with the other, touting a local forum to defend the Trump administration.

Being a head of state is the only relevant shared trait between Mr. Trump and his peers. Where is the factual evidence to back the writer’s assertion that “President Trump’s style of leadership is a refreshing, hopeful change” to balance against Trump’s vast and growing record of dishonesty and incompetence?

It would be refreshing to have a logical, more respectful political debate. However, asserting that investigations “will prove fruitless” demands factual evidence. Trump’s innumerable outright lies and near-daily incidents of gross incompetence cannot be blamed on

Essex County Arts & Crafts Festival to make debut Event designed to give local crafters a broad platform to exhibit wares

WESTPORT | Folks seeking to scratch their creative itch won’t have far to go next week.

The Essex County Arts & Crafts Festival is set for liftoff on Aug. 30 and 31 at the Essex County Fairgrounds.

The first-ever event is designed to give local artists a commercial platform and boost use of the county-owned facility, Essex County Arts Council President Margaret Gibbs told county lawmakers last week.

Essex County is unique for its crafting culture.

“Every single one of our communities has arts and cultural groups,” Gibbs said.

A partial catalyst for the event, said Charles Russell, an organizer, was an editorial written by the Sun Community News Editorial Board in 2015 encouraging the community to do more with the under-utilized facility in Westport.

While the concentration of artists has mainly come from the eastern and southern portions of the county, organizations are hoping to shore up participation from other areas, including Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

“We’re already seeing a wide group of artists and people are continuing to register for the event,” Gibbs said.

Participants run the gamut from traditional oil painters to folks who traffic in “Bohemian spirit designs,” Adirondack rustic furniture, jewelry, nature photography and guitar-making.

And, said Russell: “We have the archetypal grandma knitter who started knitting for grandchildren and turned this into a staple of her support.”

“It’s an exciting opportunity,” said Susan Runyon, a Wilmington-based nature photographer. “It seems like a good collection of artists.”

A CAP Grant to ECAC has provided partial start-up funding.

“It’s not a lot of money,” Gibbs told lawmakers, “but can be the seed funds that allows an event to take off.”

Runyon exhibits her work across the North Country, from Plattsburgh to Saratoga Springs, and said more exposure and sales never hurts.

Boosting the arts also acts as an economic development strategy, says ECAC, and creative clusters help trigger job growth, civic engagement and local spending in local communities.

The event also aims to give artisans who surf the seasonal farmers market circuit a larger commercial platform.

Organizers would like to see the event become recurring, like the harvest market, an agriculture-themed event featuring local farmers and musicians that made its debut last September.

A 2007 USDA study revealed 21.5 percent of Essex County’s civilian workforce belongs to the creative class (compared to 14 percent in comparable areas nationwide).

New area code takes effect this Saturday Existing phone numbers, call rates to remain the same

ALBANY | Starting Aug. 19, North Country residents will need to dial 10 numbers to make a call.

To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the New York Public Service Commission ordered an area code overlay for the area served by 518.

The new 838 area code will be “overlaid,” or superimposed, over the same geographical area as the 518 area code — which covers the eastern upstate portion of New York, serving communities such as Albany, Plattsburgh, Lake Placid and Saratoga.

All calls made within and between area codes 518 and 838 must be placed using the 10-digit telephone number.

If customers forget and dial just seven digits, then the call will not be completed and the customers will hear an announcement instructing them to hang up and redial using the area code.

The overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code or phone number. The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.

You can still dial just three digits to reach 911. If 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 or 811 are currently available in your community you will still dial these codes with just three digits.

Beginning Sept. 19, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers using the new 838 area code.

In addition to changing your dialing procedures, all services — automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to dial a seven-digit number — will need to be reprogrammed to use the new dialing procedure.

Downtown Port Henry could see fixup A state technical assistance grant is in the works for the business district

PORT HENRY | Businesses in Port Henry are signing up for a state technical assistance grant that could improve facades, signs and other features.

PRIDE of Ticonderoga Executive Director Sharon Reynolds told members of the Moriah Chamber of Commerce at a recent meeting that they were more likely to get a technical assistance grant for their places than a state Main Street Program grant, which they’d previously been working on.

She said a downtown grant would need an assessment of businesses seeking funds

“That’s what we’re going to do,” she said. “The last (Port Henry downtown) grant was very successful.”

The technical assistance grant would cover about $10,000 to $20,000 in improvements to businesses. Reynolds said the grants are usually announced in May, and they’d have to apply by fall.

St. Mary’s School gets ready The elementary school will be back in operation soon

TICONDEROGA | St. Mary’s School of Ticonderoga plans to welcome staff and students back for the first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Chicken nuggets will be served for lunch that day, and fresh fruit, cereal and toast will be served for breakfast, said the school’s Maureen Jebb.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students and parents will have orientation on Wednesday, Aug. 30 between

6 p.m. and 7 p.m. First through eighth grade students and their parents who would like to come in to meet and greet their new teacher and bring in their school supplies may also do so at that time, Jebb said.

Teachers will participate in a professional development program on Aug. 29, 30 and 31.

Soccer for 6th through 8th grade students will begin with conditioning on

Monday, Aug. 28 and Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 4-5 p.m. on the St. Mary’s playground, run by coaches Eric Leerkes and Joseph Giordano.

Those who cannot attend but would like to play on the team this year may sign up on the first day of school.

More information will be released later for younger students interested in playing soccer. ■

Bentley Douglas Sayward TICONDEROGA | A baby boy, Bentley Douglas Sayward, was born at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, Vermont on Aug. 1, 2017 to parents Ella Louise Seeley (Burke) and Shane Sayward of Ticonderoga.

Moriah Town Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava said the town has some leftover grant money from the now-dissolved Village of Port Henry that could be used for the assessment.

“They feel we need to come in and look at the area and see what needs to be done,” Scozzafava said at a recent Moriah Town Council session.

He recommended they use $9,902 left in a waterfront development grant from the state Department of State for the business assessment.

Moriah Chamber President Cathy Sprague said 12 businesses previously wanted to participate in a Main Street grant.

“They weren’t all together (geographically), and they need to be, for a Main Street grant,” she said. “They get a technical grant and it’s easier for us.”

That technical grant might have only a 5 percent match, she said, for grant funds, instead of the usual 25 percent that business must chip in.

The Town Council voted 4-0 to use the remaining grant for the assessment.

Scozzafava said the town already has a $100,000 state Department of Transportation grant to replace sidewalks and install ornate street lamps from Celotti’s Liquor Store to Mac’s Market downtown.

Proposals for the sidewalk work are due in September. ■

County lawmakers asked to help snuff out smoking Effort to raise age of tobacco sales part of national ‘Tobacco 21’ campaign

ELIZABETHTOWN | The movement to snuff out adolescent smoking has reached Essex County.

The Essex County Board of Supervisors’ Human Services Committee was asked on Monday to draft a resolution raising the county’s tobacco sale age from 18 to 21.

Doing so will help reduce smoking amongst the county’s estimated 1,700 youngsters by widening the age gap between teenagers and adults who may purchase tobacco products for them, said Public Health Director Linda Beers.

“Fourteen, 15 and 16 year olds very seldom have social relationships with 21 year olds,” Beers said.

According to a report by the Adirondack Health Institute (AHI), the ages of 18 to 21 are a critical period when many smokers move from experimental smoking to regular, daily use, 95 percent of whom begin before the age of 21.

“Nicotine really plays havoc on a teen brain,” said Tom Tallon, a population health improvement program manager with AHI. The push is part of Tobacco 21, a national campaign to reduce premature deaths caused by smoking.

HIGHER THAN AVERAGE

With 16.6 percent of the county’s adult population identifying themselves as smokers, Essex County ranks slightly higher than the statewide average of 15.6 percent (At 27 percent, Franklin County ranks highest in the North Country; Clinton, 22.6 percent).

Statistics aren’t available to gauge the number of underage smokers in Essex County. But with a rate of 21.2 percent of smokers between the ages of 18 and 24, the North Country number dwarfs the statewide average of 13 percent.

Bringing these numbers down will be key to saving lives, Beers said.

Minerva Supervisor Stephen McNally worried about the impact on retail outlets in his community, namely because Warren County is just a short drive away.

Essex County Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Shaun Gillilland said he “philosophically disagreed” with the measure.

“I don’t believe in the nanny state,” Gillilland said. “If we allow (18 year olds) to go overseas and get their bodies blown apart, I think they can make the decision to smoke or not.”

While legislation has made it out of both chambers’ respective health committees, the bills remain stalled.

Gillilland also disputed the narrative that the U.S. military was turning down recruits due to smoking-related ailments.

Beers encouraged lawmakers to schedule similar presentations in their towns.

Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable disease and premature death in the U.S., killing a half-million Americans every year, including 28,000 New Yorkers.

“It’s not going to become state law until more counties pass it,” Beers said.

“The reason kids are not being able to come into the military is not smoking — it’s our obesity epidemic,” he said.

“I know there’s a lot of support on this, but we need full support before we can adopt a resolution on Tobacco 21,” Beers said. “To make it a state law, we need more counties to contribute.”

“I’m against smoking, too,” Politi said. “I gotta stand next to (Moriah Supervisor Tom) Scozzafava all the time and see him smoke outside.”

Westport Supervisor Michael “Ike” Tyler voted against entering sale negotiations, citing the availability of county-owned land and the need to keep employees in Westport.

“I talk to my constituents all the time,” said Tyler. “They want to keep the building.”

A relocation, he said, would have a detrimental impact on the local economy.

“When you lose 5-10-15 jobs out of Westport, that’s like 100 jobs in Lake Placid,” Tyler said.

The building also serves as a community meeting space for farmers, youth groups and other programming.

Robin Severance, a local resident, said she’s seen the town’s economy decline over the years, citing the loss of the state police barracks and the relocation of Champlain Valley Milling to Willsboro.

“The town of Westport cannot afford to lose one more job,” said Severance. “Every one of those jobs impacts the few stores that are here.”

Attendees of events and workshops spend money locally, Severance said, whether it’s buying gas or ordering lunch from area businesses.

Others say the building needs to continue to be tied to the Essex County Fairgrounds, the site of the annual fair in late-August and additional ag-related endeavors.

“It feels like it’s in the right place,” said Westport Chamber of Commerce President Dee Carroll. “We just don’t see the wisdom that it isn’t connected or anywhere near the agricultural activities.”

Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava, who opposes the potential sale, agrees. But he also doesn’t want to spend taxpayer money to house contract agencies like CCE, which receives partial funding from Essex County.

“I don’t think the county should be making space for contractual agencies when we have county departments mandated for what we have with space issues,” Scozzafava said.

The Jehovah’s Witness building, located on Route 9, has been appraised at $170,000 and is currently for sale.

At present, a county fairgrounds task force is exploring housing CCE in Lewis, and cohousing Soil and Water with the Department of Public Works.

REPORT FORTHCOMING

Despite the heated public discussion, no decisions have yet been made on the structure’s fate, and the Essex County Board of Supervisors has not taken a stance on the issue.

The Fairgrounds Task Force Subcommittee will deliver a formal report to the board of supervisors on Aug. 28.

That report, said Committee Chairman Shaun Gillilland, will present a list of options, which range from full restoration to simply doing nothing.

“I think we will present the board a pretty good brush of all options of what to do, and the different levels of cost that each option is going to take,” Gillilland said. “The number one concern of everyone in the county is to address the tenant concerns of everyone in that building.”

While no action has been taken, county officials indicated they would keep an eye on grant funding opportunities, and said they would apply for a $500,000 New York State Historic Preservation Office grant, the maximum permitted under state guidelines.

Dick Sherman, who owns Bessboro Builders & Supplies, said he’s heard the preliminary restoration numbers being batted around the community — a $2.2 million estimate for full restoration was offered in May — and believes they’re too high.

“When government gets involved, the prices skyrocket,” Sherman said. “I think there must be some practical ways of fixing

it up and bringing it up to code.”

The Westport Chamber of Commerce has passed a resolution in support of restoring the building.

Severance aims to meet with every town supervisor and will begin circulating petitions to protest the relocation of jobs and potential purchase of the Lewis site.

“On the 28th, I hope to pack that building,” Severance said.

‘ULTERIOR MOTIVES’

CCE Executive Director Rick LeVitre told lawmakers last month the building would be sufficient for use as an office space.

But Board of Directors President Jay White wants to see the building restored and said a move to Lewis would diminish their programming.

Short of full restoration, White feels as if the county isn’t exploring all of their options — including seeking temporary office space in Westport.

While White was quick to say he appreciates the county’s support, he also believes the county has ulterior motives in purchasing the structure in Lewis.

“There is some other reason they want that building,” White said. “And it appears CCE is the reasoning for the purchase of it.

By identifying the old building in Lewis — I don’t care what they say the options are — they’re bound and determined to purchase the building and move us there.”

White floated the idea of a full takeover

by CCE. “If Extension took over the building, maybe Extension would have a better opportunity to find grant funds,” White said. “I would like to study and see what all options are if we privately owned it. I’m just looking for every option studied at this point.”

The CCE board has not formally discussed purchasing the structure, White said, but they did pass a resolution last month to study what resources would be available if the building was privately owned, as well as a measure authorizing the study of alternative restoration funding.

“I just don’t want to be the board president who allowed our CCE legacy to vanish from Westport,” White said.

Gillilland said the task force is continuing to evaluate all options, and disputed White’s claims.

“There are no ulterior motives,” he said.

“To say there’s some ulterior subterfuge on this building is ludicrous.”

Office space for county workers is a constant issue, Gillilland said.

“Mr. White was always welcome in his position to come to our meetings,” Gillilland said. “They were announced on the calendar.

We had other representatives from CCE and his board at these meetings. He chose at no time to participate in the process.”

DROPPED THE BALL

Scozzafava agrees that it may be a good idea to simply turn the building over.

“I proposed years ago that we turn that building over to them,” he said.

The county has let the structure deteriorate, he admitted.

The broader issue, Scozzafava said, is part of a recurring pattern of lawmakers only taking action to avert an immediate crisis, citing the Essex County Fish Hatchery and Floral Hall at the Essex County Fairgrounds.

Saranac Laker wins big in lotto John Lewis purchased $5 million winning ticket on lastminute shopping trip

SARANAC LAKE | He went on a quick errand, grumbling, to find mushrooms at Tops.

John Lewis was making pasta sauce that day in June and had no idea he was about to become a millionaire.

Lewis admits he was in a hurry as he left the home he shares with girlfriend Mary Williams in Saranac Lake.

They had just returned from camping and were making a sauce, a family recipe Lewis said his dad used to make.

It typically simmers for two days.

“I asked her if we had mushrooms, and she said yes, but they weren’t there,” Lewis shrugged.

He said he really didn’t want an added errand that morning, but he quickly ran to Tops Market on Church St., and picked up the item. He has just enough time to chop and add fresh mushrooms to the sauce before heading off to work.

“The express lane was closed,” John said of the trip to Tops.

And that fortuitous closure pushed him to a center aisle

where, as you leave, there is a scratch-off lottery ticket kiosk.

On a whim he bought a $10 Set for Life and left to chop mushrooms.

With just a few minutes to spare before heading to work on June 27, he scratched the ticket.

He saw the gold coin and a winning amount of $5,000,000.

“I just kept staring at it,” Lewis said. “It wasn’t real.”

Lewis said he came to his senses and called Mary, who asked if he was kidding.

And then he called his mom, Pat Lewis, also of Saranac Lake, who loves scratch tickets.

“She said I’ll pray for you,” Lewis grinned.

Asked what prayer she said, Pat Lewis laughed, “Oh, just — I hope you’re reading it right.”

And he was. Lewis went to have a local store check the ticket. The cashier screamed and jumped up and down: it was verified, a genuine winner.

The $5,000,000 Set for Life ticket nets Lewis an annual cash payment of $172,068 per year for the rest of his life.

Standing between the potato chips and cans of nuts at Tops on Tuesday, Lewis, 56, accepted a very big payout from New York Lottery’s Yolanda Vega.

“I’m Yollllannnda Vega,” the state’s Lottery star trilled over aisles stacked with groceries, gathering a small crowd.

Vega asked Lewis what he has in mind to do with his winnings.

“I want to help out my mother,” the Saranac Laker said.

Lewis said he did call his employer at Lake Placid Pub & Brewery that very morning and told them good news and bad and left the position as bartender.

The couple might travel to some warm island for a while, he said.

But Lewis doesn’t think winning the lottery will really change their lives too much.

“I think it’s going to help us,” he said of plans to help a family member with medical bills.

“We’re very low-keyed.”

Lewis returned to Saranac Lake eight years ago to be with family here. He spent some part of his childhood nearby as his dad was in the U.S. Air Force and stationed for a time at the Plattsburgh Air Base.

Calling for another round of applause for Lewis, Vega thanked Tops for their hospitality.

Lewis said he is indeed “Set for Life.”

The winner got to keep the giant, oversized check and headed out to go do everyday Adirondack things.

New York Lottery contributed $3,042,945 in Lottery Aid to Education to school districts in Essex County in 201617, according to a news release provided at the winning presentation.

“The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.27 billion in fiscal year 2016-17 to help support education in New York State,” the release said.

The contribution is about 14 percent of the total state education aid to schools. ■

NORTH HUDSON | Furniture and historic items from four lodges, camps and homes is headed for sale at a North Hudson auction service.

The more than 800 lot sale starts at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19 and is expected to continue through 4 p.m. at Gokey’s Auction Service on Route 9 near Blue Ridge Road.

“We are having an auction which will include items from a historic camp and boat house on Lake George, a Keene Valley mountaintop lodge, and a Catskill Mountain home, along with the Wilke estate from Peru,” co-owner Jean Gokey said. “This will be the

Quiet 3.4 mile round-trip walk near Pharaoh Mountain offers alternative to bustling High Peaks

SCHROON LAKE | As the High Peaks grapples with overuse from a sustained influx of visitors, it may behoove adventurers to explore trails off the beaten path.

The Schroon Lake Region Chamber of Commerce says the hike is perfect for an afternoon jaunt.

“From here, another slight climb leads to Spectacle Pond, where the trail continues along the south shore for better views. The mountainous terrain around the pond gives it a really interesting feel, with stellar vistas to boot.”

Distance round-trip is 3.4 miles, which most hikers can complete in less than 3 hours, the chamber suggests.

“A slight climb from the trailhead goes past Beaver Meadow Hill before descending to cross Shanty Brook, a pleasant backcountry stream,” the Schroon Chamber’s hiking guide says.

GETTING THERE

To reach the Spectacle Pond trailhead from Exit 28 on

One popular local hike for fishing with two camping sites near the water traverses Spectacle Pond Trail.

On the western edge of the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness, the trailhead is off Adirondack Road on the eastern forest flanks of Schroon Lake.

The trail travels into the forest area about 1.7 miles to Spectacle Pond, a quiet waterway with a view of Pharaoh Mountain.

Central New York Hiking calls the trail a “wonderful walk in the woods” that ends at scenic pond.

“The well-used trail is easy to follow as the wide trail is an old woods road,” CNY Hiking says. “The trail follows Spectacle Brook for most of the distance, even crossing the brook a few times.”

It is flagged with Department of Environmental Conservation trail markers and rises a gentle 295 feet across the 1.7 mile trail.

DEC counts Spectacle Pond among the top brook trout fishing spots in Essex County, though possession and/or use of bait fish is prohibited in the waters.

“Gas, food and other supplies may be found in the nearby communities of Schroon Lake and Ticonderoga. Dining and lodging opportunities can be found in the nearby communities of Hague, Schroon Lake, Pottersville and Ticonderoga,” DEC says.

SCHROON LAKE | Schroon Lake is a comparatively small lake, but has a very large watershed.

Schachner said it’s not “inconceivable” that a party may question or challenge the document.

“But our view is that the filing looks to meet the requirements of the protest petition,” he said.

Steve Kinley, a Stewart’s real estate representative, said he was “disappointed” by the decision, and that company counsel will review the document.

“If the petition is correct, it’s done,” Kinley said of the project.

Stewart’s will continue to operate their current location, Kinley said, and will not seek alternative sites in the community.

Wally Thomas, one of the homeowners, said the number of signatures met the required threshold.

“We had well over 20 percent,” Thomas said.

BIG PLANS

Stewart’s announced in April plans to demolish and rebuild the Main Street location, which was originally constructed in 1980.

The redesign called for an expansion from 2,500 to 3,675-square-feet, additional gas pumps and more parking spaces.

Completion of the project was contingent on the purchase and demolition of a home directly behind the current site.

As the Saratoga-based chain awaited approval of the zoning amendment by the town board, residents simmered in a monthslong debate over the future of the community.

In a series of public meetings throughout the summer, many spoke in favor of the project, citing the need to resurrect an economy in dire need of a jump start.

Emily Rossi-Snook spoke of growing up in a tightly-knit community where people looked out for each other.

Sage smirked at Ceresnak for the remainder of the hearing.

Nearly two dozen residents spoke at a public hearing ahead of Monday night’s vote.

But that culture appears to have soured.

“He told me to shut up. He told me I had no right to make any comments because I was not a full-time resident of the town,” Press said.

PUBLIC SPEAKS

Several speakers at the standing room-only hearing said they were in favor of the project.

Bob Smith praised the chain as a good corporate steward and noted the role of the location as a community hub.

“Things happen in there that don’t happen anywhere else,” Smith said.

Others said the process was rushed and ill-conceived, citing what they perceived to be a lack of clarity on the economic benefits, job creation and the lack of a formal traffic study.

“I just don’t understand why a larger Stewart’s will be a better Stewart’s at the sacrifice of a zoning change,” said Kathy Mick.

Several speakers fought back emotion as they detailed the fault lines that opened in the community, particularly between natives and second homeowners.

“The culture in Schroon Lake is one of kindness and support,” she said.

“I really deplore the comments that are being made that are divisive and divide the locals from the non-locals,” Rossi-Snook said.

TENSIONS SPIKE

At times, tensions boiled over, and a pair of Essex County Sheriff’s deputies kept watch from the back of the room.

When Kinley was briefing attendees on cosmetic changes made to appease the opposing homeowners, Paul Ceresnak, a homeowner, raised his hand and asked to address those claims.

Supervisor Mike Marnell denied his request, citing the rules governing public hearings (Ceresnak had already spoken), and Town Councilman Don Sage twice told Ceresnak to “shut up.”

The room audibly gasped.

“How dare you speak that way,” remarked an audience member.

Alan Press, a New Jersey transplant, later addressed the audience to say that another attendee had physically threatened him.

The comments trickled to a halt before Craig Mason stood up.

“I’m really disappointed in the attitudes here,” Mason said. “There isn’t anything going on here that is worth this.”

Ceresnak appeared subdued afterwards.

“It’s a hollow victory because all that came out it,” he said.

Racing family pulls together Two first place wins in the All Truck Nationals for Moriah’s Team Venom

MORIAH | The Cheney family’s Team Venom Racing had big wins in Pennsylvania for the Carlisle All Truck Nationals.

Team leader Walter Cheney said two of

their entries took first place in the show.

Team Venom won first place at Carlisle, Penna. in both 4x4 Import Full Size Street Class, with a 2010 Nissan Titan pickup, and in 4x4 Import Full Size Custom Class, with a 2016 Nissan Titan truck.

On top of trying to keep the trucks, Venom and Black Widow, in show trim we race them in the dirt and daily drive them. So to be able to attend a national show and win with a daily driver is no small feat.”

“We (had) community support for this adventure down in Pennsylvania,” he said.

“The Carlisle All Truck Nationals is a big deal. This is a top level truck show and we were fortunate to have won it last year.”

Cheney, who’s been in the truck pulling competition since he was a child, said his mother, Pauline, died in 2014 after telling him to keep pulling.

“The competition was fierce this year though,” Cheney said. “People knew we were attending

Paragliding comes to Bulwagga Bay Town of Moriah authorizes high flying business

“We’d like to tow from early in the morning to evening,” Letorney said. “It depends on weather.”

Paragliding is the recreational adventure sport of flying paragliders: lightweight, free-flying, glider aircraft with no rigid structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing made up of a large number of interconnected baffled cells.

He stressed that this is paragliding, which is different from parasailing, and is not a high speed operation.

MORIAH | The Point at Bulwagga Bay could soon be a paragliding destination.

Calef Letorney of Paraglide New England wants to start a paragliding business from the Town of Moriah’s Bulwagga Bay Campground.

The group has been testing the high flying craft at the Point for the last few weeks.

Moriah Town Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava said Letorney approached him about permission to operate the service.

“He’s very interested in that site,” Scozzafava said at a recent Town Council meeting. “I’m excited about it. It makes this area a destination. Is this something you (Letorney) want to do this season?”

Letorney replied that it was.

He said once he gets permission he’ll file a certificate of insurance. Operations will be during daylight hours.

“We’d like to bring the sport of paragliding to that area,” Letorney said. “The boat has a winch on the back, which connects to the pilot on the shore. The paraglider is on the shore and is pulled aloft. They can go up to 5,000 feet and land on the beach.

“Bulwagga Bay is ideal.”

He said he filed the paperwork with the town to request authorization. The local operation would have two employees at first, a boat driver and a glide technician, and might add another boat if demand warrants. Cost would be about $130 a ride.

Scozzafava said he doesn’t know what the town would charge for a lease, and they can discuss that at a future meeting.

“This is something I think will be a huge benefit to this community,” Scozzafava said.

The plane could be anywhere between Burlington and the south end of the lake to Moriah.

“We are so perplexed about what happened that night and we just can’t get a handle on where this plane could be,” Nikitas said.

She said she’s been in contact with a woman who lives near the Essex ferry landing.

“Some funny pieces of things washed up on her beach,” Nikitas said. “We don’t know what they are.

They’re in the custody of the New York State Police.”

Nikitas, of Beverly Hills, Calif., said her side of the family spells their last name differently than George Nikita did.

Nikitas said the search ended in 1973-74 and started again in 2014.

“Nobody wanted to search anymore,” she said.

“We got into contact with Mr. Van Laer and the search started again.”

Scott Van Laer is a state forest ranger who in his offtime tracks plane crashes in the Adirondack region.

After Van Laer met Nikitas on a wreck-chasing Internet message board, he organized a search in Lake Champlain in 2014 with state police divers and private contractors who used a mini submarine.

The twin engine jet was bound for Providence, R.I., with Nikita, a co-pilot and three businessmen from Atlanta real-estate firm Cousins Properties on board. The jet vanished from radar only a few minutes after takeoff, with near-blizzard conditions reported on that day, Jan. 27.

Forty-six years later, the families of those on board would like some closure, Nikitas said. ■

Little honored by funeral directors Lawmaker authored bill to allow food in funeral homes

ALBANY | The New York State Funeral Directors Association (NYSFDA) was pleased to present a “Friend of Funeral Service Award” to state Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury) recently for her state Senate sponsorship and tireless advocacy to successfully secure a law allowing funeral homes to serve light food and refreshments in New York State.

The law removing the prohibition on food and beverage in the funeral home took effect statewide on Jan. 17.

The NYSFDA Award was established in 1998 to provide special recognition to the individual or organization demonstrating outstanding support for funeral consumers and funeral service in New York State.

“It is not awarded every year - only when special recognition for support of funeral service is called for,” says NYSFDA Deputy Executive Director, Randy L. McCullough, CAE. “Because of her work, an important measure of comfort will be provided to families and loved ones of the deceased as well as to those individuals waiting to pay their respects,” says NYSFDA Government Affairs Committee Chairman and funeral director, William E. McVeigh.

Other notable past winners of NYSFDA’s prestigious award have included: NYS Senator Owen Johnson; NYS Senator Hugh Farley, NYS Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and NYS Assemblyman Richard Gottfried.

According to Muller, ESSLA had invited people from the Paradox Lake and Schroon Lake Associations and the YMCA to attend the Floating Classroom.

Kelly graduated from Schroon Lake Central School, class of 1986. He immediately went to work at the family business, DeZalia’s Garage in Severance. He worked along with his dad and brothers, Brent and Brian.

Anyone visiting the shop knew he meant business — work hard until your day is done. The thought was: who needs a “lift” when we’ve got our muscle, Kelly.

After 25 years of fixing the cars of the North Country, he longed for new challenges.

Kelly ran for public office twice, both times for the seat as North Hudson Highway Superintendent, losing each race by only a couple of votes. That didn’t detour him from taking a position as an HEO for the Town of North Hudson Highway Department in January of 2011. It meant learning all new skills. He did that in little time and he did it well.

In September of 2011, Kelly was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. The prognosis was grim but he took the challenge and ran with it full force. He underwent many surgeries, hundreds of chemotherapy sessions, radiation and immunotherapy. When Dr. G and Dr. K gave him the next option, there was no question — he was doing it, no

Kelly was always someone you could call if you needed something fixed, lifted or moved. He took many motorists from North Hudson to Schroon Lake to get gas, after telling him they were almost empty. He was someone you could count on no matter what you needed help with.

He loved spending time with family and friends, whether it be camping, kayaking, hiking, vacationing or just hanging by a campfire, all of which included throwing back a couple of beers. He loved fast and “clean” cars. Every day was a car cleaning day. He enjoyed the days past when he was called Coach Kelly for the SL/NH Red Sox undefeated little league team.

DOLGEVILLE | Mrs. Marian D. Porter, 93, of 735 Brockett Road in Dolgeville, died July 22, 2017 at Little Falls Hospital of natural causes. At the time of her passing she was comforted by her daughter Barbara.

Kelly was most in his glory watching his son Jordan and daughter Miranda play in their various sporting events. He was their biggest fan. He was always so proud of all of their many accomplishments and he made sure that they knew it. His children were everything to him.

Kelly is survived by his loving wife of almost 27 years, Stephanie (Bowers) DeZalia; his daughter Miranda DeZalia (future son-in-law Cole Gaddor); his son Jordan DeZalia (friend Kali Lafountain); his mother Rita (Milligan) DeZalia, his brothers Donald W. Jr., Jeffrey (Caroline), Bradley (Dorothy), Brian (Laurie) and Brent(Lisa) DeZalia; his mother and father-in-law Edna and Stephen Bowers; his sister and brother-in-law Tina and William Plumstead, his sister-inlaw Bridgette Bowers, his aunts, uncles and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

She was born in Dolgeville on Jan. 27, 1924, the daughter of the late Clyde O. and Margaret E. (Woolever) Davis. She was a graduate and class valedictorian of 1941 of Dolgeville Central School. She continued her education by graduating from the New York College for Teachers in Albany (Albany Business School).

Her marriage to Charles D. Porter took place on Aug. 31, 1947 in the Universalist Church in Dolgeville. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this August.

A funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 15 at noon at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake; interment followed at the Schroon River Catholic Cemetery.

Her affiliations included the Dolgeville Teachers Association, the Herkimer County Retired Teachers Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as the Regent. She also taught business at Herkimer County Community College on a part time basis. Her personal interest was in traveling with her husband, ceramics, gardening, cards, especially pinochle and bridge. Marian also did tax preparations for family and friends throughout the years. A special highlight her life was when she and her husband were designated Queen and King of the 2015 Violet Festival for the village of Dolgeville.

She is survived by her husband Charles, her daughters, Barbara Porter, Linda and her husband Nelson (Jody) Post Jr. of Salida, CO; her grandchildren, Michael and his wife Karina Post of Salida, CO and Meredith and her husband Dave Kintner of California; her great grandchildren, Porter, Orion and Gloria Post all of Salida, CO and Clara Kintner and Sydney Davis Kintner.

She was predeceased by a brother Kenneth Davis.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29 at the Roberts Funeral Home, 3 Faville Avenue, Dolgeville.

Burial followed in the Rural Park Cemetery Inghams Mills.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Little Falls Hospital 3rd Floor, Little Falls, NY 13365.

Ticonderoga, and Robert Cossey and his wife, Susan of Clifton Park; her daughter, Beth Ross and her husband, Doug of Ticonderoga; eight grandchildren, Danny Cossey, Matt Cossey, Sara Dorsett, Courtney Cossey, Nate Yaw, Adam Yaw, Samantha Cossey and Eva Cossey; and six great-grandchildren.

TICONDEROGA | Vivian H. Cossey, 89, of Ticonderoga, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, after a long battle with dementia.

DELMAR |Phillip R. Wood Jr. , 80, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 at the Hudson Park Nursing Center in Albany.

She is also survived by her sister, Ruth Elmore of Hudson Falls, and several nieces and nephews.

Vivian was born in Ticonderoga on June 13, 1928, to Harold and Kate (Harrington) Hozley of North Hudson, but was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lewis and Myrtle Wathsock.

Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Phillip R. and Phyllis (Gore) Wood, Sr.

Vivian was loved by all who knew her. She never spoke an unkind word.

She was known for generosity and her great sense of humor.

Vivian graduated from Ticonderoga High School in 1946, and then went to work for the New York Telephone Company, and retired after 35 years of service.

Phillip worked as a truck driver for the Town of Bethlehem for 22 years, retiring in 1992.

After retiring he worked at his son’s restaurant, Emerld’s, in Ticonderoga for 14 years.

A memorial service took place on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. Scott Tyler, Pastor, officiated.

She married Robert Cossey in October of 1947. They would have been married 70 years in October.

He is survived by his loving wife Yvonne (Bragg) Wood, who would have celebrated their 50 year anniversary in one week; his children, Diane (Dean) Pemberton of Selkirk, Brian (Dawn) Wood of Glenmont, Mark (Erin) Wood of Ticonderoga, Christopher (Jackie) Wood of Clifton Park and Autumn (Jimmy Loor) Wood of Estero, Florida; his grandchildren, David, Andrew, Alex and Peyton Wood, Dylan Hinz, Nikki and Tina Connley, Taylor Loor and twins arriving in December; his sister Kay (Donald) Wright, of New Salem and brother Wayne (Maryanne) Wood of Binghamton. Phillip is also survived by nieces Donna Wright Greenwood, Laura Smith and Cindi Madej and his nephews Daniel and Devin Wood. He was predeceased by his niece Kathy Ortiz.

Interment will take place at a later date at the family plot of the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Ticonderoga.

Vivian was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga, and was a former Sunday School Teacher, and also delivered Meals on Wheels.

Donations in Vivian’s memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 1045 Wicker Street, Ticonderoga, New York 12883.

She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brother, LeRoy Hozley.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga.
