TICONDEROGA | The Town of Ticonderoga has named Adam Hurlburt Chief of Police, bringing stability to a position that has known little of it over the past few years. Hurlburt, as a sergeant, had been in charge of the department since last fall following the departure of Chief Mike Mawn, a retired state trooper, who resigned because the state would not allow him to collect his full pension while in the employment of the town. » Chief Cont. on pg. 2

In Wilmington, which bills itself as the bicycling capital of the Adirondacks, riders can even take a break from road biking and go mountain biking. Westport will offer views and activities focused on Lake Champlain, including an optional loop into Vermont. Ticonderoga Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Matthew Courtright said riders will get a taste of the Adirondack communities they visit and then hopefully return. “They will have an impact while they’re here, and they’ll get glimpses into the communities and hopefully come back,” he said. The chamber will set up a portable information center in Bicentennial Park where the cyclists will be staying, and Courtright said organizers want it to be a community event, not exclusive to cyclists.

Founder of Pyramid Life Center killed in car crash in Schroon Albany Diocese, Catholic Central High School and community mourn loss of Sr. Monica Murphy By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

SCHROON | A tragic car accident on Tuesday claimed the life of Sister Monica Murphy, CSJ. Sister Monica was 77. She had served as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 58 years and taught for decades at Catholic Central High School in Troy where she celebrated her 50th Jubilee in 2011, according to the Troy Record. She founded the Pyramid Life Center, a spiritual retreat on 750 acres in Paradox. State Police investigation reports that a two-vehicle collision happened Aug.5 at about 5:09 p.m. on State Route 74 in the Town of Schroon. Police said the 2015 Toyota Corolla driven by Murphy was traveling east on State Route 74, when, for an unknown reason, her vehicle veered into the opposite lane, striking a 2017 Ford F-250. The truck was traveling west on State Route 74, operated by John Homer III, 49, with passenger, Dalton J. Homer, 22, both of North Creek. “The two vehicles collided head on. Murphy suffered multiple traumatic injuries which resulted in her death,” police said. Essex County Coroner Jay Heald responded and pronounced Sr. Monica deceased at 8:02 p.m. Police said her body was removed to the

University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh for autopsy. John and Dalton Homer were transported by Schroon Lake ambulance to the University of Vermont Health Network, Elizabethtown Community Hospital where they were treated for neck and back pain and released. Ridge Harris, chairman of the Board of Trustees at Catholic Central High School, told the Troy Record that Murphy died in the car accident while returning to Pyramid Life Center in Paradox, where she had served as director for decades. Harris told the Record, “She was a pillar of our institution and made a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of young people. Throughout her time at Catholic Central, she was a teacher, guidance counselor, spiritual counselor, mentor, friend, and the Crusaders #1 fan.” Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger of Albany released a formal statement on the loss. “All of us in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany are so saddened to learn of Sister Monica’s passing. She was a beloved figure in our Diocese, bringing her passion for her Catholic faith — and for all people — to everything she did, whether in our Catholic schools, where she served for more than four decades, or at Pyramid Life Center, where she was the driving force that has kept that camp thriving since its beginnings. “Our prayers are with the communities of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, Catholic Central High School and Pyramid Life Center during this difficult time. We know Sister Monica has gone before us marked with the sign of faith to meet the One to whom she gave her entire life, but that does not make it any easier for those of us left behind. We will miss her, but we will

carry on the work she loved in her absence and in her memory.” The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Albany sought prayers for Sister Monica’s family, friends and the thousands of lives she touched. “Please pray for Sister Monica’s sister, Sister Maureen; her nieces and nephews and their families; her many friends, especially Sister Lynn Levo and Sister Jackie Power with whom Sister Monica lived; for the Catholic High community and the Pyramid Lake family. “Please pray for us too as we mourn Sister Monica’s tragic loss and prepare to send another of our precious Sisters home to God. We are heartbroken right now, but we know that Sister Monica would, most of all, like us to celebrate her life and especially now her life with the Resurrected Jesus.” Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet said details of Sister Monica’s funeral services would be available as soon as arrangements were completed.

“Together let us thank God for the gift of Sister Monica, all she was and is to us and the special gift she had of bringing the charisma of the Sisters of St. Joseph to all she met with warmth, vitality, energy, generosity and grace.” ■

Since the program was created in 2017, CycleADK has generated more than $12,000 in funding for community generated projects. Art for auction Decorated wood products on the block Aug. 15 By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership will host the 2019 Street Art Project Auction entitled “Adirondack Gardens,” to be held Thursday, Aug. 15 at Olive’s Ti Pi in Downtown Ticonderoga. It’s the ninth Street Art Project organized by TMSP. The preview of the art up for auction will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with the actual auction to begin shortly thereafter. The event will include complimentary appetizers, live music and a cash bar. Dinner specials for the event will be offered by Olive’s Ti Pi. The product sponsor for this year’s project is Tierney Adirondack Rustic Design. The wood products consist of garden planters and wooden benches. This year local wood products sponsored by 16 local businesses and organizations and have

been decorated by local artists and community members. Each of the uniquely designed items will be on display at local businesses and organizations until the auction where they will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership invites businesses, organizations, community members and visitors to join the fun on Aug. 15. Proceeds will benefit the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership and will be used for a Downtown Ticonderoga project in 2020. “We hope to see a good turnout for the auction of these unique products,” said John Bartlett, TMSP Promotions Committee Chairperson. “The goal of the street art project is to decorate Montcalm Street and businesses sidewalks, stores, and entrances with handA piece of decorated wood art up for auction at this year’s Ticonderoga Montcalm Street crafted, hand-painted art work done by local Photo provided artists as a way to create additional visual in- Partnership Street Art Project. terest as well as a fundraiser for a project that Ticonderoga Heritage Museum, The Country eroga Montcalm Street Partnership Street will continue to enhance Montcalm Street.” Florist & Gifts, Burleigh’s Luncheonette, Bain’s Art Project, contact the Ticonderoga Area Sponsors and supporters of the event include Sunoco, Community Bank, Upstate Agency, Chamber of Commerce at 518-585-6619 or the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, Ticonderoga Arts, and Kiwanis Club of Ti- stop by their office at 94 Montcalm Street in Ticonderoga Area Farmers Market, Optics of conderoga as well as a variety of local artists Ticonderoga. at 7 p.m. at the Hancock House, 6 Moses Circle, Ticonderoga. The program’s presenters are Donna LaGoy and Laura Seldman, who co-authored “The Underground Railroad in the Adirondack Town of Chester.” The Town of Chester in Warren County was a secret haven for runaway slaves escaping to Canada. The small Adirondack town holds as many as nine confirmed or suspected sites where fugitives once found shelter. “We include the stories of the courageous people involved in the movement in the town as well as confirmed and suspected Underground Railroad sites,” said LaGoy. “Owners of those sites were interviewed about the history of their property. We will talk about visits from noted abolitionists, local churches involved, and how we uncovered this history.” Hancock House historian Diane O’Connor said the work of documenting the Underground Railroad is difficult, because by definition these waypoints were in the business of staying out of sight.

“The locations weren’t supposed to be known,” O’Connor said. “And a lot of what we know is anecdotal and involves teasing apart fact from fiction; that’s a real historian’s job.” O’Connor said Lagoy and Seldman “Have worked very hard to verify the locations of the sites. The talk is going to be very interesting.” Lagoy is a former teacher who became the Town of Chester Historian when she retired in 2006. She has been on the Board of Trustees of the Historical Society of the Town of Chester since 1990 and editor of their quarterly newsletter since 2007. Seldman is a long-time summer visitor to the Chestertown area and a professional photographer who has always been interested in the history of the area. She was appointed Photo Historian of the local Historical Society in 2014. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are not necessary to attend the free program, but seats may be reserved by calling 518-585-7868 or via email to tihistory@bridgepoint1com. ■

A Woman’s Place Athol collective rode second wave of feminism By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

KEENE VALLEY | Forty-five years ago, seven women who had just met at a women’s retreat in Paradox decided to buy a fading old lodge in a rural community north of Lake George, and convert it into a sanctuary for women who felt they lacked standing in a male dominated society. Established in the heart of the equal rights movement, A Woman’s Place existed in Athol for eight sometimes-tumultuous years, closing for good in 1982. But in that time, more than 1,000 women passed through its doors, finding companionship and understanding that were lacking in their daily lives. Speaking at a gathering at the Keene Valley Library, author Lorraine Duvall, who is writing a book on A Woman’s Place, said she attended the retreat in 1974, and recalled being impressed with its founder, Marie Deyoe. But she did not return, and the years passed until she struck up a conversation with a woman from Paradox following their yoga class in Keene.

The woman turned out to be the founder of the retreat that had inspired Deyoe and six other newfound friends to establish A Woman’s Place. That bit of serendipity sent Duvall on a quest to search for the seven women who embarked on such a leap of faith so many years ago. “I wanted to find Marie,” Duvall said. “I remembered her, and I felt like I knew her.” When a houseful of women descended on Athol, the men in town were initially excited, thinking it might be a cathouse, Duvall said. They were disappointed. Most of the women who stayed there through the years were lesbians, a circumstance that some in the community found hard to swallow. Communes were not rare in the ’70s, fueled not just by feminism, but a back-to-the-land movement. A Woman’s Place was both, offering courses not just on women’s issues, but on Adirondack sports, gardening and star gazing. Determined to shed themselves of male shackles, they learned how to mend their own pipes and chop their own firewood. Many important personalities of the feminist movement lived, attended or taught at A Woman’s Place, including poet Martha Courtot, Olympian Jeanne Ashworth, and Joan Casamo, who sang at the memorial service for the great feminist author and activist Kate Millett. Duvall tracked down a number of them, and

Lorraine Duvall speaks to a gathering at the Keene Valley Library about a feminist collective known as A Woman’s Place. Photo by Tim Rowland has brought A Woman’s Place back to life with a private Facebook page and a planned reunion in September. She said her book will be the story of the women who passed through AWP’s doors. Times at the collective were not always happy, and in some ways echoed the tumult of the era. Three years after it opened, hard partying, borderline anarchy and shabby treatment of guests, particularly non-lesbians, came to a head and the more radical members were removed, some by the sheriff. Decisions, which had been made by consensus, now fell under the direction of Buckwheat Turner, one of the original founding members.

Ti dedicates water plant By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

TICONDEROGA | The Town of Ticonderoga will officially dedicate its new, $14 million water plant on Wednesday, which finally brings it into compliance with state and federal regulations and orders issued over the past 10 years.

Under the new system, which has been in use for about two months, Ticonderoga is drawing its drinking water from a well on Street Road, and no longer relying on Gooseneck Pond. Gooseneck had multiple problems, from a failing dam to poor filtration systems. According to federal documents, state notification of violations date back as far as 1991, but really began to pile up about 10 years ago. Previous boards largely ignored the orders, and the inaction drew a $50,000 fine. The current board decided inaction was no longer an option. Board member Joyce Cooper said the

town will celebrate the new system with a gathering of dignitaries at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and tours from noon to 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend. “We were able to live up to the timetable set by the Department of Health,” she said. “This is a pretty impressive and attractive building, and it’s an opportunity for people to see it.” Cooper said the new water is a bit harder than people are used to, but tests show it is also cleaner. The hardness will be monitored, and may go away on its own. Overall, “it’s better water than we had before,” she said. ■

New system brings it into state and federal compliance

Still, hundreds of women drew inspiration from A Woman’s Place, Duvall said. They supported each other at a time when support was needed, shared their stories, worked, played and frolicked nude in a nearby waterfall. Some have been reluctant to talk about the experience, but others seem happy for the chance, Duvall said. Financial problems caused A Woman’s Place to close in 1982. Eight years might seem short in the grand scheme, but for a collective it was a good run. “When people say that A Woman’s Place failed, I say no,” Duvall said. “It added so much.” ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

The epidemic continues

It’s Sunday night as I sit here at the keyboard trying to comprehend the two tragic incidents that took place By Dan Alexander in El Paso, Texas, and • PUBLISHER • Dayton, Ohio, only a few hours ago. At this point, we have a combined 29 senselessly murdered and another 53 seriously injured. While some jump to conclusions, pull out the same old solutions and begin the blame game, if we’ve learned anything from these horrific events in the past, it’s to wait for the investigation to take place so we know what happened and why. We must wait for the facts before jumping to conclusions. Clearly evil continues to find angry young men who somehow rationalize the killing of innocent people in public locations as a solution to what afflicts them. Over the next few days and weeks, experts in many fields will begin to dissect what took place and how we can prevent further events. Politicians will use these events to raise money and demand legislative action. Lobbyists will counter the arguments. Families, after burying their loved ones, and the communities will continue to anguish over why this happened to them. In time, we will all return to our normal lives until the next shots ring where we least expect them and another angry person with hatred in their heart and eyes seeks destruction and death among the innocent. I fear that until we begin to change our current social culture, we may never put an end to these types of events. Look at us, we fight over every detail to the bitter end, and we believe it’s my way or the highway. There is no social filter on the things people say and do in public, post to social media nor the names they call others or the lack of respect for all levels of authority. Until we can address our social behavior and until we replace gridlock on major issues confronting the nation with bipartisan cooperation we will suffer at the hands of the angry and disturbed, who seek to live out their anger at shopping and entertainment venues. We find blame everywhere but where it should start, at home, in schools, churches, entertainment selections, choices of language and how we treat others. Until we begin making and demanding changes around each of us, individuals will act as they feel compelled, and we’ll continue looking in all the wrong places for the solution.

Families have many safe biking options in the North Country Summer is in full swing here in the North Country, and families are taking advantage of the warm weather and long days By Rep. Billy Jones by spending more time • GUEST COLUMNIST • outdoors. Bike riding can be a great way to stay fit and healthy as well as explore our region’s extraordinary scenery. Whether you’re riding for enjoyment or to reach a health goal or simply want to try something new, you should always wear a helmet and other protective gear and follow all traffic safety rules to help prevent accidents and ensure cyclists and drivers can share the road responsibly. Cycling has many health benefits. It’s a low-impact activity, so it’s easy on the joints and provides an aerobic workout, builds muscle, promotes lung and heart health and can boost brain power and strengthen your immune system. Bike riding can also be a great way to shed calories. On average, a person who weighs 180 pounds and rides at a moderate speed will burn approximately 650 cal-

traffic, and wear bright-colored clothing to ensure they can be seen by motorists and pedestrians alike. And for those who ride at night, state law requires cyclists have a front light and a red rear light.

There are a wealth of opportunities for families to safely enjoy bike riding in the North Country, from the bicycle paths on the Terry Gordon Trail in Plattsburgh and the mountain bike trails at Saranac Lake’s Dewey Mountain Recreation Center, to the dirt roads at Deer River State Forest and the backroads of Champlain Valley. Our health doesn’t have to take a backseat this summer and neither should our safety. It’s important to remember that biking can involve risks, and teaching our children safe habits can lead to a lifetime of safe choices. Wearing a helmet is recommended for all ages, but children younger than 14 must wear an approved helmet under state law.

In livable rural communities like ours, biking can also be an alternative mode of transportation for many. Like motorists, individuals riding on our roads must adhere to traffic rules, such as staying in their lane, signaling before turns and yielding to emergency vehicles and pedestrians. Drivers should also be on the lookout for cyclists and stay at least 3 feet away from cyclists when passing, and beware of children who may dart out into the road. We’re lucky to have so many places where our families can go bike riding and explore all the North Country has to offer. As we take advantage of these wonderful opportunities, let’s remember that safety comes first. My door is always open. If you have questions about this or any other community issue, please contact my office at 518-5621986 or at JonesB@nyassembly.gov. ■

To ensure a safe ride when sharing the road, cyclists should be extra cautious around intersections and highway ramps – especially in Plattsburgh where cloverleaf exits connect to local streets. They should also watch out for opening car doors and cars that are pulling into

Call to action after gun violence

To the Editor: In the last 24 hours, almost 30 people have lost their lives to the madness that has overcome our country. White supremacists and religious bigots have decided that life is a zero-sum game, where any openness displayed to one person is assumed to be at the cost of another. However, an immigrant who believes in the words of Emma Lazarus, “Give me your tired, your poor...” does not diminish the blessings that all of us in this country enjoy. In an economy with record low unemployment, a woman or African-American who finds profitable employment does not do so at a cost to anyone else in this society. A person who worships in a temple or mosque does nothing to hinder those who worship in a cathedral or ashram. As our very articulate pastor at Putnam Presbyterian observes, God’s love extends equally to each and every one of his children. I don’t know how much worse our gun violence in this country must become before all of us decide that there must be an end to it, but inaction at this point only invites mass killing into every state and town in the country. Ticonderoga, Moriah, Putnam, Dresden and other communities in the reach of this paper will not be exempt. Is it enough when you come to bury one of your own family members? Can you believe that God’s mercy extends to all of your neighbors without regard to nationality, race, gender or political persuasion? When have you had enough? - Richard Barney, Ticonderoga ■

The real haters and dividers

To the Editor: A recent writer accused President Trump of being divisive and having a racist base. My observation is that the real haters and dividers are those who call me deplorable and racist because I don’t agree with them and believe in God and the Constitution. These are the people who tried to divide us by an “investigation” that cost millions of dollars into a “crime” that never happened. Now that’s real hate. - Mike Reynolds, Jay ■ (This letter is in response to Jay DeMarco’s letter, “Trump aims to divide,” published in the Aug. 3 edition of The Sun.)

Got running shoes? Moriah Chamber hosts second-annual run/walk

PORT HENRY | Runners and walkers are being encouraged by the Moriah Chamber of Commerce to participate in the second-annual Moriah Labor Day Dash. The 3.7-mile-long course begins at Town Hall

and proceeds up Broad Street to Forge Hollow Road to Stone Street and back to Broad. The course is billed as both scenic and hilly, but also kid friendly, said Catherine Sprague, the chamber’s event coordinator. “You can walk or run; it’s a healthy way to keep your body moving,” she said. The run is set for Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will be held rain or shine. It is being promoted by Wilson Endurance Sports, and preregistration

will be available at coachmarkwilson.com, or by stopping by the Chamber office. The first 100 entries get a T-shirt courtesy of Crown Point Telephone. Registration is $20 in advance and $30 the day of the race. Children 17 and under can register for $10. Proceeds benefit the Moriah Labor Day Fireworks Celebration. Awards will be presented to male and female winners and 10-year age groups. ■

Measles outbreak reaches Quebec Health departments urge vaccines for all

doesn’t mean Clinton and Essex Counties can’t take precautions. In fact, precautions, by vaccination, is the main thing that will prevent an outbreak in the area. “Measles outbreaks are occurring worldwide,” according to a recent Clinton County Health Department news release. “International travelers who are not vaccinated or otherwise immune to measles and other communicable diseases run the risk of bringing these illnesses back home with them to affect their family and their community.” Two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination gives a 97 percent chance of immunity against the disease. The doses are administered 28 days apart, and parents are especially encouraged to vaccinate their infants and children. “If you have questions or concerns about measles and/or if you don’t know whether you have ever received the MMR vaccine, check with your healthcare provider,” suggested the Essex County Health Department. “If you don’t have a healthcare provider, call your local health department. There is no harm in getting another dose of MMR vaccine even if you are already protected against measles (or mumps or rubella). To learn more about measles, visit health.ny.gov/publications/2170/.” New York has also set up a measles hotline in the midst of this breakout. For anybody with questions on measles or the vaccine, call 888-364-4837. ■

GOT IMMUNIZED?

By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | Health departments in the North Country are urging everyone in the area to make sure they are vaccinated against measles, and if not, to get the immunization shot. The outbreak of measles was recently confirmed across the border in Quebec, only a half hour drive from Plattsburgh. Measles are at an all time high in America in 25 years, reaching almost 1,200 cases. According to a news release previously sent out by the health department in May of this year, “Measles affects the lungs and airways. It causes a rash and fever, and may lead to serious symptoms. Many people with measles have complications such as diarrhea, ear infections or pneumonia. Ear infections occur in about one out of every 10 children with measles and can result in permanent hearing loss. Measles can lead to a brain infection which can cause permanent brain damage. A small number of people who get measles will need hospitalization and if complications including pneumonia or encephalitis (brain swelling)

Plattsburgh, immunization clinics are held on the first floor of the Clinton County Health Department at 32 Court St. The dates and times of these clinics can be found on the events calendar on the Health Department’s website. Call 518-565-4848 to schedule and appointment. ■ occur, death can result. Measles during pregnancy increases the risk of early labor, miscarriage and low birth weight infants. Measles can be more severe in people with weak immune systems.” Measles can be spread before symptoms even start, so if someone who isn’t vaccinated was possibly exposed to measles, they should see their health care provider immediately to get a vaccination. They should also get any unvaccinated family members or friends that they spent time with to go to the doctor as well. “The most important thing is knowing your vaccination status,” Peggy LaBombard with the Clinton County Health Department said. “If you are not vaccinated, you should get it as soon as possible.” Though most cases of measles in the U.S. were found in southern New York and the city, that

NCCC employees receive SUNY Chancellor Awards Becky LaDue, Malinda Chapman, Arlene Carr honored

TICONDEROGA | A trio of North Country Community College (NCCC) employees have been recognized as among the best in their institution and within the State University of New York system. Becky LaDue, Malinda Chapman and Arlene Carr were recently named recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. LaDue received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, which recognizes the contributions of teaching faculty both inside and outside the classroom. A 2000 graduate of the college, LaDue started her career at NCCC as a radiologic technology instructor in 2004. She became the program’s clinical coordinator in 2008 and has directed the rad tech program since 2015, first on an interim basis and permanently since May of last year. “Becky is a respected, revered and compassionate teacher who challenges her students to be their best,” NCCC President Dr. Steve Tyrell said. “She prepares her students for an intensive applied learning experience at clinical sites across the North Country. On campus, LaDue is known for her college spirit and enthusiasm.” Chapman is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching, given in recognition of teaching and contribution to institutional quality in instruction. An adjunct instructor on and off since 1989, Chapman has taught human biology and many other courses at the college’s Ticonderoga campus.

NCCC ranks high with SUNY for financial stability More diverse programs, new delivery systems available for students

TICONDEROGA | North Country Community College (NCCC) is among the top SUNY community colleges in the state when it comes to financial health and stability. A recent report issued by SUNY calculated the financial composite score for all its 30 community colleges, ranking them on a scale of +3.0 to -3.0, with +3.0 being the highest mark of financial health. The report considered each college’s reserves, ability to borrow, and financial viability and efficiency, among other factors, in determining its ranking. In 2017, the most recent year from which audit data was available, North Country

Community College had a score of +2.9 and was tied with Monroe Community College at the top of the financial health rankings. This indicator follows another recent SUNY report that shows NCCC has the secondbest fund balance/operating budget ratio among the 30 state community colleges. Based on data from the 2017-18 budget year, the college holds in its reserves or fund balance 33 percent of its operating budget, twice what is recommended by the Government Finance Officers Association. NCCC President Dr. Steve Tyrell attributed the college’s position in these rankings to sound financial planning through the addition of more diverse academic program offerings and alternative delivery systems. “These indicators show the financial stability the college has achieved and are a result of its desire to provide residents of the North Country region with new programs that are delivered in a manner that best serves these

residents,” Tyrell said.

ADULT LEARNERS

As NCCC and its peer institutions faced a decline of enrollment in 2011-14, it began to target adult learners with new academic program offerings. Today, 80 percent of its enrolled students are adult learners. It also began to seek niched sites to offer academic programs. In 2016, NCCC was the only community college in the state with a double-digit increase in enrollment. This was accomplished by stabilizing the current decline in enrollment and by serving correctional facilities with academic programs through the Second Chance Pell initiative. Two years ago, the college began to offer online degree programs for adult learners. Now, NCCC’s full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment currently runs approximately 200 FTEs above the smallest community colleges in the state. In 2012, it was the smallest of the 30 community colleges.

Recently, the college designed new delivery systems for adult learners. Beginning this year, students can complete three credit classes in 7.5 week-blocks. By enrolling in multiple blocks a year, they can finish their associate degree in fewer than two years. Another initiative in Ticonderoga will allow students to complete classes online and on campus Saturdays. “The recent string of small college closures in the Northeast region certainly has given institutions of higher education reason to pause and evaluate the stability of their financial position,” Tyrell said. “For it to maintain this strong financial position, North Country Community College will need to continue to explore and refine how it can deliver an academic credential in a manner that is most desirable to an adult learner. With a robust fund balance, it is well positioned to explore new strategies on how it will continue to stabilize enrollment and fortify its current financial position.” ■

Stewart’s awards grant to PRIDE of Ti Stewart’s program boosts PRIDE’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors

PRIDE’s assistance reduces the daily fee for the Summer Program to only $2 per day, which enables many more children to attend. This assistance comes via PRIDE’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors program. We very much appreciate Stewart’s support of our efforts to help local children. The Summer Youth Program runs for five weeks and will end Aug. 9. Program registration forms and applications for the PRIDE assistance are still available at the Ticonderoga Town Clerk’s office. In addition to the supervised activities, the summer program includes breakfast and lunch each day. The cafeteria at Ticonderoga Elementary-Middle School is an open site, which means that any child 18 and under can go the Ticonderoga Middle School and receive a free breakfast and/or lunch. However, transportation to and from this site is not provided.

TICONDEROGA | PRIDE of Ticonderoga recently received a $2,000 grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program.

HELPS FUNDS YOUTH PROGRAM

These grant funds are now being used to help 30 deserving children attend the Ticonderoga Summer Youth Program and enjoy the supervised recreation programs of the day camp and swimming at scenic Ticonderoga Beach.

Saturday’s ‘Adirondack Shindig’ to feature tours of restored historic church Live music, yard sales, socializing prominent in annual event By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

HORICON | A much-anticipated community event held annually in a hamlet near the border of Warren and Essex counties — and which features live music, dancing, food and raffles as well as dozens of yard sales —

has a new focus this year. Adirondack Shindig, to occur Saturday Aug. 10 in the hamlet of Adirondack adjacent to Schroon Lake, is to feature tours of the former Union Church, which has been restored for use by the Town of Horicon Historical Society. The restoration project for the 1881 church, ongoing for years, included constructing a new foundation, installing a new roof, repairing the steeple, restoring substantial damage to the interior walls, ceilings and floors, and installing new electrical wiring and lighting. The yard sales — with tables of new and used goods set up primarily around the

The former Union Church in the hamlet of Adirondack NY has been restored by volunteers investing thousands of hours of work into a project backed with a $100,000 state grant and about $50,000 in donations. Tours of the church, to be used as an annex to the Town of Horicon Historical Museum, are to be conducted at the annual Adirondack Shindig celebration set for Aug. 10.

Area residents and visitors are annually drawn to Adirondack Shindig, a community event that features live music, dancing, socializing, food — and is accompanied by yard sales of new and used goods. The event, set for Saturday Aug. 10 this year, is held in the hamlet of Adirondack near the east shore of Schroon Lake. Photo provided

memorial park downtown, are to be held between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., although some browsers arrive earlier. The tours of the restored church — as well as the live music and most of the socializing — will be occurring from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. People taking the tour will have the opportunity to ring its historic bell. Those doing so can leave a donation, nominal or substantial, towards completion of the restoration work. The church is now owned by the town of Horicon, and the restoration was funded primarily with a $100,000 state grant as well as $50,000 in donations from area citizens. Thousands of hours were invested by local volunteers into the restoration work. The building is to be utilized as an annex to the Horicon Historical Museum in Brant Lake, as well as use as a community center for citizens residing in the hamlet of Adirondack and its surroundings. Prepared food will be available, primarily from the historic 160-year-old Adirondack General Store, recently acquired by Joe and Yvette Gallacchi. Raffles of donated goods and services are to be held, and various homemade baked goods and desserts of Warrensburg’s J. Gallup Farms are to be on sale.

Musical entertainment will be provided by The North Country Boys — Andy Smith and Bob Gagnon — performing in front of the historic church. People attending Adirondack Shindig are encouraged to bring chairs. John Donovan, the Historical Society’s church reconstruction project coordinator, said the restored building will house many significant historical artifacts that haven’t yet been on public display due to the limited space in the town museum in Brant Lake. A formal grand re-opening of the restored former Union Church is to be held next spring, Donovan said. Adirondack Shindig coordinator Kathy Hill credited Donovan for writing a grant application, totalling hundreds of pages, which secured the $100,000 state grant. Hill said that besides its role as a treasured community celebration, Adirondack Shindig has another purpose: raising awareness that a community titled “Adirondack” does indeed exist. “This event is so important for Adirondack,” she said. “It brings recognition to the fact that the town of Horicon has two fabulous hamlets, Adirondack and Brant Lake, instead of just one,” she said. ■

Benedict, Racine named to committee By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

ELIZABETHTOWN | A pair of Section VII athletes have been chosen to represent local student-athletes as part of a state panel that gives those who play the game a voice with state leaders. The 22-member Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), part of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), will include 10 returning members and 12 new members. Among the returning members is Ticonderoga senior Terrence Benedict, a threesport athlete who was a key member of the 2019 Class C state championship Sentinel baseball team. Northeastern Clinton junior Abrielle Racine will also serve on the SAAC. The junior has been a member of the past two Section VII/ Class C girls basketball titles and 2018 final four run. Racine was also a member of the varsity soccer and track teams.

Ticonderoga’s Terrence Benedict and Northeastern Clinton’s Abrielle Racine have been named to the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2019-20 school year. The Sun file photos

“We are excited to welcome the new members and the returning members of the SAAC this school year,” NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas said. “Having student voices in our organization is key to providing feedback to further enhance and improve our programs with our member schools. We congratulate the members of the SAAC on their selection to this committee and look forward to their ideas and contributions during the upcoming school year.” The SAAC will meet four times via teleconference during the school year. During the 2018-19 school year, the committee created NYSPHSAA Mental Health Awareness Week and had the opportunity to provide input on several proposals including the transfer rule and exceeding the maximum number of contests rule. This year, the committee will continue to promote the mental health initiative while focusing on the creation of a NYSPHSAA Leadership Conference and continue to provide feedback on Executive Committee proposals. ■
