HAGUE Ñ The Independence party gets started a day early in the town of Hague, where fireworks and a concert will take place Friday, July 3.

The Music in the Park Series will take place starting at 6 p.m. in the Hague Town Park. Those attending are asked to bring their own lawn chairs to enjoy an evening of music.

At around 8:45 p.m., the fireworks will begin.

TICONDEROGA Ñ The Best 4th In The North Committee, a subcommittee of the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, announce the schedule for the 2015 Best 4th In The North Celebration.

The celebration will take place Wednesday, July 1 through July 4, with a grand fireworks display, parade, the Montcalm Mile, as well as a variety of live music, food, vendors, rides, games, and much more throughout the four day celebration.

The Best Fourth in the North Celebration attracts many visitors to the Ticonderoga area every year, which supports many local businesses and the local

Montcalm Mile now part of Ti tradition, growing from 25 to 400 TICONDEROGA Ñ About 400 runners will race through downtown Ticonderoga in the Montcalm Mile July 4. It wasnÕ t always that way.

The Ò Best Fourth in the NorthÓ tradition began in 1987 with 25 participants racing just ahead of the communityÕ s Independence Day parade.

“The first Montcalm Mile, on July 4, 1987, started at the Ticonderoga town shed,Ó said Jim Cunningham, who directed the event its first 25 years. “Registration? It was done at the back end of a pick-up truck. Index cards were given to finishers for this first race. They (runners) were asked to time themselves and write their time on that cards.

Finishers were given a ribbon.

There were prizes for first place in four age groups; gift certificates for a StewardÕ s ice cream cone. For the first race there were 25 competitors, mostly club members and runners from the high school program.Ó A lot has changed. When the 29th annual Montcalm Mile is held July 4 it will have electronic timing, computerized results, cash prizes and runners from across the country. Last yearÕ s race had people from 29 states and three countries.

Registration for the 2015 Montcalm Mile is now open.

Ò That day was chosen since there was a parade and potential spectators,Ó he said. Ò Initially, the spectators for the following parade just stared with a puzzled expression as runners past by. Eventually the race became an anticipated highlight.Ó Cunningham, Kiely and Dave Rutkowski, all LaChute Road Runners charter members, remain active in the administration of the Montcalm Mile. Ò During the years the course has basically remained the same, but the race has grown from 25 competitors in 1987 to 327 in

2014,Ó Cunningham said. Ò The club is looking forward to providing a quality race for another 29 years!Ó A record field is expected for the 2015 Montcalm Mile. Ò The race grows in popularity every year,Ó Fred Herbst, current race director, said. Ò WeÕ ve had a record number of participants each of the last five years. With July 4th falling on a Saturday this year, we anticipate about 400 runners this summer. Ò The Montcalm Mile has become a great community tradition,Ó he said. Ò ItÕ s rare to have an event that features elite athletes, recreational runners, children and families. It gets bigger and better every year.Ó The 29th annual one mile road race, again being held July 4th just prior to TiconderogaÕ s Ò Best Fourth in the NorthÓ parade, will again offer prize money Ñ adding masters and veterans classes this year Ñ in

an effort to attract another top field of competitors.

With a menÕ s course record of 3 minutes, 54 seconds, the Montcalm Mile is believed to be the fastest mile anywhere in New York and Vermont, outside New York City. Ò Our goal is make the race one of the most competitive events in the North Country while remaining a fun, familyfriendly race,Ó Herbst said.

To accomplish that goal the Montcalm Mile will award prize money to men and women in three classes Ñ open elite, masters elite for ages 40-49 and veterans elite for ages 50 and older.

The open elite class will pay $300 to the menÕ s and womenÕ s winners with $200 to second place and $100 to third place. In the masters and veterans classes first place men and women will receive $150 with second place getting $100 and third place $50.

Runners must register in the elite divisions to be eligible for prize money.

Runners in the recreational class will be eligible for a raffle.

Kinetic Running of Plattsburgh will provide a free pair of Altra menÕ s and womenÕ s shoes for a random drawing of bib numbers. Two pair of shoes will be awarded.

The Montcalm Mile course records are 3:54 set by Lee Berube in the menÕ s race and 4:43 set by Sara Dunham in the womenÕ s race.

ItÕ s a downhill course that virtually assures runners of personal bests and attracts most of the regionÕ s top athletes. Also attracting runners is the fact the race is run minutes prior to TiconderogaÕ s annual Fourth of July parade, which means

hundreds of spectators line the course offering encouragement.

The Montcalm Mile, the largest participation event in Ticonderoga every year, will team with RaceWire for computerized chip timing and scoring in 2015.

To facilitate the scoring system, runners are asked to register for the race online at montcalmmile.racewire.com or at the LaChute Road Runners Club website Ñ www.lachute.us Limited race day registration starts at noon at the starting line at the intersection of Wicker Street and Race Track Road.

The club has awarded $15,000 in college scholarships the past 11 years.

Ticonderoga HS seniors shine with annual project presentations

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — It is the final rite of passage for members of the graduating class at Ticonderoga Central School: Annually, the senior students participate in senior projects, working throughout the school year on a project they have a passion for. Ò You see a wide array of topics from real academic topics to hobbies they enjoy,Ó said project coordinator Kimberly Powers. Ò The senior projects went very well,Ó high school principal John Donohue said. Ò The variety of projects really showed the diversity of our studentsÕ interests. We are very proud of all of our seniors and can not wait to see what they accomplish in the future.Ó Ò These Seniors have so much talent and itÕ s great to see them excel,Ó Powers said. Ò Every year I tell the students to pick a project that they feel passionate about and this year was no exception. The level of dedication that the students showed was amazing. Project guidelines require a minimum of 20 hours on the project; however, this year we had some students completing in excess of 100 hours. This is quite an accomplishment. This is a very talented group of young people with a huge potential for success in the future.Ó Again this year, projects were as wide-ranging as were the passions of the students. Each stands in front of a panel of five Ò judges,Ó many of whom have been to several senior project days.

“I think this was a very fine year for the projects,” said Bob Deidrick. Ò I saw seven or eight this year and they were all high quality.Ó The judging panel also includes one member from the previous yearÕ s graduating class who knows well the nervousness and tension a senior may feel. Ò It is a very different experience being in this chair,Ó Class of 2014 graduate Kaitlin Diskin said before one presentation. Ò You do realize what they are going through.Ó

Ticonderoga Car chase ends in manhunt, apparent suicide Added police in area concerned locals fearing Clinton escapees

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ A car chase which turned into a manhunt ended with the discovery of a body in the early morning hours of June 18.

Ticonderoga Police Chief Mark Johns said his department was called to an ambulance assist around 8 p.m. June 17 for a potential drug overdose. Ò People were concerned for his well being,Ó Johns said.

The suspect, whose name is not being released until the investigation is completed, was able to get into a car and leave the house.

“An officer spotted him on Champlain Avenue and attempted

a pullover,Ó Johns said. Ò The suspect took off which resulted in a chase of about one mile.Ó The chase ended near the intersection of Shore Airport Road and Route 22, where the suspect left the car and started for a wooded area.

Johns said during a foot pursuit, officers noticed the suspect was carrying a firearm, and opted to set up a perimeter and call for additional resources, which included New York State Police (NYSP), an NYSP Aviation helicopter, Ticonderoga EMS, Ticonderoga Fire Department and Essex County SheriffÕ s Department.

The response of law enforcement personnel to the Ticonderoga area had people linking the incident on social media to the ongoing search for a pair of escaped inmates from the Clinton Correctional Facility. Ò It was made clear to all other agencies this was not part of that situation,Ó Johns said.

Johns said as officers were setting up the perimeter around the area where the suspect was to last seen, officers heard a pair of

gunshots coming from within.

At that point, officers started to search the wooded area, with help from the newest member of the Ticonderoga Police Department, K-9 officer Tusko and handler Heather Genier. Ò Tusko did exactly as trained,Ó Johns said. Ò He picked up a scent and led us to an entry location.Ó Officers eventually found the suspect within the perimeter, dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Johns added Tusko, who has barely been out of training school for two weeks, has already been in key situations for the department. Ò Within a week of his return from training he was involved in an apprehension, so he already had some experience under the collar,Ó he said. Ò He has performed as well as we expected him to.Ó Johns said more information would be available as the investigation concludes.

Rain barrel art to promote Ti area conservation, community Groups can pay $60 to be part of public art project

christopher@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ Businesses and organizations in Ticonderoga are teaming up for a public art fund-raiser that could also inspire people to deal with rain in an environmentally-friendly way.

The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership has organized the 2015 Street Art Project, which will see various organizations decorating and displaying rain barrels along the Montcalm Street corridor.

The “Rain Barrels” exhibit will be the fifth street art project organized by the nonprofit group, which focuses on improvements to TiconderogaÕ s traditional business district. Ò The goal of the street art project is to decorate our sidewalks and stores with handcrafted, hand-painted art work done by local artists as a way to create additional visual interest in the downtown area,Ó the partnership announced in a statement last week.

Organizers say again this year theyÕ re counting on local businesses and organizations to help the public art display flourish.

The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, June 30.

Those interested can pay $60 to put their creative mark on a big blue barrel. The items will be auctioned off in September.

But besides raising dollars for the organization, the public art display will shed light on a form of water conservation, as homeowners and visitors take note of how the barrels also serve a function. Ò ThatÕ s the goal,Ó said Andrew Rasmus, a member of the partnership and co-chairman of the street art auction.

Rain barrels, which are often placed near a gutterÕ s downspout or next to a house to collect rainwater, ease the flow of water into the sewer system.

A typical barrel, which holds about 50 gallons of water, can be used for many things including watering gardens and preventing basement flooding.

Rasmus, who is a co-owner of LibbyÕ s Bakery Cafe on Montcalm Street, said heÕ s noticed a host of concerns with the stormwater system over his time in Ticonderoga.

Ò If there was a huge interest we could do it again the next year,Ó he said.

The decorated rain barrels are set to be auctioned off at an event Sept. 9 at EddieÕ s Restaurant in Ticonderoga. More details will be announced later this summer.

Rasmus said the group had sold about a dozen rain barrels as of late last week, but a few others remain. He said he’s confident the community will rally around the event .

Previous public art displays organized by the group have seen shopkeepers exhibiting wooden soldiers, Adirondacks chairs and bird houses.

raduates, your time has finally come. No more gym, full-day/5-day a week classes or dreaded school lunches. For some of you, it may mean more math. For others, it could mean more home economics. For all, it means advice Ñ advice from parents, friends, teachers and mentors. Now itÕ s our turn: YouÕ re done. For those of you who have mapped out your life trajectory Ñ congrats. WeÕ re sure youÕ ll make all the right moves and be successful in your career path. Still unsure? There is no need to be alarmed. Go out there and gain some life experience, be it travel, working a dirty job or learning a vocational skill. After a year, if you decide to pursue higher education, you’ll find yourself more well-rounded and adjusted than your classmates who leapt headfirst into a diploma mill. Ñ R yan Edwards With high school graduations in full swing, many already have an idea of whatÕ s next Ñ at least whatÕ s in the short term, whether itÕ s college, trade school or right into a job. HereÕ s the thing: YouÕ re 18 (or so). YouÕ ve got time. You wouldnÕ t take out a loan for a house or car sight unseen, so why do the same for a potential career? Get your hands dirty, take risks, seek an internship or apprenticeship. Try before you buy, and have some fun doing so along the way. Ñ Andrew Johnstone Congrats, graduates! YouÕ re on your way to bigger and brighter things. For those of you going off to college, try new things. With college, the possibilities of what you can accomplish are endless. Start off slow your first year. Get a feel of your classes, teachers and homework load. Take a few electives and general education courses. Who knows? You might find interest in another field. As for the graduates jumping right into the workforce, get out and get experience. Even if you start out as a burger flipper or cashier, take it as an opportunity to build skills and work your way up. We all have to start somewhere. This is your time to start anew.

Make time to think about life and all the possibilities it brings along with those who you affect and who affect you. Originality means more

To the Editor, I have been reading with interest the exchange between Mr. Binczik and Mr. Sharkey on the Pledge of Allegiance; and I think itÕ s time to approach this subject from a different perspective. Putting aside for a moment the notions of politics, ideology and faith letÕ s explore the poetry of the PledgeÕ s language.

I remember reciting the Pledge in Third Grade, before Congress took on the responsibility to sanctify its universal appeal. It was not too long after the end of World War II, and each morning I stood in the classroom facing the flag, with my right hand over my heart and, with the other eight and nine-year-olds, intoning the resonant cadences of affirmation of loyalty to my country in words precisely juxtaposed to heighten their impact: Ò . . . one Nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Ó The Pledge achieves its power because its author toiled to place the right word in the right position while maintaining a certain beat and cadence as if the meter performs the function of a drum. To alter that spoils the effect. One cannot perfect perfection. Inserting the phrase Ò under G-dÓ not only skews the cadence it corrupts the interface between Ò one NationÓ and Ò indivisibleÓ , diminishing the power of each. Ò NationÓ implies a multitude, and in the case of America, a diverse multitude. Ò IndivisibleÓ implies a singularity. Ò . . . one Na-

Grant for Ti Festival Guild benefits community activities

At the K of C Pavilion, Kim and Reggie Harris will entertain the children with Songs of the South and the Underground Railroad. The Adirondack Shakespeare Company will lead the art project at the Museum where the cast of actors will show the children how to make their own Native American Wampum Belt or Sea Turtle Wednesday, Aug. 5. TICONDEROGA Ñ The Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, has awarded a grant to the Ticonderoga Festival Guild. This grant supports the free Arts Trek childrenÕ s programs. The DEC Grant has enabled the Ticonderoga Festival Guild, working closely with the Heritage Museum to schedule a fantastic lineup of programs for the summer on Wednesday mornings beginning July 8 and ending Aug. 12. The theme for the programs is Ò Heritage FestivalÓ and programs will explore how art, song, music, and stories have been used to drive the pace of work, to educate, to communicate and to bring joy to people. Each morning will start at 9 a.m., at the Heritage Museum with an art project then at 10:15 a.m. Everyone will move to the Knights of Columbus Pavilion for music, songs, stories and theater.

Children will paint and decorate their own wooden sea faring vessel at the Museum then move to the K of C Pavilion they will enjoy Sea Songs, Chanteys and Nautical Lore performed by Tom Callinan Wednesday, July 8. Green peppers and the summer solstice

tÕ s summer. Some of us pay attention to the solstice. Others donÕ t. I didnÕ t stare at the western sky and my watch to see if it really was the longest day of the year. For me, it was just another date on the calendar. IÕ ve seen many of them in my long life and most have been just fine.

Some of us are not happy unless we have something to gripe about and the weather is almost always in the top three on the list. Our North Country spring weather was variable, interesting

The ground warmed enough for Kaye to put some beautiful flowers in the ground and I got dirt under my fingernails while planting vegetable plants and seeds.

To say they are all thriving would not be quite accurate. Most are still upright, though, and leaves chewed off by our lovely, little, brown bunny are beginning to be replaced by new ones. My original cucumber plants apparently grew downward rather than upward, so I planted others and they are fine. Most of the bean plants are thriving and a few are showing signs of blossoms. ThatÕ s a good thing.

When Beatrice the bunny nibbled the leaves off about three tomato plants, I was about to give up the ghost; but generous rain and a few warm afternoons worked wonders and they all appear to be bouncing back. Well, perhaps bouncing isnÕ t the right word. Struggling would be more like it. Suffice to say, they wonÕ t be ready for the metal cages for some time. Fresh garden tomatoes are our favorites, so I must guard and nurture them until harvest.

Kaye found half an envelope of last year Õ s green bean seeds and we put them underground, hoping for the best. Well, the best was that just two of them popped up and weÕ re thinking of a higher fence to keep Beatrice (we just named her this morning) away.

What can you say about green peppers? The world would be sadder without them and our plants are doing well, thank you.

I rarely take my coffee out to the back porch at 5 a.m. each day unless the thermometer reads more than 50 degrees. My Facebook friends expect my daily posting of the current warmth and wind and sky conditions. On the day I wrote this, it was over 62 with no wind. Ideal conditions for morning contemplation. I did notice another crop that is doing much better than I expected or wanted. That involves green things popping up along the river bank. The copious sky water has given the shrubs and bushes and saplings a huge growth spurt sending them above the fence and obstructing our view.

I see a trimming session in my near future, but Kaye is trembling at the thought. There is something about an old, fat man straddling the rocks while balancing a hedge trimmer and a long power cord that conjures up a nasty scene.

Yes, I have tumbled over the bank a couple times and have cracked a few ribs. I have bent a few eyeglass frames and have moaned and groaned while clawing my way up to safety.

Can you blame her? Being a sometimes bumbling southpaw with an impressive resume full of such near disasters, I guess I have a negative history of river bank rambling. The best way to handle the situation is to grab my long extension pole with a cutter and a long rope and tackle that green mass from the safe side of the fence. Of course that leaves the possibility of getting my two left feet tangled in the rope.

Whatever happens, your chances of seeing video highlights of these shenanigans, are nil.

For such tomfoolery, no cameras are allowed.

But, if you happen to drive by and hear loud words that are unseemly from the area behind our Morrisonville home, and a sigh from the sprightly little lady watching it all happenÑ youÕ ll know IÕ m just trying to live up to my reputation.

Ticonderoga. Charles M. Campney, Jr., 48, of Ticonderoga, passed away unexpectedly, on Thursday, June 18, 2015.

Born in Albany, New York, March 1, 1967, he was the son of the late Charles Sr. and Gail (Millington) Campney.

Mr. Campney was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, both of Ticonderoga, and also served as a Veterans mentor in Elizabethtown.

He has been a resident of Ticonderoga for many years and was employed by the International Paper Company of Ticonderoga.

He umpired many local

youth softball, football and baseball games, and served as President of the Girls Softball League. He was also an umpire for the Northern and Southern Division Girls Softball teams.

Survivors include his wife, Aimee J. (Towne) Campney; three daughters, Trisha Stricker, Megan Campney and Carly Campney, all of Ticonderoga; one brother, Mike Campney of Witherbee; and one sister, Laurie Campney of Ticonderoga. He is also survived by his nephew, Ezra Long and his granddaughter, Marlee Stricker.

Calling hours for relatives and friends were held Tuesday, June 23, 2015, from 4 5:30 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga.

A Memorial Service with Military Honors followed on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ticonderoga Spanish class receives grant for iPads TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga High School Spanish department recently received a competitive educational grant from the Adirondack Foundation to enhance language learning through technology and online applications. The high school Spanish classroom now has five iPads.

The grant was awarded from the Adirondack Foreign Language Enhancement Fund.

The goal of the Adirondack Foundation grant is to provide support for language teachers

in our BOCES region, supporting especially innovate programs that collaborate using technology with nearby schools in the area. The Ticonderoga application is entitled Ò Tap the screen and make a connection! - Locally and Globally!Ó The iPads now stationed in the classroom are being used to participate in Spanish language Skype with students in Spain and northern New York. The iPads also contain educational applications for classroom projects and foreign

language development. The App Duolingo allows for proficiency practice in the Spanish language, while the App 30hands enables use of audio and video in student developed projects. The grant provides for the purchase of additional Apps as needed and the opportunity to apply in future years to increase the number of iPads and Apps as needed.

Stewart awards Pride with $1,000 grant TICONDEROGA Ñ PRIDE of Ticonderoga recently received a $1,000 grant from the StewartÕ s Holiday Match Program. The Holiday Match is the program whereby Stewarts matches customer donations made in all of their shops from Thanksgiving through Christmas. The program raised more than $1.5 million in 2014 and has donated $20 million to local area nonprofits since the program began in 1986, all for the benefit of local area children.

The funds will be used to help children from income eligible families attend the Ticonderoga Summer Youth Program and enjoy the supervised recreation programs of the day camp and swimming at the scenic Ticonderoga Beach. PRIDEÕ s assistance reduces the daily fee for the Summer Program to only $2 per day which enables many more children to attend. This assistance comes via PRIDEÕ s, Neighbors Helping Neighbors program. They very much appreciate StewartÕ s support of our efforts to help local children.

The Summer Youth Program runs for five weeks starting Monday, July 13 and ending Friday, Aug. 14. Program registration forms and applications for the PRIDE assistance are available at the Ticonderoga Town Clerk’s office. In addition to the supervised activities, the Summer Program includes breakfast and lunch each day. Further, Ticonderoga is an Open Site which means that any child 18 & under can go the Ticonderoga Middle School and receive a free breakfast and/or lunch. However, transportation to and from this site is not provided.

Stewart’s grant match TMSP TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership (TMSP) recently received a grant for $1,000 from the StewartÕ s Holiday Match Program. The Holiday Match is the program wherein Stewarts matches customer donations made in all of their shops from Thanksgiving through Christmas. The program raised more than $1.5 million in 2014 and has donated $20 million to local area nonprofits since the program began in 1986, all for the benefit of local area children.

The funds were used by TMSP to organize another event in conjunction with local High School students and teachers to shop for and donate non-perishable foods to the Ticonderoga Food Pantry.

Seven groups of students were allocated $178 each to shop for as much food as possible. The students were organized into teams and competed to see who could buy the most food for the Food Pantry while staying within their budget. Teachers served as mentors and encouraged the teams of students to make maximum use of coupons, discounts, and sales. Ticonderoga High School students and teachers also do the Stuff-A-Bus for the Food Pantry in December.

This Ò shopping spreeÓ is a second event which is timed for when the Food PantryÕ s shelves tend to run low. It serves as a learning exercise for the students as well as a community service for needy families in our area. We very much appreciate StewartÕ s support for our efforts.

Putnam board election results challenged

christopher@denpubs.com PUTNAM Ñ Two school board candidates who lost their bids for office last month in the Putnam Central School District are challenging the result of the election with an appeal to the New York State Education Department.

Casey King and Allen Moore, who ran for the seats in the Washington County district, are seeking Òa stay of the results,Ó from the May 19 election, according to a petition submitted last week.

The petition names Putnam Central School District Superintendent Matthew Boucher, district clerk Kim Brown and successful school board candidates Jodie Bruce and Farley Tierney as respondents.

Depending on the state education commissionerÕ s action, the two winning board members could find themselves facing another election.

The 10-page petition raises questions about discrepancies in the number of votes cast and voters disqualified. Specifically, it points out results would have been different in the race between King and Tierney if only 7 of 15 rejected votes had not been thrown out.

The filing further challenges whether district officials followed the proper procedures to ensure all voters were at least 18 years of age and met residency requirements. On Election Day, Ò dozens, if not more,Ó of the voters were either underage, unregistered or non-residents, according to the petition. Such a large presence of underage voters, combined with similar allega-

tions of unregistered or non-residents, could have changed poll results, the petitioners contend.

King noticed many young voters on Election Day showing up at the polls, which didnÕ t correlate with expected voting patterns, according to the petition. The filing also details how one resident saw an underage person, Ò place his ballot in the ballot box.Ó In the filing, Katherine McNamara, the lawyer for the two petitioners, contends, Ò voter irregularity in this case is substantial and not merely technical in nature and so also warrants setting aside the board member election results.Ó Another aspect brought up in the filing states that voter turnout, which was between 260 and 270 voters, was up around 300 percent compared to previous election years. The filing also raises concerns that a voter list requested under the stateÕ s Freedom of Information Law had not been fulfilled and questions whether Tierney had met residency requirements for the office.

A state education department said the commissioner’s office had received the appeal. After the office receives the opposition papers from the Putnam school districtÕ s attorney, a decision will be made on the stay request, education department spokesman Tom Dunn said Tuesday via email.

Reached by phone on Tuesday, Boucher, the superintendent, said the districtÕ s attorney plans to respond to the petition in a timely manner. Boucher said Ò thereÕ s no merit to the caseÓ but declined to comment on specifics of the petition.

The district has about three weeks to respond to the petition, according to the filing.

PAC wrestling event at North Hudson campsite raises funds for autism

keith@denpubs.com NORTH HUDSON Ñ There were turnbuckles and body slams for a good cause at the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park Campsite June 20.

Performance Art Connection, a non-profit organization based in Moriah that specializes in action wrestling shows to support the various needs of their local communities, joined with the campsite to put on the event as a fundraiser for the Upstate Autism Alliance based out of Glens Falls.

In total, this Ò Backwoods Brawl,Ó event raised $3,000. Ò We had the donations along with 10 per cent of the camping fees and all the proceeds from the concessions,Ó Gina Lenhard, who co-owns the site with husband Mike, said. Ò Our volunteers were seasonal campers as well as members of our staff.Ó

Lenhard said the event also received an assist from Schroon Lake Central School, which provided a bus and driver to help bring in spectators. Ò They would park at Frontier Town and give their donation before we put them on the bus and took them into the park,Ó she said. Ò The driver was great and donated his time. We are very thankful the school did this for us.Ó The fundraiser was started in previous years as a way to give back to some members of the Jellystone Park camping community. Ò We had a couple who has an autistic child who has camped with us for a long time,Ó Lenhard said. Ò We actually have had a lot of families who come here with an autistic child. It is a very demanding disease. We chose this as an in-house community benefit.”

One of the parents, Lisa Janicke, provided shirts for the staff members to wear during the event.

Janicke was also a mutual friend who connected Lenhard to the Upstate Autism Alliance, and Kirstin Horwath. Ò When they wanted to do an event, Lisa got them together with us and that is how we became involved,Ó Horwath said. Ò We are thrilled with the outcome and how many people were involved this year. PAC really helped in getting the word out, as well, and they put on a great show going for two-and-a-half hours straight.Ó Horwath said the donations will go towards aiding community activities for children and their families who are part of the Autism spectrum. They also provide parent and educator trainings by sponsoring workshops in the area with national experts in the field.

Lenhard said they hope to make this partnership with PAC a tradition which will be held annually.

he Schroon Lake Senior Club events committee met recently to plan events for July. Things start off on July 1st with the General Meeting, followed by dinner at the Club.

On July 4, the senior bus will be driven in the parade by Wayne Dewey. The parade starts at 6 p.m. On July 12 the seniors are going to the Depot Theater in Westport to see Ô The BikinisÕ and will dine after the play at The Galley. The bus leaves the Club at 2 p.m. On July 15 the Gourmet Groupies will go to Mikado Japanese in Glens Falls. The bus leaves at 5 p.m.

July 16 the events committee will meet again to plan events for August. On July 17 the seniors are taking a boat ride around Lake Placid. The bus leaves at 12:30 p.m. July 22 there is a nutrition picnic in the North Hudson Park. The bus leaves at 10 a.m. On July 29 the board of directors will meet at the Club at 4 p.m.

In addition to these special events, the bus takes seniors to Ticonderoga every Tuesday afternoon to shop and makes two trips a month to Glens Falls for shopping or appointments. The annual Fourth of July parade will step off at 6 p.m. and run north up Main Street. The parade will honor the 100th anniversary of Seagle Music Colony as grand marshals of the event. Ò Seagle Music Colony was named Organization of the Year,Ó Whitty-Brown said. Ò They are going to have two floats, one for the Seagle Music Colony and one for the Seagle Music Colony Guild, and close to 50 people in the parade.Ó Seagle will join the Word of Life Collegians at dusk for a patriotic music concert which will take place at the town beach, which will be followed by the annual gala fireworks display over Schroon Lake.

The Adirondack Baskets Raffle will take place from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce office on Main Street.

Winners will be announced at 8 p.m., and participants do not need to be present to win. Ò Many of the baskets are themed baskets such as Adirondack books, Adirondack decor, Adirondack gifts, cooking, beach articles, dining, things to do on a rainy day and music concerts,Ó Whitty-Brown said. Ò Also, gift certificate baskets for outdoor activities such as

guide services, kayaking, canoeing, boating, or horseback riding are part of the raffle. Gift certificates for various services, dining and music events are also included with the basket raffle.”

The 36th annual chicken barbecue begins at 11 a.m. at the Schroon Lake Community Church. The menu includes half chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, roll, brownie and iced tea or lemonade. Cost is $10 per person and serving will take place until sold out.

From 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. there will be several events happening, including the Ò Bounce AroundÓ ; fun activities for children at the town park; the Ò Art Bucket,Ó featuring air-brushed tattoos; face painting and hair braiding; and the LionÕ s Club food tent at the town beach area.

Music will fill the air, also starting at 11 a.m., with performances being held at the beach area and starting with Mark Piper. Hot Pursuit will follow from noon until 2:30 p.m. and the Gregson Brothers Band performing from 3 until 5:30 p.m.

Other performances will include Sue Tillotson performing vocals and keyboard as part of Music on the Porch at the Community Church.

The Scotia/Glenville Pipe Band will warm up parade revelers at the Fountain in the Park from 5:30 until 6 p.m.

MINEVILLE Ñ Laura Baker is used to giving people sweet treats. But last week the roles were flipped when members of the Moriah Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to formally welcome The Ò BakerÓ y to Mineville.

The local business community has been supportive to her since launching the bakery in January, Baker said.

In particular, officials with the Moriah Chamber of Commerce have encouraged her work. To amplify their support, chamber members organized the event last week to rally the bakery as it ramps up for the busy summer season.

BakerÕ s business, which is located in a cozy two-story structure building on Plank Road, specializes in custom cakes. A quaint sign hanging over the porch welcomes visitors. Inside the shop, they are treated to pleasant aromas and sights including fresh donuts, cinnamon rolls and breakfast sandwiches. Since opening earlier this year, BakerÕ s expanded the menu to include salads, soups, stews and pasta dishes.

Baker said she has managed to create and deliver cakes to just about every sort of occasion over the years from Ò weddings to birthdays to funerals.Ó After a period of time learning and mastering different recipes from within her home, Baker said her family and friends convinced her to open a shop. The name for her bakery seems to make as much sense as an old homemade recipe. All she did was add a Ò yÓ on the end of her last name, and wa-la, she arrived at Ò BakerÓ y.

Baker made a handful of improvements to the space before opening it and transitioning from amateur to professional bakery operator. Ò It just took off,Ó said Baker, who noted it wasnÕ t actually that much of a physical leap to open the shop since her family’s residence is on the second floor.

Although she said the warming ceremony was a nice gift, Baker said her membership in the chamber was driven primarily by a desire to give back and connect with others.

Moriah chamber leader Catherine Sprague said in addition to holding ribbon cuttings the group focuses on organizing volunteers to pull off the logistics for events like Champ Day and Labor Day festivities.

Former Essex County DA Garcia throws hat in ring for Supreme Court One of four candidates seeking Fourth District judgeship PORT HENRY Ñ The Former District Attorney of Essex County has put her hat back into the political ring, announcing a run for state Supreme Court.

Julie Garcia, who served as DA in Essex County between 2006 and 2010, has announced her candidacy for one of two Supreme Court justice positions that are up for election in the Fourth Judicial District. Ò ItÕ s nice to have lived and worked around the district,Ó she said. Ò I have a lot of experience with different kinds of cases.Ó Garcia, a Moriah native who ran under both the Republican and Democratic lines as DA, will seek the Fourth District seat as a Democrat.

She has received several endorsements early in her candidacy, the most recent coming from the Warren County Democratic Committee, who also endorsed Mark Blanchfield, a Schenectady City Court judge.

Along with Warren County, Garcia has also earned the blessing of Democratic committees in Essex, Washington and Saratoga counties, and is seeking endorsements in the districtÕ s other counties.

Announced Republican candidates include Warren County Attorney Martin Auffredou and Mary Farley, a court attorney in St. Lawrence County for retiring Justice David Demarest.

Garcia, who currently lives in Lake George and works for the Glens Falls law firm Stanclift Ludemann Silvestri & McMorris with a law office in Port Henry, previously practiced law in Westport after her time as District Attorney.

She won the 2005 District Attorney race, earning the Republican Party endorsement over then incumbent Ron Briggs. She lost a bid for re-election in 2009 on the Democratic line after falling in the Republican primary to eventual winner and current Essex County DA Kristie Sprague.

A graduate of Albany Law School, she also worked as an assistant district attorney in Suffolk and Rensselaer counties before becoming Essex County district attorney.

Garcia stated she believes her wide-rang-

ing experiences as a prosecutor and defense lawyer handling civil cases in numerous counties in the district has prepared her for a run for Supreme Court, and is pleased with the response her candidacy has gotten so far.

As part of her time as Essex County DA, Garcia started the BEST Task Force to reduce drinking and driving and underage drinking by not pleading down drivingwhile-intoxicated cases to the lesser charge of driving while ability impaired, when the offenderÕ s blood-alcohol content is higher than .10.

Through that, the county saw a huge jump in DWI convictions from last in 2006 to 41st in 2008, comparable to other North Country counties, with case loads ranging between 148 (2006) to 191 (2008).

The NYS Supreme CourtÕ s Fourth Judicial District covers 11 counties ranging from the Capital region the North Country, including St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Hamilton, Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Fulton, Montgomery and Schenectady counties.

A New York State Supreme Court justices serves a 14-year term with a $174,000 salary.

Theories, intrigue hangs over Owls Head as authorities tighten net

pete@denpubs.com OWLS HEAD Ñ ItÕ s become a familiar routine: A resident noticed something amiss, picked up the phone and called in a tip.

At the other end, an official disconnected the line and mobilized the troops.

Soon, helicopters whirred overhead as search beams cut through the clouds and caravans of official vehicles skulked through previously sedate communities.

Now, in this remote pocket of the northern Adirondacks, armed officials man the fields and roads, shotguns and semiautomatic weapons pointed skyward.

Officials confirmed Monday that DNA matching the two killers who escaped from a maximum security prison more than two weeks ago was found in a cabin in Mountain View, about 25 miles west of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

Investigators believed the men had been there within the previous 48 hours.

And they believe the net is tightening.

At the Trailside Restaurant and Bar on Route 27, where the nightÕ s special was chicken wings for 60 cents a pop, residents took pulls from Budweisers, shot pool and discussed the manhunt that has now been dropped onto their doorsteps.

Owls Head is a place where not much happens, say residents.

Not many folks live here year-round, said Paula Follett, a seasonal resident from Brushton.

ItÕ s mostly seasonal homes and camps, a remote place with patchy cell service where you go to get away from it all.

And trees. Ò ItÕ s the type of woods that people donÕ t go in,Ó said Follett.

The ongoing manhunt, involving some 1,000 law enforcement officials, was sparked when a seasonal resident noticed something amiss at his cabin on Wolf Pond Road.

Robocalls went out on Sunday evening warning residents to lock their doors and stay inside.

Follett and her folks have a cabin in town, too, not far from the road that residents describe as perfect for a getaway Ñ rough, even unpaved in parts, and untended with plenty of places to hide.

Franklin County houses several correctional facilities and many officers have camps in the Owls Head area, including the Folletts and Mike Curtin, who lives on Ragged Road, the epicenter of the search, about four miles from the cabin where the inmatesÕ items were discovered.

Like other retired corrections officers interviewed for this story, Curtin hoped the two escapees, Richard Matt and David Sweat, would be captured alive Ñ or at least one of them.

The last eastern cougar A

ccording to a Proposed Rule document recently issued by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the known status of the eastern puma within its historical range is extinct. The agencyÕ s decision to declare the eastern puma, (aka panther, catamount, painter, mountain lion, cougar and ghost cat) extinct was based on the best available scientific and commercial data.

As a result of this determination, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes to remove the subspecies from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.

The Service summarized the decision by explaining, Ò Eastern pumas historically were considered generally common and widespread; however, by the late 1800s, eastern pumas were believed to be extirpated from most of their rangeÉ the majority of the most recent confirmed reports (of Eastern cougar) date from the mid-1800s to around 1930. Although there have been many hunters to claim they killed the last mountain lion in the East, there is very little definitive evidence.” The last known wild cougar killed in New York state was taken in1894.

Later reports are thought to be indicative of dispersers of western pumas, as in Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Connecticut or released animals, as in Newfoundland.Ó Despite a determination of extinction, the US Fish&Wildlife Service declaration goes on to state, Ò There now appears to be adequate habitat and prey for pumas in various portions of the subspecies’ historical range.” At first glance, it may appear the agency was doing a bit of backtracking on their decision, however the document continued to note, Ò Under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes to remove this subspecies from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. This proposed action, based on a thorough review of all available information, indicates there is no evidence of the existence of either an

Curtin recalled the complexity of the escape, which saw the pair cutting through the steel wall at the back of their cells before scaling a catwalk and burrowing through a brick wall before crawling through a steam pipe, where they snaked their way to freedom, exiting through a manhole cover.

Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie has said the operation may have been in the works for months, if not years. Ò I really want to know how all this came about,Ó said Curtin.

Only one arrest has been made in connection with the escape Ñ Joyce Mitchell, a prison seamstress who is being accused of providing the inmates with a hacksaw and a chisel, among other tools, to aid their escape Ñ while another prison staffer, Gene Palmer, was placed on administrative leave last week.

Curtin was skeptical to cast the light towards a fellow officer: Palmer, whose attorney did not respond for comment for this story, worked as an inmate escort, ferrying inmates, including the escapees, to and from their work detail.

ThereÕ s no doubt any cougars in the Ô dacks are transients, such as the one from South Dakota that traveled over 1,500 miles to establish a winter den near Lake George, before being killed on a highway in Connecticut back in 2003.

Guess declined to elaborate on the nature of the manhunt, which has mobilized the most law enforcement officials yet, only to say authorities were pursuing an Ò aggressiveÓ lead.

Outside, official vehicles continued to pour into Owls Head; DOCCS guards methodologically examined trunks and the halogen spotlights burned brighter as darkness fell.

Follett said more tips from their neighbors were sure to follow as schools dismissed their students for the summer and families began to trickle back to the area.

In windows throughout the countryside, televisions flickered with evening news reports.

On Titus Mountain, the command post, choppers circled.

The hunt continued.

Due to an obvious lack of female Ô moosesÕ in the region, Big Richard was often discovered looking for love in all the wrong places, typically in a cow pasture.He was widely recognized as the first moose to return to the region after more than a century of extirpation. Eventually he discovered a few mates and their kin survived to create an estimated herd of 500 resident moose in the region.

I often wonder if the Ô Connecticut cougarÕ had the potential to be a long tailed version of Big Richard, if he hadnÕ t died on a road near Greenwich. Despite the U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceÕ s recent determination to remove the eastern puma subspecies from protections provided by the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife; the agency will accept comments received or postmarked on or before Aug. 17, 2015.

Predators such as mountain lions and wolves were of particular interest, as they often provided hunters with much needed funds in the way of bounties.

F.U.B.U. golf tourney accepting entries

TICONDEROGA Ñ Universal Pre-Kindergarten Registration and screening for incoming Ticonderoga Elementary School Universal Pre-Kindergarten students will take place Monday, June 29 and June 30.

Prekindergarten classes will run five days per week, either mornings or afternoons, with breakfasts and lunches provided. Children who turn four on or before Tuesday, Dec. 1, may attend pre-kindergarten in September 2015.

Families in the school district who have children of prekindergarten age and who wish to have them enrolled in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program are asked to contact the elementary school office at 585-7400, ext. 2210.

Putnam Board to hold meeting

TICONDEROGA Ñ Entries are still being accepted for the sixth annual Ò For US By Us,Ó Golf Tournament at Ticonderoga Country Club, Rte 9N, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. F.U.B.U. is the premiere Ticonderoga tournament and is the only event by the club for its own course improvements. All proceeds are used for the golf course, safety and clubhouse enhancements.

The dayÕ s events will begin with a free cook-out lunch for players, provided by EmeraldÕ s Restaurant, and is staged on the patio overlooking the golf course. Following golf, players will be treated to gourmet appetizers during a brief program when prizes will be awarded. Each player will receive a special gift bag upon registering that will include a commemorative golf shirt, golf supplies and other items. The $100 per person entry fee includes golf, cart, food and gifts.

TICONDEROGA Ñ Ticonderoga will be holding its summer youth recreation program will be held Monday, July 13, and will run for five (5) weeks when it ends Friday, Aug. 14. The program includes breakfast and lunch each day as well as trips to the scenic Ticonderoga Beach. Children who will be entering Kindergarten through age 13 can attend for up to five days a week, from 7:45 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The cost for the program is $10 per day.

Scholarships will be available to income eligible families. These scholarships are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information call the Town Clerk’s office at 585-6677. Ticonderoga will be an Open Site which means that all children age 18 and under can come to the cafeteria at the Elementary-Middle School and receive a free breakfast and/or a free lunch. Transportation to and from the site is not provided.

Champ Days activities announced

PORT HENRY Ñ Champ Day, Moriah Stock, and the Lake Champlain Antique and Classic Boat rendezvous will be held Sunday, July 19 at the Port Henry Marina. There will be cardboard boat races at the Port Henry beach. Craft and food vendors will be setting up in the Power House Park, which is located near the DEC boat launch at 10 a.m. The LCACB boats will be arriving between 10 and 11:30 a.m. Bands will start playing on the pier at 1 p.m. Plan on a day filled with entertainment.

Ti alumni golf tourney planned

TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga Country Club will host the 15th annual Ticonderoga Alumni Association Golf Tournament Saturday, July 25, with an shotgun start at 8 a.m.

This tournament is open to the public.

There will be a Ò longest drive contestÕ and other numerous opportunities to win prizes. Donuts and coffee will be available prior to the tournament and hot dogs will be available on the course. Lunch will follow at Emeralds Restaurant.
