TICONDEROGA Ñ The Best Fourth in the North will honor those who have served their country in 2015. The committee overseeing the annual events, scheduled from July 1 until Independence Day, July 4, will honor veterans as the grand marshals. “In staying with the theme of Ô Salute To VeteransÕ the committee has decided to honor all Veterans in 2015,” Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matthew Courtright said. “A float with a number of veterans will lead the parade. The Ticonderoga American Legion and VFW as well as the committee member are organizing the float.” The float, as part of the annual Best Fourth in the North parade, will step off Saturday, July 4, at 2 p.m., making its way down Montcalm Avenue past throngs of cheering revelers. The parade will line up starting near Brannock Properties/Town of Ticonderoga Highway Garage. The bandstand for the parade will be located next to the Rathbun Jewelers building. Prizes and certificates will be awarded for floats in the following categories: Most Patriotic and Most Creative (Theme Related). Chairperson Debbie Barber thanked those who turned in nominations. N. Hudson event honors first woman 46er By Christopher Pratt christopher@denpubs.com

NORTH HUDSON Ñ Members of the Adirondack Mountain Club and town officials are among those planning to turn out in big numbers Saturday in North Hudson for a celebration to honor Grace Hudowalski, a noted mountain climber and longtime historian of the Adirondack 46ers. Last year the U.S. Board on Geographic Names signed off on a proposal to name a 4,012 foot summit after Hudowalski. The soaring peak, previously known as East Dix, is one of 46 within the Adiron-

dack Park that exceeds 4,000 feet in elevation. The full-day celebration on Saturday is a chance to take stock of the years of work that a local group put into getting the peak renamed. “It’s been a long time coming,” North Hudson supervisor Ron Moore said. “I think it’ll be a great day.” The schedule for the June 20 event includes demonstrations by outdoors groups, musical acts and a presentation honoring the winner of an annual contest honoring Hudowalski, who passed away in 2004. The event will also aid local community groups. Donations will be accepted to support the North

Hudson Fire Department and the Summit Stewards Program. The stewardship program is a partnership of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Its efforts focus on protection of the alpine ecosystem through education, trail work and research. Julia Goren, Summit Steward program coordinator, said her group functions with a “pretty limited income,” so any financial lift it gets from the event will be much appreciated. CONTINUED ON PAGE 15
