Teachers lauded on national TV Three Moriah instructors honored for excellence

MORIAH | Three Moriah Central School teachers found themselves interviewed on “Good Morning, America” recently and presented with a $10,000 check for school projects.

Teachers Tim McGarry, Linda Tabor and Dean Fleming were recognized on the program for being outstanding educators, along with six others from around the nation.

The ABC morning show was doing a National Teacher Appreciation Day segment, and former student Ashley Chappell and her mother, Sue Sadowski, nominated them.

“It was a contest by ABC where people could nominate teachers to go on air for their Teacher Appreciation Day segment,” Fleming said. “There were three schools that made it to the show along with us, one from Staten Island and one from New Jersey. Crayola gave each of the three schools a $10,000 donation for supplies.

PLATTSBURGH | As the state nears the end of a fouryear project to provide universal broadband access to all New York residents by the end of the year, a state senator is calling for a formal probe into how the Broadband Program Office (BPO) allocated $670 million in state and federal funding.

State Sen. Rob Ortt (R-North Tonawanda) on Wednesday formally called for the Senate Committee on Investigations and Government Operations to investigate the New NY Broadband Program, claiming the effort has fallen short of its goals.

Historic flag goes on display Fort Ti has the Royal Highland Emigrants flag

TICONDEROGA | The Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership recently awarded Fort Ticonderoga a grant to support the conservation of the camp colors of the Royal Highland Emigrants flag.

This grant, along with other donor support, allows Fort Ticonderoga to care for and display one of the rarest of Revolutionary War artifacts.

Only two British flags of this kind survive from the 18th

century and Fort Ticonderoga’s example is the only one in the United States, said Fort Ticonderoga Curator Matthew Keagle.

“Flags from the Revolutionary War are exceedingly rare,” said Keagle. “Records indicate that hundreds were shipped across the Atlantic each year during the Revolutionary War to British troops in North America, but very few survived. This particular flag in the Fort Ticonderoga collection was carried by the Royal Highland Emigrants, a regiment of British loyalists that served in Canada during the Revolutionary War.” The Royal Highland Emigrants Camp Color flag will be the highlight of a new exhibit, “1781: A War Not Yet Won,” located in the Mars Education Center, and will focus on the British operations and occupation of Ticonderoga in 1781.

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga area’s free income tax helpers have just finished another season.

The American Association of Retired Persons Foundation TaxAide program started in 1968 with four volunteers working at one site, helper Judy Walker said.

“This year, during the months of February through April, our local volunteer group filed 278 returns for residents throughout our area,” she said. “Most of the taxpayer clients came from Warren, Washington and Essex counties and were thrilled to have such a terrific service offered for free.”

She said about 35,000 volunteers serve taxpayers in 5,000 locations throughout the country. There is no fee or income restriction for preparing personal taxes and AARP membership is not required.

“Our area has benefited from this free tax preparation service for over 13 years,” Walker said. “A mighty team of local volunteers is led by Jan and Bob Whitaker. Jan is the Hague AARP TaxAide local coordinator and Bob is Hague AARP TaxAide Electronic Return originator.”

She said the Whitakers are joined by a volunteer staff of 18 from Ticonderoga and Hague.

“Each volunteer is trained and certified by the IRS annually, then they deliver services to Ticonderoga, Hague and Bolton Landing from February through mid-April,” Walker said. “Reservations for tax preparation are required and this big chore is

Students awarded at Business Day

Ti High School was represented at SUNY Adirondack

TICONDEROGA | Ticonderoga High School business Students were headed to SUNY Adirondack Business Day recently.

This year, Deborah Taylor, Ticonderoga business teacher,

took 22 students to the 25th-annual Adirondack Business Educators/SUNY Adirondack High School Business Day at SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury.

Three students brought home awards from the event.

Ticonderoga High School winners included: Cara Sanchez, 1st place in Business Economics; Sar Whitten, 2nd place in Business Economics; and Mya Delong, 2nd place in Accounting.

More than 300 students and 16 schools participated in various contests with this year’s theme, “Through the Years.”

Each student that attended had the opportunity to compete in two tests, Taylor said. First place winners this year re-

ceived a $250 scholarship. Gift cards and certificates were given to the top five in each contest.

A total of 17 contests were available for students to compete in.

Students also had the opportunity to meet and greet this year’s keynote speaker, business leader Ken Kurtz.

“Kurtz is a beverage industry executive who has been the driving force in building some of the most iconic premium beverage brands in the last 30 years,” Taylor said. “He has worked for E. & J. Gallo Winery, Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams), Fiji Water, and Bai Brands.” ■

Watchdog or guard dog?

The national media at one time in this nation’s history took great pride in being a watchdog for its

• PUBLISHER • Their mission was to protect and inform. Personal preferences were instinctively and professionally put aside, and their focus was watchdogging governmental affairs on behalf of the American people.

Nowadays, they seem to respond more like a guard dog who instead of guarding the property, responds more favorably to the diversionary story thrown to them by their party of choice.

A good watchdog needs to understand and value what they are on watch to protect, and nothing can supersede that task.

I saw a video recently of a young boy who had fallen off his bike and was knocked unconscious. Lying next to him was his pet dog. The dog was not a large nor imposing animal — just your average mongrel pet. The dog would not allow any passersby nor medical support staff get near the child.

While he never bit anyone, he was overly protective, snapping and barking until the child regained consciousness.

Despite the best intentions of those wishing to assist, the dog was laser-like in his single purpose, not wishing further harm to the child by keeping everyone at bay until the child let the dog know these people were there to help not hurt.

Instinctively, the dog understood his role. His love for the child overshadowed everything else. Nothing mattered more to the dog, not even its own life, than the task of watching over the injured child.

Sadly, both sides of our political system have manipulated the mainstream media, and it appears far too many in the media have lost focus on just who these are supposed to be protecting.

Like the guard dog that chooses the juicy red T-bone diversion, they see their mission is to only feast on the juicy scandals or successes of one party over the other while placing their selected preferences over those of the nation.

That process is a disservice to the nation and their profession as a whole.

Perhaps in the future, this period will be looked upon and studied in schools of journalism as training for how not to conduct oneself nor the craft of good reporting.

Diversity initiative much-needed Race is always been a third rail in American politics.

So let’s talk about it.

Amid the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks last month, the chain is engaged in deep soul-searching and will close over 8,000 stores for the day on May 29 to offer “racial-bias training” to employees.

The flap is just the latest incident in the ongoing tension roiling the country stemming from ham-handed (and sometimes fatal) attempts to discriminate against people going about their everyday business.

Despite being isolated, the North Country isn’t immune to national trends.

Earlier this winter, a SUNY Plattsburgh student posted a racist message on social media, leading to protests and policy changes at the college.

The fallout also led to pained community discussions in Keene, the hometown of the student who posted the message.

As the aftermath rippled across the region, people of color shared their own stories of discrimination and discomfort in the North Country, which is overwhelmingly white — up to 90 percent in some communities.

And at 43, the median age of Adirondack Park residents is eight years older than in the rest of the state, according to the 2014 Adirondack Park Regional Assessment.

The same report reveals the Adirondacks is on track to become the oldest region in

the entire country if current trends continue.

As the rest of the country becomes increasingly diverse, we have to question if this overall lack of diversity is putting us at a competitive disadvantage.

There are arguments both for and against the role of cultural diversity in promoting economic development.

By some metrics, diversity plays a key role in growth because areas friendly to different races, religions, cultures and lifestyles provide a fertile and welcome area to relocate.

Alternatively, one could argue areas that are already diverse tend to attract similar populations because they’re already rich cultural environments.

A new group called Adirondack Diversity Solutions aims to probe some of these questions.

The organization, which grew out of the similarly named Adirondack Diversity Initiative, is calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to require all state employees and contractors to complete racial bias and inclusion training.

They’ve also extended the invite to frontline tourism service professionals.

While we usually balk at pledges, we think this is a great idea and support these efforts.

Adirondack Diversity Solutions is correct when they acknowledge we tend to harbor unconscious biases whether we realize it or not.

But even if unintended, they could mean everything to a person of color or another nationality — a stray glance, an action, a look.

Essex deserves praise for storm relief efforts

To the Editor: I’d like to commend and thank all the good Samaritans in Essex who looked out for and assisted neighbors during the power outage weekend.

Special thanks go to Craig Jackson, fire chief, and his father Ron Jackson, town supervisor, for personally checking on many in the community to see if they needed assistance.

Their concern and outreach are greatly appreciated. Many thanks to them and all who helped others this past weekend.

Thurman super responds to lawyer termination

To the Editor: Town board meetings are supposed to be for conducting town business.

Thurman residents have expressed concern, disapproval and disgust over the 2018 Thurman Town Board meetings.

They have approached me with questions regarding what can be done about the inappropriate actions of a particular board member whose behavior is having a negative effect on the town.

They have also given suggestions and advice ranging from enforcing Roberts Rules of Order to removal of the board member from the meeting.

When New York state made the rules and laws for town boards, they assumed people in town government would be reasonable, rational people that have respect for themselves, others and their town.

Something else.

While perhaps benign, these signals could squash plans of those seeking to revisit, relocate or otherwise invest in the community.

This isn’t a matter of building some type of liberal utopia, but seeks to answer an existential question facing the Adirondacks.

Survival.

We need to attract people to maintain school enrollment and fill workforce gaps.

And we cannot do it without importing people.

Adirondack Diversity Solutions has also called for business owners and not-for-profits to follow the state’s potential example by “executing both a workplace climate survey, along with developing a diversity and inclusion strategic plan that outlines how their organization will expand the reach of its mission, broaden its talent pool and appeal to new markets and communities.”

On that, we disagree: While the intentions are good, it would ultimately act as an unfunded mandate on small businesses, as well as an unnecessary intrusion into the private sector.

However, that doesn’t mean that small businesses can’t benefit from these initiatives somehow.

Diversity is our nation’s biggest strength.

We should embrace it — especially here in the North Country.

For the time being, we (Thurman) have to live with what we’ve got. There is nothing that can be done to bring an out of control board member to order.

Town law also deals with voting.

Majority rules, period.

On a five-member board, three votes is a majority. In recent months, three Thurman Town Board members have made unwise decisions.

An example of one of their unsound decisions is the firing of the town attorney, appointed since 2009.

The attorney legally could not and morally would not fulfill the unethical demands of Councilwoman Gail Seaman. Therefore she, along with Needham and Ackley, fired him.

It is unfortunate, but it is their right to do so. For the time being, we have to live with whatever they decide.

It is a sad time for Thurman but we will get through it.

While the public health benefits of raising the purchase age are clear, it still has ramifications for those under 21 who already smoke.

Should this law take effect, there are a number of local organizations and agencies in Essex County with staff dedicated to providing tobacco cessation counseling, including Adirondack Health, Essex County Mental Health, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Mental Health Association of Essex County, St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Services, and UVM Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

If you or someone you know are among those who would be affected by this proposal, the North Country Health Heart Network wants you to know that there are programs and services to help you quit.

Last year, the Institute of Medicine estimated that raising the age to 21 would reduce the number of smokers nationwide by 12 percent. Research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 90 percent of smokers started before turning 19.

Grant advances BackPack Program Ticonderoga Kiwanis will continue helping needy kids

TICONDEROGA | The Kiwanis Club of Ticonderoga just got a $2,000 grant for its BackPack Program from Stewart’s Holiday Match Program.

The BackPack Program sends young children from local area schools home for the weekends throughout the school year with

backpacks filled with nutritious, shelf-stable and easily prepared foods.

“Thanks to the help of generous donors and organizations like Stewart’s, the program has been able to expand from this relatively modest start,” BackPack Chair John Bartlett said. “The first expansion was in April 2013, and it was enabled by an earlier grant from Stewart’s.

We’re extremely grateful for Stewart’s continuing support of our efforts to help local kids.”

Through its Holiday Match Program, Stewart’s Shops matches customer donations made in all of their shops from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

The backpacks also include Stewart’s Milk Cards good for one gallon of 1 percent milk

Bartlett said all donations are used to purchase the food to fill the backpacks and donations are tax-deductible.

Ti police arrest alleged fake inspector

TICONDEROGA | On May 5, police arrested Danee Jo Haran for displaying a forged certificate of inspection; a misdemeanor offense.

Haran was issued an appearance ticket to appear in Ticonderoga Town Court at a later date. ■

Brown is being charged with felony 2nd-degree burglary; felony 3rd-degreee criminal mischief; and the misdemeanors of endangering the welfare of a child, 3rd-degree attempted assault, and criminal obstruction of breathing/ blood circulation.

Brown will be arraigned at the Ticonderoga Town Court.

The case was handled by several members of the Ticonderoga Police Department. ■

Woman arrested for DWI

TICONDEROGA | Steaming from a burglary that occurred on March 25 at 67 Montcalm St., Ticonderoga Police took Vincent E. Brown Jr., 33, into custody.

TICONDEROGA | On Saturday May 12, Michelle lapoint-Stanley was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Lapoint-Stanley was issued appearance tickets and will appear in the Ticonderoga Town Court at a later date.

Hague plans new docks

HAGUE | A public information meeting on expanding the Hague public boat docks is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 at the Hague Community Center.

The proposal is to build new public docks at Steamboat Landing, 1,300 feet south of the Hague Town Park. The cost estimate is $89,000, with a grant for $38,000 obtained so far from the state Department of State.

The work would be done by October.

Statues project near first goal Ticonderoga will get a life-size Lord Howe statue.

TICONDEROGA | Walk into History is an endeavor to place life-size wooden sculptures in and around Bicentennial Park in Ticonderoga.

Coordinator Roberta Whiteley said they’ve been raising funds for the statues and are getting close to their goal for the first one.

“We are progressing nicely with this project, currently holding a fundraising effort that will enable us to have the first statue in place by this summer,” she said.

Lord Howe is the figure selected to be highly visible and within approachable access to all, she said.

“We are currently working with the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership to bring the wooden sculptures to our town,”

The non-profit Ti’coustics gives all donations to community organizations to assist with projects for town improvement.

“This historic, artistic endeavor has been started by Ti’coustics, a totally volunteer amateur musical effort that has been entertaining many on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, year round for about five years,” she said. ■

As for the shearing off of the fire-damaged second story and weather sealing of the first, that could happen quickly, he said.

“They can take down the bulk in three or four days,” he said.

The first floor has smoke and water damage and will need repairs, he said.

The fire aftermath’s sidewalk closure has held up replacement of sidewalks on the east side of Main Street near the fire scene.

Adirondack Concrete was awarded the contract for $92,550, with another $10,000 committed for new street trees and ornate street light posts. The money is coming from a state Department of Transportation grant.

Three utility poles will be taken out, wires buried, and three lamp posts put in.

Chamber President Renee Anderson they’ve received a Cultural Assistance Program (CAP) grant through the Essex County Arts Council for $450 to show summer movies for kids.

She said they plan to contract with Suzie Sadowski, who shows films behind her snack bar in Crown Point, to present two movies.

“We can rent it from her,” Anderson said. “They’ll be shown at the Port Henry Beach.”

The first will be Aug. 12 and the other on a date to be announced. ■

Work continues around the state and the full $500 million commitment has not yet been disbursed. But all funds have been committed to projects after the final round of grant awards, which amounted to $225.5 million statewide.

In addition to the probe request, Ortt has introduced legislation that would require yearly financial reports from the BPO documenting how any new funding is spent.

This legislation would be retroactive, requiring a detailed report on what and where the initial $670 million was used.

“The program has yet to meet its goal of connecting every New Yorker and it lacks the safeguards of detailed reporting, which would allow us to hold the (BPO) responsible for the initiative’s current status,” said Ortt. “The public has the right to know how and where their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent, and in the interest of accountability and transparency, this legislation would help do that.”

The bill has been advanced to the Senate Finance Committee, where Ortt hopes the legislation will be voted on and moved to the floor in time to be passed before the end of the session in June.

More than half of the locations in the third and final round of grant awards announced

by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Plattsburgh in January will be served by satellite.

Hughes Network Systems, a Germantown, Maryland-based provider, received $15.4 million in state subsidies from the state Broadband Program Office (BPO) to offer service to nearly 76,000 addresses, including much of Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.

But Ortt believes satellite service doesn’t constitute coverage, and those who will actually receive broadband won’t receive it until 2020.

The lawmaker also criticized the governor for taking what he said were premature victory laps across the state.

“If you’ve been listening to the governor, you’d believe this program has been a massive success,” Ortt wrote in a letter to Sen. Terrence Murphy, the committee’s chairman. “Perhaps he’s misinformed — or perhaps he’s out of touch with upstate New York — but through conversations with countless constituents, telecommunications experts and local officials, one thing has become clear: this ‘mission accomplished’ attitude couldn’t be more wrong.”

Memorial Day parade slated for May 28 Crown Point preparing 150th annual celebration

CROWN POINT | The 150th Crown Point Memorial Day Commemoration will honor those veterans who have fallen.

The parade theme at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 28 this year is “Crown Point’s Honor Roll,” honoring men and women from Crown Point who have given their lives in service to their country.

“This year marks the 150th year Crown Point has held events,” said celebration coordinator Jody Gibbs. “We would love for everyone to join us for the annual parade. The judges’ booth is located near the Crown Point Citgo station, on a private residence lawn.”

For the 150th year, some new events were added, Gibbs said.

“This year we are holding a monster truck display in the park on Sunday,” she said. “We will also have three live bands on the main stage between Sunday and Monday.”

CROWN POINT | Vendors are being sought for the First Congregational Church of Crown Point’s 13th-annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 24 from noon to 4 p.m.

in the Crown Point Town Park.

The festival attracts patrons from across the Champlain Valley and includes food booths, live music, and the Classic Car Show with up to 50 vehicles, the Rev. David Hirtle said.

There is no charge for the vendors, although they should call 518-2164055 to reserve a space.

Vendors should bring their own tables and tents as needed.

The live music this year includes Loose Connections and Nancy bands, plus local talent.

There will be the

church’s famous strawberry shortcakes made with local berries, strawberry ice cream sundaes, burgers, Peggy’s famous michigan sauce hot dogs, and onions and peppers sausage sandwiches.

Bridgepoint Communications will provide wi-fi throughout the park during the event.

“For the past 13 years, the First Congregational Church of Crown Point, with its 35-plus members, have ambitiously organized, set-up and staffed a Strawberry Festival,” Hirtle said. “The proceeds have been used to support our historic buildings, as well as provide funds for our outreach programs in our community.” ■

Mock crash brings lessons

PORT HENRY | Members of the junior and senior class at Moriah Central School got a firsthand look at what poor decision making can lead to on the roadways.

The school, in coordination with local fire departments, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague (among others) held a mock accident at the entranceway to the school May 10, two days before prom.

Students watched as responders rushed to pull accident victims from cars. They watched as the driver of one car (Sebastain Sprouse) was arrested and when a passenger (Ju-

liette Baker) was taken from the car she was riding in and placed into a hearse.

“We want to educate young drivers on the importance of making good decisions when driving,” said Trooper James D’Ambro, an outreach coordinator with the state police.

Val Mildon, who coordinated the program on behalf of the school, said she was emotional when the first responders started showing up at the scene of the mock accident.

“This makes it real life,” Mildon said. “We hope this may give them a little scare and realize the dangers that are out there.”

Following the accident scene, students returned into the school for an assembly, which included the arraignment of the person responsible for the accident.

Students participating in the mock accident included Sprouse, Baker, Jon Gibbs, Harmony LaFountain, Somer Scorsome and Sarah Anderson. ■

New Schroon Lake leader arrives Schroon Chamber of Commerce hires executive director

SCHROON LAKE | A woman who has called Schroon Lake her second home for more than 20 years has been appointed as executive director of the Schroon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Susan Palisano assumed the new role at the end of April, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors said.

She replaces Tammy Whitty-Brown, who left due to health concerns.

Palisano said she considers it an honor and a privilege to serve as Chamber of Commerce executive director.

“I have loved this town since the very first summer we vacationed here so many years ago,” Palisano said. “We’re excited about making the transition from part-time to full-time residents.”

Dedicated antiquers, the couple also buys and restores vintage clocks, and collects far too many other things, according to their children.

Palisano volunteers for a dog rescue organization, and she and her husband have two rescue pups of their own, Rocky and Al. ■

Eagle Lake woman cleans up Tonya Condon takes a broom to Route 74

EAGLE LAKE | Ticonderoga native Tonya Whitford Condon recently finished her 19thannual spring cleaning of the stretch of Route 74 that winds its way along the shores of Eagle Lake.

Condon said she collects up to 200 pounds of trash each spring as a member of Eagle Lake Property Owners Inc Her rounds cover both sides of the road and add up to a five-mile slog that takes her two full days to complete. She also does spot cleanups during the summer, and usually another major sweep in the fall.

Eagle Lake Property Owners adopted its part of Route 74 as part of the New York State Department of Transportation’s official Adopt-a-Highway program that was established back in 1990.

Condon took over as coordinator in 1999, and has conducted the program ever since.

Condon says that she sticks with this volunteer effort because she feels a strong sense of community ownership of the roadway, and a sense of pride in its appearance.

Lions plan charity event Schroon Lake Garage Sale is holiday weekend

SCHROON LAKE | The Schroon Lake Lions Club is holding its annual Memorial Day weekend indoor Garage Sale and Charitable Gift Raffle on May 26 and Sunday, May 27.

The two-day event is at the Schroon Lake Boathouse from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

“The club is in desperate need of donations and is soliciting the Adirondack community for new and used items (in good condition), along with donations from local restaurants and service businesses,” said club member Glen Repko. “This event could not be conducted without the generous support of residents and local businesses.”

Torch Run helps Special Olympics Workers from Moriah Shock Facility run to Port Henry

MINEVILLE | Employees at the Moriah Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Mineville will run to help raise money for the Special Olympics program.

The annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run starts at10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23 with runners from the state shock camp racing 7 miles from the prison in Mineville to Moriah Central School, then on to downtown Port Henry.

A pair of students, Todd and Dakota Cutting, will join the runners at Moriah Central School and run around the school, as fellow students and staff cheer everyone on.

The course will end at Mountain Lakes Services Helen McDonald Day Treatment Center, where the crew will be joined by more local Special Olympics athletes who are preparing for the games.

Christina Slattery McDonough, who works at the Shock Facility, has been involved with the Torch Run since 2001.

“They bring out the staff and athletes at the finish,” she said. “We do this to raise more money for the athletes who participate in the Special Olympics. It’s worked out great.”

The route for the run will start at the Moriah Shock Camp and head to Fisher Hill Road, then Plank Road, Broad Street to the school, then into Port Henry, where it will end at the Day Treatment Center behind Mac’s Market at about 11:30 a.m. ■

NORTH HUDSON | Linda Anauo,71, of North Hudson passed away Friday, May 11, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Witherbee on Dec. 10, 1946, the daughter of Napoleon and Doris (Budwick) Marcotte.

She married her lifelong love of 53 years, Franklin, in Moriah. Linda and Frank always enjoyed their 3 a.m. cup of coffee together before Frank went off to work.

For those who knew Linda, knew family came first. She welcomed everyone with arms wide open and she also wasn’t afraid to tell it how it was. She spent several years as a volunteer for High Peaks Hospice. She worked at Frontier Town along with several of the local gas stations, where she would spend hours sharing stories with the community. She loved to play bingo and would try to win a couple million on scratch offs. There was never a dull moment when Linda was around. Her beauty, love and strength will live on through the many lives she touched.

She is predeceased by her husband Franklin, brother Bobby, sister Mary and grandson Joshua.

Linda is survived by sister Doris Fiore and husband Glen of Blue Ridge; brother Napoleon Marcotte and wife Judy of Port Henry; daughter Jamie Lang and husband Randy of Ticonderoga; daughter Tracey Whitty and husband David of Schroon Lake; sons James and Franklin Anauo of North Hudson; grandchildren Ashley, Amanda, Melinda, Casey, Dylan, Luke, Cole, Owen, and Maddison and great-grandchildren Thomas and Austin.

The family will celebrate the life of Linda in the comfort of her home in North Hudson.

ELIZABETHTOWN | The Essex County Board of Supervisors honored a pair of residents who volunteer their time as part of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Stephen Thompson of Ticonderoga and Joan De Cesare of Keene were named volunteers of the year by the state Office for the Aging during Older Americans Month. The duo will be honored at a Senior Day event in Albany later this month.

Essex County Office for the Aging Director Krissy Leerkes presented the two names to the board on Monday, which unanimously moved a motion in their honor.

“Stephen is a volunteer for our transportation program,” Leerkes said. “Every day of the week, Stephen and his wife Betty are on the road, transporting older adults to and from medical appointments.”

In 2017, Thompson drove 11,211 miles to help others, and so far in 2018 has logged 5,306 miles.

“Joan was a member of our office and now assists the staff in the Office for the Aging with clerical work,” Leerkes added of De Cesare. “She also has her own caseload of clients she contacts monthly to provide telephone reassurance.”

Leerkes said De Cesare had made many lasting friendships through their efforts, especially with older adults who may tend to be socially isolated. ■

TICONDEROGA | Mildred Elizabeth Bain, 88, of Ticonderoga, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the University of Vermont Medical Center of Burling-

ton, Vermont.

Born in Putnam Station on July 10, 1929, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (O’Connor) Bain.

Mildred was a lifelong resident of Putnam Station and Ticonderoga. She was a waitress and restaurant owner with a great work ethic. She was the owner of the former School House Restaurant on Streetroad in Ticonderoga for 20 years.

Millie was devoted to working and helping to support her family from a very young age.

Her greatest enjoyment was her family. She especially treasured hosting a monumental Christmas celebration every year with her entire family together.

She was predeceased by one son, Joel Hamel.

She is survived by four children, Rene O. Hamel (Patricia) of Putnam Station, Annette Dedrick (Robert) of Ticonderoga, Paul R. Hamel (Betty) of Ticonderoga, and Pamela

TICONDEROGA | Lawrence “Larry” E. Trudeau, 80, of Ticonderoga, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Elizabethtown

Community Hospital.

Born in Ticonderoga, Feb. 11, 1938, he was the son of the late Edward and Jessie (Horton) Trudeau.

Mr. Trudeau was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was a lifelong resident of Ticonderoga and was employed as a Large Equipment Operator for the Village of Ticonderoga Highway Department for many years.

Larry was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks #1494 of Ticonderoga and served on the Ticonderoga 4th of July Committee. He was an avid bowler and loved outdoor sports, especially fishing and hunting.

Larry was a dedicated Ticonderoga Sentinel fan, and enthusiastically attended their basketball, baseball, and football games, home and around the North Country.

He was predeceased by his son, Lawrence Trudeau, Jr., his step-daughter, Tina Signor; his brother-in-law, Ronald Clarke; and his sister-in-law, Lisa Trudeau.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Louise E. (Crossman) Trudeau; four stepchildren, Earl Woodard of Pennsylvania, Daniel Woodard of Vermont, Mark Woodard of Vermont and Kevin Signor and his wife, Beth of Ticonderoga; seven siblings, Darlene Hurlburt (David) of Ticonderoga, Richard Trudeau (Margueritte) of Clemons; Barbara Macey (Tony) of Ticonderoga, Edward Trudeau (Beverly) of Ticonderoga, Catherine Clarke of Crown Point, Bernie Trudeau of Ticonderoga, and Warren Trudeau (Cynthia) of Ticonderoga. He is also survived by two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends called Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 210 The Portage, Ticonderoga.

Interment with military honors will take place at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga.
