PORT HENRY — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that caused considerable damage to the Dollar General on Main Street Tuesday night. Employees were cashing out shortly after closing on Tuesday when they smelled smoke. “They ran out of the building and called 911,” said Essex County Emergency Services Coordinator Don Jaquish. The call came in at 10:20 p.m. Jaquish said the two employees quickly determined the fire was “beyond their ability to control.” Authorities had the conflagration largely extinguished before midnight. But the night continued to be punctuated by the sound of breaking glass as firefighters smashed windows to extinguish minor flare-ups as Main Street was lit up with flashing lights all the way up the hill and beyond. Port Henry Deputy Mayor Matthew Brassard described the fire as, “a horrible loss to the village and town of Moriah.” “The Dollar General was one of the best things to come into this town,” Brassard said. “It allows many people a place to >> See FIRE | pg. 22

TICONDEROGA — When you are operating a runaway truck, the safety of others may be the last thing on your mind. However, that appears to not to be the case as a 33-year-old operator working out of Porters Corners made a decision that is being lauded by local emergency responders. According to Ticonderoga Police Chief Mark Johns, Grover Dake, Jr., who works for his father at Grover Dake Trucking, was driving a 1995 Western State rig heading east-

bound on Route 74 around 7:45 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, May 5, as he reached the top of Chilson Hill carrying a load of logs. As he started down the sharp embankment, Dake was unable to downshift, a maneuver to slow down the engine in order to slow down the rig. “At this point, he started coasting down the hill because he was not able to get the truck back into gear,” Johns said. “He tried to rely on his brakes, but they heated to the point they became ineffective.” Witnesses said Dake was doing his best to alert traffic ahead of him, using his air horn as much as he could and flashing his lights to let people know he was out of control. Fortunately, drivers were able to get out of the way >> See ACCIDENT | pg. 12
