Stan Burdick remembered By Keith Lobdell

TICONDEROGA — Stanley “Stan” Burdick had two goals in his last days: make it to his 60th wedding anniversary to wife Cathie and reach the milestone age of 90. While the first happened last summer, Burdick reached the second March 2 of this year before passing away Friday, April 22.

in Hague. “His joy, faith and enthusiasm for life shined through in so many ways. He had such a positive, upbeat way about him — just a great person to be around.” Burdick worked for 17 years with the YMCA in Cranston, Rhode Island, Middletown, Conn., Hamilton and Sandusky, Ohio. Stan and Cathie were married in the Silver Bay Chapel in 1955. They retired to a cottage at Silver Bay in 1991.

Accomplished caller

In remembering the Ticonderoga fixture, one word kept coming back to the mind of Bruce Tamlyn — Joy. “Throughout his life, Stan has left joy and laughter and humor in the lives of literally hundreds of thousands of people,” said Tamlyn, the Chaplain at Silver Bay YMCA

Burdick had been a staple in the local community throughout his time in the Ticonderoga area, starting as a square dance caller for events at Silver Bay in Hague, were he called dances for 40 years. “He was a world-class square dance caller,” Tamlyn said.

Sidewalk replacement eyed as part of Crown Point water project

Harrington: Funding needed for both sides of Main Street sidewalk replacement By Mikaela Foster

CROWN POINT — Town officials hope to have the second phase of the multi-phase water project completed by the end of summer, said the town’s supervisor. This year’s phase, which is slated to begin in June, will focus on the stretch extending to Station Street and Ferry Road. Supervisor Charles Harrington hopes sidewalks on both sides of the street will be replaced. While the sidewalks that will be dug up as part of the project to replace aging water lines will receive funding for their replacement, those on the other side remain in limbo. Property owners and store owners have been doing a lot of work dressing up Main Street, Harrington said.

Harrington said the April 7 water committee meeting left unanswered questions. “There are questions about where the money will come from for those sidewalks,” he said. “But we’re working through that in a competent and thorough manner.” Harrington said the town is exploring all funding options. The supervisor hailed the cooperation between the agencies. “We work very thoroughly with the department of health, our engineers, and with the Essex County planning office because this is all new to us and they have areas of expertise that will make sure this project will be successful,” Harrington said. Harrington said he is anticipates the funding issues will be finalized in June. The first phase was completed last summer, which involved work on the first section of the Main Street water line, which dates back to 1898. A third phase of the project, involving well heads, will tentatively be tackled next year, said the supervisor.

According to the square dancing Facebook community page site SPIN CHAIN Spoofs, Burdick had called dances in all 50 states, all 10 Canadian Provinces and 20 countries abroad, as well as served as a lecturer at 56 national square dance conventions. He was awarded the Silver Spur Award in 1979, the Milestone Award in 1992 and the Heritage Award in 1993 from different square dance associations. “He was such a huge inspiration to me when I was a young caller and cartoonist because Stan was also a cartoonist and was the first guy to pay me for my cartoons American square dance magazine,” said SPIN CHAIN pagemaster Cory Benjamin Geishauser in a post. The magazine, American Squaredance Magazine, was published and edited by the Burdick’s for 23 years. In the heyday of club >> See STAN | pg. 13
