TICONDEROGA — Students from Ticonderoga Central got competitive with their shopping strategies during their fifth annual shopping spree to benefit the Ticonderoga Food Pantry, April 18. In a throwback to the television show “Supermarket Sweep,” 23 middle school and high schoolers split into eight teams. They grabbed their grocery carts and headed off into

the Walmart grocery aisles with the same mission: Buy as much food as possible in an hour. Grab a good variety. And stick to the budget. Each team was allotted $125, for a total $1,000 grocery bill. John Bartlett, chairman of the promotions committee for the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, the co-sponsoring agency, said the event not only benefits the food pantry, but it teaches the students how to shop and work within a budget. Social studies teacher Jay Wells said this year’s group of students were particularly competitive, as they put their heads together and shopped with strategy: Quick, affordable, complete.

Colvin Chapman, senior, and his teammates said they kept a calculator handy while they shopped and didn’t go for bulk items. They went for the most variety that “people would feel comfortable eating at a meal,” he said. Checkout was the most exciting part of the event, Wells said as the students headed towards the registers. As the number goes up and up, “everyone gets nervous,” he said. “Last year, the winners were within two cents.” This year, all teams came in under the $125 budget, but no one hit the mark exactly. A team of middle school students won, spending $123.82. The group cited pre-planning as their strategy. SCHROON — Bow ready. Aim. Bullseye. The Schroon Lake Central School Archery Team is having a shoot-off benefit to raise money for the team’s trip to nationals. This event, slated for next weekend, is slated to be fun for the entire family, said Mike Sharp, the team’s archery coach. Participation is open to fourth graders and up. There will be three different types of target scoring, including a chance to shoot at 3-D animals, including bears and deer. Expert hunters are also encouraged to test their skills at “instinctive” shooting, or shooting without the use of sights. “I challenge all hunters to come and shoot a perfect score... and beat me,” said Uriah Fogle, a SLCS student. Sharp said he hopes to see a lot of hunters take on this challenge. Pre-registration is encouraged as soon as possible by emailing Terry Wisser at tbwiz@hotmail.com, but walk-ins are welcome. There will be three flight times on May 6 at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. May 7 flight times are 9, 10 and 11 a.m. Sharp said show up an hour before the flight time in order to attend the NASP safety clinic. >> See SCHROON | pg. 20
