CROWN POINT — Friends of Crown Point State Historic Site was awarded a $7,212 state grant earlier this month to install a monument that will add Crown Point to the Knox Cannon Trail, correcting a 1929 omission that incorrectly left the town off the network. Friends President Jeff Kauffman said the group was encouraged and the funds would help complete the story of the trail, which they say will illustrate the importance of the town’s contributions to the region. Michael Roets, site manager of Crown Point State Historic Site, said the quest for the monument began in 2013 by the New York Daughters of the American Revolution when they contributed $2,000 to use for this historic marker.

ELIZABETHTOWN — They’re a familiar presence on county roadways: Medical cabs. Unlike the shining, brightly-colored fleets found in metropolitan areas, this group is a discordant bunch: Dark-colored Crown Victorias. Minivans with tinted windows. Scuffed sedans, many with signage that isn’t always clear. Business is booming for the Medicaid transport biz. The use of private cabs to transport Medicaid patients to medical appointments has skyrocketed in Essex County in the past-decade. How much? Local costs have increased 535 percent since 2012, from $393,059 to $2.5 million last year, when Essex County taxpayers chipped in an average of $208,068 per month — for 378 people. Essex County Transportation Director Nancy Dougal is alarmed. Her report to the Essex County Board of Supervisors last week galvanized lawmakers into questioning if the red-hot biz should be regulated. The boom, which has largely stayed out of the headlines, comes amidst changes in how the state provides Medicaid transport. Essex County once facilitated patient transfers to medical appointments in conjunction with the department of social services and other partner agencies. But in July 2012, the state centralized the service, funneling all ride requests to Medical Answering Services (MAS), a Syracuse-based dispatch center. “Frankly, that’s when the cost exploded,” County Manager Dan Palmer said. “If you look at the numbers, the transportation cost has gone way up in 2012 on a statewide basis.”

HISTORY In 1775, Gen. George Washington arrived in Boston, taking command of the army. There he met and developed a friendship with Col. Henry Knox, an expert on colonial artillery. Knox suggested to Washington that 59 cannons captured by American forces at Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga be brought to Boston. Using barges, bateaux and oxen-driven >> See CROWN POINT | pg. 24

SCHROON — Members of the Schroon Lake Drama Club will share a few of their favorite songs when they present The Sound of Music Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2. The production, which includes many of the songs made popular from the 1965 movie/ musical which featured the trials and travails

of the Von Trapp family, gave the drama club a chance to expand their casting call. “The production traditionally has been for students in grades 7-12, but this year we decided to open the roles of the children up to elementary school students,” co-director Wendy Sargent said. “We always wanted to do this show this year, and when we finally decided, we started to think about what to do for the roles of the children.” “It has been great having the younger kids here,” said Anita Massiello, also a co-director. “As the vocal music teacher, I was able to pick out students who had stood out in music

class. They lighten up the rehearsals and the show and they are all very talented.” Elementary students included in the production are Emily Thompson (kindergarten - understudy), Adison LeClair (first - Gretyl Von Trapp), Emily Roskidany (first - Marta Von Trapp), Luc Stout (third - Kurt Von Trapp shared role), Hannah Thompson (third - Brigitta Von Trapp shared role) and Lillianan Hurtado (third - Brigitta Von Trapp shared role). Along with the directors, members of the cast said they have enjoyed having the young>> See MUSICAL | pg. 16
