PORT HENRY Ñ Members of the Village Board of Trustees are looking into making repairs on the sidewalks within the municipalities limits. The discussions were part of a budget workshop session as part of the board’s Feb. 20 morning meeting. Ò I would like to go out for bond on a sidewalk project,” trustee Matt Brassard said. Ò We have $13,000 budgeted and I think we should go to the bank and ask them what we could get with that as an annual payment.” Members of the board discussed various areas that could use repair, or even additions, but focussed most of their attention to high traffic areas. Ò We have Church Street and Broad Street, which are the high traffic areas that need to be done,Ó trustee Ruth McDonough said. Ò To start, we have to do what is crucial in the spaces where we are walking all of the time,” Mayor Ernie Guerin said. Ò We need to make a wish list and prioritize which sidewalks need to be done first,” trustee Staley Rich said. Guerin added there could be more to be done in the future. Ò I think we should look at from the liquor store to the boat launch, on both sides of the road,” Guerin said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

SCHROON Ñ Tourists takeover this popular summertime destination between May and September, but as the ice covers the lake, the locals come out to reclaim what is theirs: the fish. The Schroon Lake Annual Ice Fishing Derby will be held on March 7 and 8 with tickets costing $15 each. Registration will take place March 6, from noon to 9 p.m. at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club. The thought of hauling in a salmon, lake trout, perch, pickerel or pike is what drags local anglers

out of their warm cozy homes and onto the ice. These fishermen gather at local derbies throughout the ice fishing season to show of their skills. The derby attracted more than 600 anglers last year and is an opportune time to socialize and reel in a great catch. The club offers first, second, and third place prizes for northern pike, lake trout and salmon, and gives out first place prizes for pickerel and perch. Tracy Hanchett, wife of Drew Hanchett who is head of the derby committee, described the event as all kinds of fun. “The whole thing is great,” said Hanchett. “The

club hosts a dinner on Saturday night, and people are in and out constantly as we weigh in fish.” Kevin Hart, a 67-year-old Hague native, who has been ice fishing for 60 years, enjoys ice fishing to simply spend the day outdoors and enjoy the local scenery the surrounding area provides. Hart can still recall his favorite days out on the Lake George before the perch limit was 50. Hart, who previously was a fishing guide on Lake George, offers his expertise and advice to first-time anglers. CONTINUED ON PAGE 18
