Soldier surprises brothers at schools

TICONDEROGA — Military deployments can be an emotional rollercoaster for service members and their families. At the beginning, people can hurdle down the track into anger, fear and longing. But each email, phone call or care package can sail them into hope and joy because they’re one step closer to being together again. Homecomings can be a fireworks display of love and excitement. Some families make banners, redecorate their homes or plan welcome parties to surprise their service members and surround them with love. But sometimes service members do the surprising. Army Pvt. First Class Tyler Tucker did just that. He surprised his two younger brothers Feb. 4, by picking them up from school after returning home from his 15-month deployment to Korea. Tucker said he and his brothers are very close and kept in touch throughout his deployment. But despite the emails and phone calls, they all felt the difference of not being together in person. >> Story Continued | pg. 10
POTTERSVILLE — Olympic snowboarder Andy Finch was “shredding the gnar” with campers at the Word of Life Snowcamp in late January. The winter camp for teens in grades 7-12 offers activities like snowboarding, snow-mobiling, snowshoeing, ice tubing and ice hockey. These activities are coupled with guest speakers, biblical teaching and an opportunity for individuals to grow in their faith. Tommy Sewall, the incoming director of Teen Camps with Word of Life, said the purpose of Snowcamp is to break down emotional walls in the teenagers who attend the camp in order to build up their lives and share the Gospel with them. Sewall said he brings in well-known athletes to the camp because an athlete at Word of Life summer camp influenced him when he was younger and he sees the impact athletes can have on teens. He said he looks for athletes who are good role models, love the Lord and will let the campers interact with them on a personal level. Sewall first invited Finch to Snow>> Story Continued | pg. 19
Chili Cook Off cancelled SCHROON — Due to circumstances beyond the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce’s control, they have cancelled the fifth annual Chili Cook Off scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13. The Chili Cook Off is an annual event that raises funds to help support the Schroon Lake EMS. Executive Director, Tammy Whitty-
Brown will be working with the Schroon Lake EMS in the near future to either schedule the Chili Cook Off for a later date in the year, or to develop a new signature event to help raise funds for the squad.
