MORIAH Ñ On Jan. 8, State Police arrested 33-year-old Shawn M. LaValley of Moriah for the accidental shooting of 83-year-old Joseph R. Rodriguez of Mineville, which occurred Dec. 1. Ò The reason the investigation took some time is because we needed to speak with the victim and he was in the hospital for an extended period of time until he was released and home recovering,Ó said Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman. Rodriguez was shot in the abdomen with a 12-gauge deer slug while hunting in an area off Bartlett Pond Road in Moriah. Rodriguez was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Plattsburgh where he underwent surgery. He has since been released from the hospital is currently still recovering from his injuries at his residence. LaValley, who Fleishman reported was released on bail after being remanded to the Essex County Jail, was compliant with officers’ requests throughout the investigation. Ò I just want to stress that [LaValley] was cooperative throughout the investigation, from what investigators who handled the case told me,Ó CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

Angel of Hope dedicated in Port Henry By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com
PORT HENRY Ñ ItÕ s not the completion of a goal, but may be perhaps one of the biggest steps in the realization of what the family of the late Brian Carpenter have been working towards since his death in August of 2005. Luci Carpenter and family unveiled the Angel of Hope behind the Moriah Town Hall in Port Henry on Christmas Eve, the centerpiece of what she hopes will
be a location where people can come to contemplate and remember those they have lost. Ò Tom, myself and other family members have been working for at least four years for this day,Ó Carpenter said. Ò To see people coming together to get the supplies and donations to get us to this point has meant the world to us. Everybody is somebodies child, and to have a place to come and remember, sit and be quiet in a non-cemetery setting can be very soothing.Ó The Dec. 24 event was small in scope, but profound
for the family. Ò We had about 10 to 15 people show up - it was very small and informal,Ó Carpenter said. Ò This shows the project has moved forward and made significant progress. We wanted to have it open and let people know it is there and be able to go up to it.Ó At the unveiling, Carpenter gave a heart-felt dedication to the statue, which was inspired by the Richard Paul Evans novel, The Christmas Box.
