Moriah boys seek triple crown By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PORT HENRY | The Moriah varsity baseball team hopes to end the 2017-18 season with the same result they had in football and basketball: A Section VII championship. “That is what we are striving for,” said coach Casey Nephew. “There are going to be some good teams in Class D this year, our goal is to be one of them.” Nephew said the Vikings return seven starters from last season’s team, including pitchers, which should help with depth and experience. The main issue facing the Vikings has been preseason practice time, as several members of the team also played for the state finalist basketball team. “The players have been working hard to get ready for April 9,” Nephew said about getting ready for the scheduled opener. Dyllon Bougor, Jay Strieble and Zach Baker will be important players on the mound. “With the experience these three got last year, we are optimistic that our pitching will improve,” Nephew said. “Defensively, we will

need a good year from Baker, Matt Pelkey, Connor Anderson and Jerin Sargent. If they play well, we will be strong up the middle.” On offense, Nephew will rely on Bougor, Anderson, Jay Strieble and Sargent to be catalysts. Other returning players include Chris Heald, Jacob Gibeau, Derek Manfred, DJ Taylor, Jon Gonzalez and Austin Drake. Newcomers include Ron Ward, Anthony Scalzo, Pat MacDougal, Sebastian Sprouse and Jeff Strieble. ■

SENTINELS

Sentinels seek experience, title By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

TICONDEROGA | The Sentinel varsity baseball team will look to repeat their Section VII/Class C championship run from a year ago. However, coach Dan Dorsett said the team is going to have to work hard throughout the season and gain some experience to accomplish their goals.

Michael DuShane

Graney and Jevyn Granger to help lead the younger players through adversity. Members of the Sentinel roster include seniors Jevyn Granger, Brenden Lauzon, Riley Manso, and Evan Graney; juniors Jack Grinnell, Austin Barnao, Nick Robarge-Grenne, Carson Reeves, Russell Gallo III, Michael DuShane, Tony Martucci and Bryce Gautreau; and sophomores Conall Tierney, Dillon Schlogl, Terrence Benedict, Steven Barnaby and Carter Dedrick. Dorsett is assisted by Rick McClintock. ■

“This years team has a lot of depth at various positions, but we lack experience at key spots,” Dorsett said. “Our new players need to adapt to varsity and learn the system. Our pitching needs to be sharp to start the season so we can continue to improve throughout the year.” The Sentinels were the last team standing for Section VII in the 2016-21017 sports season, making it to the regional finals in the Class C playoffs. Dorsett said he will look for leadership from fourth year seniors Evan

Lady Sentinels to rely on the bats

being the only one with varsity experience. “Saidi St. Andrews will take over as catcher and be an important bat in the lineup,” Mullen said. “Nichole Tucker (Third Base), Alyssa Tucker (Outfield/Infield) and Grace Montville (Outfield) all had part-time roles last year and will have an opportunity to try and land a starting role this season.” Mullen said early-season games and tournaments will be an important part of the season as they seek to form chemistry among the players. “In order to be successful, we need to play solid defense behind our pitchers, hit consistently and capitalize on opportunities when they are presented,” he said. The roster also includes senior Aubrey Smith and Kacey Fish, along with juniors Brittany LaFountain, Savannah LaCourse, Hannah Riper, Lauren Dixon and Karyssa Alkinburgh. ■

TICONDEROGA | While the Ticonderoga varsity softball team returns only a lone starter from the sectional championship team of one year ago, coach Eric Mullen believes they will have what it takes at the plate to remain in the hunt for capturing yet another title. “Hitting will be our core strength this season, and something we will need to rely on, more so than previous years,” Mullen said. “The only returning starter is Emily Pike (a CVAC Division II all-star last season) who will be relied upon at first base and at the heart of the order.” In the circle, Mullen will look for innings from Jessica Bruce, Chloe Rocque and Emily Purkey, with Bruce

Lady Sentinels seek strong performances By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

TICONDEROGA | The Lady Sentinel varsity track and field team will not have the numbers they might desire in 2018, but do bring a number of athletes back who have competed at the state level. “With only six girls returning from last years team our strength will be based on how the newcomers develop,” coach Walter Thorne said.

Thorne said the low numbers will make it difficult to compete in events like distance, sprints, jumps and throws. Returning for the Sentinels are a trio of state qualifiers in Meg McDonald, Sierra Stacey and Madison Flora. The Lady Sentinel roster includes Omni Bazon, Lillian Bain, Ruby Bennett, Kyler Huestis, Avery Kidder, Kiela Jordan, Lizzie Rich, Meagan Shaw, Kirsten Strum, Meg McDonald, Madison Flora, Corey Kidder Eryn Kidder and Sierra Stacy. ■

TICONDEROGA | The Sentinel varsity boy’s track and field team will bring back a good number of athletes to compete within the league and section for 2018. “We will be returning 10 athletes, of which three are seniors and juniors who should provide leadership for our sophomores and freshmen, especially our throwers,” coach Walter Thorne said. “Hopefully our newcomers will develop quickly and provide help where needed.” Thorne said the one area of weakness for the team will be a lack of depth on the sprints and distance events.

EKMW athletes look to build form to compete By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

WESTPORT | The combined track team known as the Emus is bringing athletes from throughout Moriah, Westport, ElizabethtownLewis and Keene together to improve their running skills not only for the track and field season, but for other sports they compete in.

“Our strength is that we have a lot of soccer and basketball players who came out for track to improve their endurance, coordination and speed,” coach Luis Garnica said. “Early in the season, we have been working on running form. Having the correct running form helps you run faster while using less energy. That can pay huge dividends in the fourth quarter or second half.”

Garnica said the skills athletes are learning can help them when it comes to the other two sports seasons. “Developing solid starting skills helps build explosiveness,” he said. “That can add inches to your vertical, help with acceleration off the line and acceleration while running. You’ll reach top speed sooner – hopefully sooner than your competition.”

Garnica said the team is looking for athletes to run hurdles and participate in field events. “We are simply trying to improve our speed and endurance each week while running with our friends,” Garnica said. ■

PORT HENRY | The Moriah golf team will have a mix of sectional experience and new golfers as they take to the course this season. “This season will be a little bit of a rebuilding year with three seniors on last years team graduating in Kyle Wilson, Brandon Hammond and Nick Rotella,” coach Lynn Galm said. “Four out of the six top golfers that have competed in matches return this season with seniors Joey Stahl and Ryan Munson, junior Alex Larrow, and eighth graders Thomas Clarke and Dawson Anderson returns also with match experience.” Eighth grade newcomers Caleb Harris and Blake Fuller and seventh grader Bryce Sprague will all be in contention for filling in the sixth position, according to Galm. “Last years team record was 9-1 and we finished second in sectionals and regular season behind Lake Placid, Galm said. “The team will be striving to be just as successful this year if not better as Joey will be striving to qualify for states for a fourth year in a row and will be a competitor for medalist honors at sectionals (was the 2016 sectional champ).” ■

LAKE GEORGE | Armed with talent and experience, the Warriors baseball team may make history this year. The team’s roster not only features nine veteran seniors, but it includes four athletes — senior Alex Jones and Nick Hoffis, plus juniors Connor Vidnansky and Mike Johnson — who were members of the basketball team that just recently won the 2018 New York State Class C championship. Coach Erik Hoover said winning the state title not only

gave the four multi-sport players with vital experience but it provided the rest of the baseball team with inspiration — and confidence that they can indeed achieve their highest goals. “Those four players gained a wealth of experience at that high level of competition — and it gives all the players the confidence that they can handle the intense pressure they must face throughout an undefeated season, when the team has a target on their back,” he said. Coming off an 11-5 season, the 2018 baseball team has a deep, experienced pitching staff — including senior Tony Abrantes and junior Michael Johnson — bolstered with the addition of freshman Sean Butkowski, who shows remarkable promise, Hoover said. “We’re predicting he’s going to make his name known locally in baseball,” he said noting that Butkowski will also be playing first and third base. The team’s leading hitters include seniors Jack Kelleher — who’s pursuing baseball at St. John Fisher College this fall, plus classmates Clay Moody and Richie Hansen, as well as Jones, Hoffis and Vidnansky. Hoover said his team is characterized by intense focus, knowledge of baseball strategy and will to win, besides confidence “Mentality is our team’s huge strength this year,” he said. These guys know the sport. There’s a lot of dimensions to baseball-- They know the game we have.” Hoover said with nine athletes on the team knowing they are playing their final year of high school baseball, they’ll be highly motivated to make the season memorable — by winning a sectional championship then competing in the state tournament. “We’re all aiming to play at Joe Bruno stadium in late May, and hopefully then we’ll be going down to Binghamton for the states,” he said. ■

NEWCOMB | Coach Matt Winslow enters his final season at Minerva/Newcomb hoping a couple breaks will go the way of he and the members of the Mountaineer varsity baseball program. “I lost some keys players to graduation (Caleb Winter, Aiden LaCourse) which was most of my pitching staff, but I’m am hoping that Kaleb Davie and Shane Hill can throw well this year,” Winslow said. “I am hoping that my best hitter from last year, Adrien Comeau, can get some medical

issues squared away so he can participate this year. If he can’t I will be playing with nine this year, which is a weakness in itself.” While low in numbers, the Mountaineers return eight players from last season along with three new players in Mason Allen, Zachary Phelps and Alex Damasevitz. “Our goal is to be competitive this year and hopefully that will result in some wins for us,” said Winslow. Members of the Mountaineer roster include seniors Shane Hill and Jay Goodspeed; juniors Adrien Comeau, Peter O’Donnell, Andrew Sanders and Kaleb Davie; and sophomores Mason Allen, Zachary Phillips, Alex Damasevitz and Ethan Armstrong. ■

JAGUARS Returning players, new coach for Lady Jags By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

NORTH CREEK | A strong core of returning juniors and seniors will be joined by a new-to-them face on the bench for the Johnsburg varsity softball team this season. Coach Bruce McGinn makes the jump from the Minerva/Newcomb program to the Jaguars, where he expects the team to be one of the top three seeds heading into the playoffs. “We have a good core group of returning players,” McGinn said. “They will be

key to the season along with a very strong group of new girls.” McGinn said the team is anxiously awaiting clear fields on which to start their outdoors training and season, and are focused on reaching their goals on the diamond. Members of the roster include seniors Taylor Dwyer and Megan Bacon; juniors Khaleah Cleveland, Cara LaBounty, Ryan Riedinger, Courtney Cavanaugh and Mallory Persons; sophomore Shae Riedinger; and freshmen Aileen Stevens, Jennie Allen, Phoebe Glover and June McCarthy. ■

NORTH CREEK | The Johnsburg varsity baseball team will look to a core of pitchers to get through the 2018 season. “We will have to depend on our pitching staff to shine this season,” said coach Andrew Snide. “We will have three returning pitchers from last year’s team which will see majority of the time on the mound. We also have four new pitchers that look decent in the first couple weeks of practice.”

With that, Snide said the goal will be to limit the errors behind the pitching staff. “We have a very young and inexperienced team and our practices have been focused on being mentally prepared for every pitch,” Snide said. “If we can limit our errors throughout the season, we should be able to play with any team in our league.” The Jaguar roster includes seniors Logan McKinney, Caleb Buck and Dawson West; junior Will Fayhey; sophomores Bill Cameron and Ayden Amell; and freshmen Ryan Morris, Anthony Galle, Jaxon Roblee and Shawn Mulligan. ■

BOLTON LANDING/SCHROON| For the past two baseball seasons, the Bolton/Schroon Lake varsity baseball program has been at the top of the Mountain and Valley Southern division standings. This season, with only three starters having been lost to graduation, the team looks to continue to build upon their success and capture a third straight division title in hopes of a Section VII/Class D playoff run. The team expects to return sophomore pitcher Andrew Pelkey, who was named the Co-MVP of the Southern Division after beating Johnsburg twice in the fi nal weeks of the season to give the Bolton/Schroon team the division title, along with advancing them in sectional play. Overall, Pelkey went 4-1 in his fi rst varsity year on the mound. Experience, growth key for Wildcats on the court By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SCHROON | Entering their third season in CVAC tennis, the Schroon Lake Wildcats are finding their stride toward the top of the standings, as well as developing depth for upcoming years. “The boy’s and girl’s squads have several returning players from the past season who are excited about the game of tennis,” said coach Terry Wisser. “The boy’s squad are led by senior Ben Wisser and junior Gabe Gratto, who will be key to helping the boy’s squad develop the key components of how to play the game. “The Maisonville sisters, Emily and Anna, along with Megan Wilson will lead the girl’s squad,” Wisser continued. “Their leadership and experience on the court will be great examples to inspire the younger players for the future at Schroon Lake Central tennis program.” While there is plenty of experience, there are also a large

number of new players heading into the season. “Roughly two-thirds of the team is trying the sport for the first time and looking to have a great season playing a sport and having fun in the process,” Wisser said. “The seniors, along with a few other players, are gearing up to make a name for themselves in match play and looking towards the sectional rounds in May.” Wisser said the girl’s team will fill out all three singles spots and two doubles teams, while the boy’s team is looking for players to round out a second doubles team. The boy’s roster includes seniors Ben Wisser and Joe Slaterpryce; juniors Gabe Gratto, James Joseph and Jake Brady; and seventh grader Christian Gratto. The girl’s roster includes seniors Emily Maisonville, Megan Wilson, Megan Charbenoue, Carol Latorre and Amanda Grey; juniors Alysen Bruce, Ryelynn Clifford and Abigail Joseph; freshmen Anna Maisonville and Jackie Thompson; eighth grader Shelbie Rice and seventh grader Lauren Peace. ■

Young Cougar team will focus on pitching, fundamentals CHESTERTOWN | After posting an overall winning season in 2017, the North Warren varsity baseball team will be looking to rebuild after losing four seniors to graduation. CHESTERTOWN | After finishing with a 2-7 record in the 2017 season, there seems to be a lot of room for improvement for the North Warren Lady Cougars varsity softball team. However, head coach Shannon Phelps said there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the 2108 season. “This team works together well and the players have strong softball skills,” Phelps said. “We have good speed, great ball contact at the plate and great pitching. We are expecting a great season.” That’s a positive outlook considering the Lady Cougars lost seven seniors to graduation in 2017. However, Phelps is returning five varsity players including some veteran players on the pitching roster. “Some returning standout players will be Olivia Viele

Bartlett is returning following a knee injury last season. Phelps said there is a lot of skill in the field, as well, with Eliza Brown expected to scoop up anything hit in the outfield. Alyssa Kramar, also a veteran player, will to do the same in the infield and outfield. Phelps also believes the Lady Cougars will be able to put the ball in play this season. “We expect strong bats by Chloe Jones and Jaclyn Urtz. Mattelyn Beadnell will help the team on first as well as other positions and has a great eye for the ball,” Phelps said. According to Phelps, the Lady Cougars have the skills, but it will be the mental attitude that will help them win games. ■

Dibble is expecting them to communicate and give direction before, during and after all situations on the field and to serve as examples for the younger players. “With only three seniors, we have a younger team and are looking to keep building into our upcoming years. Other than playing smart baseball, Dibble said there are two keys to winning this season - good, controlled pitching and solid hitting. “Winning is going to come down to which team can throw consistent strikes and who can put the ball into play the most,” he said.

“We are expecting a great performance from Dylan Baker on the mound and Joe Phelps behind the plate,” head coach Jeffrey Dibble said. “Both will have solid at bats. Riley May and Wyatt Gereau will offer speed in the field and on base running.” Dibble said the Cougars have been working hard on pitching and have been building up a large pitching roster. In addition to mastering the fundamentals, North Warren has been “focusing on playing smart baseball, being ready for all situations and making aggressive moves on the base paths.”

BURGHERS

Burgers’ veteran lineup spells success By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | Only four positions on the Burghers’ lineup will see personnel changes this year — and the returning athletes, armed with experience and talent, are likely to match or exceed last year’s winning record, one of the best in recent history. While three of those positions — catcher, second base and fielder — are covered with veteran players, the third, lead pitcher, will be filled by a recent junior varsity draftee.

But it’s no ordinary rookie that’s stepping onto the mound this year, it’s Sara Langworthy, a freshman who already proved her athleticism this winter in basketball. Doubtlessly, in softball she will be a standout athlete, as was her older sister, 2016 Warrensburg graduate Erin Langworthy. A multi-sport regional All-Star, Erin was a key hitter for the Burghers. Sara Langworthy or junior Mikayla Rothermel will likely be filling the role for sophomore Sophie Reed, who is sidelined due to a shoulder injury. As pitcher last year, Sophie led her team to considerable success, which achieved a 10-2 record in the Adirondack League — and that

featured winning the last three games of the 2017 regular season. The Burghers then beat Mayfield 7-6 in opening round of the Section II tournament, but lost in the quarterfinals to Lake George, ranked 9th in the state. Slated to replace standout 2017 senior athlete Starr Hughes as catcher will be sophomore Bella DeAmelia, who has gained plenty of experience behind the plate in off-season play. Most all of the 2017 strong sluggers will be returning this year, including Langworthy, junior Dianne Curtis, freshman Nayana DeAmelia, and junior Megan Hughes —

who made key hits in the Mayfield victory. Both the infield and outfield appear to be well-staffed this year. Coach Teresa Colvin notes that Nayana DeAmelia is a reliable defender at third base and Hughes will be providing talent and leadership in center field. “Fielding will absolutely key to our success,” Colvin said. Curtis returns to shortstop were she excelled last year, and Kayla Raymond, an accomplished athlete, returns to first base. “I have no concerns at all with our infield — it will be really solid,” Colvin said. “We’ll be having a very successful season.” ■

Burghers seek to surpass 2017’s achievements By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | On April 26 last year, the Warrensburg baseball team, plugging along with an unexceptional record, pulled off a stunning upset by beating Fort Ann, ranked No 1 in New York State. This victory over the Cardinals — a team that had only lost one other league game in eight years and went on to win the Class D state championship for their third time in eight years — grabbed headlines. The week after this historic Warrensburg-Fort Ann game, however, the Burghers lost to Fort Ann — providing the Forts with their first win of the year. The Burghers’ performance last year prompted new baseball coach Mike Perrone to voice a confident yet cautionary

GOOD LUCK BURGHERS! From Your Friends At Curtis Lumber

MacDuff ’s main role will be catcher, however — his second year in that position. On first base will be Smith and Olden, rotating off the mound, Perrone said. Junior Dan Kelly and senior Jacob Johnson will both be vying for the second base post. Wilson and Olden, who Perrone said are talented on defense, will be covering third base. John Kelly, an athletic senior, is the top choice for shortstop where he performed well in 2017. Seniors Cole Lanfear and Austin Smith as well as sophomore Travis Passage will take over the outfield positions. Fielding, Perrone said, needs improvement from last year. ■

outlook this week. “Obviously, when you beat a team like Fort Ann, you have to have real talent, and there’s no reason we can’t put together a really good team,” Perrone said. “But to have a successful season, we have to work on being consistent.” Perrone, who this year swapped the varsity-jayvee coaching posts with former varsity coach Rob Thomas, said this year’s lineup has a “good mix” of veterans and new players. The Burghers have a deep pitching staff — three accomplished veteran hurlers joined by a promising junior varsity draftee. Joining veteran pitchers senior Zach Smith and juniors Peyton Olden and Evan MacDuff is Chris Wilson, a junior who recently finished an outstanding wrestling season. Smith is a proven performer, Peyton is the pitcher who pulled off that historic victory over Fort Ann, and MacDuff won key games for his team last year.
