Editor, The Messenger: The Rockingham Free Public Library in Bellows Falls would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time, energy and expertise to help make the Library’s Banned Book Week an enormous success.

This year the Library’s exciting live exhibit on Main Street ("See Live Humans Read") facilitated lively discussion about what free speech means and its imperative value in our country and community. Asked why he chose to work at Our Place, Gowell said he wasn’t happy in his last job.

“I wanted a job I’d like.

I wanted to be proud of where I work and the people I work with,” he said.

When not in front of the stove, Gowell lives in Alstead, NH, with his wife Yancy and young son Grady. His hobbies include gardening, biking and foraging for wild mushrooms. He said patrons of Our Place can feel safe that he’d never introduce any wild mushrooms to his menu there.

Lunch is served at Our Place every weekday except Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the public is invited.

“Everybody is welcome to come in for a great meal,” said Shea.

Gowell comes to the job as a self-taught foodie who began as a dish washer and worked his way up, eventually taking over the kitchen.

His 15 years of experi-

ence include stints at two restaurants in Keene, 176 Main and 21 Roxbury.

He describes his cooking technique as “taking what I have and making it into something.”

Gowell’s “winging it” talent is handy at Our Place, whose menu is often based on donated items.

A recent lunch featured cabbage donated by a local gardener stuffed with a creamy, vegetablelaced risotto. Another day it was free-range steaks donated by Albert’s Organics in Brattleboro.

“We never know what’s going to come through the door,” said OP Director Susan Shea, “so it’s important our cook be flexible.”

Other recent offerings have included veggie burritos, lasagna, shepherd’s pie, herbencrusted pork loin and French bread pizza.

Although he himself is a vegetarian, Gowell says he cooks all kinds of

Kurn Hattin Hosts Conference BF Leads The Pack Submitted by Kim Fine Kevin Creeden engaged over 250 attendees on The Impact of Trauma on Attachment at Kurn Hattin’s Annual Conference on October 9.

Creeden, M.A., LMHC, is Director of Assessment and Research at the Whitney Academy in East Freetown, MA and has authored numerous articles and chapters on the behavioral difficulties of youth who have experienced trauma.

The audience all had positive remarks about the practicality of the conference. They commented on their heightened ability to identify behavioral issues that are often directly related to trauma and attachment problems in children and to better facilitate treatment planning and behavioral management.

Two Lebanon, NH School Psychologists, Mark Coates, and David Smith both commented on Creeden’s expertise.

“He’s really on top of his game,” said Coates.

“The Conference is excellent. His clinical examples nicely integrate with current brain research,” Smith added.

Jenny Lane, School Counselor in South Royalton, will use what she’s learned in her daily work. “The conference speaker is wonderful. He’s giving me a lot of ideas

about how to approach children in a more effective way.”

The Annual Conference also includes a luncheon, tour of the campus, and childcare related books for purchase and exhibits.

Rockingham Library Sponsors Bus Trip to Harry Potter Exhibit On Saturday, November 21 the Rockingham Library, with a bus provided by the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union, will be taking a large group to the Museum of Science in Boston to see Harry Potter: The Exhibition. The bus will leave Bellows Falls at 8 a.m. and will return around 9 p.m.

To join the tour stop by the Youth Department at the Rockingham Library and register before November 12.

The cost is $23 for ages 11 and under, and $25 for ages 12 and up. Payment is required with registration – and bring additional money to purchase lunch. Tickets are very limited, early registration is recommended.

There will be chaperones available for those 12 and older who will be attending without a guardian (please ask for special youth registration).

At the Museum of Science you can journey to Hogwarts

to explore filmmakers’ challenges and innovations. The exhibition will feature more than 200 authentic props and costumes from the Harry Potter films, displayed in settings inspired by the film sets — including the Great Hall, Hagrid’s Hut, and the Gryffindor common room.

You will be able to view film artifacts such as Harry’s glasses, the Marauder’s Map, and Hermione’s Yule Ball gown. Kids will also be able to pull a screeching Mandrake from its pot and try their hand at tossing a Quaffle.

To enhance the trip the library will also be holding special programs throughout October and into November with special moving screenings and book groups.

West River Tennis Readies To Re Open Story by Joe Milliken-Editor Photo by Rick Martin After starting out as second home owners in Jamaica, VT and then moving to the area permanently three years ago, Greg and Beata Hasaj recently purchased West River Tennis from long time owner Bob Cofer and family.

"Greg was a member of the tennis club and played there every week for the last two years, and was also taking part in USTA tournaments representing West River Tennis," Beata said in a recent interview.

"Our daughter Gabriela and son Maximo were also taking lessons at the club.

“Then last year, Greg started getting more involved through organizing group tennis lessons at the club for students at The Mountain School in Winhall, with the hope of not only creating more interest in the sport, but also to simply create another sports option for students.

"Then one day, all the club members received a notice from the Cofers that they would be closing West River Tennis," Beata added.

"We felt that closing the club would be a big loss

to the community, so we decided to take it over, renovate the facility and re-open it."

And the Hasaj's certainly have made a lot of wonderful improvements, including the renovation of new bathrooms, locker rooms and showers, a new gym and also improved equipment.

They have also added a new roof, entrance way and better handicap accessibility.

Currently we take it for granted flicking a switch and having light. For most of us, electricity is an affordable necessity.

Vermonters need to become educated about the energy options. Some big decisions are going to be made over the next couple of years in the legislature that will affect energy in Vermont.

Vermonters are interested in clean energy options. Right now, with the current energy mix being mainly hydro and nuclear, Vermont is one of the cleanest energy

consumers in the United States. This is something we should all be proud of.

I have worked in power generation for over 35 years, I understand that a good mix of energy sources is important. I also understand that wind and solar and efficiency can’t provide the needed base load power to the state. I also know that nuclear energy is a safe and reliable form of electricity.

Take time and educate yourselves on the options and then let your legislators know where you stand on relicensing Vermont Yankee.

Supporting Nuclear Energy as a Green Fuel Editor, the Messenger: With the realization of what coal and fossil fuels are doing to the environment, the US and the rest of the world need to find a way to slow down the production of greenhouse gases.

The governments of many countries throughout the world understand that nuclear technology is safe and reliable and are actively building new sites. The U.S. needs to step up and do the same.

It is surprising to some people that nuclear energy is green energy. There has been so much hype and distrust of this technology for decades. How can something so controversial, something millions have fought against be green?

Nuclear is one of the greenest options for base load power. The byproduct of generating electricity using nuclear technology is

steam and spent fuel. The spent fuel doesn’t have to be a byproduct. It can be recycled for reuse.

It is time for the U.S. to follow in the steps of many other countries and start building new nuclear generating plants and reprocessing spent fuel. It is time to clean up the environment.

I urge you to support nuclear energy. Support license renewal efforts, support building new nuclear sites and support reprocessing of spent fuel. It is in your best interest and the best interest of your family for many generations.

Take action and let your representatives and senators know that nuclear is the clean green option. Let them know that green can even be greener if the U.S. starts reprocessing spent fuel.

Sweetback Sisters Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor The Sweetback Sisters will be in concert at the Hooker-Dunham Theater at 139 Main Street in Brattleboro on Friday, October 23 at 8 p.m.

The Sweetback Sisters, though they may dress alike and sing harmonies as though they’ve been doing it all their lives, are not sisters. The Sweetback Sisters are Zara Bode, formerly of Rodeo Queen and Chuck Wagon Cookie on vocals, guitar, uke; Emily Miller, of Shadow Rider, on vocals, guitar, fiddle; a brilliant and talented Jesse Milnes, of Rosin Jaw, on acoustic guitar, baritone guitar, fiddle, and vocals; Ross Bellenoit, of Drag Rider, playing a terrific swing and country twinged Telecaster, baritone guitar, and vocals; drummer and vocalist Stefan Amidon formerly of Big Buckaroo; and finally Bridget Kearney, of The Night Herder, on upright bass.

They play a number of local venues, and many area music lovers were introduced to the band at this past summer ’s Roots on the River Festival in Rockingham, where the band was a big hit.

They bill themselves as Honky-Tonk for the Modern Day Cowboy and Girl, and they live up to the billing. They are best experienced live and in concert, where their quirky humor, remarkable vocals and instrumental ability, and yes, the whole honkytonk experience is given full opportunity to express itself.

Maria Muldaur at Bellows Falls Opera House

Submitted by Dorothy Read Vermont Festivals LLC will present an extraordinary CD release concert featuring the renowned 1970s icon Maria Muldaur and her Garden of Joy Jug Band on Saturday, November 14 at the Bellows Falls Opera House.

Muldaur’s decades of musical accomplishment is impressive, having recorded dozens of albums since the early 1970s, moving with ease from folk to rock to blues, and placing her unique imprint on all these genres through the decades.

“For almost 50 years, Maria has captivated audiences world-wide with her far ranging interpretations of all things musical,” Ray Massucco, Vermont Festivals producer, said. “Now she has come full circle with her Garden of Joy Jug Band.

This is going to be an upbeat, smile drenched, laughline making evening that can be enjoyed by all.”

Although on the popular cultural scene, Muldaur may be best known for her

hits “Midnight at the Oasis,” and “I’m a Woman,” she has produced a remarkable volume of work that few have achieved.

“Maria Muldaur has reinvented herself time and time again,” Massucco said. “She has a catalog of vocal recordings that is unmatched in depth, breadth and scope of styles and genres.”

She’s been called “America's First Lady of Roots Music,” and her performance will spotlight her returns to her own original roots – jug band music!

sent me dozens of CDs and tickets for Signature Sounds artists in performance – some of my favorites like Peter Mulvey, Richard Shindell, Chris Smither, Josh Ritter, Random Musings Amy Rigby, Erin on Popular Culture McKeown, Eilen Jewel, Crooked Still, Kris by Delmhorst and Jeffrey Robert F. Smith Foucault. We’d never met, just have written back – Editor and forth many times, as Signature Sounds artists I don’t get down to Keene, NH on a super regular basis, but did get down very frequently play up this way.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I last week and discovered a nice gem for the arts community down there – The thought The Starving Artist was Starving Artist Creative Collective, a probably a club or restaurant of some non-profit organization headquartered sort. Well, it does offer a few things to at 10 West Street, just where it comes eat and drink, but that’s about it. It’s more like attending a house concert, into The Square.

Halloween Party with GMP

Local band GMP, with Mark Grieco, Tim Morton and Jesse Peters, will play a Halloween party at McCliment's Pub in Putney on Halloween Night, October 31 from 9 p.m. until closing. There will be prizes throughout the night and a costume contest at the break. There is no cover charge.

The band plays a mix of covers and originals, the latter penned by Saxtons River native Peters. Playing in a stripped down trio format, GMP favors up-tempo, danceable tunes with a definite groove. The artists they cover include Los Lobos, The Police and Stevie Ray Vaughn, to name a few. Music & Art at Stone Church Arts On Sunday, November 1 at 2 p.m. there will be a Icons - Heaven on Earth, talk by Christine Hales at the Stone Church on Church Street in Bellows Falls.

Icons are paintings on wood panels which replicate the early painting style of the Byzantine period of art. They are fascinating in the depth and luminosity of color which is achieved by using egg tempera and gold leaf.

Hales will be speaking at the Chapel Gallery. She will give a demonstration of these ancient painting skills as well as a guided tour of the current exhibition of her icons. Come and see how icons are a way of bringing heaven to earth!

Greg Squared's Ansambl Mastika will be performing an evening of its original Balkan music for the Fall performing arts series at the Stone Church on Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m.

With song styles ranging from the

heart-wrenching clarinet 'miroloi' of northern Greece to the funkier chocheci of the Serbian and Macedonian Roma (gypsies); from the oriental mystery of Turkish and Middle Eastern chalgi ensembles to the driving power of Bulgarian wedding bands and Klezmer kapelye, Ansambl Mastika’s music is rooted in the myriad styles of Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East.

A Sound Review Joe’s take on New Music Review By Joe Milliken - Editor Aerosmith guitar legend Joe Perry returns with his fifth solo release (and first since 2005’s Joe Perry) with Have Guitar, Will Travel, which offers nine original tracks (plus one cover song) of mostly guitarsmoldering rock that takes its’ roots from Aerosmith per-say, but also infuses a variety of textures that are “all Joe.” Produced by Perry and recorded in just 47 days from his Boston home studio dubbed The Boneyard, Joe and friends recorded around the clock within a live band setting in order to capture a loose energy that bleeds from your speakers like a guitarpuffing freight train rattling through your living room.

The opening “We’ve Got A Long Way To Go” is a rock radio friendly anthem that introduces a new vocalist brought into the fold known simply as Hagen, a German club singer that Perry’s wife Billie happened to stumble across on Youtube, who certainly

has the vocal range and can certainly reach the high register.

Hagen also sings lead on two other tracks, including the ballad “Do You Wonder” (lyrics penned by Billie) and “Scare The Cat,”another up tempo rocker.

Perry takes over the lead vocals on the rest of the tracks, including a rollocking barroom cover of an old Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac song called “Somebody’s Gonna Get (Their Head kicked In Tonight)”, which really shows that Joe and his band are having fun.

“Heaven And Hell” is another down and dirty rocker complete with a Perry-distorted guitar intro and solo that blows the roof off the house.

“No Surprise” is a heavy, slinky song in which Joe pulls out his patented guitar talk-box gadget, which he’s made famous in Aerosmith’s live set over the years during “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion.”

The lone instrumental track (and what this reviewer was really waiting for) is called

“Wooden Ships”, which Perry dedicates to the late guitar legend Les Paul and simply pulls out all the stops and chops, shredding his way through multiple solos as bassist extraodinaire David Hull chugs along underneath the chaos.

“Oh Lord (21 Grams)” is inspired from Perry’s youthful, drug-induced past, demons which he fortunately left behind long ago.

“Freedom” closes out the set, complete with up-tempo rhythms and another blistering guitar solo in which Perry shows that despite all the rock and roll miles he’s logged over the years, he can still generate fresh ideas and an energy that is infectious to his hardcore fans.

Guest appearances come from the aforementioned bass player Hull, who worked with Perry during his original Joe Perry Project days of the early 1980’s and Beantown’s own Willie “Loco” Alexander.

Joe Perry proves once again that all he wants to do is have fun and let the music do the talking.

Third Annual Cabaret at Old Stone Church Get on down to the levee for the third annual cabaret at the Old Stone Church in Chester on October 23 and 24. Doors open at 7 p.m. for a glimpse of the more than 30 items in a silent auction and a chance to bid on these fine gifts donated by area businesses. The show starts at 7:30.

A Riverboat Cabaret is this year ’s theme with songs from the post Civil War era, the Gay Nineties, and the beginnings of the 20th century. Sam Lloyd

will be performing the sequel to “Albert and the Lion,” revealing the aftermath of Albert’s mother ’s conclusion about his disappearance at the zoo.

Cast members will sing and dance to the music of Stephen Foster and perform scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan.

Galilean Nights Astronomy Event in Chester On Friday, October 23 SoVerA is setting up telescopes and joining a worldwide star party, called Galilean Nights, to explore the night sky and to show it as Galileo saw it, at the Chester Public Pool parking lot on Lover's Lane in Chester from 7 to 10 p.m. weather and conditions permitting.

At least one of our telescopes will be set up to simulate what Galileo saw when he first looked at the night sky. Unless you have a telescope to set up, please try and park along the street and walk over to the parking lot.

We'll be conducting tours of the night sky, the Milky Way and specific objects like red giants, exploding stars, galaxies, Jupiter and its moons, and many other things that challenge even strong imaginations.

Gill Home Honored Ludlow Rotary’s Chili Cookoff A Big Success

The Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow was recently honored as one of Vermont's oldest Non-Profit organizations at the State House on September 23. The Gill Home was incorporated in 1896. Accepting the award for the Gill Home was Muriel Briggs, Chairman of the Board of Trustees since 1983. She was accompanied by a group of employees to cheer her on.

In August, the Museum celebrated their 40th Anniversary of the Blacksmith Shop site and the grand opening of the Perkins House, which was donated by MT Holly residents, Alice Bennett and Todd McCabe. On Cider Days on the Belmont Green, the Museum was well viewed by the public and local artists were recently featured along with artifacts of the home and community.

News From the LOV Women’s Club Holly Cloutier, the Black River High School HOBY student, was the guest speaker at the LOV Women's Club annual pot luck supper held at the club president’s house, Roxie Davis, on September 14.

Holly talked about her fantastic experience she had at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar held at Saint Michael 's college in Colchester last spring.

The seminar gives young people an opportunity to further develop their leadership potential and to enrich their understanding of our free enterprise system.

They do team building and hear from leaders in business, government, science, education and other leaders in the community through give and take workshops.

Holly said she was a little shy and didn't quite know what to make of things at the beginning of the weekend, but by the end, she made a lot of life time friends. She told about the HOBY hugs, HOBY cheers and the

spirit stick and some of the more educational things she got to learn.

She said she didn't get much sleep while she was there, but she didn't care because she was having so much fun. She came home with a lot more self esteem and would like to go back next year and help out as an ambassador.

Also in attendance that night was the state GFWC President Dee Beckman, and a former member, Nancy Sears, that was visiting from Florida. There were 15 members and four new potential members, they were, Barbara Calhoun, Brenda Clark, Mary Knight, and Linda Jelly.

While there they learned that it is very healthy to belong to a women's club, that you live longer, less likely to develop physical impairments as they age, and more likely to lead a more joyful life.

A study also showed that social ties and having friends reduce our risk of disease by lowering blood pressure,

heart rate and cholesterol. In fact, the results are so significant that not having close friends was as detrimental to your health as smoking or extra weight.

So come and join us at our next meeting. Visit our club and be happier, and more joyful.

Springfield Garden Club Receives New England Region Award

Submitted by the Springfield Garden Club For the very first time, a VT garden club has received the New England Region Nancy H. Atwell Trophy for Publicity.

Springfield Garden Club proudly accepted the trophy from the Vermont State President Stephanie Hockensmith on October 6, at the fall state meeting of the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont in Brandon.

Springfield Garden Club President, Anne Miller, who accepted the award stated that CT, MA, ME and RI clubs have received this award in the past, but neither NH nor VT had a plaque

on the trophy.

In an email to its’ club members, Miller expressed her deepest appreciation to SGC members Deanna Dexter and Marita Johnson for the articles, photography and submission of the application booklets done so well that the other clubs are asking for workshops "to teach them how we do it."

The Springfield Garden Club also appreciates the support of the local newspapers for their publication of press releases submitted and coverage by their reporters.

The SGC is gearing up for their annual fundraiser, the 17th

annual "Festival of Trees" which raises money for civic beautification and student scholarships in the fields of horticulture, forestry and environmental studies.

This will be at the Fullerton Inn in Chester on Friday, November 20 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Joyce G. Godin February 2, 1930 – October 10, 2009 Joyce G. Godin 79, died Saturday morning at the Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, VT. She was born February 2, 1930 in Montgomery Center, Vermont the daughter of Oscar and Elsie ( Donna ) Mayhew. She attended schools in Richford, VT. Joyce married Corad F. Godin on October 25, 1948 in Richford. He predeceased her on February 20, 1999.

She had made her home in Enosburg Falls and Richford for many years before moving to Claremont, NH and Springfield for several years then moving to Perkinsville in 1972 where she had made her home since.

Mrs. Godin was employed as a machinist at Whitney Blake in Bellows Falls, Vt. for over ten years.

She was a member of

St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield.

She enjoyed flowers and tending her flower gardens, she enjoyed baking and was known for her delicious pies.

She is survived by two daughters, Paulette Brochu of Hillsboro, N.H. and Carol Blodgett of Storm Lake, IA, one1 brother Leonard Mayhew of Claremont, NH, one sister, Phyllis Arnolds of Las Vegas, NV, four grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister Rita Boyer.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 1460 Williston, Vermont 05495.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

57th Annual Springfield Penny Sale at Riverside School Gym The 57th Annual Springfield Penny Sale gets underway at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, in the Riverside School gym, with doors open at 6.

The fun involves over 300 prizes with values from $250 down. A great number of prizes are in the $25 to $50 range.

Button Up Vermont Hosts Free Weatherization Clinic In Ascutney There will be a free Button Up Vermont workshop on Wednesday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Weathersfield School in Ascutney.

The workshop will focus on the greatest opportunities for saving energy in homes, finding and sealing air leaks, energy efficiency actions that people can take now,

and where to find technical and financial resources to get started.

Button Up Vermont’s specially trained presenter will lead a slideshow to illustrate hands-on tips, bring samples of energy saving materials, and provide free educational handouts for everyone attending.

Button Up workshops are designed to help people learn about the best ways to save energy in their homes.

Button Up Vermont is a new program of the Central Vermont Community Action Council, in partnership with the Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network (VECAN) and

Efficiency Vermont.

Audobon Society Annual Turkey Dinner

Ascutney Mountain Audubon Society will hold their annual turkey dinner meeting on Friday, October 23 at 6 p.m. at the Methodist Church at the head of the Square in Springfield.

Mike Clough of the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum will follow the short business meeting with a talk on owls and hawks. He will be accompanied by a few live birds.

To make reservations send $13 for adults, $11 for members, $6 each child, aged 6 through 12 to AMAS, P O Box 191, Springfield VT 05156, by October 16.

Children under 6 eat for free. A vegetarian option is also offered.

The Reading and Springfield Public Libraries will sponsor Make-A-Plate workshops for children on Thursday, October 22, from noon to 5 p.m. in Reading and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m in Springfield.

The fee for the workshop is $4 for one plate, due on the day of the event. If parents would like additional plates, they may pay $5.95 for each.

Osher Program on Cuba On Tuesday October 27, at 2 p.m. at the Nolin Murray Center next to St. Mary's Catholic Church on Pleasant Street in Springfield Maricel Lucero will present the next Osher Lifelong Learning program titled, "Cuba:Past and Present."

A native of Santiago de Cuba, Lucero came to the U.S. with her parents at the age of 10. An award winning soprano, she is known for her performances in a variety of genres including Opera, musical theater, Latin American music and jazz. She teaches piano and voice at her home studio in Springfield.

Lucero's program will include general information and a brief history of Cuba and a discussion of U. S./Cuba relations during the past 50 years. She will show slide photos of the Feminine Tone women's chorus trips to Cuba, highlighting their participation in the international music festival.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute membership is $40 for the semester which includes 9 programs. Nonmembers are encouraged and welcome to attend individual lectures for a single program fee of $8.

Edmund O. Hurd 95, died Saturday October 10 at Crest Haven Nursing Home in Cape May, NJ after a long illness.

He was born March 4, 1914 in Laconia, NH the son of Aaron and Bridie (Fullam) Hurd.

He attended schools in the Laconia area.

He was married to Mary M. Hayer on August 1, 1938 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield.

She predeceased him on June 19, 2007.

Mr. Hurd was co-owner of Hurd’s Offset Printing Company with his wife Mary for over 40 years. He was also employed as Supervisor of Mills & Drills at the Bryant Grinder Company in Springfield.

He was a member and 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus Sullivan Council 1159 Springfield, and Stella Maris Council 3546, in Cape May, NJ. Former parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield and a parish-

Get In The Game A View On Sports By Sports Editor Joe Milliken was just as tough, with five interceptions and allowing only 57 yards of passing offense from Mill River.

With the win, the Cosmos are now 5-2 overall (5-1 in the division) with just two games left in the regular season, with a season finale against Bellows Falls on the horizon.

-------------------------Staying in Springfield, the Lady Cosmos field hockey team finished up their season with a tough, 3-2 loss against Woodstock.

Sarah Trombley scored both Springfield goals, with each coming in the second half. The Cosmos also held an edge in shots and corners despite the loss.

Goalie Brittany Grant made eight saves for Springfield, who ends their regular season with a 5-7-2 record.

In local college football action, the Castleton State Spartan football team recently traveled to Paxton, MA to take on the Anna Maria AmCats, winning 24-21 in a tight Division III match up.

Spartan freshman running back Tyler Carpenter scored touchdowns of five and two yards to give Castleton an early 14-0 lead, before Anna Maria bounced back with the next three touchdowns to take a lead.

However Castleton bounced right back with a 5-yard touchdown run from Milton’s Randy Babineau to get the Spartans within a point at 21–20.

Then set the sage for Castleton’s field goal kicker Luis Robitaille, who booted a 28-yard field goal with just 15 seconds left on the clock, lifting his team to the win.

For the Spartans, wide receiver Evan Cassidy (South Burlington) had a big day with eight catches for 147 yards, plus two rushes for 23 yards.

Carpenter led the running attack with 104 yards on 23 carries, while quarterback Shane Brozowski completed 14 of 25 passes for 225 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Thomas Rehders was everywhere, registering 12 tackles on the day, while Cody TanCreti (Windsor) and Dustin Young each pitched in with 10 tackles. Brandon Bergeron (Hartford) also had eight tackles on the day.

The win improved the Spartans’ record to 2-4 on the season, while getting ready to host Husson University on Saturday.

In local football action, the Springfield High School football team is officially back in the state title chase after running over Mill River, 46-0, on the road in North Clarendon.

The win puts the Cosmos at 5-1 on the season and right in the hunt as they chase a second consecutive state championship.

The Cosmos scored touchdowns on their first

two possessions, a 1-yard run from Matt Mitchell (including a 2-point conversion to Colin LaPlante) and then a 5-yard Mitchell touchdown run and the never looked back.

The Cosmos would only put the pedal to the metal from there, getting a 1-yard touchdown run from Brandon Boyle on a quarterback-keeper, a Boyle 45-yard interception-return for a touchdown and then a 61-yard touchdown pass from Boyle to Bennett Chevalier to make it 33-0 at halftime.

In the second half the Cosmos would add a 61yard touchdown run from Boyle and a Kodi Andrews pick-off for another touchdown to round out the scoring.

However, the Springfield offense was not the only story of this game, for the Cosmos' defense

---------------------------In the NFL this past weekend, it looks like all Tom Brady needed was to play the Tennessee Titans in order to return to form, as he threw for six touchdowns including a record five in one quarter, in an embarrassing romp over the Titans, 59-0.

Oh, how the mighty fall quickly in the NFL. Last season the Titans finished as the number-one seed in the AFC with an impressive, 14-3 record.

And now, with the loss to the Patriots in the snow, Tennessee stands at 0-6, with no end to the misery in sight.

BFUHS Hosts Cross Country Meet Story and photos by Joe Milliken–Sports Editor Bellows Falls Union High School recently hosted their annual Russ Pickering Invitational cross country meet on a sunny Friday afternoon in Westminster. The race featured both high school and middler school athletes.

The BF middle school runners had a terrific showing, with eighth grader Tim Jones taking first place overall, covering the 2700m course in 10:17.

Other Bellows Falls finishers included Ian McKeen (26th place) 10:54, Willie Moore (59th) 11:52, Jonah

Bolotin (63rd) 11:55, Caleb Newton (68th) 11:58 and Will Scarlett (99th) 12:37.

On the girls’ side, BF also had a great showing in which the Lady Terriers finished in the top three.

Sarah Wells finished first (11:10), Anna Clark second (11:10) and Emily Dufault in third at 11:16.

Lucy Lawlor finished seventh (12:34) and rounding out the scoring was Tianna Schilinger in 18th at 15:45.

Lady Presidents Gear-Up For Another Title Run Story by Joe Milliken Messenger Sport Editor The defending Division IV girls’ state champion Black River High school Lady Presidents soccer team continue their winning ways as they head into the upcoming state tournament.

The Lady Presidents faced off against Division II Otter Valley in the consolation game of the Black River Invitational Tournament.

BR took an early lead on an Angi Valente goal with an assist coming from Hannah Josselyn.

The Lady Presidents kept pressing and the hard work paid off with an unassisted goal for Josselyn.

Josselyn then finished off the scoring with her second goal of the night on an assist from Rachel Brozza.

Zoe Trimboli made six saves in the net to preserve the shut out win.

“The team is now playing better soccer.

We’re playing our game,” commented Black River Coach Pat Pullinen.

The Lady Presidents played two more games during the week, first against the Big Green of Mount St. Joseph.

Angi Valente had a hat trick plus an assist, with Hannah Josselyn also getting a goal.

Emily Hammond, Sarah Hawkins and Josselyn each had assists in the win.

“Angi worked to get into position to score the goals and she was fed some great balls right in front of the goal,” coach Coach Pullinen stated after the match.

The defense was anchored by Tina Valente, Kaitlynd Palmer and Sarah Hawkins along with goalie Zoe Trimboli, who only neededto make three saves in the win.

“It was great to get everyone some quality playing time,” Pullinen also added.

Black River followed

BR came out strong and jumped out early on a four goal performance from Hannah Josselyn.

“Hannah and the Seniors appreciated the importance of this game and got off the bus and were all business” coach Pullinen stated.

Emily Hammond added another goal as BR went on to win 5 – 1.

Pullinen also spoke of the solid play of Tina Valente and Gabe Macklin as well as Katie O’Neil on defense. Zoe Trimboli had four saves in another strong game in the net.

Black River improved their record to 9-1-2, with their only loss coming back in early September to the same Proctor team.

They finish the season next week with two home games vs West Rutland and Poultney.

Leland & Gray Outlasts Black River Story by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor Photos submitted by Bruce Schmidt The Leland & Gray High School boys varsity soccer team recently hosted Black River High School in a tightly contested, MVL match up, with the Rebels holding off the Presidents, 1–0 in Townshend.

On a rain-soaked field, the Rebels got the lone score on a corner kick that barely bent into the goal over the outstretched arms of BR keeper Chris Kowalski.

The Presidents worked hard on their short passing game and kept the Rebels on their heals

as they headed to the goal, but couldn’t score.

The midfield play of Ben Farrow and Kippy Turco was strong with some good offensive runs by Mathias Philipsen and Jake Covell.

The defense of Black River was strong with Tyler Schaub, Victor Cuccullo and Justin Cuccullo thwarting strong Rebel Attacks.

James Greenwood was a force in midfield making some offensive runs and winning the headballs.

Kowalski was his usual strong self between the pipes and had 7 saves.
