Preserving Barns in Mount Holly

The Mount Holly Barn Preservation Association is marking the “rebirth” of the 1820 Crowley/Davis barn on Healdville Road in Mount Holly on Saturday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m.

The ceremony is hosted by the barn owner, Rev. Glen Davis.

A reception will follow in the Crowley Cheese Factory - a National Historic Landmark – which is next to the barn.

“Just four years ago the barn was ready to collapse in the next snowfall” said Davis.

“With the help of the Barn Association we got an expert assessment and a State barn grant. But we couldn’t pull together the matching funds for the grant until we got a loan from the new fund set up by the Barn Association.”

“Many other barn owners have the same problem as Rev. Davis”

said Annette Lynch, President of the Board of the Mount Holly organization. “That is why we established the Barn Repair Revolving Loan

Fund. A $5,000 grant from the Windham Foundation has given us a great start.”

Weston Antique Show Ready to Roll Submitted by the Weston Antiques Show The 2009 Weston Antiques Show, in its 51st year, will take place in the Weston Playhouse on October 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Thursday, October 1 the will be a Gala Preview from 5 to 7 p.m. for early buyers.

Admission is $50 and includes wine and hors d’oeuvres.

It’s an evening of distinctive antiques and great fun.

With all booths filled with outstanding dealers, Show Chair Patti Prairie anticipates that the show will be another resounding success for patrons and dealers alike.

“We have 29 exhibitors returning from 2008,” said Prairie, “including some, like Charles and Barbara Adams, from Yarmouth, MA, who have been mainstays of the show for over 20 years. In addition, we have brought on five new dealers who will add vitality and variety.”

the Vermont Historical Society in 2008.

Marx, who resides in Belmont with his wife Pat, makes two or three trips a year to climb,trek or bike in remote highlands and mountains on the five continents.

The ninth annual Fall Foliage Golf Tournament to benefit the Rutland County Humane Society will be held on Friday, October 2 at the ProctorPittsford Country Club.

their talent and compete for cash prizes and bragging rights at the Ludlow Rotary Club’s 18th Annual Chili CookOff. The tasting starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m.

All that’s needed to enter the contest are three gallons of chili in a pot with a serving spoon and a $10 entry fee.

The Rotary Club will provide the table, Sterno and customer service.

The Rotary Club Chili Cook-Off will take place rain or shine in a large tent at the corner of Depot and Main streets—by the traffic light—in the center of downtown Ludlow.

A $6 admission entitles Chili Cook-Off visitors to

all the chili they can eat, as well as bread, cider and ice cream.

Proceeds from the Annual Chili Cook-Off benefit the Black River Valley Senior Center and other Rotary projects.

Cash prizes will be awarded in three "People's Choice" categories – $100 to win, $50 to place and $25 to show.

Judges' awards will recognize the Best Chili, the Spiciest Chili and the chili served with the best Team Spirit.

Mill Street’s Hidden Gem

McBride Takes Vermont Non-Profit Economic Model To European Symposium Submitted by Robert McBride, Rockigham Arts and Museum Project (RAMP) This July the University of Bologna's department of economics hosted a week long symposium, The Future of Social Enterprise: Models and Experience. from July 6 to 11 at the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro, Forlì Campus.

Thirty-five participants from around the world, with a variety of backgrounds, attended.

Robert McBride, founding director of the Rockingham Arts and Museum Project (RAMP), www.rampvt.org in Bellows Falls was selected to participate.

“First of all, having a chance to go to Italy is always an incredible experience and to be with a group of people interested in social economy which loosely parallels the whole concept in the United States of the not-forprofit model and exchange ideas was a great experience,” McBride said. “Many of the other participants where PhD students ineconomics; I was one of the few practitioners that had developed a not-for-profit organization.”

McBride founded RAMP in 1995 in order to help contribute to Bellows Falls revitalization.

Its mission is to recognize how artists and the arts enrich communities culturally, socially and economically.

“Community building is incremental and takes time,” McBride saids, “it is hard for me to believe that RAMP is already entering its 14th year!”

Over the years, RAMP has through creative collaborations been building community through arts advocacy and leveraging the creative economy network in the regionally, statewide and nationally.

The week-long symposium brought together a distinguished group of scholars and professors coming from all over Europe and the world for an intense week of analysis and discussion of the current issues on Social Economy and Social Enterprises. www.esse.unibo.it “It was very heartening to spend a week with a group of people from around the world engaged and motivated by developing business models that incorporate social good and not just profit as the primary outcome.”

McBride added. “It certainly has opened the door for me to think a lot more beyond the not-forprofit model onto the whole arena of third sector economy.”

afternoon from noon to 4 p.m. The mill is located, appropriately enough, on Mill Street, which is at the south end of The Square, right beside The Messenger’s offices.

Because the mill was in use up until the early 1960s, it didn’t fall into disrepair like so many other industrial buildings from the 1800s.

In fact, when the mill was closed, the slateroofed wood and stone structure was locked up as a working facility, and all of the original equipment is still inside and essentially in

working order.

In 1927, when the hydroelectric facility was built nearby, the gristmill was converted from water power to electricity, as the powerplant was now using the canal’s water to power its generators.

The Bellows Falls Historical Society supervises the building, and over the years have used it to house a growing collection of area historical artifacts.

Inside are historic signs, kitchen wares, horse and oxen muzzles, a chest filled with the millwright’s tools,

bottles, cameras, old radios, games, toys and more. All of the grain elevators are still intact, as are the scales and power supply system.

In it’s day, Bellows Falls was a major manufacturing center and the mill houses a nice collection of stoves and Vermont Farm Machinery Company pieces as well.

Community Supper Submitted by Grafton Cares On Friday, September 18 at 6 p.m. at the Chapel, Grafton Cares is beginning its new season of once a month community suppers for residents of Athens and Grafton.

If you have kids in the Grafton School, sign them up for the afterschool program at the library.

Michelle and our other Grafton Cares volunteers, who are all former teachers, will escort them to the library for a variety of activities and walk them up to the supper.

American Girl Club Submitted by Village Square Book Sellers On September 19 from 2 to 4 p.m., Village square Books located at 32 The Square in Bellows Falls, will be hosting an American Girl Club event.

Activities will include crafts, the reading of books and more. This month's activity will be "Back to School" - making chalkboards for the dolls and decorating a ruler for the girls.

American Girl Club is limited to 10 children so be sure to register early, and the event is recommended for girls ages 8 and up, or younger with adult supervision.

Scores of “houses” and other buildings, gardens, and constructions that might accommodate all sorts of wee folk will appear overnight as if by magic, on a woodland trail at the Village Park behind The Nature Museum.

Tour days at the Nature Museum and Village Park in Grafton will be on Saturday, September 26, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, September 27, 1 to 4 p.m.

A spectacular 86” by 102” queen-sized quilt that Dr. Judith Petry has created and donated to Westminster Cares will be raffled off at the October 17-18 Westminster Quilt Show.

MSA kicked off its new weekly Creative Arts Program (CAP) on Thursday, September 3.

The program allows children to be accompanied directly from the Saxtons River Elementary School to MSA for an arts enrichment program that

continues throughout the school year, with a broad range of arts-related activities offered.

Did anyone happen to catch Michael Jordan's basketball Hall of Fame induction speech over the weekend? To be honest, I couldn't believe what I was hearing from basketball's "greatest player ever."

After David Robinson, John Stockton, Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer give humbled, heart-warming speeches in which they thanked everyone under the sun, it simply made Jordan's speech appear crass, arrogant and down-right petty.

Instead of talking about his upbringing and how hard he worked to become that "greatest player ever" and global icon, he chose to drudge up old battles with former players, coaches and owners.

You mean to tell me, Michael, you didn't have

anything better to talk about than some old grudge you have against former head coach Jeff Van Gundy or former (journeyman) hoop player Byron Nelson, or former Bulls owner Jerry Krause or Hall of Famers Magic Johnson and George "Iceman" Gervin for "freezing you out" in your rookie all-star game 20 years ago?

Jordan also jabbed at his former legendary North Carolina college coach Dean Smith for not including him on a Sports Illustrated cover his freshman year, and even his high school coach for

cutting him from the school team.

Then at the end, when he finally got around to thanking his family, he said he was sorry for all the expectations he had created for them and actually said, “heck, I wouldn't want to be you."

Well gee, thanks Dad! Quite frankly it was the worst Hall of Fame speech I have ever heard and I am glad he was a Bull and not a Celtic.

Give me Larry Bird and the "Big Three" any day of the week.

--------------------------The NFL kicked into high gear over the

weekend and anyone who has Saints quarterback Drew Brees on their fantasy football team (that would be me) was certainly happy, as Brees threw six touchdown passes in a romp over the lowly Lions.

Brett Favre won his debut as a Viking, but it was mostly by handing the ball off to the best running back in the league in Adrian Peterson.

The Cowboys are in early-season form as QB Tony Romo threw three touchdown passes in a win over Tampa Bay. Romo threw for a career-

high 353 yards and three touchdown passes in the victory, but we gotta see him to that in January, not September.

As we go to press, the Patriots get set for their season debut on Monday Night Football, as Tom Brady returns to the line up. Buffalo may have T.O. now, (they can have him) but they should be no test for the Pats highpowered offense led by Brady, Moss and Welker.

However New England will certainly need that high powered offense, for the defense seems to still have some question to be answered.

TERRIERS WIN HOME OPENER OVER OTTER VALLEY Story by Joe Milliken, Sports Editor Photo by Doug MacPhee The Bellows Falls Terrier football team bounced back from an opening-game defeat with a 14-6 home-win over Otter Valley, in Westminster.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Terriers got the first big break of the game when Joe Stockwell recovered a fumble on the Otters 17-yard line, before Tim Muzzey ran it in from the 3-yard line and Nick Edwards booted the extra point for a 7-0 Terrier lead.

The contest went scoreless from there,

until Otter Valley finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter after Casey Babcock returned a kick off 69-yards to set up a touchdown pass from QB Zakk Williams to Babcock.

However BF's Josh Pratt made a big play, getting his hand on the extra point to keep the BF lead at 7-6.

Early in the fourth quarter and with Otter Valley punting from their own 5-yard line, BF got great field position on the Otters 25-yard line.

BF drove down inside the 10-yard line before quarterback Ben Hewitt rolled to the outside and

beat the defense to the corner for the touchdown. The extra point was good for a 14-6 BF lead.

Not giving up however, Otter Valley then drove down to the Terriers 33-yard line before the drive stalled on fourth down, allowing the Terriers to get the ball back and run out the clock.

The win put Bellows Falls at 1-1 on the season as they get ready to travel to Mount Abraham.

Chiefs, Walker Take Home-Opener Over Horde Story and photos by Joe Milliken, Sports Editor In their season home opener against West Rutland, the Green Mountain Union High School boys' soccer team got three big goals from Cooper Neass and some clutch, second half goal tending from sophomore Jacob Walker as the Chiefs held on for a 3-2 win over the Golden Horde, in Chester.

Cooper Neass, Ryan Bartley and Luke Thompson began developing some offensive chemistry from the get-go, setting each other up a few times in

the first ten minutes, without being about to finish one off.

However at 30:36 Neass did finish one off, knocking a shot in from the left side of the box on a nice feed from Fisher.

The Chiefs quickly had two more opportunities to add another, but a Thompson cross to Neass and another blast from Fisher both went wide, GM couldn't capitalize.

Shortly thereafter, West River's Adan Garcia created a break away and tied the game with a shot just past Walker, inside the right post. Walker had come out on the play

to try and cut off the angle, but really had no chance on the play.

Garcia came back again at 14:54 to give the Golden Horde the lead on another break away that Walker really had no shot at, before the Chieftains bounced back again.

And again it was Neass, this time knocking in a header at 11:11 on a beautiful cross from Rex Calabresse.

But once again, Green Mountain had a couple more chances to break the tie before the half, but couldn't cash one in and

The second half would be much of the same, a tightly contested match with both teams getting opportunities to score, but the only goal came from once again, Neass who broke the tie and gave the Chiefs the win.

Walker also made some key stops to help preserve the win.

played all over the US, in Canada, and Europe, at universities and festivals such as Bonnaroo, as well as rock clubs and venues such as the David Byrne-curated series in Carnegie Hall.

She sings in both English and Persian, and in her Persian songs, incorporates poetry from the mystical tradition of Rumi, Hafez, and their contemporaries.

Supporting programs like Making the Most of I is not unusual for Haale. While an undergraduate at Stanford University, she volunteered at women’s non-profit organizations, including the Support Network for Battered Women in California, and the Women’s Health Education Resource Center on a reservation in South Dakota.

Opening for Haale will be Luz Elena Morey, a singer songwriter from Brattleboro who is also one of the professionals who presents in the 14 week course for MMI. She has worked with MMI for several years.

On Sunday, September 20 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Haale will lead a poetry reading workshop in which she will

order to make it accessible to low income women.

“We address issues that impact women’s lives, such as stress reduction, communication and conflict resolution, self esteem and body image.

“Some women are dealing with depression, domestic violence, isolation, mental health issues, substance abuse, or are in need of parenting skills. We provide information and resources in those areas to support women to move forward and make the changes they want in their lives.

“The group dynamic is powerful. We use music, painting, collage, writing and movement also to show how that supports each woman’s healing.”

VAULT Offers Workshops

Gallery at the VAULT is kicking off the fall season with three workshops this September.

A six-week drawing workshop Tuesday evenings begins September 22 and runs through October 27.

Over the course of six Tuesday evenings, students will learn basic drawing skills in The Practice of Drawing in Art with Virginia Wyoming. Two different workshops are offered Saturday, September 26: Mixed Media Scrapbook and Fun Felted Pumpkins.

In the downstairs workshop area students will use a variety of media, methods and

materials to create a unique album of summer memories. In the Open Wall room students will learn the skills of needle felting while creating spooky, scary or happy pumpkins.

Elisabeth grew up surrounded by music on her family's farm in Waitsfield and her father was a member of the renowned Trapp Family Singers.

Inspired by his guitar

playing and singing, she began taking piano lessons when she was eight and at sixteen, was traveling the back roads of New England, performing with her siblings at weddings, gospel meetings and hospitals.

Elisabeth's voice has been nurtured by a rich tradition of classical, folk and pop music, with her many formative musical influences including Mozart, Schubert, the Beatles, and Joni Mitchell.

For over 40 years the cello has been the voice of Erich Kory, and even

though the music he plays on it has changed, the cello has always helped him to realize who he is, while helping audiences connect to their own inner-selves.

He has worked from the stages of Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, with conductors Leonard Bernstein and Andre Previn, and with performers Kathleen Battle, Tony Bennett and Sting.

As with each of the "Sundays on the Hill" concert series, admission to the concert is $5, with children admitted free.

Seats are unreserved and the doors open about 3:30 pm.

30th Annual Peru Fair – VT Top 10 Event Submitted by the Peru Fair Committee Peru’s Village Green and its two hundred yard long Main Street will once again play host to several thousand visitors at its annual fair on Saturday, September 26.

“We’ve really got a terrific group of over 90 local craftspeople and companies exhibiting and selling their wares this year,” noted Fran Tobia, long time committee member.

“Weather cooperating, we are really hoping to top last year ’s attendance of over 3500 people who still showed up, even on a rainy day.”

The Peru Fair, now in its 30th year, has become a community event with over 50 town and local area volunteers and high school seniors pitching in to help make it a success to the benefit of the Peru Scholarship Fund.

“Some people may be away one year, but they are back helping to man the gates the following year,” said Virginia Morgan, the committee member responsible for the annual raffle awarding numerous gifts donated by local business people to the lucky winners. “Over time, there is probably not one of the town’s 400

Roger Jasaitis will be the artist for the month of September at the Wardsboro Library, in Wardsboro.

His background includes his education at the DuCret School of the Arts which laid the foundation for his exploration of contemporary painting and materials in the context of classicism.

Jasaitis also formed a punk band and explored aural expressionism in several major cities and venues.

Making a break from the music industry, he moved to Vermont to live and work exclusively on expressing his artistic vision in paint. His work is in private collections across the United States and Europe.

The theme of the show is Surf and Turf, a collection of 10 oil paintings inspired by coastal Maine and the mountains of Southern Vermont.

Peace Festival In Londonderry In Honor of the International Day of Peace sponsored annually by the United Nations, Koinonia of Vermont is holding a Peace Festival on Sunday, September 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Blue Gentian Lodge located on Magic Mountain Access Road in Londonderry.

The program will be a celebration, focusing on the potential for a world moving away from war, violence and poverty.

Entertainment will be by Jeff Loewer on vibraphone and Don, The "Junk" Man. There will also be presentations on peace efforts worldwide and locally: Clean Water for the World, Dismas House, Hospice and Bread for the World. Most importantly, there will be the recognition of a local peace building family. Light refreshments will be served.

This is an exciting opportunity for the local community to join together for a few pleasant hours in honor of the UN International Day of Peace.

Brattleboro Retreat Throws 175th Gala

Grace Cottage Medication Safety Workshop Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend is holding a free session of the Medication Use Safety Training for Senior program (MUST for Senior) on Thursday, September 17 from 10 to11:30 a.m., to provide important information about safe medicine use

to older adults and their caregivers.

The session will be led by Grace Cottage Hospital Pharmacist Jim Heal and will be held in the hospital’s EMS Training Room.

BMC Hosts Practice In Action Forum On Monday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m., the Music School of the Brattleboro Music Center will host a free forum entitled "Practice in Action" designed to give insight this was the first time he was sharing this painful story publicly. His brother died of renal failure in 1999 at the age of 47, a condition that was the direct result of his advanced alcoholism.

Choking back his emotions at times during his talk, Howard admitted that he personally had “had enough to drink for two lifetimes,” but felt that he had a strong story to tell, noting that not many families were unaffected by mental illness and addictions.

Following his pesentation, Howard was surprised to become the first recipient of the Anna Marsh Award honoring advocacy from mental illness.

The event raised over $130,000 and was sold out with over 400 guests attending. The entertainment featured a great, young Swing band from Boston with an American Idol top 10 finalist, 2004’s John Stevens, as vocalist. And perhaps most strikingly, the special guest speaker, Emmy and Tony Award winning actor Ken Howard, gave a very moving account of dealing with his younger brothers struggles with mental illness and addiction.

Howard, who spoke of his brother as “stunningly smart” and talented in sports, music and theater, said
