LAKE PLACID — There has never been an Olympic Winter Games in which at least one Lake Placid area athletes hasn’t competed. As a mater a fact, the very first winter Olympic medal ever awarded, gold, was to Lake Placid native and speedskater Charles Jewtraw, during the 1924 games in Chamonix, France. This February, there will be

Celebrate the “Miracle” of the Lake Placid winter games Branch, Rabideau to LAKE PLACID — Thirty years ago, a group of college kids and one 22-year-old united the United States like never before. Families were gathered around the television set, or spending as much time reading the sports page as they were the world and national news pages, wondering if this team will win again and could he skate to another Olympic gold medal. Each time the answer was yes, as the U.S. hockey team stunned the world winning gold and Eric Heiden won five Olympic speedskating gold medals, making the 1980 Olympic Winter Games one of the most memorable events in all of sports history. While at the same time as the Olympic Winter Games will take place in February, in Vancouver, Canada, you can re-live that magical moment of 30 years ago, or create your own Olympic memories when Lake Placid cele-

And who can forget what Eric accomplished in speedskating or what Phil Mahre did in the alpine events. Moments and memories like these only come around once in a lifetime.” During Lake Placid’s 30th anniversary celebration,

SARANAC LAKE —The slate of candidates is set for the upcoming elections in the village of Saranac Lake, and apparently there will be a contest for the post to lead the municipality. On March 16, Democrat Clyde Rabideau will square off with current trustee and Republican Jeff Branch in the race for village mayor. The Saranac Lake Republican Party’s selection of Branch as the candidate for mayor at their Jan. 26 caucus wasn’t a surprise, as he was the only member of the group interested in the seat. But the caucus wasn’t devoid of the unexpected, as about 40 party members plucked a non-Republican for one of the two vacant village board seats. Of the three individuals interested in running for village trustee, two were registered Republicans, while Elias “Allie” Pelletieri is a registered Conservative. And when the votes were tallied, NBT Bank financial advisor Diana Howard was the most favored among those in attendance while Pelletieri finished a close second. For Village Justice, Republicans chose longtime Harrietstown Justice Tom Glover for the vacant four-year post and corrections officer Ken McLaughlin for the two-year Justice seat, vacated last fall by Charles Bell. Branch said this week the vote for Mayor will test the

brates the 30th anniversary of the XIII Olympic Winter Games. “That was an incredible moment in history, not only for Lake Placid, but for the entire country,” noted Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) president/CEO Ted Blazer.

“Those Games will forever be remembered for overcoming the impossible, whether, it’s a small Upstate New York village hosting the world’s largest sporting event, or the U.S. hockey team defeating the heavily favored former-Soviet Union on their way to gold.
