Ticonderoga Youth Softball 2012 Year in Review Stacy Gunning-Charboneau Ti Youth Softball President T I C O N D E R O G A — Ti c o n d e r o g a Youth Softball had nearly 90 girls playing in the summer of 2012 as they marked their 25th anniversary. The league featured eight teams this year, having four minors with 10 kids each and four majors with 12 kids each. The minor teams consisted of the Devils, Angels, Gators and Blackhawks and the majors were the Panthers, Bulldogs, Sharks and Wolves. Over the past couple of years, we have been restructuring the league and its rules. We feel we have come up with a good set of rules and have expanded the age requirements to include more children. We now have a solid base to continue building our league on, hopefully for many years to come. This year our officers are: President, Stacy Gunning-Charboneau; Vice President, Scott Montville; Secretary, Mike Bruce; and Treasurer, Kasey Paige. We had eight managers: Keith Dolbeck, Tom Dorsett, Kiwi James, Jamie Waldron, Scott Montville, Sharron Dorsett, Rick Merrill, and Stacy Gunning-Charboneau. We have a very dedicated team working together to get a lot done over each season. We also have several coaches that work with the girls and put a lot of time and hard work in each season. In 2012, we added a batting cage, put in with the help of Bridge Point Communication (Anthony & Shana Macey), of Crown Point, Dan Scuderi and Steve Palmer for welding. Together with many of our league volunteers, it came together very nicely and early in the season. The girls really needed a batting cage closer to the field, and it has definitely gotten a lot of use this year. As we end another season, I would like to take a moment to thank the volunteers, coaches, managers, parents and children for making this another successful year. Without the local and surrounding communities’ support, we would not be able to have this program possible, and I would like to thank all who support us. There are many things that go into a league that people do not see, and we appreciate all that is done. We are always looking for volunteers and new ideas, so please contact us if anyone is interested.

8 - Softball Yearbook
We started 25 years ago in 1987 By Keith Dolbeck TICONDEROGA — I was acting chairperson for the Youth Commission after Richard Hathaway resigned and Marty Anderson, Elliot Shaw and I asked the commission to sponsor a youth softball program that summer. We started out with two teams: the Purple Panthers coached by Dolbeck and Andersen and the Pink Pythons coached by Shaw. We each had daughters (Sarah Dolbeck, Caron Andersen and
Michelle Shaw) at the time who wanted to play softball and NO opportunities existed. That is why we started the league. We practiced a great deal and played each other three times. I was also the Ti Varsity Softball coach at the time and wanted to get a league started so that we would eventually have a feeder program for high school softball like Little League was for high school baseball. After the first year, I turned the program over completely to Marty Andersen, and he ran the program very successfully for 15 years. Without Marty’s leadership and energy, the program would have died, as very limited funding was available through the Youth Commission. Marty was also responsible for getting the town and IP together and building the present third softball field. After a few years, the Youth Commission Softball Program grew to nine teams of approximately 12 girls per team. That’s over 100 girls ages 8-12 playing softball where just a few years earlier, there were no opportunities. Throughout the years, the league had many wonderful volunteers who coached and helped the league be the success that it is today. Within five or six years, the Ticonderoga girls high school softball had a JV and a Modified program where earlier there was only a Varsity program. After a few more years, Ticonderoga dominated the Champlain Valley High School Softball League and has been ranked in the top 10 in Class C for the past 15 years. After retiring from high school, coaching for last 10 years, I came back to manage my old team, the Purple Panthers in 2012, 25 years later. The team achieved a perfect record of 9-0.
