Ticonderoga to hold summer youth program

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ticonderoga will have a youth recreation program this summer.

The program, which served about 200 children each year, was victim of budget cuts a year ago. The 2013 program will be self-sufficient, according to Dave Iuliano, Ti trustee. It will not cost local taxpayers.

The cost of the program, which is due at registration, is $10 a day for each child. Children who are entering kindergarten through age 13 can attend up to five days a week 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 8 through Aug. 2 at Ticonderoga

Elementary-Middle School. Scholarships are available to low-income families.

The town needs $20,000 to operate the summer program „ thatÍ s 100 children at $50 a week ($10 a day). ñ WeÍ ve had a healthy number of pre-registrations and strong success raising money for a scholarship fund,î said John Bartlett of the Ti Kiwanis, who are assisting with the program. ñ The program is going forward.î Registration will continue until Monday, July 1. Scholarships are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Scholarship information is available at the town clerk’s office.

The summer program is crucial, Iuliano said, because by holding organized recreational and educational activities the town becomes eligible for the federal USDA breakfast and lunch program.

That program provides free breakfast, lunch and snack to all children age 18 and younger in the community. The breakfast and lunch program is not limited to children attending the rec program and there are no income limitations.

Breakfast will be served 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. with lunch 11:15 a.m. to noon.

The recreation program will offer swimming, sports, arts and crafts, games, bowling, Arts Trek and more, according to Angie MacAlpine, the program director. It will be certified by the state. ñ ItÍ ll be similar to the program weÍ ve had in past years,î she said. ñ I think itÍ s a real bargain for parents. Babysitting, supervised activities, breakfast and lunch for $10 a day.î The key is the free breakfast, lunch and snack program, Iuliano said.

ñ The food program is a big part this,î he said. ñ ItÍ s so important to make certain children have access to food.î Childhood hunger and poverty has become an issue in Ticonderoga. Nearly half the local school population qualifies for free or reducedprice lunches and almost 20 percent of Ticonderoga children live in poverty, according to the U.S. Census. ñ The summer program is great,î Bartlett said, ñ but the driving force here is getting the food service available to our children. ItÍ s really a great program that can really help struggling families.î Iuliano has been working with Bartlett on the KiwanisÍ ñ BackPackî program. That effort works closely with Ticonderoga Central Schools to send eligible children from Ticonderoga Elementary School home for the weekends with backpacks filled with nutritious, shelf-stable and easily prepared foods. ñ This is a way to address a serious problem in the community,î Bartlett said of the USDA free summer breakfast and lunch program. ñ The food program is free, but we must have a recreation program to qualify.î Bartlett suggested local civic groups, churches and individuals may like to sponsor a child in the program. Teen gambling concerns Prevention Team Assistance offered to teens, families

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA ThereÍ s a good bet a local teen-ager has placed a wager on this week’s NBA finals.

More than 40 percent of all Essex County students admit they have gambled in the past year, according to The Prevention Team. The numbers range from 15 percent of eighth graders to 53 percent of high school seniors. ñ ItÍ s important for parents to have a discussion with their children about gambling,î Linda Gerardi, Prevention Team community outreach coordinator, said. ñ The statistics show one in four boys will develop a gambling problem. We need to help our children understand the risks associated with gambling.î ThatÍ s why the Ticonderoga-based Prevention Team is offering assistance to teens and their families who may be concerned about gambling. The Prevention Team is a non-profit agency that provides alcohol, tobacco and other drug education and prevention services for Essex County.

The Prevention Team is now available to discuss gambling and children. It will make presentations to any parent, community or church group interested in learning more. Interested people can call Gerardi at 585-7424.

The group has also started a series of public service announcements warning about the dangers of problem gambling.

And to extend the message further, The Prevention Team offers a student-produced play that focuses on teen gambling to be performed at schools and other venues.

Gerardi stressed the message is not anti-gambling; itÍ s gambling education. ñ Teens donÍ t perceive the risks involved,î she said. ñ They donÍ t realize itÍ s more likely to lose than to win. They donÍ t understand odds and the pitfalls of losing. Teaching kids the consequences of gambling is the best way to help them.î TodayÍ s teens face greater exposure to gambling than ever before, Gerardi pointed out. The internet has opened up a world of online poker, games of chance, sports betting and more. And gambling that was once illegal, is now flourishing at casinos in Saratoga and St. Regis Falls. ñ ItÍ s all around us,î Gerardi said of gambling, ñ even right here. Every convenience store offers the lottery. It seems like every church and school is holding a raffle.”

Teens can be at the greatest risk in their own homes. Online gambling is especially dangerous, Gerardi said. Many sites offer free games to lure people into playing. Often those free games allow people to win to further entice them. ñ ItÍ s very easy to gamble,î she said. ñ Then, gradually, a problem develops.î Gambling addictions are real, Gerardi said. ñ Many people think gambling is just a bad habit, that they can quit at any time,î she said. ñ It can be an addiction, just like alcohol or drugs, with psychological and physiological aspects.

There are specific treatments for people with gambling addictions.î Brain scans of cocaine addicts are very similar to those of compulsive gamblers, Gerardi pointed out. ñ That means itÍ s not just a matter of willpower,î she said. ñ Problem gamblers need help.î Teens are at greater risk of becoming gambling addicts than adults, according to studies, because they are impulsive, lack maturity, react to peer influence, feel invincible, don’t fully understand the gaming industry and don’t understand the financial implications.

Studies also show teens who gamble are more likely to also have problems with alcohol, drugs and crime.

Gerardi said there are warning signs of problem gambling parents should be watching for „ increased time online, increased anxiety and depression, problems with family and friends, borrowing or stealing money, academic problems and personality changes.

Parents should also beware of increased use of gambling terms such as point spreads, favorites, underdogs, etc. ñ ThereÍ s a lot of help available,î Gerardi said. ñ If you get help your circumstances will get better.î People with gambling concerns can contact Gerardi at The Prevention Team at 585-7424 or the New York State Gambling HopeLine at 1-877-846-7369. Wania had also been district director of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State, District IV and just recently became first vice president of the state organization, the FGCNYS. Tompkins, a resident of Ballston Spa, is a member of the Ballston Spa House and Garden Club and has also been a member of the Carillon Garden Club. Driving range to open in Ticonderoga TICONDEROGA „ In the winter of 1757 Rogers Rangers British troops ran into an ambush by the French and Indian troops.

In the midst of what is now known as the ñ Battle on Snowshoesî the air was filled with tension, musket balls and fear of what was to come. A confederacy of Iroquoian Indians known as the Five Nations played an important role in this and many other battles.

Now, 256 years later, in the vicinity of where that battle occurred on Route 9N just north of the Ticonderoga Country Club, the Five Nations Driving Range will open to the public in the near future.

Visitors will be able to practice drives, iron shots and pitching.

Five Nations will offer a driving range with targets between 100 and 275 yards and a snack bar. A chipping course will be set up as well for occasional use.

Five Nations will also be available for special events and birthdays. Customers will be able to buy buckets of various sizes, or purchase seasonal memberships. There will be special rates for children younger than age 12.

Five Nations is also teaming up with Ti Country ClubÍ s PGA Professional George Mackey to offer a number of golf clinics for both beginning adults and children throughout the season.

Jay Wells, a Ticonderoga native and economics teacher at Ticonderoga High, along with Paul and Jane Ingrey are the owners of the driving range.

“I grew up golfing and working with George at Ticonderoga Country Club (TCC),î Wells said. ñ I couldnÍ t be more excited about partnering with him on the clinics and opening this new business as a complement to the offerings at TCC and the town of Ticonderoga. Ticonderoga From page 1 based prevention coordinator, agrees Ticonderoga needs to take action. ñ Ticonderoga had a strong community coalition for 2005-2010 to deal with substance abuse, especially underage drinking and other drug use among young people,î he said. ñ The Prevention Team was involved in supporting the development of that coalition and the implementation of its programming. ñ Ticonderoga has a very positive community spirit and the school and the community care deeply about young people,î he added. ñ It is great news that Supervisor Deb Malaney and (Police) Chief Mark Johns are working together to develop a new community coalition to reduce substance abuse, including binge drinking, illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription medications.î MacDevitt said surveys show a decrease in under-age drinking and an increase in marijuana use among Essex County teens.

He doesnÍ t have statistics for just Ticonderoga.

“Unfortunately, these levels are significantly above national averages, so communities still have work to do,î he said. ñ Especially troubling is that more than one in five seventh and eighth graders report riding in a car or truck in the past 30 days with a driver who has been drinking. ñ We know that youth binge drinking and other drug abuse closely parallels adult binge drinking and drug abuse,î he added. ñ Adults in our communities need to mobilize and take action on a community level to change the conditions that support substance abuse and insure that our small towns and villages are great places for families and kids. ñ Ticonderoga is taking an important step in this positive direction,î MacDevitt said.

The passing of the Greatest Generation

I

n the amount of time it took to brush your teeth this morning a World War II veteran passed away from old age. Now well into their 80s and 90s, the men and women who fought and won the Great Conflict are dying at the rate of more than 800 a day. ThatÍ s approximately one every two minutes.

At one time, there were more than 15 million WWII veterans in the United States. That number has now dwindled to a little more than a million and the median age of a World War II vet is now 92.

It is estimated by the US Veterans Administration that by 2036, there will be no living WWII veterans left to tell their stories of the sights, sounds, victories and horrors of the deadliest war in world history.

Regrettably, many will also never get the opportunity to personally view the National World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. that was dedicated in 2004 to the men and women who fought and died in World War II. That is why the work being done by North Country Honor Flight should be recognized and lauded.

An arm of the national not-for-profit Honor Flight Network, the group was formed in March 2012 by Keeseville resident Danny Kaifetz with the goal of flying North Country WWII veterans to see the War II Memorial in Washington D.C. The premise is simple. Many WWII vets do not have the finances or physical wherewithal to make the trip to D.C. In many cases, friends and family also lack the resources and time to complete the three-to four-day trip by vehicle to the nationÍ s capital.

With that in mind, North Country Honor Flight offers free transportation and airfare to and from the memorial. Accompanying the veterans are guardians who assist with the trip and the bus transporting them to Albany airport is flanked by veteran groups like the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, the Patriot Guard and the Legion Riders.

While in Albany, they are joined by other Honor Flight groups and treated to a heroes send-off, including crowds cheering and waving, a performance by a military band and speeches from dignitaries.

Signs held up by the crowd read: ”God bless WWII vets,î and ñ One last mission.î Then, the veterans board a plane for their all-expense-paid trip to the memorial in Washington D.C. For many it is their one and only chance to witness the tribute that was erected in their honor.

Dozens of veterans from throughout the

circulation area of Denton Publications have already taken advantage of the chance to see the memorial. A group flew out May 18 and another this past Saturday, June 8.

All say they relished the opportunity.

In a letter to the editor, WWII veteran Robert Savarie of Olmstedville said it was an incredibly emotional experience. ñ (It) was an emotional experience as memories of D-Day, Anzio, Battle of the Bulge, Midway, Guadalcanal, Okinawa and so many other battlefields were brought to mind,” he said.

Other veterans like William H. Thompson of Willsboro, Alfred Kurtz of Elizabethtown and Ralph Filion of Plattsburgh all said they were honored by the gesture made by North Country Honor Flight and the outpouring of support they received from members of the community.

Family members that accompanied the veterans had similar sentiments.

FilionÍ s daughter, Michelle Filion-Schon, drove to Plattsburgh from Pottstown, Pa., to join her father on the flight. ñ I think this could very well be the best day of both of our lives,î Filion-Schon said. ñ IÍ m so blessed to be there with him when he sees the memorial for the first time. This is the first time heÍ s ever been appreciated as a veteran.î LetÍ s hope it wonÍ t be his last.

Approximately 16 million men and women served in the U.S. military during WWII. By the time WWII ended in 1945, Nearly 420,000 United States soldiers lost their lives „ another 670,000 were wounded.

In the eight years it has been in existence, the national Honor Flight Network has transported more than 98,500 WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial. The program has 121 hubs in 41 states, including the North Country Honor Flight based in Keeseville.

The argument can certainly be made that no other war in our nation’s history was as influential in keeping our country, values and way of life intact as the Great Conflict.

We owe an immeasurable amount of gratitude to the men and women who fought in WWII to keep this nation free for this generation and more importantly for future generations.

But saying so is just lip service.

The people who volunteer their time to organizations like North Country Honor Flight are walking the walk.

Dunking booth aids literacy To the Times of Ti: Literacy Volunteers of Essex/Franklin Counties would like to acknowledge the support and generosity of Alex Bosarge, owner of Lakeside Heating & Plumbing located in Ticonderoga.

With help from Alex and his dedicated staff, Literacy Volunteers raised funds to support its adult literacy program by having a dunking booth at the Memorial Day celebration in Crown Point.

In addition to having his staff take a seat to support our organization, Lakeside Heating & Plumbing also matched of all funds raised that day.

We would also like to acknowledge those to sat in the dunking booth: DJ Alkinburgh, Geoffrey Burke, Greg Dodge and Bruce Peters.

Literacy VolunteersÍ mission to enable people over the age of 16 to achieve personal goals through student centered literacy tutoring. This year alone, Literacy Volunteers has supported more than 120 learners in our two-county service region, and have trained more than 30 community members to become volunteer tutors. Some of our adult learners want to be able assist their child with his/her homework, get or improve a current job, and some wish to obtain their GED so they can enroll in college programs.

With community support from businesses like Lakeside Heating & Plumbing, local residents have received the necessary assistance to improve their education, support themselves and their families, and become active community members. Thank you so much for your support, and may you and your business be an example for others (big or small) to learn from.

Pageant to return To the Times of Ti: The non-profit Royal Winter Pageant is back for its third year.

The last two years have been excellent and I hope to keep it going strong. This year the pageant will be for students who attend Putnam, Ticonderoga and St. MaryÍ s schools. Girls in grades 3-5, 6-8 and now 9-12 can participate. Three groups equals nine winners, great prizes, and lots of fun. The girls have to present themselves in a fancy dress, perform a group dance, perform a talent, and a few other requirements.

ItÍ s a great way to get your girls active and learning how to be responsible, dedicated and respectful young ladies. I hope to teach the girls to be involved in the local community and maybe local leaders some day. The first meeting and practices will begin in September 2013. An invitation will be coming home from the school so please keep a look out.

Trail celebration a success To the Times of Ti: ñ Trails are a tool to build a community that cares about natureî is how William Janeway, the Adirondack CouncilÍ s new executive director, began his talk at the Celebrate Champlain Area Trails event on June 1. Over 150 people attended the late afternoon festivities which concluded a busy National Trails Day. The day began with the IronOre Challenge at Cheney Mountain Trail hosted by the Moriah Chamber of Commerce and CATS. Then during a 1 p.m. hike, we unveiled the beautiful new interpretive signs at Black Kettle Nature Trail illustrated by Sheri Amsel and funded by a grant from the J.C. Kellogg Foundation.

This past year, I decided to pursue investigating one of Andy PowvorznikÍ s pet community projects. He wanted to restore one of our townÍ s most spectacular vistas.

The foaming tumbling waters leaving Lake George over a 200 feet drop in elevation on its way to Lake Champlain creates a most picturesque view that most towns could only hope for.

I realized that we would have to partner up with the hydro company that owns the property, but that should not be a big problem. We have already given up our community birthright claim to the generation of power from these waters; we should surely gain their cooperation in restoring our vista.

The town board could appoint a committee for the expressed purpose of revisiting one of our former councilmanÍ s dreams of creating a more beautiful and resourceful use of the upper Lachute Falls.

This committee would certain attract a host of volunteers. In fact, Tony Reale, Joe Michalak and others have already provided their expertise and advice.

Ad hoc committees like these are very important to our community and are disbanded after project completion.

These types of projects are ñ win-winî helping bring our community together for the common good without asking others to sacrifice.

Local leaders take stand against invasive aquatic species

katherine@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING Area politicians gathered June 7 at Rogers Memorial Park to show their support of proposed federal legislation aimed at curbing the introduction of invasive species into local waterways.

The legislation, called the Invasive Fish and Wildlife Protection Act, was unveiled during a press conference and boat-washing demonstration.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, a member of the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, and is co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh.

Gillibrand said there is no more serious problem to the preservation of area waterways than preventing new invasive species from getting into Lake George. ñT his funding is great news for Lake George,î Gillibrand said. ñW e are truly blessed as New Yorkers for our beautiful lakes.î Gillibrand went on to say that a threat to one lake is a threat to all bodies of water in the state and that new invasive species are being found at an alarming rate.

There are currently 236 animal species listed as invasive under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Lacey Act. The Lacey Act, a 112-year-old law, regulates invasive species and non-native species of animals and

prohibits their importation and interstate sale.

Currently listed under the Lacey Act are zebra mussels and several species of carp. Gillibrand said once a species is listed as injurious, it cannot be imported into the U.S. or its territories. Nevertheless, it can take up to four years for a specimen to be listed, giving invasive species more time to infiltrate New York’s waterways, potentially costing millions of dollars in damage. ñI n that time, the problem can grow to be out of control,ñ Gillibrand said. ñW e need to do what we can now to prevent future invasives that we donÍ t even know about from coming into our water.î The introduction of the proposed bill follows the announcement by state and local governments to fund two boat inspection and washing stations at boat launches on Lake George, bringing the total to three.

The new washing stations are being funded through an EPA grant of $50,000 to the Lake George Park Commission. Lake George will now have a total of three decontamination sites at its busiest boat launches: Rogers Rock State Campground in the town of Hague; Mossy Point State Boat Launch in the town of Ticonderoga; and Norowal Marina in Bolton Landing.

Since 2006, the DEC has spent $4.9 million on invasive species eradication across the state and $1.46 million was allocated to Lake George through the Lake George Park

Commission.

“With this investment, we will have a fighting chance to keep invasive species out of Lake George,î said Joan Leary Matthews, Director of the EPAÍ s Region 2 Clean Water Division.

Also in attendance to show support for the legislation was New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens, Lake George Mayor and S.A.V.E. Lake George Partnership Chairman Robert Blais, Executive Director of the Lake George Association Walt Lender and state Assemblyman Dan Stec, R-Queensbury.

Boat Washing

Following the press conference, Lake George Park Commission Boat Decontamination Specialist Doug Underhill gave a live demonstration of a typical boat washing that will be performed at the designated stations.

Underhill said launch attendees will rinse the entire boat using a pressure washer with 140-degree temperature water. ñWh en the water is above 140 degrees, it kills invasives species that might be carried on the boat,î Underhill said. ñI t wonÍ t cause any problems to the boat or the engine at that temperature.î ñT his isnÍ t just a problem in Lake George, but eventually this will probably be statewide,î Underhill said. ñI Í ve talked to people from Chester, Loon Lake, Brant Lake and it’s definitely something everyone is thinking about.î

Casino hopes dashed; agreement eliminates Essex County from discussions

Under an agreement reached May 21 between the State of New York and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the county, along with seven others, will not be eligible to house one of three new gaming casinos proposed earlier this year by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

With the agreement, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe will pay $30 million owed to the state along with 25 percent of future gaming revenues.

In return, the tribe will continue to have exclusive gaming rights in an eight county zone that includes Essex, Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Warren.

The agreement also initiates discussions between the state, the tribe and local governments to resolve unrelated land claim disputes. The two sides have been in disputes over gaming issues for the past three years. ñ ItÍ s not a huge disappointment here,î Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava, who pushed the discussion about gaming in Essex County, said. ñ We knew that this was going to be a long shot but hey, you had to try it.î The Moriah town board had passed a resolution formally asking the state to consider the community as a casino location.

Scozzafava said that while the deal ends the hopes of a county gaming facility, it is good news for the state as a whole. ñ IÍ m glad that the governor reached an accord with the St. Regis Tribe to get revenue that the state can use, which in the end could help everyone,î Scozzafava said. ñ He has done something that has not been done in a while by going in and bringing closure to this situation.î Still, Scozzafava said that there are other options that could present themselves. ñ I still want to pursue a riverboat-type operation on Lake Champlain,î he said. ñ It would be a huge draw for both New York and Vermont and any town that has a lake shore port area.

I know that there are still going to be a lot of hurdles with that as well, since you are dealing with federal waters and two states.î For now, the closest possibility for a gaming facility in the region could be in the town of Putnam, a Washington County town not under the agreement that was reached. Saratoga County, which currently is home to the Racino in Saratoga, would be the next regional site.

Port Henry home burns

PORT HENRY „ A historic Port Henry home was destroyed by fire June 10.

A 163-year-old home, formerly owned by Neil Anderson and now vacant, burned at the intersection of Broad and Stone streets. The fire was reported at 4:15 p.m. Officials termed the home a total loss.

Port Henry, Moriah, Mineville-Witherbee, Crown Point and Ticonderoga fire companies responded with the Moriah Ambulance Squad and police.

The Essex County Air One truck from Westport was called to refill firefighters’ air packs.

Investigators from the Essex County Fire Investigation Unit were at the fire attempting to determine the cause.

Anderson had lived in the wood-frame, two-and-a-half-story home for more than 30 years, but recently sold the property to Michael Mackin, who lives out-of-state.

Crown Point man pleads to manslaughter

CROWN POINT „ David Lang of Crown Point has admitted killing his brother as part of a plea agreement in Essex County Court.

Lang pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of his brother, Russell Lang. He had been charged with second-degree murder.

David Lang, 71, was set to go to trial on July 8.

David Lang The lesser charge carries a minimum of five years and a maximum of 25 years in prison. ñ This is a very reasonable and fair disposition in this case in light of the circumstances of the case and the defendantÍ s lack of criminal history and age,î District Attorney Kristy Sprague said. ñ I met with his family members some time ago and discussed the disposition of a plea and they were very amenable to putting this

to rest without a lot of public display.

“It’s a very difficult situation when one family member takes the life of another,î Sprague continued. ñ They didnÍ t just lose one brother that day, they lost both brothers. This plea will allow the family to try and now find some closure.”

As part of the plea deal Lang waives his right to an appeal David Lang shot his brother Russell Lang in the head on June 19, 2012, following an arguement at the farmhouse they shared at 325 Lake Road in Crown Point.

Russell Lang, 63, was found in the driveway and was taken to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga in critical condition.

He was transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, where he died on June 20.

Sentencing is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Aug. 8, pending a presentencing report.

Judge Richard Meyer has agreed to a sentence of no less tha 10 years and no more than 15 years with five years of probation, Sprague said.

Crown Point man arrested

A Crown Point man was arrested on weapon possession and sale charges by Ticonderoga police June 5.

Andrew D. Burrows, 21, was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a firearm and third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, both felonies, police said.

He was arraigned in Ticonderoga Town Court and was sent to Essex County Jail for lack of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

Schroon drug arrest

A Bronx man was arrested on drug charges after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 87 in the Town of Schroon June 7.

At approximately 3:21 p.m. a High Peaks-based state trooper clocked a 1999 Chrysler Concorde bearing New Jersey registration speeding 82 mph in a 65 mph zone. The northbound vehicle was stopped, and the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Edward M. Rodriguez, 29, of the Bronx.

Rodriguez was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance third degree, criminal possession of stolen property fourth degree and other vehicle and traffic charges. He was arraigned in the Town of Schroon Court before Town Justice Jean Strothenke and committed to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 cash bail.

Church to recognize members

CROWN POINT „ The friends and members of First Congregational Church of Crown Point will conduct a Service of Recognition Sunday, June 16, at the 9:30 a.m. service.

Included in this service will be Jake Mildon, a candidate for Boy ScoutingÍ s highest honor, the Eagle Award. Part of the requirement of the award is a community-based service project.

Mildon choose to focus his efforts on the historic cemetery located behind First Congregational Church.

Mildon researched the project, planned and organized what would be three days of preparation, excavation and repair of over 106 broken, fallen or missing stones (family markers). He oversaw a group of 10-15 volunteers who worked to complete the project.

Sunday will also see official recognition of five parish members who have marked a milestone in their lives by graduation from college and high school.

Carl Jakowenko has completed and graduated a four-year course as a physical therapist assistant. He is looking for placement in his field and considering many options.

Crystal Thompson McLaughlin completed and graduated a two-year registered nursing program at North Country Community College. She and her family live in Port Henry and she is currently working at Heritage Commons at Moses Ludington Hospital.

Alexandra Macey will graduate from Crown Point Central School. She will enter Johnson (Vt.) State University in the fall.

Michaela Comes will graduate from CPCS as salutatorian. She will attend enter Cazenovia College in the fall.

Charles Stevens will graduate from CPCS and is weighing his options for his future.

Special Recognition will me made to Kyle James and Dimitri Duval for completing the semester in church school.

Mollie Mae Ingleston and Dylan James will be honored and confirmed for completing the requirements for Confirmation.

A fellowship hour will be held following the service to allow all in attendance an opportunity to congratulated each honoree.

SCHROON LAKE „ A historic cemetery in need of assistance is now the responsibility of Schroon taxpayers.

The Protestant Cemetery on Hoffman Road has formally been abandoned. ñ The town is now legally obligated to take care of it,î Schroon Supervisor Mike Marnell said. ñ The Protestant Cemetery Association came to us (town officials) and said they just canÍ t care for it anymore. It now belongs to the town.î Schroon has no choice but to accept ownership of the cemetery and care for it. State law states all abandoned cemeteries become the responsibility of the town in which they are placed.

The 10-acre Protestant Cemetery in Schroon has reached capacity and no longer accepts burials, Marnell noted. That, along with an aging cemetery association membership, led to the abandonment. ñ The (cemetery) board has done the best they can, but they just canÍ t care for it any longer,î Marnell said. ñ I donÍ t think anything has been done here for years, except mowing the grass once in a while.î When the Protestant Cemetery Association ceased to exist, itÍ s $24,000 went to the

town for care of the cemetery. Marnell appreciates that, but said the cost to replace fencing, re-set grave stones and top soil and re-seed the cemetery will far exceed the $24,000. Since Schroon officials didn’t anticipate taking ownership of the land, there is no money in the town budget for its care.

A 150-year-old iron fence that borders the cemetery is already being replaced. It cost $12,000 to replace 250 feet with aluminum fence. That leaves another 400 feet to go. ñ And there are a lot of stones that have been damaged by falling trees and age,î Marnell said. ñ They need to be re-set. ThereÍ s a lot of work to be done. Then thereÍ s maintenance. It needs to be mowed and looked after.î The supervisor is hoping volunteers will step up to help out. ñ Probably everyone in town has a family

ñ Obviously, weÍ re pleased and honored,î Bob said of the selection. ñ It means a great deal to us.î Bob grew up in Schroon Lake, graduating from Schroon Lake Central School before moving away. When the couple, both teachers, retired in 1993 they returned to the community. ñ Schroon Lake is a beautiful place, but itÍ s the people who make it special,î Bob said. ñ We think itÍ s a special place. The folks are very nice.î As Schroon Lake Citizens of the Year the Clauses will serve as grand marshals of the communityÍ s July 4th parade this summer. ñ IÍ ve walked in the parade many years, itÍ ll be nice to ride,î Jane quipped.

The couple is currently helping prepare four Schroon Lake students to perform in a Seagle Colony production this summer. Then theyÍ ll look for another project. ñ We like to stay involved in the community,î Jane said. ñ I think weÍ ll just keep doing the things weÍ ve been doing. ItÍ s great to think weÍ re appreciated by the people of Schroon Lake.

Improvements needed at Protestant Cemetery

Schroon chamber has sought citizen of the year nominations from the community. The chamber board then makes a selection. ñ The chamber of commerce will be recognizing the significant contributions that Bob and Jane have made to our community and area for many years,î the chamber board said in a prepared statement. ñ They are very dedicated people that have been involved with the Schroon Lake Library, Seagle Music Colony, various music concerts, the bicentennial events, the Schroon Lake Central School and the broadband committee to mention just a few of the many activities and organizations.î The couple have also been active in the Schroon Lake Arts Council, the local fire department, the emergency squad, the fire auxiliary, the town zoning board and the Paradox Lake Association. ñ IÍ m very surprised,î Jane said of the honor. ñ WeÍ ve been involved in a lot of different groups. Lately our time has been filled up by family. This is very nice.î The couple has six children and 13 grandchildren.

“Once we get this fixed up I don’t believe maintenance will be much of a problem,î Marnell said.

Schroon is also responsible for four other abandoned cemeteries „ the Baker Street Cemetery, the South Schroon Cemetery and two unnamed cemeteries located off Hoffman and Youngs roads.

In New York State, about 160 cemeteries have been abandoned since 1990, according to the New York State Association of Cemeteries.

Zachary Pratt, son of Steven and Karen Pratt of Ticonderoga, graduated from the University of Iowa School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree on May 17.

While at the University of Iowa, he was a member of the Zachary Pratt Intellectual Property Law Society and served as co-president of the Sports Law Society.

Zach interned with the Intellectual Properties Firm of Lambert and Associates in Boston during the summer of 2011, and with New Hampshire Legal Aid in Manchester, N.H., during the summer of 2012.

He will be employed by the Intellectual Property Firm of Shumaker and Seiffert of St. Paul, Minn., in August.

Pratt is a 2006 graduate of Ticonderoga High School and a 2010 graduate of St MichaelÍ s College in Colchester, Vt.

Returning from his year of studies in the country of Hungary, Jared Bolstridge a graduate of North Country Community College, will serve for the summer at Cornerstone Alliance Church in Ticonderoga. He graduated from Word of Life Hungary, an international school, with a one year Biblical studies diploma.

Among some of his responsibilities will be leading the Sunday night church Jared Bolstridge youth program, assisting and learning from the pastor, doing work projects, coordination of summer programs and starting a new college and career group.

Ti hurdler wins state championship Hebert defends title; heads to nationals

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA „ Jay Hebert is again a state champion.

The Ticonderoga High School athlete won the Division II (small school) championship in the 110-meter hurdles at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet in Middletown June 8.

Hebert won the outdoor state and Federation 110-meter hurdle crowns last spring as a sophomore. The Ticonderoga High School hurdler also won a pair of state titles at this yearÍ s New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track championships March 2. ñ IÍ m a little disappointed I didnÍ t win the Federation race,î Hebert said of the 2013 state meet, ñ but overall I think it was a good meet. I did the best I could.î Hebert was clocked in 14.33 seconds to win the NYSPHAA title. He was second in the Federation race, running a personalbest 14.04 seconds. He was beaten by 9/100s of a second by ConnetquotÍ s John Stallworth.

The NYSPHAA includes all the stateÍ s public schools while the Federation includes both public and private schools.

In the Federation race Hebert hit the seventh hurdle. His coach, Walter Thorne, believes that may have cost him the race. ñ Jay had a fantastic meet,î Thorne said. ñ He won the Division II championship and set a PR. It was a great meet.î While disappointed he didnÍ t win the Federation crown, Hebert was pleased with his 14.04 time. His previous best was 14.07. ñ I knew Stallworth was going to be tough to beat, that IÍ d have to run my best,” Hebert said of the photo finish. “Of course, he was probably thinking the same thing. It was a great race; I knew he had me at the end.î There was no such suspense in the NYSPHAA race, Hebert claimed the state championship easily.

Hebert also joined with fellow Sentinels Marcus Moser, Coleman Granger and Justyn Granger to run the 400-meter relay at the state meet. The team finished 12th in 45.53 seconds. That was a PR for the quintet, who had run 45.54 earlier in the season.

The meet was tough on athletes who had to deal with a weather issue. Normally a two-day meet, FridayÍ s events were postponed and the entire meet was squeezed into Saturday because

It’s his second straight state title in the event. of Tropical Storm Andrea. ñ It was a long day,î Hebert said. ñ We had to be there early and didn’t finish until late. People had to run, then sit, and then run and then wait some more.î The high school season is done, but Hebert has one more meet.

HeÍ s in Greensboro, N.C., this weekend for the New Balance National Outdoor Championships.

A year ago Hebert competed in the ñ emerging eliteî division

of the event and was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the 110 hurdles.

Now a junior, Hebert has moved up the ñ championship eliteî class and will compete against the best hurdlers in the country. ñ I hope to make it out of the preliminaries this year,î Hebert said. “I’d like to get to the semifinals and see what can do. Running again people in the 13s (seconds) will hopefully pull me along to a good time.î

Ticonderoga eliminated Ticonderoga dropped a 10-3 decision to Voorheesville in the opening round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C baseball tournament June 4.

The Sentinels grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Miles Austin was awarded home on a runner interference call by umpires.

Kristian Singh ripped a three-run double to give Voorheesville a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. In the fourth Voorheesville added four more runs, capitalizing on four walks and two passed balls.

Mark Donohue and Ty Denno drove home runs for the Sentinels in the sixth inning, but Ti never got any closer.

Jordan Woods had two hits and drove home a run for Ti. Ticonderoga finished the season with a 12-8 record.

Crown Point’s Alex Macey was almost as tough, firing a nine-hitter and allowing just one earned run. She fanned three batters.

Fort Ann scored in the second inning when Kimmi Ostrander singled and scored following a pair of Panther errors. Ostrander then singled home a run in the fourth inning.

The loss ended a sterling season for the Panthers, who posted a 15-1 mark.

Montcalm Mile on tap in Ticonderoga July 4th Fastest course in the North Country

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA „ The LaChute Road Runners Club of Ticonderoga has long believed the Montcalm Mile is the fastest course in the North Country.

A year ago Lee Berube proved it, becoming the first runner to ever break 4 minutes in the region. The college All-American and NCAA Division III cross country runner-up was clocked in 3 minutes, 54 seconds.

Runners looking for a mile PR will get another chance when the 2013 Montcalm Mile is run Thursday, July 4, as part of TiconderogaÍ s Best Fourth in the North celebration.

The 27th annual Montcalm Mile will start at 1:45 p.m., just

prior to the 2 p.m. July 4th parade, in front of Wicker Ford on Wicker Street and proceed down Montcalm Street to the finish at the Heritage Museum.

A record field of more than 200 runners competed in the 2012 Montcalm Mile. There were 17 runners who broke 5:00.

Berube’s 3:54 is the course record for men. The women’s record is 4:41 held by Dana Bush.

ItÍ s a downhill course that virtually assures runners of personal bests and attracts most of the regionÍ s top athletes. Also attracting runners is the fact the race is run minutes prior to TiconderogaÍ s annual Fourth of July parade, which means hundreds of spectators line the course offering encouragement.

Girls learn life lessons on the run

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA „ About 75 elementary school girls learned an important lesson recently. They can set goals and achieve them.

Girls from Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Moriah and Willsboro came to TiÍ s Bicenentennial Park June 1 to complete a 3-kilometer run. It was the culmination of the ñ Accept & Appreciate Meî program held at area schools this spring.

The program, sponsored by the Prevention Team, is based on the national Girls on the Run effort.

ItÍ s a physical activity-based youth development program for girls, according to Angie MacAlpine of the Prevention Team. It teaches life skills through interactive lessons and running games. The goal of the program is to build

confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. ñ The girls program that we are using is modeled after the Girls on the Run program that we were involved in last year,î MacAlpine said. ñ Unfortunately, last yearÍ s sponsor, Glens Falls Hospital, was unable to sponsor the program this year. So, the Prevention Team developed a program similar to GOTR for the girls this year.

That program is called ï Accept & Appreciate MeÍ . ñ Girls have been involved in the program since March while meeting once or twice a week for discussions of various topics to learn important skills, healthy choices, how to resolve conflicts,” MacAlpine said. “It also includes running workouts.î ñ Accept & Appreciate Meî concluded when fourth and fifth grade girls met in Bicentennial Park.
