The 25th annual Old Tyme Christmas celebration was held in Schroon Lake Dec. 11. Sponsored by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, it featured a concert by Schroon Lake Central School students, the lighting of the community Christmas tree, a Living Nativity Walk, the arrival of Santa, a Christmas movie, local performers throughout the evening, refreshments at the Schroon Lake Senior Center., children’s crafts and activities, and horse and carriage rides.

Caroling planned in Schroon Lake Mountainside Bible Chapel members will lead community caroling on Sunday, Dec. 19.

Carolers are asked to meet at 4 p.m. the Schroon Lake fire house. Carolers will return to the fire house at 5:30 p.m. for supper. For more information call 5327128.

Kiwanis, Ti students join to ‘stuff a bus’ Project assists Ti Food Pantry TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Kiwanis Club, Ti High School Key Club and Ti school staff teamed up to help the needy by collecting food to “stuff a bus” and to fill the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle recently.

Together they worked at Walmart to fill the bus with food items and collect donations that filled the red bucket to the top.

The food items were then delivered to the local food pantry and the money collected given to the Salvation Army.

In addition the Key Club raised over $380 in cash to donate to the food pantry.

All donations and food items will be distributed locally.

The drive took place in front of Walmart, whose support made this all possible.

Gibbs is retiring from the Tiny Tim program after 20 years.

“I almost didn’t do it last year,” Gibbs said. “Ann Dedrick talked me into it, but it’s getting harder and harder for me.”

Gibbs, who had major surgery in the past year, has passed the torch to Nancy Quesnel.

The Tiny Tim program started in 1980 when a group of Ticonderoga Central School teachers realized the need. The program grew to the point the teachers could no longer handle the demand.

“In January of 1989 there was an article in the Times

of Ti that the program was disbanding,” Gibbs recalled.

“They just couldn’t do it any more; it had gotten too expensive.

“It really bothered me when I thought about it, that there were so many kids who needed things,” she continued. “I made a call to see if I could help.”

She became Tiny Tim chairwoman in 1995.

There have been a lot of changes during the years.

Tiny Tim no longer accepts or distributes used items and gifts are no longer wrapped.

And, Tiny Tim has grown.

It started out giving away winter coats. Now each

child gets six pair of socks, six sets of underwear, a jacket, ski pants, boots, clothing and toys.

Tiny Tim now serves about 75 families and nearly 200 children each holiday season.

It costs more than $6,000 a year to operate the Tiny Tim program, Gibbs said.

The confidential program decides who gets holiday help using the school’s free and reduced lunch income guidelines, Gibbs explained.

Parents must complete applications. That application includes questions about the children in the homes, such as clothing sizes and gender.

TICONDEROGA — Frank Lasch of Kattskill Bay and Loudonville has been appointed to the board of directors of the Lake George Association.

Lasch’s first view of Lake George occurred in 1947 and he remembers it was “so clear you could spot a dime in 10 feet of water, but I’ve watched the Lake deteriorate since then,” he said. He has traveled extensively and has yet to find a more beautiful lake, or one so worthy of protection, he said.

Lasch has also served as president of the Lake George Club and the Fort Orange Club in Albany. He received his law degree from Cornell University Law School.

Wesley Masten enjoys the annual Kiwanis-Ticonderoga Central School District senior citizen holiday party in the elementary-middle school cafeteria. Sponsored by the local Kiwanis and the Ti school district, the Ticonderoga holiday party featured a turkey dinner and entertainment provided by students musicians. Dinner was served by high school honor students with table placemats and decorations made by elementary children.

Ti student returns from African adventure TICONDEROGA — Emily Palmer, a junior at St. Lawrence University, has been studying abroad this semester in Kenya.

The Ticonderoga resident left New York in August, stopping over in London, where she was able to take in some of the sites. She then flew into Nairobi and traveled to the St. Lawrence Study Center in the town of Karen, eight miles outside of Nairobi.

Karen is named after Karen Blixen (aka Isak Dinesen), a Danish woman who managed a coffee plantation there and who was portrayed in the film “Out of Africa.” The St. Lawrence compound in Karen is comprised of dorms, living spaces, dining room, kitchen, study area and a library and is the home base for the twenty students who are studying abroad. Palmer shared her room with a student from Middlebury College. In skype sessions, the mosquito netting surrounding their beds could be seen—a necessity, espe-

Palmer ‘s semester abroad is an interdisciplinary seminar that helps students absorb, analyze and synthesize the diverse perspectives on the people of Kenya and issues to which they are exposed. Classes in Swahili are part of the core curriculum, and in Palmer ’s case, adds to the semester of Swahili that she took as a freshman at St. Lawrence. Other courses address culture, environEmily Palmer ment and development in East Africa. A rural component of Palmer ’s coursework focused on family relationships, socio-cultural and development aspects of a farming community and included the impact of modern education and belief systems, natural resources, land use and subsistence strategies, handicrafts and local markets.

Palmer spent a week with her rural host family, learning about and participating in, the activities of daily life in this area. Among other activities, she worked in the fields along with family members and helped with cooking.

Two extended field components followed her rural homestay. The first was in Tanzania, which emphasized issues of environment and development affecting the livelihood of the Hazda, who live in the Yaeda Valley. They are one of the few people still practicing hunting and gathering, and number less than one thousand. The Hazda taught Palmer and the other students various skills associated with their hunter-gathering lifestyle and the students accompanied the women in a foraging trip and the men in a game hunting trip. The focus of this portion of the semester was the causes and consequences of the changes to the culture brought about by marginalization by the Tanzanian government, globalization, development and competition over land and natural resources by other tribes.

The second field component took place in Amboseli and was dedicated to the socio-economic, environmental and development factors affecting the culture of the agro-pastoral Maasai, whose pure nomadic pastoralist lifestyle has changed to semi-sedentary mixed agro-pastoralism in the region. Conflicts between the Maasai, non-Maasai farmers, livestock and wildlife over land, water, pasture, and natural resources were studied as well as gender roles, development and social changes affecting the day-to-day lives of the Maasai people. As part of this component, Emily spent two

days in a traditional Maasai home.

While the students attended classes in Nairobi, they spent three weeks in an urban homestay. The family that Palmer stayed with had a father in the Kenyan military, who was away during the week, but home with his family on weekends. Trips to various venues in the city included attending a soccer game at Nyayo National Stadium, which Palmer said was “really crazy. People were climbing on high tension wires to see the game.” A few weeks later, when news reached Palmer ’s mother that seven people were trampled to death in a stampede at a soccer stadium in Nairobi, she made a point of asking her daughter about it. It was the same stadium that Palmer had been at previously. Other events that Palmer attended and which serve as proof of Kenya’s rapidly growing cities included a fashion show and a bead-making factory.

A mid-semester break, originally planned to be a time when the students could go their own ways and explore was cancelled due to safety reasons and, instead, they went as a group to Mombasa, where they spent four days on the coast at the beach.

The final component of the semester is an independent field study in an area of interest to the students. Emily was chosen to do research at the Colobus Trust in Diani Beach, Kenya, on the coast of the Indian Ocean. The trust is dedicated to the conservation, preservation, and protection of primates, particularly the Angolan Colobus monkey and its coastal forest habitat in southern Kenya. Problems have occurred with injuries or electrocution of the monkeys who live primarily in the canopy and who unexpectedly come into contact with high tension wires. To rectify the situation, brush is continually cut back away from the wires and ‘colobridges’ are being built to encourage their use instead of the usual movement from tree to tree near the wires. Emily’s research is based on examining the skull structures and dentition of the various varieties of Colobus monkeys.

Of the many experiences Palmer had while in Kenya, she laughed while telling her family about sitting down for lunch on one of their day trips only to have a monkey jump out of a nearby tree and grab her lunch bag. She reacted quickly and grabbed the bag, too, hoping the monkey would give up, but to no avail. It hung on tightly and even with Palmer yelling at it, it persisted to try to steal her food. It finally let go of the bag.

For the first several months in Kenya, Palmer said that she was cold, even during the day—surprising for being one degree above the equator. As of late, with summer, she said that she was no longer cold and that the temperature was about one hundred degrees and very humid. Having the beach in the trust’s backyard was handy.

Palmer returned to St. Lawrence earlier this month and will be in Ticonderoga for Christmas. She will continue her studies at St. Lawrence in January.

TICONDEROGA — The sounds of the season filled the Ticonderoga Elementary School auditorium as students presented their annual holiday concert for family and friends.

The program featured the fifth grade band under the direction of Michael Iturrino and the elementary chorus directed by Wayne Chagnon.

Councilman disputes report To the Times of Ti: I would like to correct some statements made in the Nov. 6, 2010, Times of Ti article titled “Crown Point Taxpayers Could See Tax Decrease.”

The State of New York will not be able to give Crown Point residents a tax decrease in 2011. The State of New York does not owe Crown Point $60,000. We have already received a check in the amount of $75,474 in 2010. This was budgeted for and it will have no impact on the 2011 tax rate. The 2011 preliminary budget includes a reimbursement from the state of $60,000. When the budget is adopt-

ed prior to Nov. 20, 2010, the tax rate for 2011 will be set. If we don’t receive the state reimbursement in 2011 it won’t affect the taxes that people pay in January 2011.

Health insurance premiums projected by Burnham Financial for the employee plans we will have in 2011 have increased 7.5 percent. The town’s cost for 2011 will be 6.7 percent higher than the 2010 budgeted amount.

The town of Crown Point has nine full-time employees. Eleven full-time, part-time and elected employees get insurance through the town. Seven full-time employees get their insur-

ance paid 100 percent by the town.

For four elected and part-time employees the town pays 100 percent of the employees’ single plan. If they choose a different plan the employee pays half the difference in cost of the single plan and that plan.

This grandfather writes to thank the good people at the Ti fire house for the Thanksgiving Day dinner that my grandson and I enjoyed.

I volunteered to drive grandson Mike up from our hometown of Portland, Conn., for a weekend of whitetail deer hunting.

Finding ourselves wanting for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, Belle, who waited on us at dinner at the (Hot Biscuit) Diner the night before, told us about this annual event at the fire house. Her enthusiastic invitation was reinforced by the electronic sign at Liberty Circle that blinked its welcome.

So warmly welcomed were we when we showed up for the noon meal that we felt right at home with those who shared our table. The camaraderie and meal so exceeded our expectations that we returned for left-overs at 5 p.m.!

Thank you, good people of Ticonderoga, for granting us a Thanksgiving experience that will be long remembered.

Putnam school board to meet

Moriah offices to close for holiday

PUTNAM — The Putnam Central School board of education will meet Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the school.

PORT HENRY — The Moriah town offices will close for the Christmas holiday at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23, and will reopen on Monday, Dec. 27. Offices will also close on Friday Dec. 31, and reopen on Monday Jan. 3, in observance of the New Year.

Children’s celebration slated PUTNAM — The Putnam United Presbyterian Church will host a Children’s Celebration of Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 9 a.m.

There will be gingerbread house decorating, bubbles in winter, the Christmas story and crafts for children ages 512. Snacks will be provided.

Snow removal help requested PORT HENRY — The chief of the Port Henry Fire Department has asked residents to “Adopt a Fire Hydrant” this winter and keep it clear from snow and ice in the event of an emergency.

The village of Port Henry is requesting that residents help in keeping sidewalks free from snow this winter after they have been cleared by the village by removing any additional snow that lands on the sidewalks as a result of clearing rooftops.

PORT HENRY — The Port Henry Fire Department will have its annual Santa Claus Run on Sunday, Dec. 19, beginning at noon. Santa Claus, escorted by his Fireman Elves, will deliver candy to all the good girls and boys within the village of Port Henry.

Super being investigated

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Crown Point Supervisor Bethany Kosmider is seeking to halt an investigation of the business dealings of herself and her husband by district attorney offices in Essex and Clinton counties.

According to court filings, Kosmider and her husband, Edward, are seeking the suppression of bank records obtained during an ongoing investigation that could be used to secure a criminal indictment by a grand jury.

The Kosmiders are suing Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague, her predecessor Julie Garcia, Essex County, Assistant District Attorney Michael Langey and special prosecutor and Clinton County Assistant District Attorney Timothy Blatchley in Essex County Supreme Court.

Albany Attorney Michael RhodesDevey is representing the counties and officials in the proceeding.

Bethany Kosmider “By law, grand jury proceedings are secret,” he said. “I can’t comment on this.”

The Crown Point Democrat and her husband own and operate a construction business. Sources close to the case said the Essex County District Attorney’s first began subpoenaing the Kosmiders’ bank records two years ago under Garcia. The investigation followed allegations that the

couple’s construction company didn’t render services for which it was paid.

Bethany Kosmider won a 2009 bid for town of Crown Point supervisor.

She defeated longtime incumbent Dale French.

The investigation had continued under Sprague until a special prosecutor was recently appointed by State Supreme Court Justice Richard Meyer to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

Kosmider serves on the Essex County Board of Supervisors which has legislative power over much of Sprague’s day-to-day funding levels.

Kosmider and Sprague both declined comment.

The suit alleges that prosecutors illegally seized the records infringing on the Kosmiders’ constitutional rights because the documents were seized before a grand jury was convened.

The parties are scheduled to appear in Essex County State Supreme Court Jan. 6.

Siver Family to perform at holiday program

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — A community Christmas program will be held in Crown Point.

The Siver Family Christmas Show will be Sunday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. in at the First Congregational Church located in the town

park.

The program will be presented by the Crown Point Events Committee, the church and the Siver Family Bluegrass Band.

“On behalf of the First Congregational Church, The Siver Family, and the Crown Point Events Committee, we send out this open invitation to attend this joyous event

as we celebrate this wonderful Christmas season,” said the Rev. David Hirtle of the church. “Come sing, come listen, but most of all, please come.”

The program will feature a “Bluegrass Christmas” presentation filled with traditional Christmas songs.

The Siver family band hails from Crown Point and has

been traveling around the Northeast performing at various bluegrass festivals and private venues for the last two years.

The show is free, but there will be an opportunity to give an offering gift, which will be donated to the Ti/Crown Point Clergy Association’s Emergency Fund. The fund benefits

those who need food, heat and additional assistance.

Following the program, the church and events committee will serve hot apple cider, hot chocolate and refreshments prior to inviting everyone to carol around the park.

“All are welcome to join us,” Hirtle said.

Moriah students tackle ancient Greek Retired professor teaches after-school program

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — It’s all Greek to Levo Freeman. Which is fine with the Moriah Central School senior.

“It’s so cool,” said Freeman, who is part of the Ancient Greek Study Group at the school. “We’re learning things that will help us in college and the rest of our lives.”

The study group, under the tutelage of John Roemischer, is learning the ancient Greek language and culture.

“This is helping us learn higher level vocabulary,” said Dylan Scozzafava, a Moriah freshman. “As we get into more sophisticated learning we see the advantages of knowing Greek. Much of our language comes from Greek.”

English is a hybrid language, Roemischer explained.

About a quarter of the English language has its roots in Greek with about half coming from latin and the remainder from Saxonian/German tongues.

“In geometry we see the word perimeter and find that the Greek meaning is to ‘measure around” or ‘enclose’ an object,” Roemischer said. “Periscope, peristalsis, periphery and many other English terms beginning with the letters pe-r-i are rooted in this same term. Many terms in the sciences are rooted in Greek.”

The study group includes five Moriah students and one from Westport. Freeman, Scozzafava, Jonathan Brassard, Cole Gaddor and Kyle Gifaldi are from Moriah. Scarlette Moore is from Westport.

“They are the most brilliant students in their schools,” Roemischer smiled. “I greatly enjoy my time with them.”

The study group meets once a week for an hour. Students get no school credit. Roemischer gets no pay. But there are benefits.

“College-bound students headed for the SAT examination in English would, at the very least, come better prepared for the vocabulary questions,” Roemischer said. “Besides, we have fun.”

Roemischer is a retired professor at the City College of New York. He has lived in Westport the past 40 years, spending 19 years commuting to his job in New York City. Since retiring he has also worked at SUNY-Plattsburgh.

Roemischer began working with Moore. One day he visited his daughter who was then teaching math at Moriah.

“Her students asked me to help with their algebra and I couldn’t,” he said. “But I them them I could teach them Greek. I was surprised when some said they wanted to learn.”

The study group has forced Roemischer, now 81 years old, to again hit the books.

“It’s been 60 years since I studied Greek, so I’ve had to do a lot of review,” he said. “The kids have actually taught me a lot. I work at this just like they do.

“I love these kids,” he smiled. “They tolerate me.”

The students do more than tolerate their instructor.

“A lot of people aren’t lucky enough to have someone like Mr. Roemischer in their life,” Freeman said. “We’re lucky and blessed to have him.”

Roemischer said the study group is fun and its fulfills a need.

“When you get older you should contribute something to the lives of younger people,” he said. “What good is my experience If I die without sharing it?”

Besides teaching Greek, Roemischer is now working on a paper studying the concepts of violence in the Old and New Testaments that he plans to present at Oxford University in England and then have published. Moore is helping him with his research.

“She will likely be the youngest Westport student ever to be published in a scholarly journal,” Roemischer remarked.

Moriah tops Panthers; Ticonderoga defeated Moriah raced to a big lead and beat Crown Point, 60-25, in boys basketball play Dec. 8.

The Vikings rolled to a 22-4 lead and held a 36-13 advantage at the intermission. Moriah then crushed any Panther comeback hopes with a 20-7 run to start the second half.

Isaac Aponte scored 17 points to pace the Viking attack. Derek Brassard added 10 points for the winners.

Wildcats post win; Ti, Moriah toppled Schroon Lake rallied to defeat Willsboro, 40-35, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference girls basketball action Dec. 9.

The Wildcats got off to a slow start, failing to score in the first quarter.

They then started to chip away.

Trailing by four points at the intermission, Schroon started the second half with an 8-3 run to grab the lead, 19-18. The ‘Cats then closed the game with a 21-17 spurt to secure the win — despite playing the final two minutes with just four players because of foul trouble.

Jocelyn Bowen, a reigning MVAC division Most Valuable Player, scored 21 points to pace Schroon Lake. Katelyn Rose added 13 for the winners.

A technical foul proved costly for Crown Point as it lost to Chazy, 31-29, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action Dec. 10.

The score was tied, 29-29, with seven seconds remaining when the Panthers drew a T. Chazy’s John Tregan hit the two technical free throws for the win.

The lost spoiled a big comeback for the Panthers, who trailed by eight points in the closing minutes before rallying to tie and have possession with a chance to win.

Nathan tabor had 17 points and Mike Gould hauled down 19 rebounds for Crown Point.

Essex County taxes to increase

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County Board of Supervisors cut another 1.3 percent from the projected 2011 tax hike during a special meeting Dec. 7 – but like their colleagues in Franklin County, supervisors decided not to use additional fund balance to buy down the tax levy.

The board unanimously adopted the $99 million county budget, which features an 8.62 percent tax increase in 2010 and boasts one of the lowest tax rates in the state at just $2.15 per thousand dollars of assessed value.

The budget will apply $7 million in excess cash to buy down the $22 million tax levy. But Finance Committee Chairman Tom Scozzafava wanted to apply an additional $500,000 of fund balance – a move that would have dropped the hike to about 5 percent.

And County Chairman Randy Douglas – who has sat on the fence about the controversial policy issue – thought it wasn’t a bad idea.

“It was a hard decision to make, but I felt cutting it down from 8.6 to around 4.5 was something I thought was in the best interest of the taxpayers,” he said.

But 11 of the 16 supervisors present sided with County Manager Dan Palmer, who has repeatedly argued that draining the fund balance any further could have devastating results in 2012.

Elizabethtown Supervisor Noel Merrihew expressed the sentiments of the vast majority of his peers.

“By looking at the contiguous counties around us – we’re all in the same business, we provide the same services – our tax rate is artificially low,” he said. “I just think that a little bit of an increase in that tax rate will make our lives easier next year.”

The Essex County tax rate is half that of its neighbors. If the additional fund balance were applied, only seven cents per thousand would have been carved from the tax rate.

At the beginning of the five-hour marathon meeting of the full county board, the 2011 budget had a 9.6 percent tax hike.

“I’ve been beaten on this one,” Scozzafava said afterward.

An additional $175,000 in state grant revenue for the county Transportation Department trimmed taxes even further.

For weeks, supervisors have scratched and clawed to get a once 30 percent tax hike below 10 percent.

And Douglas is pleased with the results following countless hours of arguing and number-crunching.

Jane (Ventura) Hamilton July 10, 1923 - Nov. 26, 2010 SCHROON LAKE — Jane Hamilton, 87, of Schroon Lake, NY, passed away Nov. 26, 2010, at the Kaplan Family Hospice of Danvers, Mass., of complications of Alzheimers.

Born in Fall River, Mass., in 1923 to the late John and Emma Ventura. Jane moved to New York City upon graduating high school to study art at the Traphagen School of Art. She lived with her older sisters who were in nurses training.

While at Traphagen she was one of three students chosen to design costumes for a play on Broadway starring Lillian Gish.

While in New York she met her soon to be husband James Hamilton stationed in New York with the Navy. They married in the late 1940s and settled in Beachurst, NY. Jane worked on Seventh Avenue in the fashion industry for many years in New York City designing women’s sportswear. Jane and Jim eventually settled on Long Island where they raised their two boys, Dean and Gary.

In the late 1960s they purchased a summer cottage on the East Shore of Schroon Lake. They spent many summers and winters at the cottage during the coming years.

Continuing her interest in the arts Jane became an accomplished watercolorist. She studied with numerous artists on Long Island and began showing her work throughout the Adirondacks in various galleries, including Essex, Glens Falls, Lake Placid as well as Vermont. She was a regular at the Schroon Lake Fair for many years.

She was a long time member of the Adirondack Art Association and the Rockport Mass Art Association.

She enjoyed visiting her son Gary and daughter-in-law Laura in their home on the Massachusetts coast, which gave her much subject matter to work from. She also enjoyed painting with her sister Emmy Coppersmith; the girls would show their works at Guild Hall in Easthampton where her sister owns a summer home.

In the late 1970s Jan and Jim retired to a year round house on Dock Street in Schroon Lake. Jane continued her artwork and shows throughout the region until just recently.

She is survived by a son, Gary and daughter-in-law Laura and grandchildren Elizabeth and Stephen of Ipswich, Mass., sisters Florence DiMao of New York and Emmy Coppersmith of Florida, many nieces and nephews and many long time friends. She was predeceased by a son Dean in 2008 and her husband Jim in 2010.

Donations can be made to the Kaplan Family Hospice of Danvers, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, Pastor, officiated.

The Rite of Committal followed at the family plot of St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga.

CROWN POINT — Yvonne Elizabeth (Peeters) King, 42, of Crown Point, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at the Moses-Ludington Hospital of Ticonderoga.

Born in Ticonderoga, New York, on Jan. 17, 1968, she was the daughter of the late Coenrardus Peeters and Constance (Peters) Peeters, who survives her, of Ticonderoga.

Yvonne was a 1986 graduate of Ticonderoga High School. She was a resident of Ticonderoga and Crown Point for most of her life.

Yvonne was the happiest taking care of other people. In her early years, she worked as a nanny in New Jersey. Later in life, she was a home health aide making many special friends. Most recently, she provided care for the residents at Mountain Lake Services at North Road in Moriah Center, NY. Yvonne often quietly gave to others in such ways as volunteering at the animal shelter or just stopping to spend some extra time with an elderly client on the weekend.

On June 3, 1995, she married the love of her life, Gary King. He understood her like no other. Yvonne and Gary shared their love of animals with their two special cats, Jelly Bean and Big Foot.

Survivors in addition to her husband, Gary King; include her mother, Constance Peeters of Ticonderoga; one brother, Theodore C. Peeters and his wife, Darlene of Ticonderoga; and one sister, Susanne M. Huestis and her husband, John of Ticonderoga. She is also survived by two nieces, Nicole Huestis and Kaitlyn Huestis, and one nephew, Joshua Peeters.

CROWN POINT — Germain (Jim) H. St. Pierre, 87, passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vt. He was born in Drummondville, Quebec on Nov. 1, 1923 the son of Wilfred P. and Lucille (Theroux) St. Pierre.

Germain married the former Estelle M. LeClair in Claremont, NH at St. Mary’s Church in 1943. She passed away in 1990.

Prior to moving to Crown Point in 1960 he worked with his father in Claremont, N.H., on the family dairy farm. Jim owned and operated a dairy farm for about fifty years in Crown Point. Germain was also a truck driver employed by Coca-Cola, Mayflower and Dorn’s Transportation. He also worked for several years at Crown Point Central School. Jim was recently a resident of Heritage Commons in Ticonderoga.

Germain was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Local 648 Teamsters Union, the Dairyman’s League, and the National Farmer’s Organization.

Survivors include seven sons, Mark (Donna) St. Pierre of Crown Point, Gary (Linda) St. Pierre of Port Henry, Rodney St. Pierre of Chuluota, FL, Norman (Carole) St. Pierre of Crown Point, and Kenneth (Machelle) St. Pierre of Crown Point; four brothers, Ferdinand “Pete” (Clairienne) St. Pierre, Antonio St. Pierre of Charlestown, NH, Joseph (Yvonne) St. Pierre of Claremont, NY, and Maurice (Judy) St. Pierre of Claremont, NH; two sisters, Francoise (John) Goforth of Henderson, NV and Monique Bedard of St. Agathe, Quebec; 17 grandchildren, and 19.5 great grandchildren. He also leaves his special friend Genevieve Merriam of Ticonderoga.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Paul St. Pierre, Leo St. Pierre, Roch St. Pierre and Gerard St. Pierre; three sisters, Gilbert Ferland, Madeline Rodrique and Clemence Rocco.

Calling hours were held on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Crown Point. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery immediately following the mass.

DELMAR – Given S. Hynds, 93, an 88 year resident of Delmar, died on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010.

Born in Cooperstown on Nov. 21, 1917, he was the son of the late Claude and Elizabeth (Sperbeck) Hynds. Given honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy and was Commander of the American Legion Blanchard Post #1040 from 1960 to 1961. An early aviator, Given was a Galaxy Member of the Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Scotia. He was instrumental in the construction of the “Strat,” an experimental plane currently on display at the museum. Given will be remembered for his competitive nature and he enjoyed life to its fullest, remaining active into his 90s. He was also a member of the Ticonderoga Country Club.

Given was predeceased by his wife, Frances A. Hynds and is survived by a cousin, Art Warner of Clifton Park. Given loved his many caregivers and companions who aided him greatly during the last year of his life. A special thanks to the staff of the Community Hospice of Albany and of the St. Peter’s Hospice Inn for their comfort and care during Given’s final days.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Given and his wife, Frances, will be laid to rest in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205.
