Ti street art nets $5,000 for monument TICONDEROGA — The downtown Ticonderoga street art project has generated tangible results. An auction of the 32 decorated wooden soldiers that stood guard in the community this summer raised $5,000 for new lighting at the Liberty Monument. More than 60 people turned out for auction at Adam’s Rib Sept. 30 when the soldiers and four other pieces of donated artwork were put up for auction by the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership. “Throughout the evening, the excitement level was high as those in attendance spent the cocktail hour viewing the unique one of a kind works of art lined up along the walls, beckoning the highest bidders,” said Sue Rathbun, chairwoman of Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership. “During the preview, all were treated to delicious appetizers provided by Darren Geiser, owner-chef of Adam’s Rib, while listening to upbeat guitar and vocal music graciously donated by Nelson Shapiro, Ticonderoga's well-known music teacher.” Rick Harker served as auctioneer. The first item to go to bid was a beautiful 24 x 36-inch canvas wrapped color print donated by Rich Timberlake, photographer, who has a summer home on Lake George. The winning bid was $410, setting the bar for things to come. The first soldier auctioned was created by Ticonderoga Elementary

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake Fire Department has been praised for going “above and beyond the call of duty.” Scott Scherhaufer and his sons were involved in a traffic accident on the Northway last August. They received much more than medical

attention from the responding Schroon Lake ambulance crew — and he wants people to know about it. “I’m fortunate that my sons witnessed first hand the goodness in others, even during a bad situation,” Scherhaufer said. “We are truly grateful to these men and to their entire department for their kindness and generosity.” Brian Caza, Tony Ramirez and

Bridge anniversary to be observed By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Crown Point residents will mark the year anniversary of Champlain Bridge closure. A “Community Gathering” will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Crown Point State Historic Site, adjacent to the now demolished bridge. The event will include a questionand-answer session with Flatiron Construction personnel, according to Karen Hennessy, event organizer. Flatiron is the firm now building a new bridge at the site. “We will gather out by Fort St. Frederic overlooking the new bridge site,” Hennessy said. “We will start our ceremony by 1:30 p.m. followed by the meet-and-greet to be held in the pavil-

ion. We will have a few speakers, a salute to the old bridge by the Cumberland and the Grand Isle ferries and, hopefully, a few folks from our communities will share their stories, feelings and thoughts. “We have survived this past year, some better than others, and this gathering is not to dwell on the past but to look to the future,” she added. “We are here because we stuck together as a community and this is something to celebrate.” Hennessy is asking people to bring snacks and refreshments to share. Warm cider will be provided. People should bring their own beverages. “The emphasis is on fellowship and community,” Hennessy said. The Champlain Bridge linking Crown Point o Addison, Vt., was

abruptly closed last October when engineers discovered dangerous deterioration of the structure. It served about 4,000 vehicles a day. A ferry service now links Crown Point and Addison, Vt. The bridge was demolished in December and construction started on a new bridge in June. The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic by December of 2011. The contract to construct the new Champlain Bridge has been awarded to Flatiron Constructors of Lafayette, Colo. It was the low-bidder at $69.6 million, which is about $10 million under engineering estimates. The 300-foot-wide bridge will be based on a modified network arch design and will include bike paths and pedestrian walkways on both sides.
