GOP selects candidate in Ti Michael Parent won the Republican Party nomination for Ticonderoga highway superintendent in primary voting Sept. 14. Parent defeated Paul Sharkey, 291-55, for the GOP nod. Sharkey has filed as an independent and will be back in November on that line. The winner in the November general election will replace former Highway Superintendent Arthur “Pat” Morrison, who resigned after a conviction for taking kickbacks. Parent worked for the town highway department for 35 years, while Sharkey is the owner of Sharkey’s Snowplowing Service.

The Crown Point State Historic Site celebrated its 100th anniversary Sept. 18 with birthday cake cut by an 18th century sword. From left are Site Manager Thomas Hughes, Dougla Pyrke, Friends of Crown Point President John Freilich and Crown Point Historian Joan Hunsdon. The historic fort ruins at Crown Point became a permanently-preserved state park April 22, 1910. It boasts two National Historic Landmarks on 380 acres of Lake Champlain waterfront, the stone remains of the Frenchbuilt Fort St. Frederic (1734-1759) and the British Crown Point fort (1759-1773). Both sites have endured through the centuries as authentic ruins, allowing guests to see the foundations of the forts in their original locations and to imagine the forts as they were in the 1700s, when they teemed with activities.

Board can’t meet Ti street art to be auctioned Moriah assessment panel lacks quorum By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — Assessments are a hot topic for many, but few people in the town of Moriah seem willing to do anything about them. The town has three vacancies on its board of assessment review. That leaves the five-member board without a quorum and unable to meet. Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said the town has advertised the vacancies three weeks and no one has submitted an application to serve.

“With all the interest in assessments it’s hard to believe no one will serve on the board of assessment review,” Scozzafava said. The board of assessment review guarantees the rights of the taxpayer by hearing claims pertaining to fair and impartial assessment values. Residents who disagree with their assessments have the right to appeal to the board of assessment review, which has the power to lower values. The five member board serves without compensation and is appointed by the

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — After standing guard throughout Ticonderoga most of the summer, the community’s “soldiers” have a final duty. The 30 six-foot tall wooden soldiers, a street art project sponsored by the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, will be auctioned Thursday, Sept. 30. The event, which will benefit the efforts to revitalize downtown Ti, will be held 5:308:30 p.m. at Adam’s Rib restaurant. “Many of the figures depict artist renditions of the area’s early soldiers, while others include a Rogers’ Ranger, golfer, fisherman and Scotsmen,” said Sue Rathbun, project coordinator. “Some contain wonderful paintings of Ticonderoga’s historic buildings, sites or themes related to the lakes.

“From more authentic to whimsical and fun, all the figures are unique works of art that have attracted much attention and very positive comments,” she added. “We’ve had artists of all ages and skill levels volunteer to help and it’s been such fun to see the final results.” Rathbun pointed out the soldiers were painted by wide variety of community members — students, senior citizens, professional artists and others. The Sept. 30 events will include a cash bar, complimentary appetizers and music donated by Nelson Shapiro, a professional musician and Ticonderoga High School music teacher. The auction will be conducted by Rick Harker, professional auctioneer and owner of Mountain Time Furniture on Montcalm Street in downtown Ticonderoga. “And there's more,” said Rathbun, the TMSP chairwoman. “We have another work
