By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Food Pantry is changing. “When I started working here we served mostly unemployed people,” said Emma Williams, who has volunteered 16 years at the pantry. “Now it’s a lot of working families who just can’t make ends meet.” Margaret Beuerlein, pantry director, agrees. “When gas prices starting getting near $4 (a gallon) a few years ago we started seeing a lot of new people,” she said. “We used to get 35-40 people a month. That’s more than doubled.” The Ticonderoga Food Pantry now serves 85-100 families a month. “That’s families,” John Williams, a pantry volunteer, pointed out. “We’re feeding a lot of people.” Located in the basement of the First United Methodist Church at 1045 Wicker St., the pantry is sponsored by the Ticonderoga Area Clergy Association. It’s a non-denominational service open 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The pantry is open to Ticonderoga and Putnam residents and follows federal income guidelines. Those
Fort Ticonderoga hosted its annual Revolutionary War Encampment Sept. 11 and 12. More than 600 re-enactors brought the American Revolutionary War experience to life for visitors during the weekend. The historic capture of Fort Ticonderoga on May 10, 1775, by Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys marked America’s first victory of the American Revolution. Fort Ticonderoga remained a strategic stronghold and key to the continent throughout the early years of the war. In 1777, British forces under General Burgoyne successfully recaptured Fort Ticonderoga, forcing American troops to abandon the fort and Mount Independence across Lake Champlain. TICONDEROGA — A plan to renovate the old MosesLudington Hospital into senior citizen apartments is on hold. Liberty Affordable Housing, the company that proposed the project, failed to secure the expected grant funding, Ticonderoga Supervisor Deb Malaney said at the Sept. 9 town board meeting. “It’s quite disappointing,” Malaney said. “We thought we had a very, very strong grant application.” Malaney said the project is not dead. Liberty Affordable Housing will re-apply for grant funding, she said. Company officials told the Ti town board in January it had cleared all hurdles except financing, although that approval was expected in
