fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Emergency Squad has cleared another hurdle in its efforts to construct a new building. The town planning board has approved the squad’s proposal for a new 4,100 square feet home to be

built at the site of the former Ticonderoga Civic Center between The Portage and Lake Champlain Avenue, according to Sue Johnson, squad secretary. “Ground should be broken in the next month or so,” Johnson said. “It should take approximately 4-5 months from start to finish. “ The Ticonderoga Emergency Squad began a fundraising campaign for a new facility in 2009 when the town board sold the volunteer group land for $1 — with conditions. The squad must have the money

for a new facility in hand in two years and construction must be complete in another two years or the land reverts back to town ownership. The proposed building will be approximately 4,100 square feet with two drive through bays, a meeting room, offices and sleeping quarters, Johnson said. The architect is Steve Jung of Schroon Lake. Johnson stressed the building will be constructed without taxpayer support. “We receive no town funding from

Ticonderoga and we are solely supported by donations and soft billing (insurance reimbursements),” Johnson said. To kick-off fundraising efforts, the squad raffled a 2005 Honda Shadow VLX 600 motorcycle. Squad members have also held coin drops. Other fundraising events are also being planned. “Fundaising has been slow,” Johnson said. “We are estimating that it will cost us approximately $800,000 with $200,000 raised to date.”

Soldiers to run marathon By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — A group of American soldiers will test their mettle in the 13th annual Adirondack Marathon. More than 50 troops from Fort Drum and seven more from the United States Military Academy at West Point will run the 26.2-mile race in Schroon Lake Sept. 26. “Eighty-seven Fort Drum soldiers have signed up to train for the Adirondack Marathon,” Joel Friedman, race director said. “With deployments and duty considerations, it is anticipated that approximately 50-55 soldiers will toe the line to tackle the hilly route around Schroon Lake. “While it is difficult to make the necessary time commitment to marathon training under the best of circumstances, it is even more mentally and physically taxing to maintain that pledge when faced with erratic hours, field duty and military uncertainties.” Friedman said the race committee will waive the entry fee for soldier and is seeking housing to assist them. “To in some small way express the pride we feel at the sacrifices these men and women continue to make in our behalf, Adirondack Marathon Distance Festival officials have instituted a policy to

Alexandra Lacey enjoyed Champ Day in Port Henry. The community will host its 120th annual Labor Day celebration Sept. 4 and 5, sponsored by the Moriah Chamber of Commerce. This year’s celebration kicks off 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, with bands performing at the Port Henry Beach. Food vendors will be on hand at the pier, where spectators can view fireworks at 9 p.m. Beginning noon Sunday, Sept. 5, floats and community groups will line up for the 1 p.m. parade along Broad Street and Main Street. Immediately following the parade is a special marching band demonstration. Noon also marks the start of the chicken barbecue and the opening of carnival rides for children. Bands will be playing throughout the afternoon and evening, capped off by a 6-9 p.m. performance at the Port Henry pier. Photo by Nancy Frasier
