Proposed assessor change sparks controversy By Jon Hochschartner jonh@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Many ar e opposed to the town board’s proposal to eliminate its three elected tax assessor positions in favor of one appointed position. majority of the audience members who spoke were opposed to the plan. Chris Johnson, who has served as a member of the boar d of assessment r eview, said he had tremendous admiration for the members of the town board, but he disagreed with their decision. “A single assessor appointed by a board invites corruption,” Johnson said. “If you say , ‘You better take another look at so-and-so’s pr operty,’ they will. Because you’r e the folks signing the

check.” Kathy Caswell said she supported the boar d’s proposal. “For me to vote for an assessor or to vote for anything else, like road commissioner— what do I use for criteria?” Caswell said. “I don’t know whether the assessors are crooked or not. I don’t know whether they do a good job. I want someone like the board to be responsible.” See CROWN POINT, page 15
