Ti school budget adopted By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Voters have approved the Ticonderoga Central School District’s 2011-12 budget. A revised $18,997,947 budget passed, 545-542, in voting June 21. A proposed $19,085,916 spending plan was rejected by voters, 499-443, May 17. The initial budget proposal included reductions in textbooks, the district newsletter, library, internal auditing, computers, transportation, athletics, summer school, the annual Whale Watch trip and other items totalling $242,319. The Ticonderoga Teachers Association agreed to forgo most of its contractual wage increases. Those concessions totalled $320,000. Teachers were to receive a 5.73 percent wage increase but agreed to waive 85 percent of their raises and skip step increases in their salaries. They also agreed to freeze extracurricular activity pay. Those concessions, though, weren’t enough to prevent job loses. The elementary school principal position, an elementary reading teacher, a kindergarten teacher and a teaching assistant are being eliminated through attrition. Two teachers and a teaching assistant are being eliminated by lay off. Three other teachers and a teaching assistant will to become See BUDGET, page 10

Ti priest to retire Father Bill Muench served Ti, Crown Point for 15 years
By Fred Herbst
fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The future is a bit uncertain for Father Bill Muench as he heads into retirement, but that’s OK. “I’m scared silly; in a lot of ways I have no idea what to expect,” said Muench, who will celebrate his final Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Ticonderoga June 26. “I realize there are a lot of possibilities out there. I hope to find a meaningful role where I can continue to help the church and Father Bill Muench people. “There are so many things I’d like to do, that I need to do,” Muench said. “I’m going to go out and find them.” Muench has been a priest 52 years, serving

Historic designation may be sought By Fred Herbst
fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Crown Point may seek federal designation as a historic district in order to make repairs to the Knapp Senior Center.
The building, located at the edge of Veterans Park, is in disrepair and needs substantial work, Supervisor Bethany Kosmider said. “We called in a structural engineer to look at it,” she said. “There are problems with the foundation that must be fixed.”
The century-old building, which serves as home to Crown Point senior citizens, was given to the town in the 1970s by the Masons. The deed requires the town to consult with the Masons before making any changes to the building. See CROWN POINT, page 22

It was like that scene out of ‘Extreme Home Makeover ’ when they move the bus and the See MORIAH, page 14
