‘A Night at the Museum’ May 12

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — There’s no ancient curse like the movie, but the Hancock House will come alive during the inaugural “A Night at the Museum.” Sponsored by the Ticonderoga Historical Society and the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, the event will be held Thursday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at the Hancock House museum, 6 Moses Circle. “Join us for a jam-packed and fun-filled evening where history comes alive,” stated June Curtis, T iconderoga Historical Society board member. Matt Courtright, chamber executive dir ector, said the evening will include historic re-enactments and activities, hors d’oeuvres, sweet treats, wine and song. Admission is $15 a person and $25 a couple. Gov. declares Essex County flooding disaster, tours area By Jon Hochschartner jonh@denpubs.com MORIAH — After Gov. Andrew Cuomo landed in a helicopter at the Moriah Central School April 29, he declar ed a State Disaster Emergency in Essex County in the wake of a storm that left r oadways and homes flooded throughout the region.

Cuomo gave a pr ess conference in the town of Moriah, one of the hard est hit areas, at the site of the Moriah Broad Street Bridge, which collapsed after a flash flood on April 27. The bridge is located on one of the busiest roads in the county, County Route 4 between the hamlet of Moriah and the village of Port Henry on Lake Champlain. See FLOODS, Page 16

CROWN POINT — The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York has discontinued its Extra Helpings Program. The pr ogram served families in Crown Point and Moriah. In the past it was offered in Ticonderoga. “I'm sorry it is ending,” Laurie Harvey, Cr own Point Extra Helpings coor dinator, said. “W e had built up to 15 participants and over 40 packages or dered totalling almost $800 last month. It was really beginning to grow in the last four

months. People say they depend on it and will miss it. Knowing of no other pr ogram like it, they have been unable to find a re placement.” Extra Helpings is a cooperative food-buying program that provides people with pur chased food bags through partner agencies such as community centers throughout the food bank’s 23-county service area. Extra Helpings pr ovides food at low cost so people can stretch their food-buying dollars. Once a month, customers pr epay for Extra Helpings food at local host sites. Customers may use cash, check, or food stamps. The Extra

Helpings program has no age limit and no income limits. Harvey said the food bank will try to offset the impact of the Extra Helpings demise by working with local food pantries. “The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York says ther e has been tr emendously incr eased use of ar ea food pantries and they will be working with these,” she said. Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York officials said the decision to halt the Extra Helpings program was “deemed necessary in light of the curr ent economic cli-
