TICONDEROGA — Bayleigh Clark took her time making her lunch selection during the St. Mary’s School Wellness Fair, wanting to make the healthy choice. In the end, with the help of teacher Ellie Berube, Clark picked milk and vegetables. “It’s all about giving kids healthy choices,” explained Berube, a physical education teacher and chairwoman of the Wellness Fair. “We want healthy, happy children.” The fair capped Wellness Week at St. Mary’s School. Each day of the week emphasized a healthy lifestyle choice, leading up the main event — the Wellness Fair. Open to the public as well as students, the Wellness fair featured about 20 health-related exhibits. Students and visitors learned about nutrition, drug awareness, pet care, dental health, physical therapy, hygiene, CPR and more. Organizations attending the Wellness Fair were

Schroon Lake School Board adopts spending plan Tax levy exceeds state mandated cap By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake School Board has decided to put forth a budget that exceeds the state tax cap, but keeps cuts to programs and staff to a minimum.

Should voters strike down the spending plan May 15, deeper cuts will be inevitable, school officials say. And, since the proposed 3.99 percent tax levy exceeds the 2.94 percent increase allowed under the state’s mandated tax ceiling at Schroon Lake, the budget must be passed by a 60 percent majority. Historically, the district has been unable to pass a budget with that large a majority. If the budget is not passed the board would have to con-

struct another budget to put before voters. Should that one fail the district would be forced to adopt a contingency budget including a flat, zero percent tax increase, resulting in significant cuts to programs, staff and extra-curricular activities. The board adopted its 2012-13 budget during a April 5 meeting. The total budget is $7,235,566, a decrease of $16,6813 from the 2011-12 budget which is $7,402,379. Even with the 3.99 tax increase,

the district still needed to close a $482,763 gap in revenue. To do so, the school board is proposing cuts to the modified and junior modified sports teams and hourly reductions of faculty members through schedule revisions. They will also reduce a math/reading position to half time, and reduce money spent on maintenance materials and supplies for the senior play.
