Residents arrested in drug sweep

State Police Public Information Officer Lieutenant Charles Potthast said the arr ests followed a year-long investigation, involving mostly prescription drugs such as hydrocodone, Darvocet, oxycodone, fentanyl and Klonopin, purchased with Medicaid or Medicare prescription benefits. Some of the alleged dealers face charges in connection with sale or possession of heroin and cocaine. “The T iconderoga police ar e very active within the Essex County Dr ug T askforce,” said Chief Mark Johns of the T i PD. “I have two members assigned to that taskforce who participated in these investigations and six of our uniformed members participated in the r oundup on W ednesday morning.” Johns said people can expect more drug arrests in Ticonderoga. “We have actually stated that

PORT HENRY — Moriah Central School will be a bit crazier than usual Saturday, March 26. That’s when the school Par entTeacher Organization will host its annual Moriah Madness 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This is an event that not only serves as a fundraising event for our organization, but it is also an affordable, fun-filled event for families to come to and enjoy together,” said Rose Rice of the PT A. “One hundr ed per cent of funds raised by the PTA are used to benefit the school and the students. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year.” Admission is $3 a child, grade 6 and younger, with a $10 cap for a family o f f our o r m ore c hildren. Adults are admitted free. All children must be accompanied by an adult. For more than a decade, Moriah Madness has featur ed games and prizes, Penelope the Clown, face painting, arts and crafts, a book fair, a basket raffle, bake sale, and concession. It’s a popular event, attracting hundreds of people. See MORIAH, page 21

SLC interviews nine for superintendent position By Andy Flynn

andy@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake Central School Boar d of Education this past week interviewed nine candidates for the school superintendent position. Interviews wer e held Mar ch 14-16 and r epresent the first r ound in a four -week pr ocess of choosing t he d istrict’s n ew c hief, ac cording t o School Board President John Armstrong. In the coming week, the second round of interviews will be held and will include participation from a panel of community stakeholders, such as teachers. During Round Two, the applicants will spend a day in Schroon Lake, starting with lunch at the school cafeteria and continuing with tours of the building and the community. Round Three will be held the final week of March and will be followed by Round Four in the

first week of April. The interviewing process will include site visits of the finalists’ hometowns by school officials. Applications for the superintendent’s position came from all over New York and the Northeast, according to Armstrong, and they were collected and sorted by staff at the Champlain Valley Educational Services, which serves 17 school districts in Essex, Clinton, Warren and Washington counties. “We had a fairly larg e pool of applicants,”Armstrong said. The School Boar d then whittled down the applicants to the nine interviewed this past week. The School Board will not be releasing the names of the applicants until the thir d round of interviews. “Out of defer ence to those who have applied in these early phases, we thought that would be best,” Armstrong said.

He r eplaced — John Armstrong Michael Bonnewell, who left the position on June 30, 2010, after 10 years to take the superintendent’s job at theAlbion Central School District in Orleans County. Armstrong said he expects the new superintendent to be on the job by the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1. Although a salary has not yet been determined, the salary was advertised at a range between $110,000 and $125,000. Blair is currently making about $125,000, not including benefits.
