Schroon hotel planned National chain sought for project By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — Construction of a new hotel in Schroon Lake could begin this year. Talks are under way to bring a national chain to Route 9, south of the hamlet. “This has been in the works since 2006,” said Roger Friedman, one of the investors. “It’s no secret we’ve been discussing a hotel. It’s needed badly in our community.” Joining Friedman in the investment group, Schroon Revitalization Group, LLC- Schroon Lake Hospitality, are his brother, Joel, and David and Jane Kaufman. The Kaufmans live in Burlington, Vt., but are summer residents of Schroon. Plans call for approximately 81 rooms and suites, meeting rooms, an indoor pool and fitness center. It’s uncertain if there will be a restaurant or other amenities. Joel Friedman stressed plans won’t be finalized for the $8 million project until a franchise agreement is reached with a national chain. “We are continuing to study the flags (chains) out there,” he said. “We’re looking for a mid-scale property appealing to both the highway traveler and the leisure-destination traveler. “We’re still trying to figure out the bits and pieces that are the best fit for the

tion, it’s uniqueness and all it brings to students’ lives,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to be grateful for what Catholic schools add to our communities. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate the existence of St. Mary’s and its wonderful students.” Before returning to the state legislature, Little asked for the prayers of students. “As I go back to Albany I appreciate your prayers,” she said. “Believe me, we need them.” Little, who is in her fourth term representing the 45th Senate District, is the ranking member of the Local Government Committee and also serves on the Education Committee, among others. She is a former teacher and is the mother of six children. Following the Mass Little joined other school benefactors at a reception in the school gymnasium. St. Mary’s School celebrated its 50th anniversary last June. Construction started on the school on Amherst Avenue in March 1958 and the first students attended classes in September 1959. When St. Mary’s School opened it welcomed 171 students in grades 1-4. An additional class was added each year until the school had eight grades in 1963-64. The school was staffed then — and now — by the Sisters of St. Joseph. In 1959 the faculty consisted of all nuns. The first lay teacher joined the faculty in 1961.

TICONDEROGA — St. Mary’s School in Ticonderoga is known for its strong academic program. But that’s not the best part of the school, according to state Sen. Betty Little. “At St. Mary’s you know you are loved — by your parents, your faculty and your community,” Little told students Feb. 5. “As you go forward,” she added, “That feeling of love, knowing God loves you, will help in all the challenges you face.” Little attended Mass at St. Mary’s Church to kick off Catholic Schools Week. The Mass was offered for school benefactors, like Little. Celebrating the Mass was Father Bill Muench, assisted by Deacon Elliot Shaw. The senator recently secured a $75,000 New York Power Authority grant to improve energy efficiency at the school. Using the grant, St. Mary’s School is installing new energy-efficient lighting and ceilings and new exterior doors and will proceed with improved weather stripping for existing windows. Sister Sharon Dalton, principal at St. Mary’s School, thanked Little for her support and welcomed her to the school. “Sen. Little has a long history of support and commitment to Catholic education,” Dalton said. Little is the product of Catholic education. She is a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy of Glens Falls and the College of Saint Rose. She noted her parents,

Ti High boosters to reorganize TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga High School Booster Club will hold its 2010 re-organizational meeting on Thursday, Feb. 25, at McDonald’s restaurant at 7:30 p.m. The club now meets for coffee at McDonalds once every two months. The goal of the meeting is to invite parents to continue with the goals of the club for the

2010-11 school year. Chairwoman Lynne Lenhart will be stepping down in June 2010 and is looking to find parents and community members ready to continue with the booster club’s tradition of supporting Ticonderoga Athletes and athletic programs. The Booster Club has spent over $9,000 to assist the Ticonderoga athletes

since 2006. “It has been a pleasure to serve during these past six years and to work with a group of committed parents who are great advocates for the Ticonderoga Athletic program,” said Lenhart. “I am proud of all that the booster club has accomplished, but it is time for me to move to a background role and let some new lead-

ership come in with fresh ideas and input.” Positions to be filled for 2010 are two co-chairpeople positions and a secretary position. The club is also looking to fill various committees. The booster club purchases gear, equipment and clothing items for the Ticonderoga varsity athletic program. These purchases are made possible by the club’s annual fund raiser, the Great Cow Maneuver, held each fall during homecoming week.

HAGUE — The Hague Fish & Game Club’s 51st annual Northern Lake George Ice Fishing Tournament will be held Feb. 27 and 28. This year ’s contest is again co-sponsored by both the Hague and Ticonderoga chambers of commerce with lake services provided by the Hague Sno-Goers. The prize pool is topped off with first place lake trout of a Strikemaster Magnum Power Ice Auger, first place perch gets a Clam Kenai ice-shelter and first place in both salmon and northern pike each get a Vexilar Cold-Snap Parka and Bib set. The club will give prizes for second and third places in each of the four categories as well as the daily hourly “blind” prize drawings as well as junior prizes. Fishermen and women can register at the following bait shops: Fish307, Beach Road Bait Shop, The Outdoorsman, Mike’s Bait Shop, Crossroads Store and Norm’s Bait and Tackle. The club will also register contestants at the Hague Visitor Center, Hague Beach, at 6 a.m. both days. The registration fee for both days is $15. Juniors age 16 and younger and seniors age 65 and older are free. An addition to the tournament will be a “kids and novice” ice fishing clinic on Saturday at Hague beach starting at 8 a.m. The instructor for the clinic will be Shawn Hayes, Strikemaster & Clam Ice Fishing pro. This clinic is open to all ages. Equipment will be provided for the first 50 participants and a hot dog lunch will be held for the class at noon. Food and drink will be available both days at the clubhouse and the awards ceremony will held on Sunday at 4 p.m. For additional information call 543-6542.

Rabies clinic slated PUTNAM — There will be a rabies clinic Saturday, Feb. 20, 8 to 9 a.m. at the Putnam town hall, free to the residents of Putnam with cats and dogs. All dogs must be licensed and licenses can be obtained at the town hall the same day.

Ti man guilty in shooting TICONDEROGA — A Ticonderoga man who shot a state trooper during a standoff in the woods of Franklin County has been convicted of two felonies. Donald McCray, 40, was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and criminal use of a firearm after a five-day trial in Franklin County Court. McCray was prosecuted for an Aug. 28, 2008, incident in which he shot Trooper George Stannard, when Stannard tried to disarm him in a wooded area near Saranac Lake. Stannard was wounded and has lost 90 percent use of his right hand, but remains a trooper and canine handler. Police had gone into the woods to find McCray after he called 911 and threatened to

harm himself. Police found him after a two-day manhunt. McCray fled in a canoe on a river and police pursued him in a boat. That led to a standoff on two boats in which McCray pointed the gun at his own head, officials said. It ended when Stannard grabbed the barrel of the .50-caliber muzzleloader as McCray moved it away from his head and in the direction of a forest ranger and trooper. The gun went off, injuring Stannard. McCray has five prior felony convictions and 10 criminal convictions in 19 years. The Franklin County district attorney said he plans to ask for the maximum prison sentence of 15 years in state prison when McCray is sentenced April 14.

6 - TIMES OF TI • OPINION

SATURDAY February 13, 2010

Commuters found a way to cope To the Times of Ti:

The closing of bridge in Crown Point connecting New York State to Vermont is critical to many people in our area, including my family. I believe that everyone in our region is rightfully disappointed with the closing of the bridge, and questioning why it was allowed to get to this point of disrepair, so that it was more practical to just tear it down and start over with it than to work with the existing structure. Surely the cost effectiveness of maintaining it and repairing it all along was more efficient than the cost of what we have to do now, along with allotting monies for ferry runs and other hardships. (And this is not

to mention the hardships that many companies and small businesses face in an already troubled economy.) Somebody, or many people, dropped the ball on this...and I believe that there is a lot of questions that need to be answered...starting with why? Our area is not alone in this crisis. Bridges all over the country are as bad, or worse than, our Crown Point Bridge, several of them being in New York State. They were built to last a certain amount of time, and without proper care, that amount of time seems to be up now. With that being said, “A temporary bridge sure would be nice” whether it be in Port Henry, Crown Point...or Putnam. A temporary solution is not meant to be ideal, and most often, it

will not be. However, sometimes it is just better than having nothing at all. I respect the DOT and the many men and women who are working endless hours and facing much scrutiny to give us what little relief we can find while faced with this nightmare. So, to all of you who hear the criticisms every day...hit them head on...and keep working to resolve this problem despite the obstacles and the scrutiny.....thank you! And many of us do wish we’d found a way to get that bridge...no matter where it would have been, but many of us have found ways to cope without it. Kristy Simard Putnam

Are taxpayers getting a good deal? To the Times of Ti: Hurrah! The temporary Crown Point ferry is up and running. Life will be much easier for many of us. However, I noticed that while the Ticonderoga-Shoreham ferry was operating after the normal season and subsidized by the states of Vermont and New York taxpayers the subsidization was based on number of vehicles, not by the number of occupants in the vehicle. (By the way, they

did a fantastic job. Thank you.) I observed that the Crown Point ferry are ticketing based on the vehicle and number of occupants. I know that during the regular season at the Essex-Charlotte crossing this is the practice. Based on that fact and that this new ferry is being subsidized by taxpayers is this fair? My question is, Is this ferry price gouging? Are the taxpayers being unfairly charged. There may be an honest and logical explanation of how the fees are based. I do think that we are entitled to this information. Thank You. Fredrick Hammann Ticonderoga

Civil service means nothing To the Times of Ti: I would like to respond to the articles you have recently printed regarding the hiring method for Civil Service positions in Elizabethtown. A little over a year ago, I took three civil service exams for open positions and scored in the top three for all of them. I received the top score in the first exam and the third highest in the other two. I have never been called for an interview for any of them. I called the (Essex County) human resources office a couple of months after I received the results of the first exam to question this, since it was my understanding that the top three were supposed to be interviewed for an open position. I was told that the head of that department must not have called for the list yet. Am I to believe that a year later, they still have not interviewed for this position? If what Mr. (County Manager Dan) Palmer says is true, that such a situation “rarely occurs” where a person will score in the top three only to find out the position has been reclassified, then it is a huge coincidence that this has happened to me three times! It’s like we are just donating money to the county to take exams for positions that have already been filled. This definitely needs to change. Wendy Penrose Ticonderoga

The Moriah Food Pantry would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who has donated in this especially hard time. You have passed along a little spark of love and humanity. We would like to mention Essex Farms for sharing their overabundance of very fresh organic produce on a regular basis. Also, we would like to thank the community organizations, including: Moriah Central School students and staff, Port Henry Fire Department, Knights of Columbus, local churches, Glens Falls National Bank, Girl Scouts, V.F.W. and V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. We are also very thankful to Mac’s Market for their drop off box and for all of the people who have donated there and of course the private donators. If it wasn’t for your continued generosity, we simply would not have enough food to continue as we are. Diane Redman Moriah Food Pantry volunteers

OPINION • TIMES OF TI - 7 STAIRS GOT YOU DOWN? YOU NEED A STAIRLIFT!

Gather your coupons … and multi-stack!

L

ast week, I introduced you to the concept of multistacking, a term I use to refer to any deal at the grocery store that involves applying multiple discounts to the purchase of the same items. Through multi-stacking, shoppers can enjoy even greater savings at the register each week, leveraging the power of store coupons, manufacturer coupons and additional sales or special promotions being held at the store. My favorite deals are “money-back” supermarket sales, in which part of what you pay for your items is returned to you at checkout in the form of a Catalina coupon good for money off your next purchase. One of the stores I shop at recently had a “Spend $30, get $15 back” sale on a variety of items. I get very excited when I see these sales, because that $30 is the total before coupons are factored in – pre-coupon, I call it. This particular deal included a variety of cereals. All of them were priced at $2 a box. By buying 15 boxes I could reach the $30 spending mark and qualify for the special sale. Now, right away, I suspect a few of my readers may be snickering a bit. Fifteen boxes of cereal? In one shopping trip? You bet! At my store, these great, high-level moneyback sales tend to come around only once every few months or so. When they do, it’s a great opportunity to stock up on the cheap. Cereal is an excellent item to add to your grocery stockpile at home. It typically doesn’t outdate for 11 months or more. And when you buy more, you save more. I always take advantage of these sales when they come along. And I can’t remember a time when I paid more than a quarter a box for a name-brand cereal. Really. That’s actually the high end of what I’ll pay. I typically pay much less than that for cereal, as you’ll see during my story of this $30/$15 sale. As I entered the cereal aisle, I was on the lookout for instore coupons. It’s always a good idea to scan for coupons that may be in dispensers or on the shelves of your supermarket. When I see coupons for products I like I always take a few, because I will have those coupons on hand next time

Letters welcomed

a sale comes around. Sometimes, the coupon you need to sweeten a deal is hanging right in front of you on the shelf. Keep your eyes open! That was the case with my cereal buy. As I added 15 boxes to my cart, I spied a tear pad of $1 coupons for the cereal hanging on the shelf right under the boxes. So, I took 15 of them. I never clean out a store of coupons; there are typically more than a By Jill Cataldo hundred coupons on a tear pad. Don’t be afraid to take what you will use! Remember, coupons are placed there in the hope that you will use them and try the product. I headed to the register with my 15 boxes of $2 cereal and 15 $1 coupons. The cashier scanned my cereal and the register total came to $30. I handed the cashier my $1 coupons; after they were redeemed, my bill was $15. I paid $15… and I received $15 back in Catalina coupons good for my next shopping trip. So, I got back the same amount of money I spent on the cereal. My 15 boxes of cereal are, essentially, free. I’ve stressed this point in previous columns but I can’t say it often enough: shoppers must think of coupons as cash. They are essentially a form of cash, for shoppers and for the stores where we do business. When a supermarket has a sale like a “Spend $30, get $15 back,” shoppers still spend $30 on the items. My $1 coupons “paid” for $15 of my $30 spending and the store will get that $15 back from the manufacturer when it redeems the coupons. The $15 in Catalina coupons that I received function just like cash in the store. They’re good for anything I want to buy on my next shopping trip. So, I view this as having exchanged one form of cash for another… but I’m still holding the $15 in my hand that I just paid for the cereal. It’s just in the form of a coupon now. And you know how much I love coupons!

Crown Point From page 1

Crown Point Chief Scott Ingleston step up and do it anymore.” Ingleston believes the manpower shortage has two causes. The state-mandated requirements for volunteers are ever-increasing. When Ingleston became a firefighter in 1981 he was required to complete 39 hours of basic training. Today a new firefighter must complete 100 hours, including two days at a state fire school. The nearest one is in Saratoga. To become an EMT a volunteer must complete six months of twice weekly classes and be re-certified every three years, Ingleston said. “The (state) requirements ask a lot of volunteers,” he said. “We scheduled an

EMT class here in Crown Point two years ago to make it easier for people; no one signed up. There’s just no interest.” The economy is also a factor, Ingleston said. Many people now work more than one job, leaving little time to volunteer. “People are concerned with their families and jobs,” he said. “The fire department isn’t the priority it once was. People have a different agenda now. It’s hard for them to find the time to go to the fire house to train or go on calls.” The Crown Point fire company just received three applications from prospective new members, Ingleston said. They are the first applications to join the department in more than two years. Ingleston said new members are welcome. Anyone interested in joining the department can stop at a meeting. The department meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the fire house. Crown Point’s fire company formed in 1906 as the A.E. Phelps Chemical Engine Co. It later became the A.E. Phelps Engine Company and is now the A.E. Phelps Fire and Rescue Company. It has two ambulances, two fire engines, a mini pumper, a tanker, a utility truck and a rescue boat. An emphasis of the department is education. Ingleston said local firefighters visit Crown Point Central School at least once a year with fire safety information, while emergency medical technicians also visit the school with first aid and accident prevention information.

Take the case of Dave Hobbs, a Crown Point EMT. The Crown Point ambulance responded to 160 calls for help in 2008 with Hobbs along for 85 percent of the calls. He was named 2009 Basic Life Support Provider of the Year by the state Department of Health for his efforts, but how long can he keep up that pace at age 72? “I don’t know where we’d be without Dave,” Ingleston said. “I know he really loves doing it, but down the line we have to get more EMTs.” The manpower shortage is so acute the local ambulance has been unable to respond to some calls recently, Ingleston said. Those calls were answered by Lamoille Ambulance Service, a Vermont-based company that operates in Ticonderoga. Lamoille, though, is a private forprofit business that bills its customers. The A.E. Phelps ambulance is taxpayer supported and free to local residents. So what’s the solution? Ingleston said the department has discussed recruiting drives and even hiring paid staff to supplement the work of volunteers. “I really don’t know what we’ll do,” he said. “There’s just a real shortage of volunteers. People aren’t willing to

Wintertime duldrums The Need for Light Some people become depressed, lack energy, and crave carbohydrates in the winter months. If you experience these symptoms in the winter and they seem to go away as spring and summer arrive, you could have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Fewer daylight hours means less sunlight to your body, which can trigger a biochemical response and affect moods. Taking walks during daylight hours can help. Try to get more natural light into your home and office by sitting near windows without drapes. If symptoms don’t go away, consider buying a special fluorescent light that is used to treat SAD.

Frozen cans Accidentally frozen cans, such as those left in a car or basement in sub-zero temperatures, can present health problems. If the cans are merely swollen—and you are sure the swelling was caused by freezing—the cans may still be useable. Let the can thaw in the refrigerator before opening. If the product doesn’t look and/or smell normal, throw it out. DO NOT TASTE IT! If the seams have rusted or burst, throw the cans out immediately, wrapping the burst can in plastic and disposing the food where no one, including animals can get it.

STAR STAR (New York State School Tax Relief Program) lower property taxes for certain property owners, regardless of age or income, who use their homes as a primary residence. The State sets the amount of the benefit every year, based on the value of property in the school district and the school tax rate. “Enhanced STAR” is available to property owners who will be 65 by the end of the year. This program provides for even greater STAR benefits. The disabled and seniors who are property owners with limited income may be eligible for additional real property tax exemptions as well. Filing date for all towns is March 1, 2010. To receive an exemption application for eligible individuals or information, contact your local assessor.

Former DA recognized PORT HENRY — Julie Garcia, a Moriah native and former Essex County district attorney, was recently honored for her work fighting under-age drinking. The Lewis Henry Morgan Institute recognized Garcia and others in an Albany ceremony. Garcia was cited for her support of One Second Everything Changes, a forensic-style exhibition that portrays New York State’s youth who were put at risk in life-altering crashes in the Southern Tier, Leatherstocking Region, and the Capital Region. She was also recognized for her prosecution of alcohol-related crimes while in office. The exhibit, through words, images, and personal items from the crash victims, focuses on fateful events in a forensic style. It

does more that put a face and a name to victims in incidents that are too often seen as isolated events. The exhibit shares the victims’ stories and the stories of their friends and families who are left with the hard task of making sense of tragedy. The crash victims were sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, and above all friends. They had everything to live for but the immortality of youth met a culture of the extreme and in an instant everything changed. Awards were presented to Garcia, Elizabeth Obad, Erie County Mothers Against Drunk Driving representative (MADD), the Governor ’s Traffic Safety Committee, and Denise Cashmere, Schenectady County STOP-DWI coordinator and NYS STOP-DWI Coordinators Association chairwoman.

community,” he added. “We don’t have a final plan yet.” Roger Friedman noted several studies in the past 30 years have indicated the need for hotel rooms in Schroon. He pointed to a 1977 study that led to a failed attempt to bring a hotel-conference center to the former Camp Idlewood property. Another study, completed last year, also suggested the need for more lodging. “Schroon Lake has no place to house people,” Roger Friedman said. “The last count showed there were 493 rooms in the town; 200 that are owned by Word of Life that are only quasi-public. Of the 493 rooms on that list, 92 are no longer operating. In the last five years we’ve lost 90 rooms.” Joel Friedman added many travelers prefer chain hotels because they know what to expect. “We don’t have what the traveling public wants,” he said. “The majority are looking for chains because they know chains have minimum standards, they know what to expect from a name hotel.” The Friedmans believe a new hotel will be an economic boost to the entire community. “We need tourism dollars in Schroon Lake,” Roger Friedman said. “The entire community benefits when people visit. They eat out, go to movies, shop, use the marinas. I can’t stress the importance of tourism enough.” Joel Friedman pointed out the project will also create jobs for local residents. Once a franchise agreement is reached, the Friedmans expect the project to move along quickly. “In the Adirondacks there is no such thing as a slam dunk,” Roger Friedman said. “If it was a slam dunk it would have been done before, but I’m confident we’ll have success with this project.” Joel Friedman said most hotel chains have basic designs for their properties. Once a franchise agreement is in place architectural plans will be submitted to the town for a building permit. Since the project is in the hamlet the Adirondack Park Agency is not involved. “We’d like to start work in the spring or summer,” Joel Friedman said. “We’re not certain at this point.” Assisting the project is a $975,000 low-interest loan from the state’s Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund. It’s one of 15 projects funded that are designed to spark economic growth in regions with stymied development. It was the only North Country project funded. “My first priority as governor is putting New Yorkers back to work. These funds provide communities with the resources they need to attract development and create jobs,” said Gov. David Paterson. “These 15 Upstate Regional Blueprint projects are a sound investment in our Upstate communities and will help keep our entrepreneurs, workers and families in New York.” Paterson called the hotel project a cornerstone in the revitalization of the town of Schroon.

Ti student playing on Plattsburgh squad TICONDEROGA — Chase Dixon, son of Lance and Jodi Dixon of Ticonderoga, is a member of the Junior Cardinal youth hockey program, which plays in Plattsburgh. The team was founded to provide area youth hockey players the opportunity to compete at an advanced level of play at the Tier II New York State Level. These select players are provided with instruction and taught techniques to further their hockey skills with the support of Bob Emery, SUNYPlattsburgh men’s hockey coach. Dixon is a sixth grade student at Ticonderoga Middle School. Dixon has 16 goals and 10 assists in 38 games this season. His team is 26-6-4, including a win against the reigning Vermont State champions, The Burlington Bobcats. The Junior Cardinals will participate in state pre-sectionals this weekend in Saratoga Springs hoping to advance to state sectionals in Canton.

The races are returning to Schroon Lake after a fouryear absence. “It’s good for the community and good for the club,” said Dwayne Anderson, president of the Schroon Lake -North Hudson Snowmobile Club. Registration both days will be 8-9:30 a.m. with racing to start at noon after classes have been determined. There will be preregistration Friday, Feb. 19, at the Witherbee Carriage House. Mid-winter arrives in the North Country

I

n the North Country, mid-winter is usually defined by the middle weeks of February, when many local schools typically begin a traditional, mid-winter break. Although it may be difficult for many local residents to believe, we have already passed the mid-point of the season and winter is actually on the wane. It doesn’t seem possible, with snow on the ground, solid ice on the lakes and a below zero nip to the air, that winter is on the way out. Yet, on the calendar, spring arrives on March 20, only 35 days distant. However, there remain a wealth of opportunities available for locals to get out and enjoy the winter season with a variety of classes, courses and events in the region that provide individuals the opportunity to learn or refine new outdoor skills. I am always encouraged to learn of the numerous programs in the region that help to connect local children and their families to the pleasures and treasures of the Adirondacks. Saranac Lake, which is now in its 113th year of hosting the longest-running, winter carnival in the nation, has a full schedule of events planned to get local folks outside. The annual frying pan toss is always a crowd favorite. For a complete Carnival schedule and agenda visit www.saranaclakewintercarnival.com or call the Chamber at 891-1990 for further information. The counties of Clinton and Franklin have also developed an outstanding listing of local recreational resources that are available online at http://www.scribd.com/doc/11954129/get-MovingGuide-to-Physical Activity. The website features a variety of local events and programs that allow local residents to remain active and healthy.

Guides, Gander Mountain and Frisbee Golf in Mid-Winter One of my favored programs, the 4-H Adirondack Guide Program, is again being offered in Northern Warren County and sponsored by Cornell University Cooperative Ex-

tension. An orientation meeting for the program is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension Education Center, 377 Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The Adirondack Guide Program is designed for boys and girls (12-18 years old) who would like to explore, in depth, natural resource related topics. The program gives teenagers an opportunity to gain knowledge in the biological sciences and develop teaching and leadership skills. It is conducted in an informal atmosphere, conducive to building confidence and self-esteem. By acquiring new outdoor skills, participants also develop new recreational outlets they can share with friends and family. Participants can advance from the Apprentice Guide level, through Intermediate, to full Senior 4-H Adirondack Guide status while working with licensed Adirondack Guides, Forest Rangers, Fish and Wildlife Biologists, Foresters and skilled woodsmen. Activities include field trips and classes, canoe and hiking trips, and community service projects. Topics taught include map and compass reading; canoeing; tree, plant, flower and wildlife identification; environmental teaching techniques; woods lore and safety; first aid and lifeguard training; outdoor clothing and equipment; wilderness trip coordination, and global positioning systems (GPS). For more information, or to register, call the Cornell Cooperative Extension office at 623-3291 or 668-4881. For further information, ask to speak with John Bowe. At the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center in Willsboro, their annual Winter Break Camp, hosted from Feb. 15-19, will feature winter activities, including snow tubing, winter hiking, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing. The facility also has a Winter Family Weekend planned for Feb. 19-22 and a course on ice climbing set for

After racing on Sunday, awards will be presented at the Timberwolf Pub. For more information call Anderson at 532-9347 or go to the Eastern Speed Association website at www.easternspeedassociation.com The Schroon Lake -North Hudson Snowmobile Club will also host its annual poker run Saturday, Feb. 13, be-

ginning at the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club. Registration will be 9 a.m. until noon. The winning hand will be drawn at 5 p.m. For more information on the Schroon Lake-North Hudson club go online at www.schroonlakesnowmobiling.com

Feb. 20. Visit www.pmoec.org for program details or call 963-7967. As always, the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will offer a variety of free programs during the school vacation. Program offerings will include crosscountry skiing, ice skating and snowshoeing sessions. A bit further north, the Clinton County Youth Bureau and the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department are co-hosting a Family Winter Outdoor Adventure Program Feb. 17-19. The free, three-day program will introduce youths, 7 years of age and older, and their families to such skills as hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and environmental issues. Pre-registration is required for the program. To pre-register, contact the Clinton County Youth Bureau at 565-4750. There will also be instructional archery classes available for children ages 8-13 at Gander Mountain on Feb. 16 and 18 from 6-7 p.m. Equipment will be provided at no cost and space is limited. Pre-registration is required by calling the Recreation Department at 562-6860. Additionally, the Beartown Ski Area will provide free skiing and snowboarding on Feb. 14, from 6-9 p.m. and there will be Winter Disc Golf for youths ages 13 years and up, on Feb. 19, from noon-1 p.m. at the Cadyville Park Disc Golf Course. Skiing, snowshoes, golf and Frisbees, what a unique combination! For more information or to register, call the Town Recreation Department, at 562-6860, or visit their website, www.townofplattsburgh.com Joe Hackett is a guide and sportsman residing in Ray Brook.
