Ti Little League: a field of dreams

Boston pitcher Zachary Spaulding has hurled a gem against the Chicago Cubs. He leads 1-0, but he’s in trouble. The bases are loaded and Chicago’s top hitter is at the plate with a 3-2 count. The next pitch will make Spaulding a World Series hero or a goat.

Spaulding steps off the rubber and glances into the box seats, making eye contact with his parents and supermodel girlfriend. The Fenway faithful are roaring, but Spaulding hears nothing.

That’s the way Zachary Spaulding, an 11year-old Crown Point boy, imagines the future.

For now, he toils in the Ticonderoga Little League.

For more than six decades Ticonderoga Little League has been teaching baseball to local youth. Nearly 100 children will take to the diamond as the league marks its 61st anniversary this season.

The league features eight teams — EMA, Kiwanis, Legion, Elks, Fire Police, Knights of Columbus, Wind Chill and Stewart’s.

“It’s fun; all my friends play,” said Spaulding, a pitcher and shortstop for the Kiwanis. “We play a lot of games. I like that.”

A fifth grade student at St. Mary’s School in Ticonderoga, Spaulding hopes to someday play for his favor team — the Boston Red Sox. If he makes it, he can thank Ticonderoga Little League for his start.

“The goal of Ti Little League is to provide a positive environment for the youth of Ticonderoga and the surrounding area to participate in our baseball program,” said Mark Munson, league president.

Little League came to Ticonderoga in 1951 with four teams. Tom Malaney was the first league president.

By the 1960s, more boys were interested and the league added two new teams to accommodate them. Games were played in the area where the town sewer plant now sits.

A court challenge by women’s rights groups followed in 1974 to allow girls to play on boys teams. The girls won their landmark case and the rest is history. Today about one in seven little leaguers is a girl.

In 1977, league administrators constructed a new field at the bottom of Rogers Street. It has remained the center of spring and summer baseball activity for the youth in Ticonderoga for the past 35 years.

About that same time a minor league system was developed for players 8 years old as well as those unlucky candidates 9 to 12 years old

who were not selected by a major team. All the while, Ticonderoga rolled with the times and embraced the changes.

Expansion took place in the early 1980s when two more teams were added from an overflow of the minor league division.

The past 20 years, league officers have concentrated on field improvements.

They installed business billboard signs for raising league funds and, with town assistance, an adjacent upper field was constructed to centralize minor league and Little League games.

Renovations continued in the mid-90s as volunteers removed the old clay and sand infield surface and replaced it with a softer slate dust material. That was followed by a purchase of an electronic scoreboard.
