Graduates looking for ‘new solutions to old problems’

Dock Street Landing to be leased to LCDC for $1 PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Common Council recently agreed to lease the Dock Street Landing property to Lake Champlain Development Corp. for the cost of $1 per year for the next 10 years.

The LCDC will be responsible for paying city taxes on the property in the amount of about $5,000 per year.

PLATTSBURGH — The challenges of today’s economic and political climate are ones the graduates of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh are now facing as members of the world outside college.

Honors students Brett Williams and Frances Ercolano gave that perspective in the joint speech as more than 400 students took to the stage at the university’s winter commencement ceremony Dec. 18 at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

The subject is something “we’ve all thought about,” said Ercolano.

“Maybe it’s just bad timing that we’re leaving here in an era which finds employment rates at an historic low and job competition at an historic high,” she said, adding a candid opinion about the solution. “We didn’t make this mess, but we will have to clean it up.”

Williams noted he felt more that cleaning up the problem would be an exciting change to start things anew, rather than being charged with a daunting task. “ I think, actually, we are not the ones who have to solve our country and our world’s problems — we are the ones who get to solve them,” said Williams. “That’s right — the resolution of a crisis has fallen to us, and I think we ought to be thankful for it. If necessity is the mother of invention, then cer-

tainly adversity is the parent of problem solving.”

“Ours is an opportunity to change and better the world which has not been seen for a long time,” he added.

The two agreed the education SUNY Plattsburgh students have received has given every student the tools they will need to be successful in the future.

“Because of all that we’ve learned here at SUNY Plattsburgh, we’re perfectly suited to meet our generation’s unprecedented challenges,” said Ercolano.

“Hard times will become better times because we, as graduates of this university, and citizens of this world will lend our energies and our many talents to that change,” added Williams.

That can be in the simplest of ways, said Williams.

“We can use our skills from English 101 to write a great letter to our congressman.

And, instead of telling all our cyber-friends what we did last night, we can use Facebook to organize a winter clothing drive,” he said. “We can tutor a struggling child afterschool in our favorite subject. And we can keep in touch with our amazing professors who have inspired us to pursue our dreams.”

“Those dreams and goals, born out of our time at Plattsburgh, will help to change our neighborhoods, our cities, our country and our global community,” said Ercolano.

Man pleads guilty to charges

Sex offender arrested on drug charge, other counts

PLATTSBURGH — Leonard Knepp, 26, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance, after crashing a drug-filled vehicle on State Route 9.

Knepp fled the scene of the accident leaving behind cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana, some of which appeared to be packaged for sale.

Plattsburgh City Police caught up with him near the City Recreation Center.

PLATTSBURGH — A level one sex offender is facing felony charges for allegedly selling prescription drugs to a female and then attempting to inappropriately touch and restrain her.

According to the Clinton County Sheriff ’s Department, an investigation by deputies resulted in Ryan Tolbert, 21, Plattsburgh, being charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony. He was also charged with forcible touching and unlawful imprisonment, misdemeanors.

Tolbert was arrested Dec. 16 and arraigned in Schuyler Falls Town Court. He was remanded to Clinton County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Schuyler Falls Town Court Thursday, Dec. 30.

PLATTSBURGH — The road to graduation can be difficult, but not insurmountable if you ask one particular recent Clinton Community College graduate.

Sarah M. Titherington, valedictorian of this year ’s graduating class, conveyed that message as she addressed nearly 200 students at the college’s winter commencement ceremony Dec. 17.

The path to her own graduation, said Titherington, was “by no means, an easy road.”

It was more than 10 years ago Titherington tried attending college fresh out of high school. However, it was at a point in her life was “the absolute last priority” on her mind.

“A few failed attempts at classes completely discouraged me so I decided to find a career instead,” said Titherington. “I found myself working for my family’s company on third shift in the factory. I thought this was some kind of cruel and unusual punishment, but realized I was being taught a valuable life lesson — responsibility for myself.”

One day, the sudden loss of her father, changed Titherington’s life forever.

“I immediately had to step it up and make sure my mom and sisters were go-

ing to be all right,” she said. “I knew my dad would’ve wanted it that way.”

Several years went by before Titherington came to the realization she had put everyone and everything else first.

So, she decided to do something for herself — continue her education.

“It was, by no means, an easy transition,” she said, noting she understood she was leaving a very stable job in tough economic times to go back to school. “However, with the help of great faculty and a great support system at home, I was able to make the switch back to being a full-time student.”

Titherington was able to earn good grades by studying hard, but credited her educators at Clinton Community College for getting her where she is today.

“These accomplishments that I have made since coming back to school can be accredited to this great institution,” she said. “Clinton Community College has given us all stepping-stones towards our futures. Whether these steps lead to another college or to a career, we now have the tools necessary to succeed while carrying our heads high.”

Chambers of commerce sign partnership PLATTSBURGH — An official partnership agreement has been announced between the Adirondacks Speculator Chamber of Commerce and the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, creating the sharing of membership and a number of business services.

Under the agreement, all of the more than 180 members of the Adirondacks Speculator Chamber are now members of the regional chamber, with access to a number of services and benefits including health insurance, electricity cost savings, and small business counseling and support, among others.

“This is an historic step toward that unity, bringing important support services to the small business community of southern Hamilton County while also adding strength to our advocacy and economic development endeavor,” said chamber president Garry F. Douglas. “Both organizations will now be stronger at doing the things they do best, and our overall voice and effectiveness will be that much greater.”

SUNY Plattsburgh awarded $53,000 grant in response to Pfizer closing PLATTSBURGH — A new grant will help small businesses impacted by local Pfizer closings.

The U.S. Small Business Association grant of $53,000 recently awarded to the North Country Small Business Development Center is designed to assist those local businesses and entrepreneurs who have been hit hard by the closings. The pharmaceutical company announced last year it was closing its three North Country research and development operations at a loss of about 600 jobs. The award is one of only 11 Portable Assistance Projects nationally and the only one in New York state.

“With Pfizer having been such a large employer in the North Country, there was a definite need for this kind of assistance,” said Rick Leibowitz, regional director of the center, which is based at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. “This funding will allow us to create an innovative response to the particular needs of our region.”

The center will use the funds to create a marketing cooperative that empowers Clinton County businesses to advertise goods and services to Canadian travelers who cross the border.

“It would be costly to take on a marketing campaign in Canada on our own,” Kris Duus of Lakeside Coffee in Rouses Point said. “And I am grateful for the Small Business Development Center ’s assistance with this marketing initiative.”

The grant will also fund the development of an enhanced feasibility tool. This tool will allow aspiring entrepreneurs to better assess the risk/reward potential of business ideas. Current business owners will also be able to use it to forecast results for various scenarios like the launch of a new product line or a marketing campaign.

In addition, through the Small Business Development Center ’s Portability Project, the center will use the funds to help businesses create best-practice models in response to market changes caused by the loss of this major employer, Leibowitz said. These models will then be reproduced and shared with other similarly impacted communities.

“SUNY Plattsburgh’s strategic plan calls for the college to provide services to our region and beyond,” SUNY Plattsburgh president John C. Ettling said. “Our North Country Small Business Development Center has a reputation for doing just that, but this grant will increase the organization’s ability to target those specific challenges we face in our community, provide innovative solutions and share the results with other communities throughout the United States.”

“Our mission is simple — make sure these grant funds are put to good use to help our local economy,” said Kim Rowe Manion, who was recently hired as the project coordinator for this grant.

Feasibility classes have already been offered to former Pfizer employees seeking self-employment opportunities. The center plans to implement the marketing cooperative by this spring and the updated feasibility assessment tool by this summer.

Clinton County Court sentencings PLATTSBURGH — The following sentencings, furnished by the Clinton County District Attorney's office, were recently recorded in Clinton County Court.

Harold Hosten, 28, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary. Hosten was sentenced to 1-3 years in jail and ordered to pay restitution and surcharges.

Robert Gomez, 46, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Gomez was sentenced to one year in jail on each count to run concurrently. He was further ordered to pay restitution, provide a DNA sample and pay associated fees.

Timothy Taylor, 20, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny. Taylor was sentenced to six months in jail, five years probation and to perform 100 hours community service. He was further ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated surcharges and fees.

April Wright, 32, Plattsburgh,

pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Wright was sentenced to two years in prison and one year post-release supervision. She was further ordered to pay restitution and a surcharge.

Karim Lane, 25, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana, and no seatbelt. Lane was sentenced to eight years in prison and three years post-release supervision.

Lane was further ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated fees and surcharges.

Gary Gambadora, 64, Saranac, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was ordered to pay restitution.

Nathan Gilmore, 24, Merrill, pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sale of marijuana. Gilmore was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to undergo alcohol treatment. He was further ordered to

pay a surcharge.

Joshua Annis, 22, Keeseville, pleaded guilty to first-degree sex abuse. Annis was sentenced to two years in prison and five years postrelease supervision. A stay away order of protection was issued against him and he was further ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated fees and surcharges.

Livingston Hatch Jr., 45, Elizabethtown, pleaded guilty to seconddegree attempted assault and fourthdegree criminal possession of a weapon. Hatch was sentenced to County Drug Court and a stay away order of protection was issued against him. He was further ordered to pay associated surcharges and fees.

Philip Thompson, 26, Ghana, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Thompson was sentenced to time served and ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated surcharges and fees.

Marking new marketing director for PrimeLink

PLATTSBURGH — Victoria A. Marking has been named the new marketing manager for PrimeLink.

In her new role, Marking will be responsible for market research and analysis, all company image and advertising campaigns, public relations, special events, and new product rollouts at PrimeLink and its parent company, Champlain Telephone Company.

“We are very pleased to have Vicki join the PrimeLink management team,” said PrimeLink president and general manager Greg MacConnell. “We are confident that she will enhance the tradition of excellence that PrimeLink customers have come to expect.”

Marking brings more than 12 years of diversified experience in the fields of marketing, public relations, and business management to the telecommunications company.

She was most recently the community relations coordinator at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh, a position she held since 2005. Prior to that, Marking held the position of marketing director for Pyramid Management Group at Champlain Centre.

Marking is a graduate of St. Lawrence University and active in a number of local civic and volunteer organizations.

The Ransoms celebrate 30 years of marriage PLATTSBURGH — Stanley and Christina Ransom celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary Nov. 27.

The couple was married by the Rev. Earl Johnson in the Plattsburgh Presbyterian Church Nov. 27, 1980.

Mrs. Ransom’s matron of honor was the bride’s sister, Barbara Palhof. Best man was the bridegroom’s son, Stanley A. Ransom III. His daughters, Sarah and Rebecca Ransom played a duet, “The Wedding Song.” The organ was played by David Carpenter.

The bride and groom read parts of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s “Gift from the Sea,” followed by an exchange of wedding rings. The assembled guests were invited to the Fellowship Hall following the ceremony. The family then adjourned to their residence at 39 Broad St. to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, following which the bride and groom left for a short honeymoon in Vermont.

The bride was employed as an information scientist by Ayerst Laboratories, Rouses Point.

The groom was director of the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System.

Mrs. Ransom now directs the medical library of CVPH Medical Center. Mr. Ransom is director of the Plattsburgh Public Library.

The Ransoms are planning a future trip to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.

What to do with doodads Holiday visits to the loved ones

ome people will receive a tech toy for Christmas. It many cases the item will be exactly what was desired. In others, it may be less than desired or perhaps the third digital doodad received in the past year. Depending on which category the gizmo fits into, there are a few things to do that could save aggravation down the road.

Start by rounding up all the paperwork, including the receipt, to a safe location. Even if the plan is to keep the item, gift recipients should save the box, the packing materials and any accessories. That way, any returns covered by the warranty should be easier.

Love the new device and plan to keep it? Complete the warranty card and mail it or do the on-line registration. Less expensive gifts may not matter as much as more expensive things, but the easiest time to complete the chore is now. Beyond smoothing the way for possible warranty issues, registering allows the manufacturer to provide notification for any recalls or consumer alerts.

Not feeling the love for the new gadget? Retailers have return policies that

differ depending on the device. Electronic items typically have a very short period in which to make a return, in some cases as short as 14 days. So the recipe for an easy return is simple: don’t waste time. Get everything together and get to the store promptly.

While shopping this past week I asked repBy Ron Poland resentatives from local stores about their return policy. Each retailer has similar policies. For instance, some allow return of an item bought online to the local store while others do not. The 14 day return policy is somewhat relaxed but how it’s relaxed varies widely between retailers. All the reps suggested checking the corporate Web site for more information.

ere are a few suggestions when visiting a loved one in a long-term care facility: • If you are visiting a loved one for the first time, understand this may be an emotional visit. Give yourself time to become acclimated with the facility and get to know the staff.

• People of all ages are welcome to visit, including children. Young children rarely act negatively to nursing home visits. In fact, they usually bring much joy to residents.

• Call ahead to inquire if your loved one has any needs, such as toiletries, clothing or other necessities.

• Perhaps you would like to take your loved one home for a holiday meal, or other outing.

Most visitors initially experience mixed feelings, including nervousness, sadness, guilt or anger. Seek support and advice from the facility’s social services team. Many times, their reassurance is just the medicine you need to feel refreshed before your visit.

• What will we talk about? What will we do?

How will we spend the time? If you’ve ever found yourself asking these questions, at holiday time or otherwise, you’re not alone. Knowing your loved one and their personal likes and dislikes will help you find your way.

Lady beetles not so lady-like

T

ypically, the ladybug or lady beetle, is one of the more popular insects with their bright red color and black spots. You can find decorations adorn with ladybugs, ladybug toys, and even clothing with ladybugs as the main feature. But, if you have had lady beetles invading your home during the winter months, you may not find them so cute or interesting anymore.

The multicolored Asian Lady Beetle (Harmonia Axyridis) now makes its home in the U.S. A native of Asia, this beneficial ladybug was imported in the early 1900s to help naturally control pest populations that were damaging such crops as alfalfa, pecan and citrus trees. The beneficial aspects of this ladybug have been quite useful in reducing the need for pesticides and have relieved the hardwood forests of many disease carrying aphids, mites and scale insects.

The Asian Lady Beetle is much like the native species found through the U.S. However, unlike the native species, this ladybug can be quite aggressive. Masses of ladybugs have been known to swarm and even bite when seeking shelter for the winter months. In this regard, they have been an unwelcome guest for homeowners that don’t find them to be good luck at all, but rather a nui-

sance.

Research entomologists have been working diligently on methods to prevent ladybugs from entering the home and on ways to safely and effectively capture them once inside. Fortunately, ladybugs are not structure damaging insects.

They will not eat home materials and will not lay eggs inside the home. Yet, if disturbed, the ladybug will stress, releasing a yellow, smelly substance from their joints — this is known as reflex bleeding.

It is a defensive mechanism for the insect to defend itself from predators.

The best preventative is to caulk cracks and crevices around doors and windows, pipes that enter the house and replace or repair damaged clap boards. Once ladybugs penetrate the home, they typically return year after year, knowing this was a good site to rest. Pheromones released by past ladybugs are detected by future generations. Also, the color of a home and the location are important factors. They tend to chose light colored homes that are nestled in forest or wooded areas.

Market Basket up for the year

P

rices remained stable in November ’s Market Basket, coming in at $94.08, down a few cents from $94.22 in October, and up 3 percent from last November ’s cost of $91.72.

For the month the only noticeable changes came on produce, which was down 4 percent and miscellaneous items, up 8 percent. For the year, meats, breads, cereals and grains, miscellaneous items and dairy products are all up; produce, frozen foods, canned goods and drinks are down.

In the dairy case, slight decreases on the costs of whole and skim milk and sliced American cheese offset a 48 cent rise on large eggs and 15 cent rise on butter. Butter is now 61 percent more costly than in November 2009, averaging $2.92 a pound; last year this item cost $1.82. Sliced American cheese is 61 cents cheaper than this time last year.

Canned goods remained stable overall with a decrease in the price of Del Monte fruit cocktail and an increase on diced tomatoes. Prices on this category have changed little in cost in the last year.

Although the cost of spaghetti and bread remained the same as in October, they are lower than last year at this time. In November 2009 there were many sales on flour and sugar; unfortunately these basic holiday baking ingredients cost 4 percent and 17 percent more this November.

department is down slightly from last month. Carrots and potatoes, a staple for big holiday meals, are both down for the month and year.

Most frozen food costs remained stable for the month.

For the year, store brand vanilla ice cream is 6 percent less, with the average price at $2.43.

The prices on specific cuts of meat varied this month as they usually do, but all cuts are more expensive than in November 2009. The lowest increases are 2 percent on both ground chuck and sirloin steak; the greatest increases are 15 percent on a pound of Oscar Mayer bacon and 19 percent on whole frying chickens.

Miscellaneous items and drinks prices remained stable for the month and year.

Seasonal reminders The citrus season is at its peak with grapefruit, naval oranges, tangerines and Clementines readily available. These items need to be transported into our region and are therefore going up as gas prices increase. Apples, pears and grapes are still plentiful and contribute good fiber to the diet.

The Market Basket Report is a bi-monthly survey of 41 food items commonly purchased by consumers.

Four major supermarkets are surveyed in the Plattsburgh area and the resulting report produced. The report is a community service sponsored by the Technical Assistance Center at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

On the tracks of a Merry Christmas higher, than it’s ever piled up since. We never needed a hill to slide down; we simply climbed to the top of the snowbanks.

Our parents always devised a special Christmas surprise and dad always seemed to have something up his sleeve. I’m certain he was a magician, for somehow, he always managed to hide a huge assortment presents from the prying eyes of five, curious kids.

On Christmas Eve, we would lie awake in our beds and giggle with glee as we listened to Santa’s sleigh bells ring directly outside our windows. Although we wanted to sneak a peek, to actually see the famous fat man, dressed in red, none of us ever dared.

On Christmas morning, after the whole troop had finished marauding through the house, mom would chase us outside to play.

And sure enough, every year, across the roof of our home, we would see evidence of Santa’s visit. It wasn’t imagined, we actually saw his footprints and they led directly to our

he Christmas holiday has always been special for me. I grew up as one of five siblings, in a large, Irish, Roman Catholic family, during the more innocent decades of the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Admittedly, it probably wasn’t as kind and gentle as my feeble memory allows; yet it was a time when manners still mattered. Children addressed adults with a, “Yes, ma’am” or “No, sir."

Men held the door and boys pulled out chairs for the girls at the dinner table.

My father was a school principal, and mom was a housewife — a title most people considered an honorable occupation, prior to Women’s Lib. Through the focused vision of my youthful eyes, Christmas was a celebration of family mixed in with a few Holy Days, and the arrival of Santa.

It was also an event comparable to celebrating a half-dozen birthdays, all rolled into one.

Maybe it’s due to my miniature stature, but I’m certain the snow back in those days always piled up much

chimney. It was verified by our own eyes.

Many years had passed, and I had two children of my own, when dad finally ‘fessed up. Every year, he explained, he would hire a few, young teachers to visit our house on Christmas Eve. They would carefully throw snowballs on the roof to look like Santa’s footprints had gone directly to the chimney.

After this was accomplished, the cunning culprits would take a long pole wrapped with bells, to make Santa’s sleigh bells ring through our bedroom windows.

Immediately, I decided to co-opt my father ’s devious designs for my own children. Fortunately, our house had a flat deck roof just outside of the master bedroom, and the chimney is located right outside the window.

So, being a dutiful and devious dad, I step outside my window every year on Christmas Eve, to deck the deck. To assure the authenticity of my hoax, I always attach the hoof of a whitetail deer to a hockey stick with duct tape. Then, I carefully slip outside into the cold, evening air.

Stepping out the window, I walk backwards from the chimney to where Santa’s sleigh was allegedly parked. With the blade of the stick, I

inscribe lines where the sleigh runners landed and with the hoof, I track the roof with authentic reindeer prints. I’ve always been careful to insure the prints are legible from the window, since my daughters could identify deer tracks from a young age.

Of course, this is all accomplished in the wee hours of the morning. Earlier in the evening, before they go to sleep, I always attach Santa’s sleigh bells to a long, pruning pole and ring them outside of their bedroom windows.

Like clockwork, on Christmas morning, the girls will rush to pull open the curtains and peer out the window to insure Santa made his appointed rounds.

Then, the family flocks downstairs to the Christmas tree, set up in the fireplace room. Cookies left for Santa are always eaten, and his cup of milk is empty. As presents spill out from under our tree, a tiny spark of Christmases past is gently reignited inside of me. Although my girls are now grown, the annual ritual continues and it seems to preserve the joys and wonders of their childhood days.

However, there was one year, where I came tragically close to ending the tradition. It happened in the

late evening hours, as I silently slipped out the bedroom window with a hoofed, hockey stick in hand to set down the tracks.

In my haste to get the job done, I completely forgot that the old, flat roof had recently been replaced with a brand new, shiny, red metal roof. Of course, our new roof had been constructed with a proper pitch intended to shed the snow.

I held onto the window frame as I backed out the window onto the new roof. It was covered with a light dusting of fresh snow and as I turned to set the tracks, I began to slide. I knew I was on the way to a hard fall.

In desperation, I hooked the windowsill with the stick and called to my wife for help. Fortunately, I made it back, unharmed and the tradition has continue. Although the girls are grown, and I know they know the jig is up; I continue to venture out the window every Christmas Eve (safely secured by a safety rope). It is still important to me to ensure they can see Santa’s sleigh still tracks our roof.

And even though my parents are both now gone, I have the sneaking suspicion they continue to keep an eye on these Irish-inspired shenanigans that serve to keep their original, magical Christmas efforts alive.

What’s the difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack?

M

any people mistakenly assume cardiac arrest and heart attack are the same thing. However, sudden cardiac arrest is not a heart attack. In fact, there are distinguishable differences between the two that are best explained by detailing what is actually happening when someone is suffering from either one.

What happens during a heart attack?

During a coronary attack, or heart attack, blockage occurs in one or more of the heart’s arteries. That blockage subsequently prevents the heart from receiving enough oxygenrich blood.

According to the American Heart Association’s Web site www.heart.org, the buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances create plaque in the arteries, making blood flow slower.

“When a plaque in a heart artery breaks, a blood clot forms around the plaque,” states the site. “This blood clot can block the artery and shut off blood flow to the heart muscle. When the heart muscle is starved for oxygen and nutrients, it is called ischemia.”

When damage to the heart muscle happens from ischemia, that is when a heart attack can occur.

Research indicates many people with symptoms of a heart attack actually delay seeking treatment for more than two hours.

In a 2010 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers found the average delay in arriving at the hospital after the start of a heart attack was roughly two and a half hours. Eleven percent of the more than 100,000 cases examined in the study waited more than 12 hours from the start of symptoms before seeking treatment. Those symptoms can include chest discomfort, shortness of breath and discomfort in other areas of the body that do no improve after five minutes.

What happens during cardiac arrest?

When a person is experiencing cardiac arrest, their heart’s electrical system is malfunctioning and suddenly becomes irregular. The heart begins to beat very fast while the ventricles may flutter or quiver. Blood is not being delivered to the

body during cardiac arrest, and a genuine fear is that blood flow to the brain will be reduced so drastically a person may lose consciousness.

Unlike a heart attack, cardiac arrest requires immediate treatment. It’s best to seek treatment promptly for both a heart attack and cardiac arrest, but those experiencing cardiac arrest are at much greater risk of death if treatment is not sought immediately.

According to AHA, the most common arrhythmia, or irregular heart rhythm, is known as ventricular fibrillation — when the heart’s lower chambers start to be chaotically and stop pumping blood.

“Death occurs within minutes after the heart stops,” according to www.heart.org. “Cardiac arrest may be reversed if [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] is performed and a defibrillator is used to shock the heart and restore a normal heart rhythm within a few minutes.”

Men and women, young and old, should also keep in mind that heart attack can sometimes lead into cardiac arrest, highlighting the importance of seeking treatment as soon as any symptoms of heart attack begin to appear.

How to prevent heart attack, cardiac arrest The goal is to keep blood flowing through the body as smoothly as possible. This means avoiding blood clots and the build-up of plaque in the arteries. That might sound simple enough, but plaque build-up and the process of coronary artery disease has been shown to begin as far back as childhood, when diets are not typically tailored to avoid heart disease.

While it’s impossible to go back in time and change certain lifestyle habits, including diet and exercise routines and regimens, there are ways adults can reduce the build-up of plaque, which can help them avoid falling victim to heart attack and cardiac arrest.

• Exercise regularly. At least 30 minutes of daily exercise is recommended.

• Eat a healthy diet. A diet low in saturated fat, which almost always equates to eating less red meat, and high in fruits and vegetables is ideal.

• Stop smoking. For those who have never smoked or have quit smoking, keep it up. Those who have or continue to smoke, stop.

• Don’t procrastinate. These changes can’t wait until tomorrow. The process or coronary artery disease doesn’t wait for adulthood, and adults who need to make changes cannot afford to drag their feet. The good news is studies have indicated even those with heart disease can expect to live longer if they simply commit to the necessary lifestyle changes.

According to Katherine McCarthy, American Heart Association’s senior regional director, communications, people should also take the time to learn CPR. “Since cardiac arrest can happen anytime, anywhere, it’s imperative that people learn CPR,” she said. “Recent updates to guidelines advise ‘hands only’ should someone collapse, without doing breaths. This means pushing hard and fast in the middle of the person’s chest, to the beat of ‘Staying Alive,’ 100 beats per minute.”

Nutrition’s effect on your metabolism I

t all starts with food. Everybody requires a specific amount of food to meet your metabolic needs. This is called your basal metabolic rate or BMR. Your BMR is how many calories you need to consume on a daily basis in order for your body to perform its daily functions.

When you consume fewer calories than is required, your body goes into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism as a result. Many times dieters believe if they eat less, they will weigh less. This may work for a week or so but after about three days, your metabolism starts to slow and eventually you will stop seeing results. So what does one usually do? They eat less, which in turn slows your metabolism even more! When this happens, dieters are really setting themselves up for fat loss failure. When you’re not giving your body the nutrition it needs, it starts to use its own lean muscle mass for fuel. Loosing muscle mass is exactly what you DO NOT want to happen when your goal is to lose fat. You want to increase your lean muscle mass with a combination of proper nutrition and strength training to increase your lean muscle mass. When you increase your lean muscle mass, not only will you be stronger, but your metabolism will speed up as well. The more lean

muscle you have, the more calories you will burn on a daily basis, which will in turn, result in the loss of body fat when eating properly.

So, if your main goal is fat loss, education is key.

Learn how to balance the calories you are consuming with your activity levels to maximize fat loss. PLATTSBURGH — Students in Kerri Chase’s class are learning about giving back.

Chase’s life skills/special education class at Stafford Middle School delivered five handmade blankets to residents at Evergreen Valley Nursing Home Dec. 16 as part of a community service project. The project, said Chase, involved working with home and careers teacher Cathleen Whalen and occupational therapy advisor April Myers-Lautenschuetz, coordinated by Champlain Valley Family Center ’s Learn and Serve program.

The students had to measure, cut and double-knot the fabric, which helped greatly from an occupational therapy standpoint, said Chase, to help the students improve their motor skills. They then created cards which they put with the blankets in gift bags for the residents, rounding out the two-week project.

Student Zack Buskey said he enjoyed the project because of how much work was in-

volved and knowing how much it meant to the residents.

“We measured them twice and cut them and taped them,” Buskey explained of the process. “Then, we went to the nursing home and gave them to people. It was good. They were happy.”

Lavelle Moorehead, another student in Chase’s class, said he was happy to see the residents were grateful, adding he could tell by the looks in their eyes.

“That made me feel good,” he said, adding he also liked being able to take pictures with the residents holding the blankets.

Chase and teaching assistant Charlene Barry said they were happy to see the students get so much out of the project.

“It was wonderful to stand back and watch how proud the kids were to give the residents the blankets,” said Chase.

“It definitely had its emotional moments,” Barry said of the donations being made. “Especially when the students gave out the first one. It was a good project.”

Recreation dept. hosting activities for kids

The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department has several activities planned for kids over winter recess. The programs, which will be offered free to any town resident, are designed to keep kids off the couch during the next week.

“We want kids to get out and be active rather than inside playing video games,” said recreation program coordinator Erin Pangborn. “We’re offering different activities because we know not everyone likes the same

The recreation department will offer: • Ice skating at the Plattsburgh State Field House Monday, Dec. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 30, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., with free skate rentals available.

• Archery classes at Gander Mountain from 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 27 and Wednesday, Dec. 29, with equipment also provided, however space is limited.

• Bowling at North Bowl Lanes Sunday, Jan. 2, at 8:30 a.m., with registration at 8 a.m.

Children can bowl up to three games and receive shoe rentals at no charge.

John Johnson reappointed to SUNY College Council post Alice Hyde CEO returns after 3 years PLATTSBURGH — A North Country hospital administrator has been reappointed to the College Council at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh.

John W. Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone, was recently re-appointed by Gov. David A. Paterson. Johnson will fill the position previously held by M. Catherine Hollinshead, whose term ended this year.

The College Council is not new to Johnson. He had previously served on it from June 2001 through December 2007.

Arnold Amell, council chair, said Johnson was a very dedicated member during that time and looked forward to his return.

Amell added he was sorry to see Hollinshead leave the council.

“She has been a very faithful member,” he said. “She is glad to know that John is her replacement.”

Walking with purpose Fourth grade classes from Momot Elementary recently engaged their school and community in Geography Awareness Week. As a service learning project, Michelle Gottschall, Melissa Caraballo, and Carla Ensel’s classes were advocates for raising awareness of clean water. Students learned fresh water facts as well learning what they can do to help, both globally and locally. They educated their peers and their families on simple ways to help preserve the natural resource. The students culminated their week with a 3.7-mile walk that symbolized the average distance women and children in underdeveloped countries walk to find drinking water.

Patriots score a win over Knights 60-17

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Ausable Valley Central varsity girls basketball team defeated the lady Seton Knights 60-17 in a Dec. 17 match-up.

The Patriots’ Alexis Coolidge scored 21 points, followed by Alexis Facteau with 17, including seven for nine from the free throw line.

Seton coach Matthew Walentuk credited AVCS for playing “great defense” and rebounding well.

“We could not rebound against them at all,” said Walentuk. “They had many offensive rebounds.”

The AVCS girls forced Seton to have 22 turnovers in the game, with no one on the Seton team scoring more than four points.

AVCS coach Roger Long said his team was able to contain Seton’s ball handling with their pressure defense, limiting them to one shot on the offensive end.

“We were able to move the ball well against their zone taking a high percentage of our shots inside the paint, and we got to the free throw line quite a bit,” said Long.

Following the game, AVCS was positioned at 30 in division standings and 3-1 overall, with a loss coming to the hands of Franklin Academy 59-56.

“We’re going to struggle to score a lot of points this year,” said Walentuk, remarking about his outlook for the rest of the season, “in order to have a chance we have to score in the 30s and hold our opponents to the same. We will struggle against Class B schools that press us.”

Peru ousts B’town in 60-40 win

East Coast Snocross coming to town soon

PLATTSBURGH — Hundreds of snowmobile competitors from Canada, New England, New York and Pennsylvania will be in Plattsburgh Saturday, Jan. 8, and Sunday, Jan. 9, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino races.

Airborne Speedway is facilitating the two-day event, which is round two of the East Coast Snocross Series presented by Woody’s Traction Control and Amsoil. The action will unfold at the Crete Memorial Civic Center on a winding course with large jumps constructed on site.

The East Coast Snocross Series is the nation’s largest regional racing series. Snowmobile racers will compete in Pro Stock, Pro Am, Pro Open, Semi Pro and amateur classes.

Della Motorsports and Casella Waste Management are co-sponsoring the event.

Tickets may be purchased at Della Motorsports and Aaron’s, both in Plattsburgh.

Beekmantown coach Greg Waters admitted Kezar ’s three-pointers was key in their loss.

“She’s a good veteran player who stepped up in a big situation,” Waters said. “That ended up being the difference in the ball game.”

However, Beekmantown’s Shannon Ryan was able to keep the score close by adding up 25 of the team’s 40 points.

“Beekmantown played a great game and hung in in the game,” said Peru’s coach Ryon O’Connell.

In all, Kezar totaled 23 points for Peru, followed by Sam Martin with 12, Emily Decker with 11, Mary Mazzella with six, Raelyn Passino with four, and Meg Barber and Katie Bruno with two apiece.

For Beekmantown, Emily Anderson held the second place high-scorer with nine, followed by Grace Kelly with four, and Rylei Porter with two.

Napier national hero on the track, battlefield

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — In the past year, John Napier has experienced one wild ride.

First, Napier jumped into the headlines as a rising star in the United State Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, capturing gold in Lake Placid last year.

Then, he captured headlines when he left the national bobsledding team to join another national team: the United States military.

“I was really passionate about deploying,” Napier said, who served with the 86th Army Brigade in the 3rd Battalion-172nd Infantry.

“I was deploying either way, if the spot in the bobsled was there for me when I came back or not. Luckily, Brian Shimmer (USA head coach) was able to hold a spot for me.”

From June until one month ago, Napier was stationed in the Afghan province of Patika, where he an his comrades were the first military presence in the area.

“We were sent there to secure an

outpost in Patika and make sure that the Taliban knew that there was a military presence there,” said Napier.

Such a mission was quite the concern at home for his mother, Elizabeth “Betsey” Napier, who has been a long-time volunteer at the bobsledding complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

“It is very good to see him back from Afghanistan,” Elizabeth said.

“I think that he is getting back into the swing of things. He really enjoys racing, but anyone coming back from that is going to have some issues that they have to deal with and it will take longer than a month to do that.”

Both Napier ’s said they were able to stay in contact and assure each other that the other was fine during the six-month deployment.

“We had one satellite phone that was able to be used by the men, so I would try to call once every couple of days and that call would almost always be used on my mother,” John said.

Now, though, John can see his mother every day, and she can see him as he crosses the finish line

during each run, something that he did for a seventh-place finish at this weekends World Cup event in Lake Placid.

“I was kind of worried about how I was going to be my first few trips down the track,” Napier said.

“But after the first two or three weeks, it was just like I was back doing what I was supposed to be doing.”

Napier said those first runs came five days after he had returned from active service, and two days before a World Cup event.

“It was a wired feeling, but as soon as I got out to the track and got in the sled, it started feeling better and better,” he said.

Napier said while he was happy to be back, the time served as a member of the military helped him re-focus on life and sliding.

“I have spent 16 years where bobsledding is the only thing that I have thought about,” Napier said. “I achieved my goal and I made it to the Olympics. After that, there was a little burn out. Being deployed was the hard break that I needed and I am refreshed and ready to go.”

PLATTSBURGH — As new smart phones are hung by the chimney with care, what will St. Nicholas do with the phones of last year?

Good question.

According to a study by Gatner, an information technology research and advisory company, approximately 1.21 billion cell phones were sold in 2009. With hot new items coming out this year such as Motorola’s Droid or the Samsung Epic from Sprint, one has to wonder what will happen all those old cell phones.

Thankfully, people living in Clinton County, especially, have many options that don’t include putting their old phones away in a drawer, and one of them is making a profit.

The Cellular Exchange, located at 21 Bridge St., is a business strictly for selling and buying previously owned cell phones.

Business owner Jeffrey LaValley opened the store in October and since has seen more than 100 phones come in and out of his store.

The Cellular Exchange, he explained, will not only purchase your old cell phone but will resell fairly new cell phones to customers at almost half the price of buying them at major cell phone retailers.

“Someone can buy a phone through me

and know it works,” LaValley said. “Everybody breaks their cell phone, I’ve had people come in and say their cell phone got stolen or they cracked their screen. I’ve had quite a few people who say they don’t want to pay Verizon or Sprint phones because of how expensive they are from retailers, and I have a phone here for everyone.”

Selling your cell can help you pay for a new cell phone or even help cover the cost of those Christmas gifts you threw on your credit card. Most of all, reselling your phone keeps it out of the landfill, making it an environmentally-friendly option.

Another way to help the planet and remain guilt free about no longer using a perfectly useful cell phone? Donate it to a local charity.

Several cell phone drop box locations are in Clinton County, including STOP Domestic Violence, Total Computer Supply and Accessories Inc., Staples, and Verizon Wireless. It’s also a good idea for people interested in donating their phones to call ahead to make sure there is storage space for the phone.

Whether donating or selling your old phone, however, always make sure to discontinue service of the phone. Also, be sure to remove any personal information from the phone such as contacts, photos, messages, or anything else you don’t want shared with the next person to use your phone.

CEFLS donations are tax-deductible PLATTSBURGH — As the year draws to a close, if you’re still in the gift-giving mood, the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System may have just what you need.

The CEFLS offers a variety of gift-giving opportunities that are also tax-deductible. such as the $25 “Bookworm Promoter” donor level, which will provide the library system with funding to purchase one book.

The donor ’s name will be printed on a bookplate that will be affixed inside the front of the book.

The “Booklovers’ Collection Supporter,” with a donation from $100-$1,000, provides opportunities for donors to specify that their gift is to be used to purchase a particular genre of books. Book genres include: Adult Fiction Aficionado, Adult Nonfiction Admirer, Biographies and History Buff, Children’s Book Champion, Cookbook Enthusiast, Finance and Investment Follower, Health and Well-being Disciple, Mystery Mentor, Romance Novel Lover, and Young Adult Book Advocate.

Fans of the library system’s Bookmobile may wish to designate their donation be used to underwrite the Bookmobile’s satel-

lite Internet connection, fuel purchases or regular maintenance and operations.

Library lovers may also choose to make an unrestricted donation at one of the seven levels available from “The Mouse that Roared” ($1-$99) to “From Here to Eternity” ($3,000 and up). Individuals, families, or organizations are invited to make a tax-deductible donation in any amount to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Gifts can be designated to be “In Honor of” someone special or “In Memory of” a deceased loved one.

The mission of the C-E-F Library System is to foster and improve public library service to the residents of the service area. The Bookmobile, well-known throughout the North Country, regularly travels to more than 60 stops, bringing books, large-print books, tapes, magazines, Interlibrary Loan services, CDs and DVDs to residents living in areas with no local library or to those with limited access to a library.

Team Grease dishes out unconventional sound

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com OLEAN — Team Grease’s Noah Kenyon and Brady Gaynor believe their uniqueness is their main attraction.

The group, which formed in August 2009, began with Kenyon on drums and Gaynor on violin “jamming to old Irish traditional [songs],” but soon Kenyon moved to guitar and vocals, and they began writing originals.

With influences such as Neil Young, gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello, and American folk punk band Andrew Jackson Jihad, it makes sense why the duo describes themselves the way they do.

“Our sound is really hard to describe,” admitted Kenyon. “I don’t really play guitar in the conventional sense because I started out as a drummer and just taught myself to play guitar and Brady is classically trained, so it ends up meshing into a gypsyishfolk-horror-movie soundtrack.”

However, they still maintain they are original.

“I can’t think of any other band out there that sounds like us,” said Kenyon. “Some of our songs also have a very seductive and ominous vibe to them, that could also bring people to like our sound.”

Currently, the band has been playing local shows in their town of Olean, and branching out into Buffalo and Ithaca, but they’ll be hitting the Plattsburgh circuit for the first time Dec. 30.

That evening, beginning at 7 p.m., there will be an assault awareness event

at Koffee Kat, which Team Grease is happy to be a part of.

“As much as we dig playing shows for fun, we are very excited to be playing a show for a real cause,” said Gaynor. “We read about [Chris Rigsbee] and his girlfriend’s assault and it was very upsetting and also sounded too familiar because of too much abundance of violence, so it is an honor to be playing a raising-awareness show.”

Kenyon also believes a New Year ’s Eve show in Plattsburgh will be announced at the Dec. 30 event.

Assault brings awareness On Dec. 16, nearly 20 people braved the cold for three hours during a violence awareness protest on Broad Street after two local residents, Christopher Rigsbee and Darcel Downing, were attacked there Nov. 19. The violence awareness message will continue Dec. 30, at 7 p.m., at the Koffee Kat, where a public forum will be held for people to tell their stories of assault. There will also be music by Team Grease, Joey Todd, and Peter House.

Delivery service brings downtown food to your front door

Jamse Ward, owner of Cheechako Taco, recently began the Downtown Delivery Service, which brings food from seven downtown restaurants to your front door.

“We knew we needed to do delivery for this place in order to run this business during the winter time,” explained Ward of Cheechako Taco. “Because people don’t want to leave ... their homes. They want comfort, they want warmth.

They’d rather pay the small delivery fee than go through all the hassle to receive the food.”

After a discussion with Adirondack Soup Company owner Chris Dominianni, Ward took it upon himself to be the delivery man for seven downtown restaurants.

“Jamse and I are both small business owners and I had talked about wanting to have a delivery service and he had talked about the same kind of thing,” explained Dominianni. “I said, ‘If you’re willing to start it up, we’d be willing to come on board with you.’”
