Violent assault leads to awareness event Dec. 30

PLATTSBURGH — In the early morning of Nov. 19, Christopher Rigsbee and his girlfriend, Darcel Downing, had planned to walk to a friend’s house from a downtown bar. Instead, they ended up in the emergency room of CVPH Medical Center. “[We were] just on Broad Street walking to a friend’s house,” Rigsbee recalled. “We just wanted to eat chicken wings. We were both assaulted by people that are at large.

It was a gang assault.”

Rigsbee explained as they were walking, a group of guys called him “hateful, homophobic names,” and he approached them.

“They pushed me and of course I was a little drunk and pushed back,” he said. “That was when they punched me.”

While Rigsbee was being assaulted, his girlfriend tried to break up the fight.

“She tried to pull some of the guys off me while she was screaming at them to stop,” he said. “One

of the guys punched her in the face.

So, needless to say, she backed up and just tried to scream for help. No one came out of their homes.”

Rigsbee said during the assault, his glasses fell to the ground, making it difficult for him to see and defend himself. “[They] ended it with grabbing the back of my head and bashing it against the sidewalk,” he said.

“The dentist had to pull bits of gravel out of my gums and bits of shattered teeth.”

Rigsbee, who has no health insurance, said he lost three teeth, with a fourth one probably going to need to be pulled in the near future.

“This is just the beginning of what seems like it’s going to be months and maybe a couple years of dental procedures,” he said.

After Rigsbee’s friend, Matt Hall, heard of the assault, he began planning an assault awareness event, to be held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Koffee Kat. The event is free, although donations will be accepted to offset some of Rigsbee’s medical bills.

Chefy’s Toys for Tots this weekend

sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — For the last eight years, Chris “Chefy” Duquette has been partying for a good cause.

This Saturday, Dec. 18, Duquette will host his annual Chefy’s Toys for Tots Benefit Party at Geoffrey’s Pub, 5453 Peru St., with admission being one unwrapped toy for a $5 donation to benefit the Christmas Bureau’s Toys for Tots.

“It started out as a house party and it just got to be too much,” said Duquette.

Three years ago, Duquette decided to have the party at Geoffrey’s Pub instead of his own home.

He also began working with Plattsburgh Distributing, who provides large stockings that are brought to local businesses for them to collect toys as well.

“Last year, we were at 20 locations,” said Duquette. “Mostly, we were in local bars and restaurants. But, this year, we’re at 36.”

Nearly 8,000 toys were collected last year, but this year Duquette is aiming for 10,000.

“We would never have thought in a million years how many donations we would get, from all the small mom and pop places,” he said. “Like The Fourth Ward, The Store Tavern.”

This year, Duquette explained they also added corporations into the collection, such as Schluter Systems and Mold-Rite Plastics.

Duquette, along with his cohorts — Rodney Provost, who is now retired from Plattsburgh Distributing, and Judge Tom Douglas — will spend all day this Friday, Dec. 17, collecting toys from these businesses.

Then, the next day, will be the party, with even more toys added to the collection. “[People] bring bags and boxes full,” said Duquette. “Some people bring one, some people bring 20.”

The party will begin at 7 p.m., with C.R. Tunes and Photography deejaying from 8 p.m. to midnight. Party-goers can also have

Some toys Duquette hopes people will consider bringing are those for teenagers.

“I always tell people to get older toys — for the teenagers,” he said. “Because everyone always brings the Barbies and cars and stuffed animals.”

The final portion of Duquette’s toy collec-

tion is when he brings them to The Christmas Bureau.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “All those little old ladies come out and they tear right up.

It’s a great feeling.”

PLATTSBURGH — Catherine Gardens is now a reality.

The Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County and Affordable Housing Limited marked the opening the affordable housing project on North Catherine Street with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting Dec. 10.

The 31-unit development — consisting of one- and two-bedroom apartments — was built on the site of the former Mount Assumption Institute, previously owned by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, and sold to the SCCCC. The $8 million investment converted the longvacant and partially-blighted block to a use that is expected to meet the needs of senior citizens and low-income families “while maintaining the character and history of the neighborhood.”

Affordable Housing Unlimited owner George Hezel said the project took “vision of a particular sort” to make it possible, crediting Brothers of Christian Instruction, the SCCCC, elected officials and all others involved.

“Throughout this process of three or four years of developing this site, we listened carefully to the people and what they were saying they wanted for this site and I think we have sculpted a plan that makes great sense,” said Hezel.

The development required forging partnerships and series of collaborations with many members of the community, said Hezel, and persistence over “many obstacles.”

“The years 2008 and 2009 hit like a ton of bricks and we found ourselves hard-pressed to make the financing work out,” Hezel said, referring to the national recession. “Nevertheless, with a great leap of faith, we moved forward.”

Brother Raymond Fortin read a statement on behalf of Brother Jerome Lesard of Brothers of Christian Instruction, expressing their satisfaction with the transformation of the former Mount Assumption Institute.

“This fortress of a building has served generations of students in both classrooms and dormitories. And, now, another clientele will benefit from its inviting and welcoming open doors,” stated Fortin. “We hope that a community of caring people will enjoy living on this block, offering support and watching for one another.”

“Thanks to God — and his many assistants — the dream has become a reality,” he added.

State Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, RPeru, said she was glad to see the project come to a close, making her now able to store away the file for the project after years of attention and dedication to the development.

“The file I have on Catherine Gardens takes up a whole lot of space in my filing cabinet, partly because of the hundreds — literally hundreds — of support letters I received in the beginning [for the project],” said Duprey. “This is a great way to kick off the holiday season.”

SCCCC executive director Maria Alexander, who took on the project for her predecessor, Kathleen Hazel, said the seed planted years ago for the project is finally reaping its rewards.

“Today, our seed begins to bear fruit,” said Alexander. “This is a legacy that will benefit the community for decades to come.”

In the event you are stranded, Smith suggested emergency items are prepacked in your vehicle, including a blanket or sleeping bag, flashlight, warm gloves, handwarmers, flares, first aid kit, hat, insulated footwear, shovel, bag of salt, tow rope, ice scraper and snowbrush.

Before starting a trip, Smith said drivers should check the weather forecast, start their vehicle for a few minutes before departing, clean all snow and ice from the vehicle, ensure the windshield is clear of frost, let a friend or relative know when you are leaving and when you expect to arrive at your destination, and leave plenty of time to arrive without having to rush.

Smith also urged motorists to drive slow and adjust speed to the conditions of the road. Maintaining proper following distance and wearing your seatbelt are also tips he offered.

“Winter hazards can be the most dangerous of all the driving situations we face,” stated Smith ... I hope by following these tips we can reduce the number of accidents and the number of people injured.”

Regal Cinemas offering a free movie this weekend

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Public Library will host another “Illegitimate Son of Mystery Science Theater 3000” movie screening Friday, Dec. 17, at the Plattsburgh Public Library, 19 Oak St. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. in the library’s auditorium and will be a screening of an obscure movie to point out some of the more humorous flaws. PLATTSBURGH — Though the first day of winter isn’t officially recognized until Dec. 21, the weather outside told a different story earlier this week.

Motorists across the region found themselves digging out from a snowstorm that hit late Monday night, leaving several inches of accumulation through Tuesday morning.

The weather made a recent announcement by state police Maj. Robert C. Smith Jr. pertinent, in which Smith issued a reminder to motorists to be aware of increased hazards of winter driving with the changing seasons.

“I know there are those of us who don't look forward to the coming of winter nor do we look forward to driving under less than perfect conditions,” stated Smith. “Winter is coming and with it the hazards of snow, ice and cold temperatures. However, there are a number of actions that each one of us as motor vehicle operators can take to make our winter driving safer for ourselves and those whom we share the road with.”

Smith recommended motorists adjust their driving attitudes, noting attitude is “the most important factor in safe driving.”

“A good attitude means putting safety first and focusing your attention on your driving,” he stated.

Smith also recommended motorists go over a checklist of items to prepare on their vehicles for the winter season. Items include: • Antifreeze • Windshield wipers and nonfreezing windshield wash

Laurentian multi-million dollar project moves forward

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Laurentian Aerospace Corporation has secured funding it needs to take the next step in establishing a presence in the town of Plattsburgh.

Andrew Edwards, chief financial officer and senior vice president of finance for Laurentian, announced Verdant Capital Group LLC will invest, alongside the management group, the capital required to allow Laurentian to begin an estimated $175 million project to construct a state-of-the-art maintenance repair and overhaul facility for wide-body aircraft at the Plattsburgh International Airport.

“We could not be happier with the partnership that we struck with Verdant,” said Edwards. “They share our vision of making this a world-class facility.

The securing of financing is considered the next step in the process for Laurentian locating a facility in the town, said Edwards, which has been a process that dates back to 2006.

The closing of the financing is subject to a number of conditions, said Edwards, including “Verdant’s completion of final due diligence, the execution of definitive agreements and the absence of any material adverse change in the financial markets.”

However, Edwards said Verdant and Laurentian are “confident” the transaction will be successfully completed on or before March 1, with construction of a single hangar facility expected to begin in April. Construction would take approximately 18 months after necessary engineering work is completed, said Andrews.

The new facility is expected to employ approximately 900 people within the first two years af-

ter construction is completed, said Andrews. The highest paid employees would likely be Federal Aviation Administrationcertified mechanics, he added, who could earn somewhere between $75,000 and $80,000.

Rep. William L. Owens, DPlattsburgh, applauded the efforts of all involved for getting Laurentian to this milestone.

“If there’s an event that’s going to change the face of Plattsburgh, it is this event,” said Owens. “I’m happy for Laurentian, but, in truth, I’m most happy for Plattsburgh.”

Edwards said he is enthusiastic about the progress made so far, but will celebrate when closing on the project’s financing is finalized in March.

Adirondack Coast unveils new Destination Master Plan

During a presentation of the bureau’s new Destination Master Plan at Clinton Community College Dec. 10, members of the general public were given a look at the future of the region as painted by a strategic tourism planning committee comprised of local community leaders. The 25-page document outlines how the North Country can capitalize on its reputation for being a Mecca for outdoor recreation enthusiasts and on its rich history — particularly in its role during the War of 1812.

Michele Powers, director of the Adirondack Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau, said its was clearly laid out in discussions with committee members that there hasn’t been enough done to promote the history of the area, especially in regard to being the home of the Battle of Plattsburgh and Battle of Valcour.

“We believe that the community, once they see the plan, the vision, will be ready to invest in it,” said Smith.

Powers said the committee’s next move will be to reconvene in January to break out into various committees, with each committee member given an action item on which to follow up.

Plattsburgh woman treated for injuries after being rear-ended

Teenager arrested for breaking into local building

PLATTSBURGH — A student from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh is facing criminal charges for falsely reporting a sexual assault.

According to University Police, the female student recanted her accusation that on Dec. 8, around 5:30 a.m. an unknown male pinned her against a tree behind Macdonough Hall and grabbed her in the vaginal area.

PLATTSBURGH — Twenty-year-old Brittany L. Hoffman, Plattsburgh, was injured Dec. 4, when she was reportedly rear-ended by another vehicle that left the scene.

Hoffman was headed eastbound on Route 3 around 5 p.m. when she slowed to avoid another vehicle.

An unidentified vehicle that was following Hoffman struck her from behind according to Plattsburgh-based State Police.

Hoffman was transported to CVPH Medical Center with pain in her neck. She was treated and later released.

PLATTSBURGH — A 14-year-old Plattsburgh teen faces felony charges after he allegedly burglarized a local building.

The Clinton County Sheriff ’s Department said they arrested the boy at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 4, after receiving a report he allegedly broke into a local building and made off with property. He then reportedly tried to return the property to a local store for money.

Deputies charged the boy with third-degree burglary, a felony, and petit larceny, a misdemeanor.

He was released into the custody of his parents and is due to appear in Clinton County Family Court at a later date.

Teen suffers minor injuries after avoiding collision with animal CHESTERFIELD — Plattsburgh-based State Police said 16-year-old Taylor L. Bourdeau was taken to CVPH Medical Center Dec. 9, after swerving off Dugway Road around 1:30 p.m. to avoid hitting a fox, crashing into a nearby embankment.

Bourdeau was reportedly treated and released for minor injuries.

Man arrested for breaking into room at Beacon Motel PLATTSBURGH — Police arrested Chad Willis, 38, Plattsburgh, Dec. 3, for allegedly breaking into his neighbor ’s room at the Beacon Motel.

Willis allegedly committed the crime sometime before 1:50 p.m. Nov. 28.

Police arrested him at 2:11 p.m. and charged him with second-degree burglary, a felony.

He was arraigned the same day in the Town of Plattsburgh Court and remanded to Clinton County Jail without bail.

Deputies arrest drunk driver BEEKMANTOWN — Clinton County Sheriff ’s deputies stopped 51-year-old William Pelt Dec. 8, after he was seen allegedly swerving in and out of traffic.

Authorities believe Pelt, of Beekmantown, was under of the influence of drugs and alcohol and allegedly forced drivers off the road to avoid crashing.

Pelt allegedly failed field-sobriety tests and refused to take a chemical test. He was taken into custody for the charges of driving while intoxicated and driving while impaired by drugs, both misdemeanors.

Pelt was also cited for driving without a license, refusing the test, moving from the lane unsafely and failing to use a turn signal.

He was arraigned in Plattsburgh Town Court and sent to Clinton County Jail on $1,000 cash bail, which he later posted.

He is scheduled to appear in Beekmantown Court later this month to face the allegations.

Lucia arrested for violating terms of probation PLATTSBURGH — Clinton County Sheriff ’s Department arrested Gene Lucia, 32, Plattsburgh, Dec. 3, for allegedly violating the terms of his probation.

The Sheriff ’s Department said Lucia was sentenced to five years of probation in 2008 for multiple felonies.

He was sent to Clinton County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

Town lists holiday hours PLATTSBURGH — Holiday hours have been set for the town of Plattsburgh.

The town hall will close at noon Dec. 23, and will be closed Dec. 24. Normal business hours will resume Monday, Dec. 27. There will be no office hours New Year ’s Eve, Dec. 31, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 17.

Getting a new computer Dangers of health care fraud

T

here may be some new computers under the tree this year. Being tech support for family and friends I wanted to share my personal steps for setting up a new PC. The steps begin at another PC by downloading and saving to a flash drive Avira’s free for personal use antivirus software and Secunia’s Personal Software Inspector (www.free-av.com and www.secunia.com).

When setting up the new PC we leave the network cable, if applicable, disconnected because a few things are done that leave the PC temporarily vulnerable. The computer is booted and we do the initial set up. Without a connection to the Web we cannot activate Windows yet. If asked to connect to a wireless network do not connect yet.

Next we go to Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall all the junkware, especially the promotional or trial versions, that shipped with the PC including the antivirus program. (Users that are unsure can wait and uninstall software at a later time.) We install Avi-

ra and then go back to the Control Panel and check the security settings. The system may report the antivirus is out of date, but we know that and it won’t be out of date for long. We now connect the network cable and restart the PC (or just restart the PC and connect to a wireless network). Either way, the Web should now be accessible.

By Ron Poland We activate the OS and then go straight to Windows Update for the most current system updates. When that’s done we open Avira, update it and then install Secunia PSI and run it to bring all the third-party software up to date. The final step is to create a system restore point to save the current settings in case we must revert back to it in the future.

• Remember, if it is free — they don’t need your Medicare or Medicaid number.

• Never accept medical supplies or equipment from a door-to-door salesperson.

• Never let anyone look at your medical records or prescription medications unless you’ve contacted your physician or pharmacist and gotten their approval.

As strange as it may sound, unless you have benefited from Hospice services, our involvement does make a huge difference. There are the practical, tangible things done by the clinical staff. However there is also much more.

At a time in our society when it has become easy to be distant and isolated from others, Hospice of the North Country reaches out and touches. We listen, we reassure, we ask the kind of questions that open up dialogue and facilitate communication. Often we open the spigot for discussions that almost miraculously begin flowing between our patient and their families and that is truly wonderful.

Hospice of the North Country is a valuable resource in the North Country. Demand for our services continues to grow each year. We are quite proud of our new facility on Tom Miller Road in Plattsburgh that is helping us do an even better job of fulfilling our mission.

Applying your winter mulch

N

ow that we have had some consistently cold temperatures, it is time to consider heading out into the garden one last time this year. Now is an ideal time to consider applying a winter mulch. In the spring, we mulch our gardens to suppress weeds, retain moisture, feed the soil, and warm the soil. In the fall we mulch to add a layer or compost that conditions the soil.

The primary reason for winter mulching is to protect our plants from the harsh conditions of winter freezes, thaws and winds.

If we had snow cover throughout the winter, we would not have to worry about this.

Snow is an excellent insulator and regulator.

But, we cannot count on snow throughout the winter season. Adding a winter mulch gives our plants a reliable source of winter protection.

The main idea behind winter mulching is to keep the ground frozen by shielding it from the warmth of the sun and to insulate the soil against freeze-thaw cycles. A steady temperature will keep the plant in dormancy and prevent it from triggering new growth during a brief warm spell. Tender, new growth too soon will just result in more

winter die back. Mulching now will also help conserve whatever water is in the soil.

Adding a winter mulch is simple. Any loose, insulating material will do. Choose a material that is easy to handle and will be easy to remove in the spring. Shredded mulch, straw, pine needles or shredded leaves are all easy to remove or easy to work into the soil. Another easy to use, and environmentally friendly winter mulch is the cut boughs of your Christmas tree.

The rule of thumb is to remove winter mulch in the spring, when all danger of a hard frost is past. That’s sometimes very hard to judge here in the North Country, as anyone who’s experienced a May snowstorm can attest. However when the ground starts to thaw and the smell of mud is in the air, it’s time to start raking and removing the mulch so the ground can warm and new growth won’t be inhibited.

Understanding, overcoming a fear of the forest A

lthough a majority of current day civilization has learned to appreciate the benefits of nature and the natural world, it wasn’t always the case. From the earliest of times, societies have sought protection from the dangers of the natural world through the telling of tales and legends that were intended to ingrain children with a basic fear of the woods.

From Goldie Locks to Little Red Riding Hood to Sleepy Hollow’s Headless Horseman and continuing through such movies as Deliverance, the Blair Witch Project and The Village, mankind has conditioned children to fear the woods throughout the centuries.

Admittedly, the woods can be a mysterious and foreboding place and at times, it is only natural to fear what we hear but can’t see, especially at night. However, our greatest fears are the noises that come from creatures unknown. Often, these are the creatures that rest comfortably in our collective imagination.

In our mind’s eye, the forest conceals a host of wild animals, witches, demons, and a host of serial killers that lurk in the darkness, awaiting the innocent. This process plays on fears that already exist in most of us, it is also known as the boogieman complex.

Increasingly, American parents have grown afraid of letting their children to play in the yard, bicycle to school or hike in the woods, even though such irrational fears are not supported by the evidence or statistics. For many, the woods are a wild place that is unbound by man-made rules or codes. Sadly, many people live in fear of these wild and untamed elements.

The forest can conceal a variety of threats, both actual and imagined. Although it is a place where a man or child can become lost, never be found again, such incidents are a rarity. An unfounded fear of the forest is known as hylophobia and it affects far more people than most of us would ever expect.

Nyctohylophobia is the much more common fear and foreboding of journeying in the woods at night. It is a sense that you are not alone and it is a fear that can be debilitating for some. It is an affliction that extends far beyond the typical shivers and goose bumps that are expected after an evening of ghost stories around the campfire.

It is understandable that we have a greater fear of the unknown, than of the things that are known to us.

An overzealous imagination can create monsters far beyond any known to exist in the natural world, and as society continues to spiral into the depths of natural detachment; it is easy to understand the growing fear of the woods. We fear most, the things we least understand.

While hylophobia is largely an unfounded fear, there are at least a few psychological afflictions with a rational basis in the Great North Woods. These maladies would have to include Agrizoophobia, a fear of wild animals and Entomophobia, a fear of insects.

Anyone spending time in the Adirondacks during black fly season could easily justify becoming an Entomophobiac.

Likewise, many local residents surely suffer from Chionophobia, at some point in their life.

Around these parts, Chionophobia, an intense fear of snow is an understated reality, at almost anytime of the year.

Despite concerns over a growing fear of the woods, a recent study conducted for the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies offers ample evidence to alleviate such apprehensions. Researchers funded through a Multistate Conservation Grant of the Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Program, uncovered a wide range of benefits that can be attributed to spending time in the open air and learning outside.

The study suggests “a meaningful engagement with nature as a child has a direct correlation with involvement in environmental issues in the future, which should be of great interest as communities look for the next generation of environmental leaders.”

Additional research reveals that “people who participate in outdoor activities tend to be happier than those who do not and that active living may lead to a healthier lifestyle, based on the Leisure Trends Index” while “spending time in the open air and learning outside has also proven to increase students’ ability to think creatively and improve problem-solving skills.”

The study also found that “students who play and learn in outdoor settings perform better on tests, have higher grade point averages (GPAs),

cause fewer classroom disruptions”. It also found considerable evidence that “outdoor adventure programs can impact positively on young people’s attitudes, beliefs and self-perceptions.”

In general, the research indicates that among the benefits of outdoor education is an increase in self-concept domains such as independence, confidence, self-efficacy, and self-understanding.

Additional benefits include “enhanced psychological well-being; an increased ability to overcome challenges; a positive impact on leadership competencies; enhanced decision-making skills, general problem solving competencies, academic achievement and academic selfconcept. “ Time spent outdoors also resulted in “an increase in personality dimensions such as assertiveness, emotional stability, achievement motivation, internal focus of control, and maturity and reductions in aggression and neurosis.

It was also shown to improve mental strength and interpersonal dimensions such as social competence, co-operation and interpersonal communication skills.”

Regarding aspects of health, learning, and lifestyle, the study indicates that outdoor skills programs help to promote lifelong physical, emotional and spiritual well being.

According to the report, “a growing body of studies suggests that contact with nature is as important to children as good nutrition and adequate sleep: time spent outdoors correlates with increased physical activity and fitness in children; exposure to green space reduces crime, increases general well-being and the ability to focus; children as young as five have shown a significant reduction in the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) when they are engaged in outdoor activities in natural settings.”

The positive benefits that the research reveals should offer ample evidence for students, and faculty to address professed fears of the forest.

Understanding alcohol abuse and dependence T

he holidays can be a time of joy but for some, it can be a time of despair and depression. Those feelings can also be ones that plague a person throughout the year and can be linked to alcoholism.

Though the general public might not know the specifics, few men and women would be surprised to learn alcohol abuse and depression are often linked. However, it does remain a mystery to many people just why some individuals can have one or two drinks and not be dependent, while others must avoid alcohol entirely. To better understand why that is, it helps to understand what alcoholism is.

What is alcohol abuse?

Alcohol abuse refers to having unhealthy or potentially dangerous drinking habits. Those habits can include daily alcohol consumption or overconsumption of alcohol. Someone who abuses alcohol will continue to do so despite knowing their behavior is causing some problems in their life, be it relationship problems, problems at work, legal problems, or problems with friends and family members.

Men, women or even children who abuse alcohol are at risk of growing dependent. When a person is dependent on alcohol, that person is considered to be an alcoholic. The strong need or craving to drink is there, and an alcoholic will feel as if they need to drink to get through the day.

Is alcoholism hereditary?

In a report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, research indicated the familial transmission of alcoholism is at least in part genetic and not just the result of environment. Research is ongoing to determine just what it is that a person inherits that increases their vulnerability to alcoholism and how those inherited factors team with environment, but past research has indicated that a person’s susceptibility to alcoholism is at least partially genetic.

What indicates alcohol dependence?

A common misconception is that men and women who aren’t falling over while intoxicated or blacking out when they drink cannot be alcoholics. In fact, alcohol dependence can manifest itself in ways that don’t involve a person exhibiting any of that behavior. Men and women who have three or more of the following problems in a year might be dependent on alcohol.

• The need to drink more to get the same effect.

• An inability to quit drinking or control how alcohol is consumed.

• The appearance of withdrawal symptoms, or delirium tremens (DTs), when they stop drinking. The DTs may include hallucinations, confusion, irritability, trembling, and seizures.

• Previous unsuccessful attempts to quit drinking.

What warning signs might indicate a problem?

Certain warning signs also might indicate a sign of a growing problem with alcohol. Those signs include, but are not limited to, the following: • Feelings of guilt after drink.

• Making excuses to drink or attempting to hide how much you are drinking.

• Blackouts, or not remembering what you did while you were drinking.

• Drinking in the morning, drinking alone or binge drinking.

How are alcohol problems diagnosed?

Adults who have visited a doctor for a physical or even another routine checkup likely recall their doctor asking about

their alcohol consumption.

Doctors will inquire about the number of drinks consumed in a typical week, including how many might be downed in an average night. Any answers that raise the doctor ’s suspicions might result in a physical exam or a mental health assessment.

The mental health assessment will be conducted to determine if depression has begun to settle in. The physical examination will look for the physical symptoms, including cirrhosis, a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the inflammation and scarring have damaged the liver.

What if a problem is diagnosed?

If the doctor does determine there’s at least a problem with alcohol if not alcoholism, the doctor might recommend cutting back on alcohol consumption. Should the doctor diagnose alcoholism, treatment will be recommended. That treatment may include detoxification, which flushes alcohol out of the body. This can cause withdrawal symptoms that could very well prove quite painful. Group counseling, including Alcoholics Anonymous, has proven highly effective for millions of people who have suffered from alcoholism.

Men, women or children who feel they have an alcohol problem should seek help immediately.

Levitin honored by Plattsburgh State

jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Dr. Alexis Levitin has been recognized as the latest distinguished professor for the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Levitin was honored with the SUNY system distinction during a portrait unveiling ceremony at Plattsburgh’s State’s Feinberg Library Dec. 6. The professor was recognized for his dedication and accomplishments in translating Portuguese poetry into English.

Dr. Patricia Higgins, a professor of anthropology and interim provost and vice president of academic affairs, credited Levitin for being passionate about poetry and accumulating “an impressive body of work” in his field.

“As an anthropologist, I can appreciate some of the aspects of sort of cultural features,” said Higgins. “I can recognize you can’t really understand a language and translate a language without having a lot of understanding of the culture that’s behind that language ... I can really appreciate the depth of understanding that I know that Alexis has in the cultures from which he has translated poetry.”

“I think poetry, of all forms of oral expression, is even more difficult to understand in another language,” Higgins added. “Then, to take that understanding and to shape it into English in a way that the meaning ‚ not necessarily just the words — carry over, I think it truly an astounding thing to be able to do.”

Communications professor Dr. Jin Kim ap-

plauded Levitin for his career, particularly for his work in translating the works of Portuguese poet Eugenio de Andrade, “embodying the beauty, sensuality and mastery” of de Andrade’s works. “[Levitin’s] scholarly skills have been an invaluable service, helping English language readers discover literary beauty in Portuguese poetry, thus expanding the standard of literary appreciation across cultural boundaries,” said Kim. “There is hardly any translator in the U.S. who is not familiar with Alexis Levitin’s outstanding contribution to the field of literary and translational studies.”

SUNY Plattsburgh president Dr. John C. Ettling said the university’s students have been fortunate to have a professor like Levitin on staff and that Levitin represents some of the best faculty the college has to offer.

“Faculty and staff are the greatest strengths any college can have and that’s certainly the case here,” said Ettling. “The entire campus community is proud of what you have done.”

Sharing anecdotes from his near 30-year career with Plattsburgh State, Levitin reflected on his love of poetry and his work in translation.

“I think that translation of poetry is a little bit like transposing a piece of music from one instrument to another.

It’s all about music, though we don’t very often say that it is,” said Levitin. “For me, as a translator of poetry, it is the musical quality that I’m most interested in ... that I most seek to reproduce somehow.”

award, thanking those who made his nomination, and ultimately recognition, possible.

“I never really thought this would happen,” he said.

Levitin is the second SUNY Plattsburgh professor to receive the distinguished professorship — SUNY’s very highest honor. The first was Dr. Mark Cohen, a SUNY distinguished professor who has been credited for changing the way scientists think about civilization.

Levitin’s work has resulted in 30 books, and his translations have appeared in more

than 30 anthologies and hundreds of magazines and journals — including the American Poetry Review, Grand Street, Kenyon Review, the New England Review and the Partisan Review.

In addition to his latest recognition, Levitin has received a number of fellowships, grants and awards, including two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and two Fulbright Senior Lecturer Awards. Levitin holds a bachelor ’s degree of arts in zoology, a master ’s degree of arts in English and a Ph.D. in English — all from Columbia University.

PLATTSBURGH — There’s a group of students at Plattsburgh High School that enjoy giving back to the community.

The school’s Student Association and College for Every Student program recently created holiday-themed placemats to deliver to elderly members of the community and shut-ins as a community service project.

Sue LaPierre, faculty advisor for the school’s two organizations, said she was proud of the group of students, which included members of the school’s Key Club and National Honor Society.

“We went to a conference in Buffalo and learned about a student service project for kids there for the local Meals on Wheels,” explained LaPierre. “We thought this was a pretty easy event to organize that might brighten the day for lots of folks.”

Through two sessions, students met to create the placemats — just one of the latest projects the Student Association and College for Every Student program have done to give back to the community, said LaPierre.

“It seemed like a nice way to do things for the folks around us,” said LaPierre.

“Particularly, in these economic times, we have to help each other out. I really think, in order to build a sense of community, we have to teach kids to take care of each other and people around us.”

Senior Carissa Boire said she feels a sense of pride when performing community service projects. As vice president of the Student Association and active member of both Key Club and National Honor Society, Boire said it’s not difficult to take time to make a difference in the lives of others.

“It’s not very hard at all,” she said. “It definitely brightens someone’s day to

even get a placemat that someone else made for them. It’s just an easy way to help out the community.”

Most recently, the students hosted “Santa’s Workshop,” a night for parents to bring their children to the school to have them supervised while they went out for their holiday shopping.

Senior Tejinder Gill, president of the Student Association, said offering a night like that for parents was just another way students could help give back to the community.

“It’s fulfilling,” Gill said of giving back.

“Things like [Santa’s Workshop] are more fun than work anyway. It’s fun working with kids.”

“I love knowing that I’m helping someone else,” added Boire “It’s definitely important for us to help out and help others.

We’re an organization who has an ability to help other people out and we like doing that.”

Though the value of the donation was initially estimated by the school district’s board of education at $500, the actual cost to replace an instrument such as this would be roughly $2,000, said Verity.

“It’s a perfect condition instrument,” said Verity. “I’d have to say $500 is a steal. I’d buy 10 of them at $500. I bought one like this for my house back in the late ‘90s and I paid $1,600 for mine.”

“In difficult financial times, we really do appreciate this kind of outreach from the community,” continued Verity.

“This really allowed us to do something that was much needed in the classroom.

Susan’s gift is greatly appreciated.”

Williams said making the donation gave her “a wonderful feeling.”

“My mother would be really happy that I made this decision,” she said. “I wanted to be a music major in college but never got the chance. This is a way to give back to students in hopes they can go on and realize their dreams.”

The music department is now in the process of moving the acoustic piano to a different location in the school, with Verity’s classroom now using the digital piano as the primary instrument in the classroom.

PLATTSBURGH — The music continues at Plattsburgh High School.

Through the generosity of parent Susan Williams, the school’s music department has received a used — though likenew condition — digital piano.

Music teacher William Verity said the department came into possession of a 1998 Yamaha Clavinova before Thanksgiving recess, though the donation was officially approved by the school district board of education Dec. 9.

Williams had recently moved to the Plattsburgh area from Wyoming and was interested in donating the piano to the district in memory of her late mother, Lois Anne Williams. Principal Glenn Hurlock learned of Williams’ intent to donate the instrument and asked Verity if such a donation would be of interest to the department.

“I said, ‘Absolutely,’” recalled Verity.

The donation was serendipitous, said Verity, given he was already interested in approaching the board of education about purchasing a digital piano.

“It just so turns out that with the inclusion of Smartboards in our classrooms, one of the things we’re encountering is that when you have a piano in a music classroom in its normal spot in

the center of the room, students can’t see the Smartboard,” said Verity. “So, instead of having to push and pull the piano out of the way, I felt a digital piano would be the perfect solution, in that it sits a lot lower.”

Verity was planning to ask the board if a digital piano could be purchased somewhere in the future when he learned of Williams’ interest in simply donating one.

“With Susan’s help, [getting a piano] came to fruition a lot easier than we thought it would,” said Verity.

The digital piano has already seen much use in the first two weeks in its new home in Verity’s classroom, with Verity being the primary user so far, he said. Students are gradually being introduced to the instrument, giving them the understanding of how important the donation is and how it must remain well cared for, said Verity.

Given how students in chorus and Verity’s Music in Our Lives class are working on a piano unit, the timing of the donation was perfect, he said.

“Students are playing on our mini keyboards in our lab, but when they get something really done well and they want the rest of the class to hear it, I have them come up to the performance piano and they’re able to play,” said Verity. “Everybody can see them, and

Remove snow and ice without hurting the planet Municipalities, homeowners look at greener ways to get rid of the dreaded white stuff PLATTSBURGH — Snow and ice can be beautiful, but can also be treacherous and hazardous. That is why municipalities budget thousands of dollars every year for plowing and salting the roadways. Individual homeowners also maintain their properties through shoveling and salting — but at what cost to the environment?

It’s estimated more than 20 million tons of sodium chloride are dumped on roadways across the country every year in an attempt to keep roads safe. Drivers know what salt can do to the appearance and performance of their vehicles. As it turns out, snow-melting products can have environmental implications as well.

Concerns about salt and chemical snowmelting products involve runoff that can contaminate nearby water supplies.

“We really have spent an amount of time looking at the issue,” said Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett, “especially in our rural areas where a lot of people still have wells and obviously we’re plowing along the Saranac River.”

Bassett added the town highway department did look at a liquid mixture used in Vermont, but decided it wasn’t appropriate for the area.

Minnesota researchers discovered in early 2010 that, in the urban Twin Cities area, 70 percent of the salt applied to roads stayed within the region’s watershed. Sodium chloride alone can affect the pH of water, changing the environment in which marine life lives, potentially causing certain species to die off and creating dead zones. It can also affect the sodium content of well water, which can be dangerous to individuals on sodium-restrictive diets.

In terms of vegetation alongside roadways, splashing from salty puddles can cause plants and trees to wither and soil to erode. Plus, salt accumulation at the edge of roads can be entic-

ing to animals who will go there to feed. This can increase the risk of accidents with motorists.

However, Bassett said the amount of salt used is taken into consideration in the town.

“What we have done is we have our own pit where we do our own mixing of salt and sand and we’re very careful to make sure that the mixture is meeting the needs,” he said. “If you need to sand the road or if you need a salt mixture that’s also going to be doing some melting of ice.” “[The highway department is] sensitive to the percentage of mixture as well as the conditions of what’s needed,” he added. “We’re sensitive to the environmental issues and because of costs. Salt is expensive.”

At your own home, one of the greener methods of snow and ice removal is simply some elbow grease. Using a shovel or ice chipper reduces the need for salt application. If salt must be used, individuals should use it sparingly.

Other alternatives will not melt snow but can increase traction. Consider applying sand or birdseed to improve footing on icy surfaces.

Special boots with improved treads can also provide traction.

Homeowners who are considering replacing a driveway this season may want to spend a little more money on one with snow-melting capabilities. Electric wires beneath the concrete will heat the surface and radiate the warmth upward.

There’s no ideal way to protect the planet from snow-removal products, and the argument will remain about what is more important — public safety or environmental safety?

However, reducing reliance on salts and other chemical de-icers can do a part in protecting water supplies, animals and vegetation.

While many look for more environmentally-friendly ways to remove snow, perhaps no method is more eco-friendly than some good old fashioned shoveling.

Department of Labor mails 20,000 surveys about green jobs ALBANY — The state Department of Labor has launched a survey to estimate the number of green jobs across the state and to identify the skills people need to do these jobs. Green jobs are those that are involved in some aspect of renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean technology industries.

The agency is cooperating with many partner organizations on this much-anticipated survey.

Funded by a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the surveys go out to firms in six industry clusters this week.

The Department of Labor urges companies that receive a green survey to respond promptly. In many cases, responses are as simple as placing a check in the box. The Labor Department will pool each firm’s responses with data from other similar busi-

nesses. The final report will not contain any details from an individual firm, only group results. This is a key way for the employer community to help government assess the potential for green jobs and the training they require.

Green industries have a ripple effect on all aspects of the economy. They spur new business opportunities as industries integrate clean energy technologies, practices and services.

The survey targets these industry clusters: • Construction • Energy and environment-related manufacturing • Electric power generation, transmission and distribution • Professional services • Financial services and

PLATTSBURGH — Though GlutenFree Baking Week will be celebrated beginning this Sunday, for many, it’s a lifestyle that gets attention year-round.

Those living with celiac disease — an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine — experience serious immune system reactions to gluten, a type of protein that is found in many types of grains.

Carol McLean, owner of both Irises Café and Wine Bar and DeLish by Irises Cupcake Bakeshop and Gourmet Deli, said she’s noticed an increase in the number of people suffering from celiac disease for several years. McLean was approached by a representative from the celiac support group at CVPH Medical Center about providing a gluten-free menu seven years ago, and has seen a steady increase in the number of patrons ordering gluten-free selections.

“She approached us because we make our food fresh, from scratch, so she thought it was something we could easily adapt to,” said McLean. “We used to have a separate menu for gluten-free items and now we just incorporate them into our main menu because there are so many items we can do gluten-free with just slight substitutions.”

Adrienne Dionne, pastry chef for Delish and Irises, said she’s also notice an increase in demand for gluten-free items, leading the businesses to expand their offerings with items like glutenfree chocolate cupcakes and a brownie souffle.

“Essentially, what we do, instead of using wheat flour, is replace it with white rice flour or almond flour,” explained Dionne.

Unless using gluten-free baking mixes like Bob’s Red Mill products, said Dionne, it’s important to know how to properly substitute out regular flour.

“If you take out flour, it’s a binding agent, so you have to replace it with guar gum or corn starch or something else to keep that binding together,” she said.

“It is a different texture,” Dionne said of items that are made gluten-free.

Kimball finds it’s a ‘Dirty Life,’ but someone has to do it

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com ESSEX — When Kristin Kimball got her first taste of life on a small-town farm, she found it was very different from life in Manhattan — to say the least.

“It was a shock in many ways,” admitted Kimball. “I was a city person so, physical work was completely new to me.”

However, Kimball didn’t just go from being a writer in New York City to Mrs. Green Jeans over night.

“I got really interested in the small farming movement. So, I started interviewing young farmers in the Hudson Valley,” explained Kimball.

Eventually, she made her way to a “young, intelligent, tall, handsome farmer” in State College, Pa., and fell madly in love.

“First with farming and then with him,” she said, adding her soon-to-be husband, Mark, was “a close second.”

The two uprooted themselves and found a new home in Essex County, establishing Essex Farm, a 500-acre farm, in 2003.

Though her husband was an experienced farmer, Kimball — who grew up in the moderately-sized Central New York town of Rome — admits she was not.

“I felt stupid pretty much every day of that first year,” said Kimball. “It was incredibly humbling, incredibly satisfying work,

but darn hard.”

Converting from a hard-wired metropolitan to a hard-working farmer was something that Kimball found to be good fodder for a book. So, she wrote one — “The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love,” which documents Kimball’s transformative first year and the trials and tribulations of building a sustainable farm in the Adirondacks.

“It is the story of what it was like for me to leave my life in the city and go through the sort of satisfying but extremely difficult process of becoming a farmer,” she said.

“It’s about what it’s like to change your life radically and really commit to a person, a place and a way of life.”

One of the biggest changes, she said, was going from a woman who would stay out late to a mother of two that would be up with the dawn.

“I used to come home at 4 o’clock in the morning and now I get up at 4 o’clock in the morning,” she said, laughing. “So, I’ve become a morning person.”

Kimball’s new 273-page book — published by Scribner — also chronicles her learning how to milk cows, catch pigs, and live with a man who is “exasperating and incredibly intelligent, worthy and romantic.”

“A lot of the book is how both farming and marriage are long-term projects that require patience and hard work,” she said.

ing a farmer in this day and age, it’s the support of family, friends and neighbors that make farming worthwhile.

“Our community has been nothing but supportive of us and we’ve been able to farm exactly the way that we want to farm,”

she said. “It’s a tough way to make a living, but it’s a great way to live.”

The Vermont-based band will be releasing its new CD, “The Tree of Us,” this Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Monopole. It’s a project that’s been a long-time coming, said band member Pieter Van Leeuwen.

“Our debut CD has been so much work and has really consumed us, especially over the last month,” said Van Leeuwen.

The band — which consists of Mike Friest on bass and vocals, Matt Donohue on drums, and Van Leeuwen on keyboards and vocals —recorded the CD on their own to save on expenses, said Van Leeuwen.

“So, the trade off is that you’ve got to put that much more work into it,” said Van Leeuwen.

The 12-song CD clocks in at just more than 71 minutes in length and features their hit “Belong,” which itself is almost 14 minutes long.

“We wanted to get a decent amount of songs on the CD, but we also made sure we’d get one that shows our love for improvisation,” said Van Leeuwen. “We have grown as a band and learned much through this experience. Now we get to celebrate all of the hard work.” iS formed over the course of a couple of

years between 2003 and 2004, born from a previous band that had moved out to Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1999. The band dissolved soon after the move, but Friest, and Van Leeuwen continued to work on songs together.

“We played with a bunch of musicians out there and eventually started doing some shows, abbreviating our old name — Indian Summer,” said Van Leeuwen. “We believe the word personifies our live show and our love for adventurous improvisation, because iS is now, the present tense. No show is ever the same and if you love live music and appreciate good musicianship, you’ll never be bored.”

The band’s sound is “thick and dynamic,” with influences like Phish, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Bruce Hornsby, Rush, and a list that could “go on and on,” said Van Leeuwen. The overall sound of iS is made up from styles like groove rock, progressive, funk, bluegrass, jazz, ragtime, and more.

“Seeing a complete show of ours is like going for a ride with lots of diverse scenery,” said Van Leeuwen. “We also care very much about the songs we write. The lyrics are relevant and relatable, and the vocals are full of soul. We love the jams, but they wouldn’t exist without the songs.”

Having the band’s CD release party this Saturday is special to iS, said Van Leeuwen, since it was the first venue they played in
