Michele’s Fine Dining going pink Dinner to benefit Guardians of the Ribbon next Saturday

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — An evening of food and entertainment will help raise money for a pink fire truck.

The Guardians of the Ribbon, a nonprofit organization made up of firefighters and police officers, work to raise money and awareness for nonprofit entities that help women and children faced with cancer.

The local chapter, also the first in the state, is known as the Northern New York Chapter of the Guardians of the Ribbon, and was begun by West Chazy Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Jim Garrant.

The organization began in July and immediately got to work raising money for their pink fire truck — one of the organizations main goals. “[The truck] is going to be used to bring awareness of cancer in women and children and hopefully we can raise more funds,” Garrant explained.

“Other groups that I’ve talked to said that is their biggest thing to do,” he added. “It’s the centerpiece of each chapter. If we go to

an event, it helps to draw people in. We’ve got our eye on three trucks right now.”

Howard Fleisher, a firefighter with the South Plattsburgh Fire Department and owner of Michele’s Fine Dining, heard about the Guardians and their plans to purchase a truck and knew he wanted to help.

“Having a business in the community, you have to give back to the community,” he explained.

Fleisher will offer a buffet dinner Saturday, Dec. 4, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the restaurant for a $10 donation, with all proceeds going directly towards the truck purchase.

“It’s just amazing because he’s putting on the whole meal for us, no charge,” said Garrant. “He’s gone out and got prizes to raffle off for us.”

The prizes, some of which include two day passes to Titus Mountain in Malone, and restaurant gift certificates, will be raffled off in a Chinese auction and door prizes.

“We’ve been going around to businesses and they’ve been great helping us out with stuff,” explained Garrant.

“He knows we’re looking to get a fire truck and we’re going to paint it pink. This wine is called Pink Truck wine out in California,” Garrant said, adding Fleisher also ordered a wine called Fire Truck.

Fleisher also told Garrant his plan is to have the Guardians leave the restaurant with the full amount of money needed for the truck.

If they succeed, the organization can then look towards their next goal of working with CVPH Medical Center ’s cancer center.

“Our goal down the road is to start a fund at the Fitzpatrick Cancer [Center] for people without insurance,” said Garrant, adding it may also be used to pay for copays.

The evening of entertainment at Michele’s Fine Dining, 5131 U.S. Ave., will also feature a deejay and live entertainment from a local band.

‘Snowball’ tournament Dec. 4-5 will help raise autism awareness WEST PLATTSBURGH — The first annual Autism Awareness Snowball Tournament will be held at American Legion Post 1619, 219 Rand Hill Road, Saturday, Dec. 4, and Sunday, Dec. 5.

The co-ed tournament will follow regular softball rules, with five men and five women on the field at all times. The cost to enter is a $125 sponsor fee with a deposit of $50 to hold a spot.

The tournament will be played in snow or not beginning at 7:30 a.m. that Saturday, with participants asked to bring a toy for an underprivileged boy or girl.

The event will also include arts and crafts for children inside the post both days as well as sleigh rides, puppet shows and an appearance by Santa Claus. A Christmas tree lighting will be held that Saturday between 4 and 5 p.m.

JCEO looking for votes in Pepsi Refresh Project Also in the running...

PLATTSBURGH — There’s only a matter of days left until the end of the month, and Bruce Garcia is hoping the community will help make every one of those days count.

The Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties Inc., the nonprofit organization which assists underprivileged families in the two-county region, is in its second running for one of 10 $25,000 grants from the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. Garcia, who serves as executive director for the JCEO, said he’s hoping the second time will be the charm.

“We were in the running last month,” said Garcia, “and we ended up at 87th. What happens is if you make the top 100, they automatically qualify you for another month’s worth

of voting.”

The Refresh Everything Project opens submitted causes up to the public to vote on which projects they’d like to see funded most.

The proposed project to fund for JCEO, said Garcia, is to make improvements to its food pantry, including purchasing new freezers, refrigerators, and shelving.

However, the improvements aren’t just because JCEO wants to make an upgrade — it’s because one is needed, said Garcia. In the last year and a half, JCEO has arranged cooperative agreements with Wal-Mart, Target, Sam’s Club, and Yando’s that give JCEO donations of “an extraordinary amount of food.”

“We’ve gotten over 120,000 pounds of food from those entities,” he said. “The problem is, it’s really stretched our resources. Some of our coolers are older and now they’re full all the time and really working hard. It’s been

great from the standpoint that we’ve been able to give low-income families really balanced nutrition, more than we’ve even been able to do before, but we need better equipment to store the food properly.”

And, though JCEO is competing against 247 other entries in their category, Garcia said he feels the people of the North Country will step up to support JCEO in its endeavor.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in the course of a month,” said Garcia. “If we can keep the momentum up, maybe we can get into the top 10.”

TAC and ‘Power of SUNY’ go hand in hand

“If you look closely, they read ‘To Learn.

To Search. To Serve,’” said TAC executive director Howard Lowe. “That ties in directly with what we do. We do a lot of research and search for information that we make available to improve the community.”

According to TAC’s mission statement, the center is the economic development outreach arm of SUNY Plattsburgh which provides technical assistance to public and private sector organizations with the goal of enhancing economic development across Northern New York. Lowe prides the center not only on its day-to-day efforts to improve the community through its efforts, but in also aligning itself with SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher ’s “Power of SUNY” philosophy. Power of SUNY is the belief SUNY schools can serve as “the driving force behind New York State’s economic revitalization and a better future for its citizens.”

ciples: SUNY and the Entrepreneurial Century, SUNY and the Seamless Education Pipeline, SUNY and a Healthier New York, SUNY and an Energy Smart New York, SUNY and the Vibrant Community, and SUNY and the World.

Though TAC’s strategic initiatives have already embodied the spirit of the Power of SUNY, there are key areas which stand out for the center, said assistant director Victoria Zinser Duley. One of which is creating healthier communities.

The center has worked with the Clinton, Essex and Franklin county health departments in varying capacities over the years, Duley explained, helping the departments establish healthy community initiatives.

“The projects we’ve undertaken with the Clinton County Health Department have been really exciting, ranging from research and data analysis for public health planning documents to assisting with long-term planning to create healthier communities through policy change,” she said.

TAC continues to work with the Health Department to promote activities and projects hosted by the department on a regular basis.

“We will be working with the department on their “Healthy Schools New York” project, which is working to change school policies to promote healthier lifestyles for the kids,” said Duley, adding that the center has been honored to work with the CCHD. “They’re real leaders in the Northeast as far as planning long-term for a more physically-active community, with improved nutrition, and access to preventive primary health care.”

Developing partnerships between the public and private sector to move the region forward has always been a goal of TAC, said Lowe, which demonstrates another way the center aligns with the Power of SUNY. Proof of that is in the grant that TAC is implementing to help improve wireless broadband network access throughout the region, particularly the Adirondack Park.

“We all want our computers in our pockets, and to be always connected, wherever we are, whenever we want,” said Lowe.

“And, yet, in the Adirondack region, that’s very difficult.”

Though restrictions are put in place to protect the natural beauty of the Adirondack Park, the restrictions also hinder technology becoming amply available in places like the High Peaks region.

The center, through the Research Foundation of SUNY, applied for and recently received a DEC Smart Growth grant to fund research to locate existing structures within the Adirondack Park that could be used to mount wireless antennas.

“The whole idea is that if we can create a database for the private companies to use, it will save them a lot of money and it will encourage them to expand their wireless service areas,” said Lowe. “Over next six months, we’re going to be identifying com-

Twenty dancers performed a flash mob at Champlain Centre Mall Nov. 18, in an effort to make the general public aware of the negative effects of tobacco use.

‘Smokeout’ event dances on issue of tobacco use

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Thirty-five years have passed since the original Great American Smokeout was created by the American Cancer Society, yet kids and teenagers are still bombarded with marketing of tobacco products.

According to New York’s Tobacco Use Prevention and Control, tobacco companies spent $12.5 billion on advertising in 2006 alone. That’s $8 billion more than junk food and soda companies, and more than $9 billion from alcohol companies.

“Our young people are seeing too much tobacco advertising, particularly in stores ... and that does affect them and it does cause them to start smoking,” explained Karen Derusha of the Adirondack Tobacco Free Network.

To get the general public aware of this issue, Derusha worked with the American Cancer Society, Colleges 4 Change, and Colleges Against Cancer to host a flash mob at Champlain Centre Mall, called Stepping out Against Tobacco.

The flash mob — which is a spontaneous gathering of people who perform an action and then disperse — was held Nov. 18 and began with dancer Nathaniel Marshall dancing his way across the floor in front of

Eventually more dancers came on the scene, with the end result showcasing 20 dancers. To bring attention to the effects of smoking, the dancers ended the two-minute show with Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” began coughing and eventually fell to the ground.

Afterwards some of the dancers stood up and warned the public of the hazards of tobacco use.

“We had just seen another group that had done [a flash mob] and we thought it would be a cool idea and a great way to promote this particular topic,” Derusha said.

Although she was skeptical of how big the crowd of spectators would be during an afternoon in the middle of the week, Derusha said the crowd was “pretty good.”

“I think we got the effect we were looking for,” she said. “I think people were a little surprised and we caught their attention.”

The act was videotaped by Media Central and will be shown at future events, including Plattsburgh’s annual Relay for Life.

The dancers also performed the flash mob earlier that day at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh for the college students, with positive results.

“I think we’ll definitely be replicating this a few more times,” said Derusha.

Teams Gearing up for Winter Seasons T

he winters sports season is almost here, with varsity-level teams getting excited about upcoming games, meets and matches.

In the Plattsburgh City School District the varsity boys basketball, girls basketball, bowling, hockey, swimming and indoor track teams have already begun practice.

Seton Catholic Central’s varsity boys basketball, girls basketball, and indoor track teams are also preparing as well as students on the Beekmantown Central School District’s varsity boys basketball, girls basketball, hockey and wrestling teams.

PHS Varsity Boys Basketball The varsity boys basketball team will be coached by Chris Hartmann. The team’s overall record was 18-5 last year with a 11-3 conference record.

This year ’s team will consist of forwards Justin Curtis, Andrew Favro, James Stiger, Anthony Porcelli, and Akawish Tarar; guards Tre Bucci, Tevin Conners, Jordan Knight, Kyle LaPoint, Ab MaKnani, Ethan Votraw; and centers Rob Fout and Kevin Stallsmith.

“We expect to be very competitive in league play,” said Hartmann. “We return four out of five starters and have a very deep bench. The key to our success will be the team playing together and believing in each other.”

“With almost all of our starters returning from last year, we will look to improve this season,” said Wilson.

“We are hoping to take advantage of our speed and the leadership provided by our returning players. Our new players bring enthusiasm and a strong work ethic and will contribute to our overall success.”

The varsity hockey team will be coached by Scott Keeney. The team’s overall record was 6-0 last year with a 6-0 conference record.

“At this time, the Hornets have 37 swimmers. This number is up from 28 last year,” said Keeney. “The biggest problem will be trying to get every swimmer involved in every meet. The team lost three seniors and a few swimmers did not return this season ... I will be rotating positions every meet so it’s difficult to say which events will be the strongest, but I believe we can be competitive in every one.”

Seton Varsity Girls Basketball

The varsity bowling team will be coached by Vickie Millan.

The boys team will consist of Corey Eagle, Andrew Harris, Matt Harris, Jonathan Kipp, Harley LaDuke, Jonas Miller, Dustin Mousseau, Joshua Shaffer, Matt Stevens, Jeffery Stiffler, Dale St. Germaine, Dustin Stowe and Kyle Trout. The girls team will consist of Allison Beebie, Maggee Gates, Samantha Malcolm, Brooke Marbut, Holley Peterson, Emily Rohrig, Kamie St. Germaine, and Cathrine Sharp.

“The PHS men’s team lost two starters to graduation as well as top bowler Rob Knowles to hockey ... Practice and commitment will drive the remaining bowlers looking to secure a starting spot on the squad,” said McMillan. “The Lady Hornets have no seniors but the entire team is back ... the future looks bright for the next

“This year ’s seniors need to lead and step up this year,” said Walentuk. “They are experienced but need to increase their scoring. It will be interesting to see who emerges as a scorer or will they all be comfortable taking 5-10 shots a game. Solid defense will be key to staying in games with our CVAC opponents.”

Seton Varsity Indoor Track The varsity indoor track team will be coached by

This year ’s boys team will consist of sprints Brian Murray and Michael Doorey; and middle distance/distance Barrett Waling, Zachary Ziemer, Mitchell Ryan, Justin Bresette, Tyler Grant, James Downs, Eddie LaRow, Erik Ziemer; and newcomer Evan Page.

This year ’s girls team will consist of sprints Rhea Breyette and Jamyla Willette; and middle distance/distance Dana Chapman, Mary Glynn, Margaret Champagne, Anna Rabideau, and Melissa Wyman.

“My expectations are for all my athletes to achieve personal records from their previous seasons,” said Champagne. “I would like to have as many athletes as possible qualify and run well at the state meet.”

Beekmantown Varsity Boys Basketball The varsity boys basketball team, coached by Ryan Converse, and assisted by Peter Bursik, Ryan Loucy, and Dave Manney, is coming back from a 7-7 conference record in the 2009-2010 season, with a 9-10 overall.

The team is made up of forwards Devon Anderson, Keegan Ryan, Jordan Stewart and Zach Towle; center Thomas Ryan; and guards Mitchell Danussi, Foster Ebersole, Tyler Frennier, Chris McIlroy, Seth Pelkey, Dylan Riley and Ben Smith, with only five of them being returning players.

“We have a solid core of returning players with significant varsity experience,” Converse said. “As well as some exciting newcomers who should have immediate impact.”

In terms of the upcoming season, Converse hopes the seniors will get the chance at the Section 7 championships.

“Some of them have been on varsity for three or four years,” he said. “It would be a really nice way for them to end their high school career.”

Beekmantown Varsity Girls Basketball The varsity girls basketball team, coached by Greg Waters, and assisted by Steve LePage, is returning from a 5-10 conference record for the 2009-2010 season, with a 7-12 overall stat.

The team is made up of forwards Shannon Ryan, Nicole Shepler, Emily Anderson, and Caila LaFountain, and guards Alissa Momot, Rylei Porter, Grace Kelly, Michelle Cressey, Emily Beatty, and Melissa OffmanRodriguez.

Waters noted this year ’s team is a young one, with four seniors, three juniors, one freshman, and two eighth graders, although they are a team of “decent speed and height.”

For this year he has already seen they are a “hardworking, hustling team,” with “strong team chemistry” and the “potential for improvement throughout the season.”

Beekmantown Varsity Hockey The varsity hockey team, coached by Justin Frechette, and assisted by Blake Frechette, is coming back from a 2009-2010 season of 16-5-1, and a confer-

ence record of 8-2. They are also ranked seventh in the state.

The team is made up of seniors Frank Buksa, Brett Carnwright, and Allan Bray. Juniors Hunter Dominy, Jordan Barriere, Carter Frechette, Tavon Ford-Relation, Kody Rascoe, Corey Gonyea, and Dereck Fleming.

Sophomores Cole Carter, Brett Giroux, Kyle Bisonette, Tanner Roser, Austin Bradish, Brenden Carnright, and Kyle McCarthy. Freshman Brandon Buksa, Matt LaClair, Ryan Waterbury, Devin Fessette, and Nathan Foster, and eighth grader Josh Barriere.

“Graduating eight seniors from last years team, we will need our younger players to step up and fill the leadership voids left by our graduating seniors,” said Justin Frechette. “With a team this young, the challenge will be playing with consistency night in and night out throughout the entire season.”

Beekmantown Varsity Indoor Track Coming into her first season of coaching indoor track at Beekmantown, coach Barbara Drake said she has her work cut out for her.

“Coaching a team that in past years, has had quite successful season, I have my work cut out,” she said.

“The success of the athletes is something that reflects on me whether negative or positive.”

“My expectations for the season is to get the athletes conditioned and to compete at their highest potential,” Drake added. “Someone with track and field experience, hopefully, will help boost confidence for the athletes and myself.”

Beekmantown Varsity Wrestling The varsity wrestling team, coached by Len Gadway, and assisted by Dennis Renadette, Alan Nephew, Josh Howard, and Kevin Gregory, is returning with a combined dual meets with 142 wins and 20 losses during the last seven years.

This year ’s team consists of seniors Brandon Abrahamson, Nick Bushey, Jesse Daniels, Timothy Hoffman, Brandon Jabaut, Ethan Kerr, and Kyle LaPorte. Juniors Austin Desreuisseau, Hayden Head, and Jesse Hoffman. Sophomores Gage Bourdeau and Zachary Myers.

Frank Buksa signs with University at Albany Frank A., said of the college. “And, with being a SUNY school with athletic scholarship money makes it financially a very good move also.”

Buksa’s mother, Brenda, agreed, adding she was happy the school was only about three hours away.

“My dad just loves it, too,” she said. “He can’t wait to got watch him play. We all can’t wait to go watch him play. It’s going to be great.”

James Knight Jr., who had coached Buksa for the last three years, said he was proud of him for the hard work he has put into being a standout student athlete.

“It’s been phenomenal working with the family, watching him progress as a ballplayer and as a person,” said Knight. “It’s amazing and a reward that he deserves.”

“Who knows what the next level will be,” Knight added.

As far as Buksa is concerned, he’s not too worried, so long as he’s playing the game he loves.

“Whether that be single A, double A or [Major League Baseball], I want to play. I just love it,” he said.

For now, Buksa said he’s looking forward to his final season as a Beekmantown Eagle.

“Hopefully we get back to the state tournament like we have been the last two years.

A threepeat wouldn’t be too bad for a senior year,” said Buksa, smiling.

The Beekmantown Central High School senior signed his official letter of intent Nov. 18 to matriculate to the Division I school next fall. Surrounded by family and school staff, Buksa said he was excited to be attending the State University of New York school to play college-level baseball.

Buksa was first drawn to the school when he practiced for the Empire State Games last summer.

“I was like, ‘Wow, I should come and play baseball here. I can already hit home runs out of here,’” said Buksa.

It wasn’t long after University at Albany coaches saw him practice that he was contacted about his interest in attending the fouryear school, said Buksa. However, Buksa and his family did their homework before committing to the school, traveling as far as California to check out other schools that would offer a quality education and a chance for the star catcher to see some playing time. In the end, Albany offered what Buksa wanted.

“I loved it,” Buksa said of touring the campus. “I felt really comfortable with the coaches. They seem like old friends. I like them. I had a good vibe with them.”

Smoked Pepper owner expands his focus to the Northern Tier

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — Many people are familiar with the well-established Mexican restaurant The Smoked Pepper, located in Plattsburgh. Now, the restaurant’s owner and head chef, Mark Castro, is adding another restaurant to his menu.

In the former Ole Tymes Cafe location, Castro will open the Lake Street Cafe and Grill as well as the Lake Street Bakery, at 90-92 Lake St. “Two separate entities with both working together,” Castro explained of the businesses. “The bakery will supply products for that restaurant and also desserts for The Smoked Pepper.”

The bakery will also feature artisan breads utilizing natural products from local mills.

As for the restaurant, the best way Castro could describe the food was “comfort food with a twist.”

“It won’t be abnormal when lobsters are in season to walk in and see lobster macaroni and cheese on the menu,” he explained.

Castro said the restaurant will also have family-style dinners on Sundays.

“After church or after sports events with the kids, you can come in, sit down ... and we’ll serve you dinner on platters just like you were at home,” he said.

“It opens up another creative venue for us,” Castro added. “And don’t be surprised if you see us sneak a couple of Smoked Pepper items on the menu.”

Castro said he will also offer take out and delivery, including “home meal replacement.”

“Our idea is to be able to offer a dinner for four, take out,” he said. “Soup or salad, entree, vegetable, starch for four people, for $25.”

The idea of having a comfort food restaurant in Rouses Point was something Castro felt there was a demand for.

“We want to give something back to Rouses Point that was there before in Ole Tymes,” he said. “They’ve always served comfort food there. The old railroaders used to eat their breakfast in there every morning. We don’t want to change that.”

“We want to take that, we want to add to it and put our spin on it while also keep-

ing our feet firmly in tradition,” added Castro.

Tradition will also be seen in the restaurant as Castro plans to utilize the old soda fountain, still fully-functional, for malts, floats and milkshakes.

Castro said he also has been a collector of Adirondack Life since its inception and plans to utilize articles and photos from them to decoupage the breakfast bar.

“You’ve got a hundred years of history right in front of you,” he explained. “It should be really nice.”

Castro plans to open the bakery Wednesday, Dec. 1, with the opening for the restaurant to follow sometime in the beginning of January, with both being open seven days a week.

Castro said the support from the village has also helped to get the businesses up and running.

“The village, they’re behind us 150 percent. They’ve been incredibly supportive,” he said. “They want to see every business that comes into Rouses Point expand and grow and they’re willing to do whatever they have to to support that. From the mayor, right on down.”

Musician Gary Henry just enjoying what he loves

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Gary Henry has been playing guitar and singing for some time now.

“I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t obsessed with some type of music,” said Henry.

As a child, Henry performed as a vocalist in plays and operas in Ohio and Pennsylvania. During his high school years, he moved away from musicals and started trying to play the music he was listening to on the radio.

Nirvana’s album “Nevermind,” which was released when he was a freshman in high school, was “a big influence” on him, said Henry, with groups like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who, and Led Zeppelin being among others.

Henry began performing in coffee shops and bars as a soloist during his undergraduate years at Kent State University and, since that time, he’s continued to play solo, as well as in duos, trios, and quartets at festivals, clubs and private parties. Henry originally began playing rock and folk music from the 1960s through the 1990s. It was about six years ago when, after moving to Dallas, Tx., Henry shifted his focus to playing rockabilly, honky tonk, and traditional country music from the 1940s through 1960s.

“The music of The Beatles is still a large part of my solo shows,” said Henry. “ Today,

my solo shows in Plattsburgh are mostly rock and folk, but I’d like to get back into roots music again.”

Last spring, Henry started playing the Plattsburgh music scene after being in the North Country less than a year. He began being booked at the Naked Turtle, Dana’s Rusty Anchor, and Irises Café and Wine Bar in Plattsburgh and at Cricket’s Restaurant in Peru. Wherever he goes, Henry said people have been receptive to his shows.

“I’ve enjoyed meeting new folks every time I play out,” said Henry. “The crowds up here know and appreciate good rock music, so I’ve enjoyed interacting with crowds and finding out what they’re into.”

Performing primarily cover music, Henry said he puts a great deal of effort into interpreting songs consistent with the original recordings of other artists.

“It is an approach that has served me well over the years, as my vocal range is fairly wide and malleable,” he said.

Though Henry’s focus is on cover music, he has been writing his own music for as long as he’s been playing, with the idea of recording his own album sometime in the near future.

“Right now, I’m focused on raising my musical profile locally, and the crowd at Irises is a great place to start,” said Henry.
