Mall’s Night of Giving returns for fifth year PLATTSBURGH — The festive season has already begun at Champlain Centre. And, this weekend the mall will truly celebrate the giving spirit of the holidays.

The mall will take part in the fifth annual “Night of Giving,” this Sunday, Nov. 21, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Customers who visit the mall with a special Night of Giving ticket will be entitled to exclusive instore promotions by participating merchants. The tickets are purchased from one of the nearly 20 participating nonprofit organizations who receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the tickets they sell.

“I think more than ever this year we’re going to have more nonprofits,” said the mall’s marketing director Joan LaPier. “We’re excited about that. I think they see it as a good deal.”

Cultural diversity biggest SUNY Plattsburgh has ever seen ana@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — In a place where cultural diversity often lacks, the State University of New York at Plattsburgh is working to become as widely diverse as possible.

SUNY Plattsburgh will be hosting Night of Nations Saturday, Nov. 20, at E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium in Hawkins Hall. Night of Nations, explained graduate assistant for International Student Services Kate Friedrich, is “a unique event at SUNY Plattsburgh in that it really celebrates international and domestic students.

“It’s really the only event that solely has given special attention to international students,” said Friedrich, “nd it’s an opportunity for international and domestic students to showcase talents from different cultures, some traditional and some contemporary.”

Night of Nations is an event that has been going on for several years and is widely regarded and looked forward to at the college campus. The event is said to have been formed organically by students — both international and domestic — who wanted a place to educate others about their culture and traditions in a fun and educational way explained Friedrich.

“There will be dancing, singing, musical instrument performances and there will even be a skit that is a kind of a parody on Bollywood movies, so there will be a lot of variety,” said

Several clubs will be performing including the Korean Association, African Unity, Club Caribbean, and Afro/Brazilian Capoeira Club.

“It’s a great way to celebrate other cultures, but it’s really a great opportunity for Americans to be involved,” added Friedrich.

Night of Nations has been growing in attendance over the last couple of years. The event started with 200-300 guests but last year ’s attendance was more than 800. This year ’s turnout is anticipated to be the same. “[Attendees] will be blown away by the professionalism in which the event will be produced and also by many of the staging aspects of the show like lighting and stage managing,” said production manager Rory Wallace.

“We’re near the border but we don’t even have to cross the border to go see something different, you can come to the Plattsburgh campus and see a lot of different things here,” added ISS assistant director for International Admissions Cat Young.

Night of Nations will start at 6:30 p.m. and is aimed to be two hours long. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by ISS and Club International, but also received funding from College Auxiliary Services and the Student Association.

Polar plunge gets people Freezin’ for a Reason

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It was a nice day for a swim — except for the fact the water temperature was in the 40s.

Despite the near freezing conditions of Lake Champlain, hundreds gathered at Plattsburgh City Beach for the first annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge Nov. 13. The reason? Supporting Special Olympics New York, an organization that hosts an annual state competition for those with intellectual disabilities.

Michelle Menard, one of the organizers for the event, couldn’t believe the turnout for both the plunge and the preview party and silent auction hosted the night before. Combined, the two events raised more than $22,000.

“I was shocked, totally shocked,” said Menard. “The first couple weeks, there was only about $1,000 posted on-line, and then, in the past couple days, it just exploded. It’s been so great for the community and everybody that helped out. Everybody’s been talking about it.”

“We had heard about it and thought it was a great cause,” said Megan Gruschow, a student at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh who participated with the Student Nursing Association team. “I’m going to school for special education, so it was a great opportunity to be a part of this.”

stepped foot in the water? Not at all. But, just what was running through her mind when her toes touched the lake for the first time that day?

“That I was insane,” she said, laughing.

“But, it’s an experience I will never forget. I was freezing, but it was awesome.”

“I don’t think I was thinking anything, to be honest. I just went in,” said Gruschow’s friend and teammate, Emily Vallone. “We actually went back in three times. This is our last year at Plattsburgh State, so we want to experience as much as we can and this is a great cause. We figured, why not?

The enthusiasm of participants like Gruschow and Vallone impressed Kaila Horton, associate director of development for Special Olympics of New York. And, the fact the event raised more than $20,000 in its first year was even more amazing, she said.

“We were expecting 150, maybe 200 people.

I know that we definitely had 200 people that participated today, not even counting the spectators,” said Horton. “There are probably 300 to 400 people here.”

“This event just blew away my expectations,” she added.

The event even drew local dignitaries like Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak, Clinton County Sheriff David N. Favro, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew J. Wylie and Essex County Kristy Sprague, among others.

New book shows Clinton County history through photographs

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The history of Clinton County can now be seen in 183 photographs.

Clinton County historian Anastasia Pratt spent seven months working with Arcadia Publishing on her first book, “Clinton County (Images of America).”The book joins hundreds of others in the Images of America series which as been produced by Arcadia Publishing since 1993.

“It’s photos from all over the county put into eight different categories to show life during the earliest times to the present,” Pratt explained of the book.

“As a historian, I have access to all these wonderful photos and I’d like more people to be aware of them,” she added.

Pratt said Arcadia Publishing was interested in doing something on the whole county, with specific books about Champlain and Chazy already having been published.

According to Pratt, the book features photos ranging from farms in

“Every photo has a caption and the captions had some research explaining the history in each photo,” she said, adding most of the photos speak for themselves.

“There should be at least one image in every [town],” Pratt added. “I tried very hard to make sure there were.”

However, with the quick turnaround time of the book, Pratt admits she’s already found some mistakes, which will be fixed in future editions.

“We had two photos in particular that were in the collection and labeled incorrectly and so people have been kind enough to tell me that and tell me stories to go along with the photos,” she explained.

Pratt said she also hopes to hear some more stories at her upcoming book signing to take place at Corner-Stone Bookstore on Margaret Street Saturday, Nov. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.

“I do hope that people will come and look at some pictures and tell me some of the fun stories,” she said. “Or things that they remember about particular places. I think that’s what I hope more than anything.

It’ll be a time to share some stories of the past.”

Although she doesn’t know if she’ll be the author, Pratt said she hopes more books will be published in the Images of America series focusing on Plattsburgh and some of the surrounding towns.

“This was a great example of the community coming together,” said Make-A-Wish field office coordinator Patricia Reyell-MacMannis.

“Everything truly made him feel like a VIP.” “They were absolutely thrilled,” Champlain Centre marketing director Joan LaPier said of the mall’s employees. “I went around to the stores with information concerning Devin and they were all so excited.”

Devin came home from his four-hour shopping spree with an Xbox 360, mini laptop, and flat screen television. He also bought an iPod Touch for his sister, Shawntel Brown.

Although Susan admits Devin was slightly overwhelmed by the whole experience, he was also ecstatic.

“He loves everything he got and everything everybody did for him,” she said. “It was such a nice thing.”

“They’re great,” Susan added of the MakeA-Wish Foundation. “If anybody needs a wish, I would say, call Make-A-Wish.”

Conference stresses relationship abuse isn’t just an urban problem

By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Paul Henry Danylewich’s motivation as a public speaker is simple: to make young women aware abusive relationships are possible and they don’t have to live with them.

Danylewich’s message was heard by approximately 200 area high school girls at the first annual Plattsburgh Girl Conference Nov. 3, held at the Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County Senior Center. Students from Beekmantown, Chateaugay, Crown Point, Lake Placid, North Wood, Keene Valley and Willsboro high schools were bussed in for the day-long event brought to Plattsburgh by the Montreal speaker.

“We wanted to make young women aware of the fact these things are happening,” said Danylewich, who serves as director of White Tiger, a professional security consulting group that specializes in personal safety. “We wanted to debunk the myth some people have that this happens only in bigger cities. It can happen anywhere.”

Danylewich said he was inspired to start the Girl Conference Series as a way to commemorate the lives of 14 young women shot Dec. 6, 1989, in Montreal’s École Polytechnique Massacre. The women were murdered by Marc Lépine, who blamed women for him not being accepted into the engineering school. Lépine went into a school and separated the women and the men in the classroom and executed the young women be-

fore committing suicide.

After the shootings, Canada recognized the day to remember the victims but Danylewich said just having a day to remember the loss of the female students wasn’t enough, he wanted to work on preventative training for young women.

“It’s important to commemorate them, but also to use their story to proactively educate others,” said Danylewich. “We wanted to turn that terrible day into something good.”

Shahara said one of the reasons she wanted to participate in the Girl Conference Series was because when she was 17, she was in an verbally, mentally and financially abusive relationship.

“When I was their age I didn’t know about all the types of abuse.

For me abuse just meant physical so I thought to myself as long as someone wasn’t hitting me that I was being respected and was being loved in the proper way,” Shaharah said. “I think its great to be involved in teaching these girls about all the different types of abuse and what their local resources are so that when they do recognize that they are in abusive

relationship they know what to do and where to go.”

Beekmantown school counselor Jennifer Duffy said she and other staff members thought the conference would be beneficial to young girls as they prepare to leave their parents’ homes for college, giving them knowledge of what to do in an emergency.

“We wanted them to learn some safety tips that they should be made aware of in certain situations,” said Duffy.

“If even one girl from the conference learned something that will get them out of a bad relationship or prevents them from being beaten, it was worth it,” said Danylewich.

Remembering the veterans Ceremonies were held throughout the nation last Thursday, honoring the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Veterans Day, initially known as Armistice Day, recognizes the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I, and is celebrated on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Among the ceremonies held locally was one hosted by American Legion Post 20 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125 at the Legion post on Quarry Road in Plattsburgh. There, Commodore Thomas Vanezio of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary was the featured speaker and ceremonial wreaths were laid honoring branches of the U.S. military (seen at left). ‘Dine Out for United Way’ planning now under way Restaurants being sought to participate in Jan. 13 event

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region is reaching out to the restaurant community, and they’re hoping they’ll step up to the plate.

The nonprofit organization is in the process of planning “Dine Out for United Way,” a first-time event to benefit the more than 35 organizations United Way provides funding for in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.

Kirk A. Stallsmith, chairman of the local United Way’s 2010-11 fundraising campaign, is co-chairing the event with Ground Round manager Bob Kidwell, also a member of the fundraising campaign team. The

idea behind the event was to broaden the participation in giving to the United Way and increasing community involvement.

“The thought was to develop an event that can reach across all three counties and involve a segment of the market that could get excited about participating in the annual United Way campaign efforts,” said Stallsmith.

Dine Out for United Way — which will be held across the tri-county region Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 — encourages people to go out to eat at participating businesses during designated times that day, with as much as 10 percent of the total gross sales at each restaurant to go to the United Way. “Participating restaurants will sign up to donate a percentage of their proceeds from the evening and where it is possible we would like to offer an opportunity for wait-

staff to do likewise,” explained Stallsmith.

“It is a time of year after Christmas and New Year ’s where business may be a bit slower.

We hope the restaurant community gets excited about the event.”

Kidwell said he has a good feeling many others will as well.

“Working in the restaurant business is a busy job and it’s always a struggle to run the business and find time to give back to the community,” he said. “This is a perfect way to do that.”

The day of Dine Out for United Way will also be a chance for restaurant patrons to benefit themselves. Those who dine at participating restaurants and say they are “Dining Out for United Way” can enter into a drawing for raffle prizes donated to the United Way, including signed Buffalo Bills and New York Jets jerseys, gift certificates,

and gift baskets from Adirondack Specialty Food. After the event, tickets will be collected from the participating restaurants and winners will be drawn.

John C. Bernardi, executive director of the United Way of the Adirondack Region, said he looks forward to the event and hopes restaurants and their patrons alike will respond like he believes they will.

“This is a great opportunity to engage our friends and neighbors across the region to support our very important mission,” he said, Dine Out for United Way is currently in the planning stages, with letters seeking interest from hundreds of businesses across the region being mailed out the beginning of next week.

Free Thanksgiving meal returns for less fortunate

Check. Cranberry sauce? Check. Enough food for more than 300 people? You’d better believe it.

Though Thanksgiving is the time of year many are preparing for small family gatherings around the dinner table, it’s also the time of year the Plattsburgh chapter of The Salvation Army is busily preparing for its own community meal.

“We served about 350 people last year,” said kitchen coordinator Marjorie Minckler. “And, we didn’t run out of anything.”

The local Salvation Army chapter has been hosting the dinner for several years, each time putting on a spread aimed at providing a free holiday meal to the less fortunate.

“I feel very good about it,” Minckler said of hosting the meal. “I love to cook and I love to serve. That’s why I do what I do at the Salvation Army.”

Last Thanksgiving was Minckler ’s first time overseeing the community meal, assisted by her daughter, Lilian LaPier, who also works at the local Salvation Army. Both were overwhelmed by the turnout.

“It’s amazing how many people came out,”

said LaPier. “You don’t realize how many people come to it until they’re all there.”

“I’m happy everybody gets to go to it,” said Minckler. “And, I’m glad I’m a part of it.”

Preparation for the meal typically begins

three to four weeks in advance, said Minckler, with she and LaPier knee-deep in last-minute food prep.

“We’re working on squash and stuffing and doing all the upcoming preparations for the

meal,” Minckler said last week as she stood in the kitchen at the South Catherine Street Salvation Army center.

“We’ve been working on squash all day, and we’ve only got three pans done,” said LaPier, laughing.

Donations from the community have begun to pour in for the meal, which relies heavily on the generosity of people in the North Country.

The preplanned menu will consist of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, squash, cranberry sauce, apple crisp, apple pie, pumpkin pie, cheese and crackers, pepperoni and dinner rolls.

Currently, Minckler said she is in need of more hams, canned vegetables and pies, if people are willing to donate them. Monetary donations are also accepted to help offset the cost of the meal.

“Every little bit helps,” she said.

The meal will be hosted at Elks Lodge 621, 56 Cumberland Ave., next Thursday, Nov. 25, beginning at 12 p.m. Seating will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Transportation will be provided to and from the Salvation Army and Plattsburgh Housing Authority senior living complexes.

Upcoming workshops geared toward aspiring business owners, cheese lovers PLATTSBURGH — Can you say “cheese?”

The Northern New York Regional Foods Initiative of Cornell Cooperative Extension will host workshops on how to start an artisan cheese business and making your own cheese Monday, Nov. 29, and Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Clinton Community College.

The workshops will give aspiring local cheesemakers — and those simply interested in the art of making cheese — the opportunity to work with Vermont Master Cheesemaker Peter Dixon, who has been making cheese since 1983.

“These classes are excellent for anyone interested in making handmade artisan cheeses using the traditional methods I have studied in Europe, North America and the Balkans,” said Dixon.

“Artisan cheeses are now an integral part of the localvore movement and present solid and lucrative business opportunities for

entrepreneurs.”

Dixon, a private dairy foods consultant since 1996, has helped people make cheese across the United States and in places like Macedonia, Albania and Armenia as part of community and agricultural development projects. He has started several cheese companies in Vermont, including Guilford Cheese Company in Guilford and Westminster Dairy in Westminster West. He has been an artisanal cheesemaker for Shelburne Farms, the Vermont Butter and Cheese Company, and most recently for the Consider Bardwell Farm in West Pawlet, making cheese from Jersey Girls Farm milk.

In addition to being a master cheese-maker, Dixon has designed cheese caves, developed signature cheeses, and assisted new business start-ups and existing cheese company expan-

sions. Dixon’s classes attract commercial and homesteading farmers, chefs, winemakers and brewers, cheese mongers and makers, and food writers.

“Interested in Starting an Artisan Cheese Business?” — the two-day workshop for cheese entrepreneurs — will cost $100 to attend, which includes course materials, lunch and beginner cheesemaking instruction. Those workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

“Interested in Learning How to Make Cheese?” — the one-day workshop for cheesemaking beginners — will be offered from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 29. The cost to attend is $35 and includes course materials and refreshments.

Lady Cougars take home top distinction

The team won their final match of the season against Genesee Community College of Batavia at Prince George Community College in Largo, Md., Nov. 7. There they were declared the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III champions, the first team at CCC to ever have the distinction.

A special ceremony was held for the ladies Nov. 10, where family and friends filled the seats and numerous political and academic leaders congratulated the team.

“This is such an honor, not just for Clinton Community College, but the entire North Country and particularly for women,” said Assemblywoman Teresa R. Sayward, R-Willsboro. “Very often it’s the guys that get on the front page of the newspaper with all the pictures and the splash and the hoorah, but we have a group of women here who’ve done more than most of our male teams have been able to accomplish this year and we’re just so proud of you.”

The team returned home with 17 straight wins under their belts, even though they began the season with a “shaky start.”

“What they demonstrated is what a can-do attitude and with the team work that they have demonstrated, that is a powerful combination. That’s very tough to beat,” he said.

Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, also noted the girls overcame years of competition to join as a team.

“As I looked through the list of you who are on the team and I realized most of you, if not all of you, competed against each other. I’m sure for many years,” Duprey explained.

“And to take that competition, join together, and become national champions, says volumes for each of you as young ladies and certainly your two coaches.”

Duprey added once the Assembly is back in session, both Sayward and she would bring forth a resolution honoring the team.

Resolutions were also passed by the Plattsburgh Town Council, presented by Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett, and the Faculty Council of CCC, presented by David Swarts.

Following the tournament, McIntosh and Chelsea LaRose took home National Tournament honors, being named to the All Tournament Team. Kelly Lucia was named Tournament Defensive Player and Kim Dragoon was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Dixon was named Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Coach of the Year just prior to the tournament and also took top honors being named Most Valuable Coach of the tournament.

Boogeying to sounds of the Bootleg Band

The Bootleg Band has evolved since it was formed in March 1994 by bassist Bruce Danville, Bruce’s son, Scott Danville, Bruce’s daughter, Kristin Delisle, and drummer Doug Stone. In June 1994, vocalist Shelly Weston and fellow Beezwax bandmember guitarist Vinnie Rock joined the combo. Scott and Kristin left the band later that year and the group continued on as a four-piece until Shelly’s husband, Brock Weston, from the band Crosscut, joined in 1996.

The progressive rock group has performed together extensively throughout Northern New York, Vermont and New Hampshire through the years, weathering the retirements of drummer Doug Stone and guitarist Vinnie Rock. The band added Sean Fitzpatrick on drums in 2007 and Brandon Frenyea on vocals and guitar in 2008.

The Bootleg Band today consists of Bruce Danville on bass guitar and keyboards, Shelly Weston on vocals and keyboards, Brock Weston on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Frenyea and Fitzpatrick. In addition to the players, the band is supported by sound engineer “Super” Dave Boudrieu and lighting tech Caroline Danville.

The winning band was decided by a voting system over a fourweek competition, with The Bootleg Band being the only band from New York to perform.

“Since we were an unknown in Vermont, we didn’t have much support. So, we had to ‘import’ our support,” said Brock.

The band chartered a 55-passenger tour bus, filling it to capacity.

“If we had more time, I think we could have filled two busses,” said Brock.

Though The Bootleg Band didn’t win, it was “the most fun a band could have and still lose,” said Brock. That, he attributes to the fans who follow the band.

“Our fan base in the area is made up of awesome and super loyal people ... and we thank them for being there,” said Brock.
