Eyecare for the Adirondacks, Theresa Guynup honored

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s Club has named its honorees for Employer of the Year and Business Woman of the Year.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks and Theresa Guynup were given the recognition, respectively, during a ceremony at Cricket’s Restaurant in Peru Oct. 26.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks — with offices in Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Malone — was nominated by Betsy Morrow, Morrisonville, who is a business teacher at CV-Tec. In her nomination, Morrow stated she has observed the growth of Eyecare for the Adirondacks facilities and staff “for years” and credited the business for promoting employees from within, several of which being Morrow’s former students.

“They have always been very supportive of my student interns and have hired many of them,” said Morrow. “They regularly cross-train their employees to learn all of the phases of the eye care industry.”

Morrow further stated the team at Eyecare for the Adirondacks is regularly involved in the community, including Dr. Kjell Dahlen.

Theresa Guynup, holding award, was named Business Woman of the Year by the Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s Club. Also honored was Eyecare for the Adirondacks, which received recognition as Employer of the Year.

“Dr. Dahlen has been very involved with the Mayor ’s Cup sailing regatta as well as an auction for charity that the staff and patients do every fall,” said Morrow.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks is a business Morrow believes will be here “for the long haul.”

students there,” said Morrow. “With all of this growth, their employees have grown professionally with them ... I am not sure why Eyecare for the Adirondacks has not been recognized before, but they seem to be overdue.”

Faye Martineau, administrator of Eye Care for the Adirondacks, accepted the award on behalf of the business, sharing she thought the timing

was coincidental with a recent prediction she was given.

“I was at lunch last Wednesday and happened to read my horoscope which stated that good things will happen in your business world today,” she recalled. “When I get back from lunch, I had a phone call from Betsy Morrow informing me [Eye Care for the Adirondacks] had won this award.”

Martineau said she and her fellow employees are proud of the success stories they’ve had over the years with patients, whom they place as their “top priority.”

“We would be nothing without the community which supports us,” she said.

Theresa Guynup was equally as grateful upon receiving her recognition as Business Woman of the Year.

Guynup, who serves as a service coordinator supervisor for Residential Resources in Peru, was nominated by her fellow employees for exceeding expectations of her in her day-to-day job performance.

“Mrs. Guynup has dedicated her professional social work life to helping others in need,” Molly A.K. Farrington wrote in her nomination of Guynup. “She has earned a reputation of helping others in our community working at CVPH, UCPA of North Country, and currently Residential Resources ... In addition to her duties

at work, Mrs. Guynup has taken an active role in the community participating in various activities and events that again benefit others.” “[Guynup] is a passionate woman with a clear opinion,” Residential Resources president Kenda J. Howell wrote in her nomination. “Her unwavering advocacy on behalf of the people she supports is truly admirable.”

The words written about her left her feeling overwhelmed, said Guynup.

“It’s wonderful to know that people you work for and the people that are working for you are so supportive,” she said.

Guynup credited her strong work ethic to her mother, 95-year-old Claudette Schofield of Peru, who was unable to attend the award presentation.

“She was a working woman herself, serving as a nurse in the Army during World War II,” said Guynup. “She had a very strong, long career. She was my role model and my hero. She taught me what it is to be a working wife and mother.”

When it comes to being a success in her own career, Guynup said it was due to a combination of a supportive work environment and home environment.

“I’m really blessed that I have both,” said Guynup.

Spirit Air taking off

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — There’s a new airline service coming to Plattsburgh International Airport.

Spirit Airlines was announced as the newest service for the airport during a press conference Oct. 28. Spirit Airlines will begin nonstop service from Plattsburgh to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning Friday, Jan. 14, 2011. Nonstop service to Myrtle Beach, S.C., is expected to begin Sunday, May 15.

Garry F. Douglas, president of the PlattsburghNorth Country Chamber of Commerce, said Spirit Airlines was attracted to the growing number of people flying in and out of Plattsburgh International, which is expected to reach 85,000 to 90,000 people this year. Approximately 85 percent of those flying from Plattsburgh are from Canada.

“Those are the numbers that are bringing us the services we have and the services we will have in the future,” said Douglas.

Clinton County Legislator Robert J. Heins, chairman of the Clinton County Legislature’s airport committee, said given the airport was redeveloped from former U.S. Air Force properties nearly three years ago, the transformation in such a short time has been impressive.

“That’s truly an amazing scenario in just three

years,” said Heins. “We’re spiraling upward. It’s truly exciting.”

The decision to bring air service to Plattsburgh was one that has been in the works for the past two years, said Bobby Schroeter, senior director of consumer market for Spirit Airlines. Schroeter confirmed it was the high demand for vacation destinations like the Dominican Republic, Cancun, and Jamaica — which Plattsburgh’s Spirit Airlines flights will connect to — that demonstrated the need here, he said.

“We looked at a lot of different things, but everybody here has been clamoring for the Caribbean and low fares. It made sense for us,” said Schroeter.

“We’re really excited to get [service] going here ... and get some low-cost fares to everybody in the area. I know there’s going to be a lot of demand for this.”

“This finally puts the ‘International’ in Plattsburgh International Airport,” said Douglas. “And, it’s still just the beginning of the possibilities that will unfold here at Plattsburgh International Airport.”

Spirit Airlines service will begin with four nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale in January and increase with four more nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach in May. Information about Spirit Airlines may be found on-line at www.spiritair.com or www.flyplattsburgh.com.

sarah@denpubs.com BEEKMANTOWN — When Robbie Miller, and Carol and Abby Leggett lost all their belongings in a house fire Oct. 15, plans began to take shape to help them replace some of what they lost.

The fire happened at the family’s rented home on Spellman Road in Beekmantown some time around 3 p.m. Abby, who turned 14 that day, was the one to find the fire.

“She came home from school, went into the house and could smell smoke,” explained Carol. “She called her dad and she called 9-1-1, got the dog and got out.”

Abby’s dog, Ebby, then ran back into the house and into Robbie and Carol’s bedroom, where the fire began.

“I think she might have been looking for the rest of us or going to a safe place,” said Carol.

Abby then ran back into the house, was able to save Ebby and make it to safety.

However, she did lose three rabbits and Abby Leggett and her dog, Ebby, were able to make it out two Guinea pigs.

New bike racks to encourage cycling in community Ceremonial installation at Myers Fine Arts Building next Thursday

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — In an effort to encourage bicycling in the community, new bike racks have been added around the State University of New York at Plattsburgh campus.

The bike racks, which are far different from the current ones seen around campus, allow the bikes to be secured at the bikes frame, instead of the front wheel.

“It’s upping security, upping quality and providing just a better visual aspect as well,” said avid cyclist and SUNY Plattsburgh student John Pelletier.

Pelletier, along with Environment, Health and Safety director Keith Tait, began the legwork to get the racks put in place — which were funded by a Green Grant.

The Green Fee Program, which is administered by the Campus Committee for Environmental Responsibility, allows students the option of having a $3 fee added to their tuition bill for green initiatives. The fee is then used for grants to support various endeavors such as the campuses biodiesel generator and recycling bins.

The idea to utilize a grant began when

Pelletier was studying abroad in the United Kingdom, where he took a transportation land use and development course and participated in a bike share program.

“This is something that I thought would be [beneficial] to the community and really something that should have been done years ago,” he said.

Currently, eight racks have been installed since the end of October with a total of 36 to be installed throughout the fall and into the spring. Each rack can have two bikes locked to it.

The racks will be replacing the 20-yearold inadequate rusting racks, Pelletier said.

The racks still in good condition will be given to the Plattsburgh City School District.

Pelletier said since the new racks have been installed he has noticed some usage, although he feels it has been limited as students aren’t sure if they can be used yet.

In order to get the word out about the racks, Pelletier has planned a Campus Bicycle Parking Ceremonial Installation for Thursday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at Myers Fine Arts Building on campus. The event is open to the public, as Pelletier hopes the community will take notice of what is going at the university.

“It’s something that as a community we need to start looking at and going forward,” Pelletier explained. “This is something that

the university can pioneer in our area ... and the city and town can look at those and possibly move forward.”

“As a community member, even if you don’t bicycle, anything that encourages bicycles, reduces traffic congestion, reduces pollution, all sorts of other benefits to the health and wellness of the community,” he added. “This is just something that’s student-oriented, student-run, but for the Plattsburgh community. It’s not just for students, it’s for faculty and staff, and for visitors as well. Anybody’s going to be free to use these.”

Artists to be featured next Sunday at Tip Top Frames

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Photographer Shaun Heffernan and his wife drawer Amanda Palmer will feature their work at Tip Top Frames next Sunday, Nov. 14.

Heffernan and Palmer used to own a gallery on City Hall Place, but closed it down last year. This exhibit will be the first time since then Palmer has showcased her drawings.

“I have an art degree in print making and have been drawing since I can remember really,” said Palmer, who is also the director and curator of the Alice T. Miner Museum in Chazy. “I like to portray the natural world, but I also do a lot of imagery from my imagination and dreams.”

Palmer said Heffernan will not only showcase some of his photographs, but will also be signing copies of the 2011 Self Realization Fellowship calendar he will be featured in.

“He’s wanted to get into it for years,” Palmer explained of the calendar. “It’s one that we used to sell at our store and he’s bought if every year for many years because it’s just amazing photographs in it.”

Heffernan, who has been “capturing imagery” since 1969, sent in dozens of photographs, and the organization chose his Bleeding Hearts photograph, which will be featured in the 52-week calendar.

“I was completely elated,” Heffernan said. “It had been a goal of mine to submit imagery to these folks for consideration for several years and I finally carved out the time to do it.”

Heffernan said only 54 images are selected from more than 3.5 million submissions.

“I really view it as an honor and am humbled to be included,” he said. “There’s definitely some luck involved when there are that many photos for the editors to choose from, and I’ll happily accept that luck.

Heffernan’s photo, which he took in 2007 at Point au Roche, will be paired with a quote by Guru Paramahansa Yogananda which states, “Love is harmony and harmony is love … Love is the highest, the grandest, the most inspiring, the most sublime principle in creation.”

The idea of for the exhibit and calendar signing came after a conversation amongst Heffernan and Tip Top Frames Gallery and Art Center owner Skip Sprague and Tea & Treasures owner Judith Bentham-Beckley.

“We wanted to partner with them first of all so we could spend a little time with them and also to bring people into their gallery,” Palmer explained.

“They’re such wonderful people and they have such a great supportive attitude towards artists.”

Bentham-Beckley will be serving freshly-brewed tea and items from her store at the event. Prints of Palmer and Heffernan’s works will be available and Sprague will be available for people who want to have them professionally framed.

The gallery will be available for viewing at Tip Top Frames through the holidays.

“So if people can’t make it on Sunday, then they should definitely go by and check it out,” Palmer said.

Bailey honored for supporting mental health services

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Anne Bailey has been named the recipient of this year ’s Lillian B. Redcay Award.

The award was presented to Bailey during a reception at CVPH Medical Center Nov. 1. Bailey was recognized by the Clinton County Community Services Board for her more than 20 years of volunteer work in mental hygiene services.

During the reception, Bailey was credited for being “a valuable resource” during the formation of the Alliance for Mental Illness, which is today known as the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Champlain Valley.

The world of mental illness hit particularly close to Bailey and her husband, Jim, in 1995 when their son, David, committed suicide after a long battle with mental health challenges. Bailey was credited with taking a very personal tragedy and turning it into a “courageous, compassionate and committed attempt to assist all those affected by mental illness,” according to a letter of nomination for Bailey to receive the Redcay Award.

Steve St. Onge, chairman of the CCCSB who presented the award to Bailey, said

her story is one that is “very moving.”

“You’re a role model for all of us,” he said.

Sherrie Gillette, director of Clinton County Community Mental Health Services, who helped present the award to Bailey, agreed.

“Anne was one of the very first people I met when I came to Clinton County five years ago,” said Gillette, “and it was clear to me then that this woman is a strong advocate for [mental health] services.”

Bailey was humbled by the words of praise but managed to share her thoughts with those in attendance.

“I am very, very honored because it’s quite amazing to be in the company of those who have received the award in the past,” said Bailey.

“I’m very proud of her. She works so hard and is on the phone so much,” said Jim Bailey. “It’s well-deserved.”

The Lillian B. Redcay Award is given to those who have made “outstanding contributions to community mental hygiene services by a volunteer.” The award is given in memory of Lillian Redcay, a local college professor who had “deep convictions about the local mental health movement, family live and public service.”

Taste of the North Country returns for 15th year

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It’s the time of year that Jody A. Parks looks forward to every year — the annual Taste of the North Country.

Parks, who serves as executive vice president for the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce — the organization which puts on the event — said there’s much in store for this year ’s Taste of the North Country, now in its 15th year.

“We’ve really got a lot going on this year,” said Parks. “We have quite a few new participants, which I think speaks for the event.”

Taste of the North Country centers around displays and samples from local restaurants and vendors, which continues to grow year after year, said Parks.

“The tasting is an opportunity to see what lo-

cal restaurants and vendors have to offer,” she said. “And, these vendors and restaurants go all out. They do a really good job that night.”

This year ’s participating businesses include A & W, Adirondack Coffee Roasters, Agri-Mark / McCadam Cheese, Anthony’s Restaurant and Bistro, Dame’s Disc. Liquor and Wine Specialty Shop, DeLish by Irises, Dunkin Donuts, ELFS Farm Winery and Cidermill, Geoffrey’s Pub and Restaurant, The Ground Round Grill and Bar, Irises Cafe and Wine Bar, Karma Indian Cuisine, Kentucky Fried Chicken, L & M Discount Liquor and Wine, Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Liquor and Wine Warehouse, Michele’s Fine Dining, Moe’s Southwest Grill, My Cup of Tea, Ninety Nine Restaurant, Panera Bread, Rambach’s International Bakery, Rulf ’s Orchard, Sam’s Club, Smooth Moves, The Station Cafe and Gifts, Vesco Ridge Vineyards, and Wal-Mart SuperCenter.

Even though it’s called Taste of the North Country, the event is about more than just food.

It actually gives attendees a taste of the many items available at local businesses through its annual auction.

“We have some cool things this year as always,” said Parks. “We have everything from gift certificates to restaurants to toys for children to gift baskets to vacations to boat rentals.

Everything you can possibly imagine.”

Among the big-ticket items this year, is one of Schonbek Worldwide Lighting’s highlysought after crystal chandeliers, valued at $1,100. Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelry is also contributing a 14 karat gold amethyst briolette pendant this year, valued at $500.

“Grace Realty is even donating the use of a condo in Florida,” said Parks, referring to a one-week stay at the Barefoot Beach Resort in Indian Shores, Fla. “That’s something we haven’t had before.”

However, Parks noted people shouldn’t be intimidated by the value of some of the highend items. Many items are valued in the $20 range, but even big-ticket ones can go for a steal.

“That’s why it’s a good place to get your holiday shopping started,” said Parks. “There really is something for everyone. “ Money raised from Taste of the North Coun-

try helps the chamber of commerce with its continued efforts of promoting and marketing the region, said Parks, which is another reason to attend the event.

“It helps us with our continued promotion of economic development and small business support,” she said. “We can’t do that without events like Taste of the North County to help raise money.”

Taste of the North Country will be held at the Plattsburgh State Field House on Rugar Street Wednesday, Nov. 10. The event will begin with an auction preview at 5 p.m., followed by a silent auction and tasting from 5:30-7 p.m. The main auction will be held from 7-7:30 p.m.

Admission for the event is $18, with tickets available in advance or at the door.

Roy Hurd returns to Palmer Street Coffeehouse

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Palmer Street Coffeehouse will welcome back North Country favorite Roy Hurd this Friday, Nov. 5.

Hurd said he’s looking forward to his performance at the coffeehouse, a venue he considers to be more intimate that allows for closer interaction with his audiences.

“It’s an awesome spot,” said Hurd. “It’s not easy to find places are that great acoustically, but that place is built for sound.”

Hurd will perform many songs, including some from his latest album, “Chronicles From The Love Shack,” which”tells the stories of lovers and outlaws, of peaceful moments at home and in the natural world, and of life on the open road.” The album is filled with sultry and sweet songs, soft rhythms and pulsating beats.

Adirondack Life Magazine calls Hurd “the best known singer/songwriter in the Adirondacks” whose “appeal lies as much in his storytelling as it does his smooth vocal delivery and clear guitar work.”

Although Hurd is considered a legendary regional treasure for the Northwoods area, his music has impact far beyond its mountain borders. Hurd held a staff songwriting position in Nashville, Tenn., from 1990 to 2001, writing for two of the largest publishing companies in the world: Sony Music Publishing

and Warner/Chappell Music. Hurd has written deftly-crafted commercial country hits recorded by the likes of Paul Brant, David Kersh, Sonya Isaacs, The Oak Ridge Boys, Duane Steele, and The Gibson Brothers. Jo Dee Messina has recorded one of Hurd’s songs, “Nothing I Can Do,” on her platinum Curb Records release “Burn.”

Michael Knox, vice president with production/artist-writer development for Warner/Chappell Music, calls Hurd “a dynamic performer and a world-class singer/songwriter” who has “developed a following unparalleled in the Adirondack Mountains.”

“You can feel the journey through Hurd’s music and lyrics,” said Knox. That’s a rare gift. He is someone with a true identity, and one of my favorite songwriters.”

Palmer Street Coffeehouse, Plattsburgh’s original coffeehouse, is located in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4 Palmer St., and operates the first Friday of each month, October through June. Admission is $10 per person.

Doors for Hurd’s performance will open at 7 p.m. His performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Refreshments, including baked goods, coffee, tea and juices will be available.
