Their crime? Aiding and abetting the Muscular Dystrophy Association with the intent to help local residents living with muscular dystrophy.

The MDA Lock Up is a unique fundraising program that requires participants to raise money for area residents with the debilitating disease. This year, “bail” is set at $1,600, which will send two children to the MDA summer camp.

As part of the Plattsburgh Lock Up Wednesday, Oct. 27, local business people will agree to be jailed at Olive Ridley’s, the “maximum appreciation prison site” in order to raise bail money for the MDA.

Regardless of the amount the participants raise, the day will come when a law enforcement officer comes to their workplaces to take them into custody. Once at the maximum appreciation prison site, jailbirds are booked, photographed for the token mug shot, and put behind bars. For one hour, jailbirds can plead with their community to help them make bail, continuing their fundraising efforts right up until they are released for good behavior.

“With quite a few families in [Plattsburgh] that are involved withthe MDA, that travel to use the Burlington clinics, we expect a strong community response,” admitted Tallon.

While participating jailbirds can use traditional methods of raising bail money by asking family and friends, or setting up flyers at work, Tallon recommends using the on-line fundraising site. The site allows fundraisers to reach a wider network of people using a fairly convenient method of donating. Participants can also choose to use their own social networking sites to spread the news of their impending jail time. For MDA Lock Up jailbirds, the weeks leading up to the hour behind bars at Olive Ridley’s are spent fundraising using the variety of methods outlined by each participant’s parole officer, a member of the fundraising team for the MDA office servicing the north country. Parole officers are required to make weekly calls to check the progress of the participants.

Claire Tallon, the executive director for the MDA of eastern New York and Vermont, took time to comment in between her dizzying schedule of at least nine Lock Ups occurring all over the region, among the other events she directs for the MDA. She feels this year is showing strong potential to be just as successful as previous years.

“These fundraising events become a community effort,” she said. “The jailbirds are locked up together and because they know each other, their families, their friends, it becomes a full community event.”

So far, the Plattsburgh Lock Up has more than 100 participants registered. They hope to see as many as 250 citizens nominated to take part in this particular event. While most participants are nominated by past “jailbirds,” nominations can also be made by family, friends, or coworkers until Friday, Oct. 8.

Heart condition survivors share their stories Goheens, Adickes talk about importance of Heart Walk

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Having a heart attack at the age of 18 has been the scariest thing Richard Adickes has ever gone through, he said.

The 21-year-old State University of New York at Plattsburgh student recalled the episode during this year ’s Plattsburgh Start!

“All I remember is I was running a race, I blacked out,” said Adickes, who was honored at the event as a Red Cap Survivor. “I woke up on a hospital with tubes tied to my chest and doctors just surrounding me. I was very scared.”

It wasn’t until some time later Adickes learned he had suffered a massive heart attack. The news didn’t make sense to Adickes, who was, by all other accounts, a healthy teenage boy.

“It came as a huge shock because I ran every day. I was always physically active. I always did the right things and I didn’t understand why my body wasn’t working or why I was given this burden,” said Adickes.

son for his attack, said Adickes. Eventually, it was chalked up to a possible birth defect in his heart.

Regardless of the reason, Adickes’ incident gave him a newfound outlook on life, he told the crowd of more than 1,300 people last Saturday.

“It makes you appreciate life a little bit more, without a doubt,” he said.

The heart attack hasn’t slowed him down, however ’. Adickes is still very active as a member of Plattsburgh State’s cross country team and indoor-outdoor track program.

“I firmly believe if I wasn’t a cross country runner, if I wasn’t as physically fit, I would not have survived that heart attack,” he explained. “So, I try to keep it up every day.”

Christopher Goheens, a 9-year-old boy from Peru, also knows what it’s like to go through heart-related issues. Goheens suffered from complications from hypolastic left heart syndrome last December, forever changing his life.

“I spent most of summer in Boston Children’s Hospital and after many procedures and several operations, I’m finally doing better,” Goheens told the crowd.

Goheens, gripping a paper with his speech, told the audience it was the power of prayer, wonderful doctors and the support of people who support the American Heart Association that was the reason he is alive today.

“I am living proof that research works,” said Goheens.

Scott Bombard, chairman of this year ’s Heart Walk, agreed, noting the important mission of the event in raising money for research like the kind responsible for saving the lives of people like Christopher.

you help to fund,” he told the audience. “In New York State alone, we fund almost $30 million in lifesaving research ... The more walkers, the more you raise for research and also the more walkers you have, the more people you have trying to live a fit and health lifestyle.”

Preliminary totals show this year ’s Heart Walk has $130,000 toward its $165,000 goal,

with pledges still coming in, said AHA senior regional director, communications Katherine McCarthy.

“That’s hats off to the community. It’s been tough years for the community, but to have this happen is excellent,” she said.

Donations are still accepted for another month, so people can still go to www.plattsburghstartheartwalk.org to donate.

PLATTSBURGH — Although it is just barely fall, some local vendors are already in the holiday spirit.

Representatives from various homebased businesses such as Pampered Chef, Scentsy Candles, Stampin Up, Tastefully Simple, and Celebrating Home, will be gathered at the Hampton Inn on State Route 3 this Saturday, Oct. 2, from 2-6 p.m. for one-stop shopping.

Ellie Roberts, organizer of the event and a consultant of Touchstone Crystals, said the event began last year as a way to

benefit both vendors and clients.

“It was just a way for women to get together and share what they do with other women in the area,” Roberts explained, “and it went really well.”

Typical of many home-based businesses, people gather at parties to learn what they can buy. At this event Madison Handbags consultant Jamie Dowler said that’s not necessary.

“It’s a way to buy things without having to host a party in your home or attend a party,” Dowler explained. “You can buy stuff that day.”

The event will also give people plenty of time to mingle, listen to holiday music, enjoy some snacks, and enter to win

a few door prizes. It will also make it an easier shopping experience than waiting until the holidays.

“You don’t have to shop in the crowds,” said Roberts. “You can just shop in one little area. Get a gift for your loved one or you can get something new that you’re not used to having.”

Both Roberts and Dowler said the event would also be good for men to attend, as there will be many gift options for the women in their lives.

“If guys are interested in looking, I would recommend they come,” said Dowler.

Mayor to participate in inaugural ‘polar plunge’ Plattsburgh City Beach to host Freezin’ for a Reason event Nov. 13

PLATTSBURGH — Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak will soon be among those “Freezin’ for a Reason.”

The mayor responded positively to a challenge from Clinton County Sheriff David N. Favro and Clinton County District Attorney Andrew M. Wylie during a press conference held Sept. 24, at City Hall. The challenge? That the sheriff and the D.A. would take a dip in Lake Champlain Saturday, Nov. 13, in the inaugural Freezin’ for a Reason polar plunge — if the mayor does.

“You’re going to see me with a shirt on, but I’ll be there,” Kasprzak said as he accepted the challenge.

The polar plunge will be held at Plattsburgh City Beach as a fundraiser for Special Olympics New York, an organization supported by members of law enforcement from across the state.

The organization hosts an annual state competition for those with intellectual disabilities, which costs approximately $400 per athlete to compete, said Sue Ewing, a law enforcement officer involved with planning the event.

“The goal is to get the people out there doing this plunge to make a goal of $400 so that way each person would be able to send an athlete to the games,” said Ewing. “Our personal goal is to see this community raise $25,000, but, any donation will be gladly accepted.”

Currently, New York States hosts the largest state Special Olympics program in the nation, serving more than 46,000 athletes. The Plattsburgh polar plunge will help send people from this region to year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults alike, said Kasprzak.

“We need to help raise funds for this wonderful group of folks,” said the mayor, as he was joined by local law enforcement, district attorneys and representatives of the PlattsburghNorth Country Chamber of Commerce. “I real-

ly have to tell you how important it is for all of us to get involved.”

Those interested in signing up for Freezin’ for a Reason may go on-line to www.specialolympicsny.org and click on the “Polar Plunge” icon. There, visitors can learn how to participate by collecting pledges from the community to participate. The Nov. 13 plunge will start with registration at 9 a.m., with the plunge to follow at 12 p.m.

Those participating will also be eligible to earn polar plunge merchandise such as hooded sweatshirts based on the level of pledges collected. Also, a contest will be held for best costumes and best team costumes for high schools and colleges at the plunge.

“The people that raise the most money — whether it be a high school student, a college student, or person from a large business or a small business — we’re going to recognize that by giving them a gift,” said Ewing. “We’re trying to make it a contest within a contest so every person will be recognized one way or another.”

“It’s a wild, crazy and fun event that’s going to raise awareness and funds for the dedicated athletes of the Special Olympics,” added Kasprzak. “It really makes me proud as mayor that this is an event that we’ve never had before.”

Happy birthday, Lorena

Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When Lorena Weldon was born, the automobile was a relatively new invention, electricity and indoor plumbing were far from being found in every home, and women having the right to vote was another decade away. However, when Lorena celebrated her 100th birthday Sept. 3, she reflected on how different the world is today.

Lorena was born in Saranac Lake, the daughter of Philmore and Ellen Bressette. However, her stay in Saranac Lake was shortlived as she recalled her parents moved to Saranac the following year, taking up residence in the Centennial House, a house which still stands today on Ganong Drive.

“I was probably a year-old when my family moved there and I lived there almost all my life,” recalled Lorena. “Saranac was a wonderful little town.”

Lorena married in 1939.

Lawrence Weldon was her husband for 31 years and even still

she thinks back of him with fond memories.

“I had a wonderful husband,” said Lorena. “We got a long very good together. He was so good.”

What has Lorena’s key to a long marriage?

“We were always together,” she said. “We were happy.”

Though Lorena and her husband never had any children of their own, that didn’t keep her from caring for children. Lorena spent a great deal of time caring for the children of a Plattsburgh couple, who remember her caring for them and still keep in touch to this day, said Lorena.

Lorena’s main career, however, was working in the cafeteria for the Saranac Central School District, a job she held for 24 years.

Over the years, Lorena said she’s witnessed many changes, most of which she considers “wonderful.”

“There were a lot of changes.

There are so many I can’t remember all of them,” she said.

One that does stand out is when she was finally able to turn on a switch for a light, rather than

fetching the kerosene.

“It was wonderful when we went from lamp light to electricity,” she said.

Inventions like the washing machine also took a lot of back breaking work out of household chores.

“Oh, that was wonderful,” Lorena said of the washing machine. “That was better than using the scrub board.”

These days, Lorena lives at Meadowbrook Healthcare and spends much of her time reading, playing cards and going to bingo.

“If I could walk around, boy, I’d do something,” she said.

That doesn’t mean Lorena’s not active, however. Among her activities at Meadowbrook, Lorena is a regular during exercise classes.

Is that the key to her longevity?

“I have no idea,” Lorena said, laughing.

As for her plans for the future, Lorena said she’s leaving that up to a higher power.

“I’ll stay as long as God leaves me here,” she said, with another laugh. “When he calls for me, I’ll go.”

eptember was an extremely busy month with budget meetings, events, and activities!

We began September with a press conference announcing that on Jan. 8 and 9, 2011, the Crete Memorial Civic Center will be holding an Eastern SnoCross Event.

Mike Perrotte and Steve Fuller of Airborne are working with the city to bring hopefully more than 5,000 snowmobile enthusiasts to the area to watch outdoor snowmobile racing.

The next week brought all the Battle of Plattsburgh activities which I feel is the premier event in the North Country. I read a proclamation at the annual POW/MIA Service at The Old Base Chapel. This event is very emotional and an important reminder of those who have provided the freedoms we all enjoy each day. I welcomed hundreds of Boy Scouts to the area on their 100th Birthday of Boy Scouts of America.

What a courageous person she is. We announced the Polar Bear Plunge will be Nov. 13, at the Plattsburgh City Beach for the Special Olympics. I guess I will be participating in the cold plunge in Lake Champlain for this wonderful cause!

We have spent much of the month working on the Mayor ’s 2011 budget, which I will announce by the end of September. It has been a challenge and we will do the best we can in difficult times. As usual, my office continues to handle constituent issues and concerns. Someday I should write a book on all the calls my office has received the last four years! It would be interesting reading! Fall weather is here so enjoy October before winter arrives!

he transition from summer to fall has been moving along with seasonal and weather related preparations as well as the development of a new budget for 2011. It is a busy process for us to prioritize the needed expenditures for the coming year while planning and investing in the future. To focus on a bare bones budget is to focus on stagnation and failure. Unfortunately the cost of doing business, providing benefits for employees, purchasing equipment and materials just doesn’t go down. Like others, we too are facing reductions in aide to municipalities and grant funds are few and hard to find.

To keep the progress going, we must partner with others who share the same values and goals.

I remain optimistic the future will be better. The continued expansion of commercial and residential properties is encouraging. This fall will see a number of projects come to fruition as we continue to plan for new projects in the spring. Our offices and departments remain busy as the growth challenges their ability to keep up with limited resources.

We have made a number of changes along the way to help reduce the cost of government in the town of Plattsburgh, but most savings are lost with increased cost in operations. I believe the best thing we can do to help secure our long term economic stability is to position our community for continued

economic growth that will bring more jobs while building our tax base. This takes time and resources.

We must partner with developers and work with the few remaining funding opportunities to help bring incentives to our region. The collaboration I have seen between the different agencies that are working to achieve this goal is encouraging. There are many incentives and projects in the that most residents would not be aware of, but it’s that collaborative effort that has kept us ahead of other municipalities and will continue to make us a positive and proactive community that attracts investment and development. My day would be much easier if I just did the office and desk work. That is not enough; I must also look for opportunity and do the networking that will build our town. I am committed to remain proactive and aggressively seek or create new opportunity.

Stay positive and remember though you may not have extra money to help a neighbor or favorite charity, you have skills, service and commitment of time that is often more welcome and more productive. Together we will succeed!

Living with interstitial cystitis

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CUMBERLAND HEAD — The month of October is Interstitial Cystitis Awareness Month, but for people like Wendy Farrell, there doesn’t have to be a month on the calendar to be aware of what can be a very painful urinary bladder disease.

Farrell was been living with interstitial cystitis, commonly referred to as IC, for more than a decade. However, it wasn’t until about two years ago her condition was formally diagnosed.

“The doctors I saw didn’t know what it was,” said the 31-year-old Farrell. “A lot of times they thought it was a urinary tract infection, but there was no sign of infection.”

It wasn’t until consulting with a urologist in Williston, Vt., and undergoing a series of tests that Farrell was diagnosed with IC, she said.

“What they do is put you [under anesthesia] and fill your bladder and see how the inside of it looks when it is stretched,” explained Farrell. “People with IC have a lot of ulcers or red marks inside their bladder.”

Though many of the signs of IC

appear the same and are marked with frequent and painful urination, some experience varying degrees of pain in the bladder or pelvic region.

Pain typically increases during urination and sexual intercourse, making it very difficult for someone with IC to enjoy a normal life.

“It’s different for everybody,” Farrell said of the level of pain. “But, for me, it’s living every day with constant pressure and pain. It’s uncomfortable.”

“Thankfully, I have a great husband who is very understanding and there for me for everything,” she added.

Many things affect the level of pain she feels, said Farrell.

“Food affects it. Stress effects it,” she said. “And, the best way to describe it, so other people could understand it, is that it feels like I have razor blades inside that are moving around as I’m walking or moving.”

According to the Interstitial Cystitis Association, IC is a condition found predominantly in women, with research showing up to 12 percent of women may have early symptoms of IC. Although a staggering number, Farrell believes not many know of

the condition which, as she states “can greatly impact your life.”

“It’s extremely lacking,” she said of awareness of IC. “There’s not much awareness about it. When I talk about it, people ask me, ‘What’s that?’ They’ve just never heard about it.”

However, through on-line support groups and organizations like the Interstitial Cystitis Association and the Interstitial Cystitis Network, awareness is growing, said Farrell. As awareness grows, hopefully more can be done for people with IC beyond the only real effective treatment, which is pain management, she said.

“I take 17 pills a day to help with the pain,” said Farrell. “It makes it very difficult because there are days where I’m deciding which is more important, trying to work through the day or be home with pain medicine.”

The only other procedure that helps — albeit in a small and brief way — is hydrodistention of the bladder. The process, mainly used for examining the bladder, involves using a common local anesthetic such as lidocaine to coat the bladder in order to stretch it without causing

the patient pain. The anesthetic provides temporary relief for the patient, which, in Farrell’s case, has lasted as long as a few weeks.

However, the temporary positive effects of hydrodistention are just that — temporary.

“Some people go into remission and they don’t even know why.

They’re just happy and can enjoy it,” said Farrell, who is hoping to one day be that lucky and to have her pain subside. “I’ve just been living

with this pain for so long.”

Second community garden to break ground 10/10/10

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — For many years, the late Mary Hulbert gardened in the lot next to Hulbert Bros. Inc. on State Route 3. Now, the Plattsburgh Community Garden Group will honor her memory with the groundbreaking of their second garden location.

Doug Butdorf, director of PCGG, said he was contacted by Hulbert Bros. to consider utilizing the green space.

“They came to us in that memorial spirit to ask us if we wanted to garden in their garden spot,” Butdorf explained. “It’s also the opportunity for a new location and we are very excited to be partnering with them and create a garden in that location.”

However, to get the Mary Hulbert Memorial Community Garden prepared for its first season, work needs to begin now.

“On the 10th we will be doing a ground breaking,” said Butdorf. “The work of reclaiming that garden and its overgrowth of the last several years and turning it back into and preparing the soil for a nice allotment style garden for the 2011 growing season.”

The 10th is also known as 10/10/10 Global Work Party — an event put together by 350.org, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire people to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis.

“What we think that the benefit of gardens is for climate change is that when you grow your own produce, you reduce your carbon footprint by reducing the amount of fossil fuels that are needed to grow the vegetables that you would otherwise purchase at the super-

market,” Butdorf said. “Plus, we think people will be healthier. They’ll be spending more time outdoors, digging in the dirt.”

“We hope that those things help connect them to the soil and the earth,” he added, “and subsequently help provide them with some understanding of what it is to live here on this planet.”

However, to make the 10/10/10 event a success, Butdorf said action needs to be taken locally and politically.

“Growing gardens in a public space for personal consumption will certainly have some small affect, but the larger effect is the visibility to the community that we’re taking these steps and that we’re interested and active in taking these steps,” he said.

To clear the space, Butdorf is hoping community members will step up to the plate, bring their gardening tools and spend the day recreating the garden.

“We’re hoping to attract anyone in the community … who wants to help us grow that garden or build that garden, and also who wants to take a step in this Global Work Day for climate change,” said Butdorf. “Anyone’s welcome.”

Butdorf added the day will be hard work both in gardening and on a political level.

“Our hope is to have Congressman [Bill] Owens there as well as some other local political people and other people so we can really build an event,” he said.

Roller derby fundraiser on Saturday PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh’s roller derby team, the North Country Lumber Jills, is hosting a fundraiser featuring live music and a Chinese auction. The “Rockin’ Roller Derby” will take place this Saturday, Oct. 2. The team has arranged the event in support of the continued efforts to introduce roller derby to the North Country.

ALBANY — The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has announced 2010 summer-end attendance figures.

According to Commissioner Carol Ash, more than 42 million people visited state parks during the 2010 summer season. Statewide attendance was up 1.4 million park visitors over 2009, reflecting a 3.5 percent increase.

“It’s encouraging that public visitation to our state parks remains very strong in the current economic climate,” Ash said. “Despite starting the season with uncertainty, park visitation rebounded and we even saw a healthy increase in attendance over last year that was aided by spectacular summer weather.”

In addition to the park attendance, Ash announced that year-to-date sales of Empire Passports increased by 36 percent. A preliminary count of sales for the 2010 season totaled 67,402, up from 49,506 in 2009.

“Empire Passports offer a real value for park goers,” said Ash. “The $65 annual pass offers unlimited day use vehicle entry to New York’s state parks and recreational facilities.”

The number of booked nights at state parks campgrounds to date totals nearly 540,000, representing a decrease of 3 percent from 2009, which was a record year for camping.

Ash welcomed the overall strong attendance figures, considering some parks and historic sites opened several months late and a number of high profile events didn’t take place this season, including the Fourth of July fireworks display at Jones Beach State Park.

Ash also acknowledged the uncertainty at the beginning of the season likely resulted in people making alternative plans for such offerings as campsites, pavilions and playing fields.

“Overall, we had a tremendous season and we hope that our visitors enjoyed their time swimming, camping, golfing, hiking and touring at our parks and historic sites,” said Ash. “We now turn our attention to the fall season.

From fall camping and festivals to experiencing the spectacular fall foliage from a trail or a kayak we look forward to welcoming millions more visitors to our properties.”

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined. This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.

• Women age 65 and older are less likely to get mammograms than younger women, even though breast cancer risk increases with age.

• Women below poverty level are less likely than women at higher incomes to have had a mammogram within the past two years.

If all women age 40 and older took advantage of early detection methods –mammography plus clinical breast exam – breast cancer death rates would drop much further, up to 30 percent.

Early detection of breast cancer is the single-most effective way to beat the disease. That is why it is essential for women to conduct their own breast exams to discover any potential anomalies early on.

While doctors stress the importance of self-examination, many women still show up for routine wellness visits admitting they don’t do examinations because they simply don’t know how. Perhaps because the practice was given the formal name “breast self-exam.” Today, however, doctors tell women to have “breast

self-awareness.” That means women don’t have to follow a set protocol regarding checking for breast changes, and simply being aware of how the breasts look and feel is key.

Why the change in the formalities?

Doctors have determined that most women notice a lump in their breasts while doing routine activities, such as bathing or dressing. They also figured out that a formal method of examining the breasts was not necessary. Lumps can be found simply by touching the breasts in any pattern, as long as the entire breast is checked.

To demystify the process even further, follow these guidelines.

• Breasts are best checked for changes directly after a menstrual period. At this time the breast tissue will be softer and less tender due to diminishing hormone levels.

• Look at the breasts every day and notice their appearance and shape.

PERU — It’s an event that’s been five years in the making.

Make-A-Wish Idol will celebrate its fifth anniversary as it returns to Murphy’s Tavern in two weeks. The event, which raises money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast New York, has raised thousands of dollars to help grant wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Alyssa Rosio, owner of Absolute Entertainment DJ and Karaoke Services, Au Sable Forks, said she got the idea for the contest after participating in a similar event modeled after the popular Fox television show American Idol.

“I had a lot of fun as a spectator and a contestant, so I wanted to try and do it,” said Rosio. “And, it’s just grown every year.”

The first year Make-A-Wish Idol was held at Murphy’s, the competition raised $8,000. However, the event’s largest year was its third, when nearly $20,000 was raised in 2008.

That’s what Rosio kept in mind when this year ’s event almost didn’t happen. Traditionally, Make-A-Wish Idol is held in the spring but, due to other obligations, Rosio wasn’t able to host the event earlier this year.

“As the year wandered on, I was trying to decide whether or not to still [host the event],” said Rosio.

“But, then I thought about how that’s a big chunk of funding they’re going to miss out on if we don’t do something.”

Though Rosio had hoped to hold the event in April, she’s still optimistic there will be a good turnout during this time of year.

“Whatever we raise is more than they had, is how I look at it,” said Rosio.

Ultimately, Rosio decided the event will live on this year, though in an abbreviated format.

Instead of making Make-A-Wish Idol an eightweek event, the competition will be held for four weeks, every Friday at 6:30 p.m. from Oct. 15-Nov. 5.

The competition will again include cash prizes for top contestants and be rounded out by silent auctions and raffles between performances.

“That’s where we make most of our money,” said Rosio.

The event relies heavily on donations from the community toward the auctions and raffles, which Rosio said she is now actively pursuing.

The generosity she’s seen in the last four years is something she hopes will continue this year, she said.

There is no cost to watch Make-A-Wish Idol at Murphy’s, though the cost to enter the competition is $10. Participating or watching, either way, Rosio said she’d like to see as many people turn out as possible.

Parent’s Pizzeria has been serving up some particularly hot wings since earlier this year, issuing a challenge to their customers — eat a dozen of their hottest wings and they’re free. Sound simple? Don’t be so sure.

“We’ve actually had about 60 people try and had seven people do it,” said Chris Parent, owner of Parent’s Pizzeria.

What makes Parent’s wings so hot?

“We make our own suicide sauce here with chili and habanero and then I add an additive to make it a real challenge,” said Parent, who noted wings for the challenge are 10 times hotter than their normally hottest wings. “Oh, yeah. They’re hot.”

Casey Goddeau and his brother, Bow, took on the challenge — and won.

“It was a challenge,” admitted Casey.

“They’re huge wings, but they’re definitely a challenge. They’re spicy, but have a good flavor. My brother ate them a little quicker than I did.”

Bow said it “was probably the hardest challenge I’ve ever taken on.”

“The very first bite or so wasn’t bad. It was after that it started kicking in,” said Bow. “It was bad.”

“It kept getting worse and worse, the more I ate,” Bow added, laughing. Though the smell of the hotness is enough to make your eyes water and your nostrils tingle, Parent’s wings don’t make everyone’s taste buds tremble in fear, Parent admits.

“We’ve had some people say they’re the hottest thing they’ve ever ate and we’ve had some people say they make hotter,” said Parent. “I actually had a gentleman who did it in two and a half minutes then wanted the leftover sauce — because I mix it in a bowl

And, though some might consider taking on the wing challenge as a display of insane male machismo, it’s not only men who take on the task of downing the piping hot poultry pieces.

“I’ve had a few women try it. One girl ate seven,” said Parent.

So, for those who think they’re brave enough to take on his challenge, Parent has one thing to say.

“Stop by anytime,” said Parent.

Parent’s Pizzeria, located at 102 Sharron Ave., is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, 12-8 p.m. Customers can call ahead their wing challenge order to 563-5300, but Parent reminds them the challenge is for dine-in orders.

“I get a few people who call and ask if they can take them out, but I’m not going to know if you ate them or not,” laughed Parent.

CCE annual meeting/dinner Oct. 19 WEST CHAZY — The annual meeting and dinner of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Clinton County will be held Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, 60 W. Church St. After dinner, volunteers including board and committee members, 4-H leaders and Master Gardener volunteers will be recognized, staff will give program highlights and there will be an election of directors and appointment of program committee members.

The public is invited to attend and participate. The cost of dinner is $12 per person; reservations and payment are needed at the CCE office in Plattsburgh by Friday, Oct. 8.

The public is also welcome to attend the meeting only at 8 p.m. for no charge.

New venue for musicians and music-lovers alike

jeremiah@denpubs.com CADYVILLE — There’s a new venue in the local music scene.

Dr. C. Thomas Gerner has opened the doors of his Park Row home to the public, hosting a regular series of house concerts. The idea came about five years ago after Gerner saw English musician Francis Dunnery in concert in Burlington, Vt. “I remember being on his Web site and seeing he’s willing to play for you at your house,” recalled Gerner. “I talked to the woman who does booking for him and I asked her why he’d be willing to do that when he can play for 250,000 people with Robert Plant. I didn’t know why he’d want to play for 50 people at my house.”

Gerner said her response was that Dunnery got more enjoyment out of playing for smaller audiences.

“She said the intimacy of the musical experience is what’s he’s after as an artist,” said Gerner. “She said that 250,000 is great, but is sort of impersonal.”

Gerner eventually brought Dunnery to his home in Cadyville for a performance and has had him back several times, he said. That gave him the idea to invite in more artists.

“It finally dawned on me that I didn’t have to wait for Francis to host a concert,” said Gerner.

“It turns out that a lot of very talented artists are finding house concerts are cooler than performing at bars and bigger concerts.”

Gerner turned a spare room in his home into a makeshift concert hall, bringing in enough folding chairs and couches to seat 50 people, and installing a sound system that compliments the room’s natural acoustics.

Since formally establishing what he calls the “Cadyville Concert Hall,” Gerner has welcomed more than half a dozen artists, playing everything from blues to folk music. Having local musicians like Roy Hurd, Lita Kelly and Jay Lesage and internationally-known acts like Darden Smith and Francis Dunnery, create a good mix for music lovers, he said.

“I’m trying to balance between local people and some not-so-local people,” explained Gerner, who credits friend Tracy Gryger for helping

organize the regular concerts. “And the great thing is, [the concert hall] brings talent into the area that probably wouldn’t otherwise be here.

People who might be otherwise driving through on their way to Montreal.”

Mark Elliott, a singer/songwriter from Nashville, Tenn., was the most recent artist to play the Cadyville Concert Hall. Elliott credited Gerner and Gryger for bringing musicians and their audiences closer together through concerts like the one he played last Saturday.

“It’s the best thing for artists because you get to connect with your audience different than any other kind of venue,” said Elliott. “When your audience is physically closer to you, people let their guard down and they’re less nervous about talking with you. It makes for great interaction.”

As an artist, Elliott said being given the opportunity to play a house concert is a favorable one.

“It’s a great way to get exposed to new audiences and not have to worry too much about filling the seats,” said Elliott, “because the audiences for house concerts tend to be venue-loyal audiences.”

“I think the intimate atmosphere is the best part,” he added.

Though Gerner charges for admission to the concerts, the money goes directly to the artists performing, he said. It’s not about making a profit for himself, he emphasized.

“For me, it’s just the fun of doing it,” said Gerner. “It’s the opportunity of sharing this kind of stuff with my friends and their friends.”

The next concert at the Cadyville Concert Hall, 41 Park Row, will feature musician Paul Asbell from Burlington, Vt., Saturday, Oct. 9. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Other upcoming shows include performances by local musician Speedy Arnold and Dave Sancious with Joe Bonadio. Sancious is perhaps best known for performing with Bruce Springsteen’s The E Street Band.

Concert tickets may be purchased at Alpha Stereo on Smithfield Boulevard in Plattsburgh.

Tickets must be purchased in advance due to limited seating, noted Gerner.
