United Way to raise $750,000 with new fundraising campaign

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region Inc. has officially begun its 2010-11 fundraising campaign.

The nonprofit organization — which helps partnering agencies in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties — announced at its annual campaign kick-off breakfast Sept. 16, it aims to raise $750,000.

John C. Bernardi, the nonprofit organization’s executive director, explained the amount reflects both a continued need throughout the region and the inclusion of partnering agencies in Franklin County to be helped by the local United Way. “Our United Way is evolving. We’re growing, we’re evolving and we’re adapting,” said Bernardi. “If there was ever a time we needed to raise more money, now is the time.”

Kirk A. Stallsmith, general manager of the Plattsburgh Georgia-Pacific facility, who serves as chairperson of this year ’s United Way fundraising campaign team, said he hopes to build on the success of last year ’s campaign, which raised $700,000 for the United Way’s more than 30 partner agencies.

“We’re very blessed to have a group of people in the community with heart and commitment to the community,” Stallsmith said of past fundraising campaign supporters.

al $50,000 this year, Stallsmith said he feels confident people will see the need and once again step up to the plate to help.

“The challenge is there and I think we’re up to it,” he said.

Bernardi credited the work of the fundraising campaign for knocking on doors and asking people to dig a little deeper into their pockets this year to help the less fortunate through United Way.

“There’s just a great deal of synergy and energy and enthusiasm and it’s helped us be able to reach out to places that we’ve not been able to reach before,” said Bernardi. “I think we’ve built a network that has been really productive for us.

That is what makes the difference, people within organizations who are passionate about it and are willing to put time and effort into it. That’s what makes the campaign successful.”

During the event, Bernardi announced this year ’s “pacesetters” — businesses and individuals who begin early fundraising efforts — who have so far raised $164,719.84, bringing the campaign to 22 percent of its overall goal.

Bernardi said the money pledged so far is a promising sign of the campaign reaching its goal and building upon the more than 80,000 people the United Way was able to help last year alone.

“It is a huge challenge and we’re counting on people throughout the region to step up to the plate,” said Bernardi. “And, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much the dollar amount is. What matters most is how many people we’re able to impact in a positive way.

Cardinal Points earns Hall of Fame honors PLATTSBURGH — The State University of New York at Plattsburgh’s student-run newspaper, Cardinal Points, has earned a place in the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame.

The paper qualified for the honor by winning its 10th ACP All-American Award in an 11-year span. An induction ceremony will be held during the 89th annual National College Media Convention in Louisville, Ky., in October.

Also being honored at that event are SUNY Plattsburgh students Bradley Kasten of Hampton Bays, and Jameson Sempey of Ridge. They designed a two-page spread about international students that has become a Pacemaker finalist for infographic design.

This is another tremendous honor, said Cardinal Points advisor and Journalism Department chair Shawn Murphy, who called the Pacemaker the “Pulitzer of college media.”

The All-American Award, the Hall of Fame placement and the Pacemaker nomination are all part of a string of national newspaper honors that began not long after Murphy took over as newspaper advisor in 1997.

SUNY Plattsburgh journalism alumna Jennifer Meschinelli remembers Murphy’s early days as advisor. She was the first Car-

dinal Points editor to work with him.

“From the first moment he got here, he said it was going to be an award-winning newspaper,” said Meschinelli, who is now the special publications editor for the PressRepublican and an adjunct journalism lecturer at the college. “It was a tall order.”

But, coupling these high expectations with a lot of work evaluating student efforts, Murphy became the driving force behind these honors, said Meschinelli.

“Editors and staff have come and gone, but in the past 14 years there’s been one constant. That’s Shawn Murphy,” she said.

Murphy, on the other hand, credits his students.

“This award is not my award; it belongs to every student-journalist whom I’ve had the pleasure of advising on Cardinal Points since I arrived in Plattsburgh in 1997,” Murphy said. “I am merely the coach on the sidelines who offers advice about how this Cardinal Points team can improve their journalistic game.”

With that thought in mind, Murphy said of the award, “I was thrilled for all the student-journalists whom I have advised and who produced not just a quality newspaper for a campus audience, but a journalistic legacy.”

Cody Sarbou to be remembered with ride Sunday PLATTSBURGH — The Ride to Remember Cody Allen Sarbou will be held this Sunday, Sept. 26, at North End Harley Davidson, 569 State Route 3, beginning at 11 a.m.

Preregistration is preferred with a donation of $10 per bike and $5 per rider. If registering the day of, the cost increases to $15 per bike and $10 per rider. Waivers will be signed by biker and rider the day of the ride.

The ride will head up Route 3 to Silver Lake, then to Wilmington, onto Route 9 and back to Plattsburgh, ending at Olive Ridley’s where a fundraiser will be held. Those without a bike are still welcome to the fundraiser where there will be a spaghetti dinner, raffles, and silent auctions. Live entertainment will be provided by Bootleg. There will also be a DVD of Cody available for $5, T-shirts for $15, and biker scarves for $4.

Funds will go towards a Saranac Central Memorial Scholarship Fund, where Sarbou graduated high school.

Relay for Life event brings Kevin Sharp to town Oct. 3

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — Kevin Sharp is coming to the Clinton County Fairgrounds.

The nationally-recognized motivational speaker, entertainer and 20year cancer survivor will make an appearance Sunday, Oct. 3, as a thank you event from the Plattsburgh Relay for Life committee.

Sharp was scheduled to be the survivorship speaker at the Relay for Life event at the fairgrounds in June, but had to postpone due to a medical situation, said local Relay for Life public relations representative Bonnie L. Berry.

“He was supposed to come in for just an hour,” Berry said of the June event, “Eagle Country 97.5, Pepsi, and World Warehouse [and Distribution] were the three who brought him in with contributions. But, now he’ll be coming here for a couple hours.”

“He said he would come back and he’s coming back,” added Berry.

“This is wonderful.”

The Oct. 3 event will be free of charge to the community and include a performance from The Boobie Sisters, a breast cancer survivor troupe, and remarks from Relay for Life chairman Mark Brown Jr. In addition to speaking and performing, Sharp will be on-hand to sign autographs at the event.

The people of the North Country are to thank for another successful year of raising money for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life, said Berry, adding to the importance of hosting the upcoming event.

“We’re so grateful to our community for raising $231,000 for cancer research,” said Berry, who noted that amount exceeded the committee’s goal by $21,000. “That’s amazing to think our small community raised that much money. The only way we’re going to find a cure for cancer is through research. And, our small community is making gains toward finding that cure.”

Motivational speaker and entertainer Kevin Sharp will make an appearance at the Clinton County Fairgrounds Sunday, Oct. 3. The event is free to all as a thank you to the community from the Plattsburgh Relay for Life committee.

School teacher earns national recognition

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com BEEKMANTOWN — The efforts of a teacher in the Beekmantown Central School District have not gone unnoticed.

Sixth grade science teacher Colleen Pandolph of Peru has been selected as a finalist from New York State for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Pandolph, who was nominated by former Beekmantown Middle School principal Sue Coonrod, was selected by a state selection committee of her peers.

The news was a pleasant surprise, said Pandolph, who has been teaching for the school district for the past nine years.

“It’s quite an honor,” said the Vermontville native and State University of New York at Plattsburgh graduate, “but I would rather bring recognition to the school than myself. I have great colleagues, a great team of teachers I work with at the sixth

grade level. The entire middle school is supportive.”

Principal James Knight said he is proud of Pandolph’s accomplishment and the recognition which demonstrates the caliber of teaching staff within the school district.

“Colleen is a perfect candidate for this level of recognition, due to her humble nature a dedication to students,” said Knight.

“I am confident that an award of this magnitude is not something she ever sought after as an educator, but it is the recognition she deserves as a teacher of high quality.”

Knight went on to say Beekmantown Middle School benefits from the Pandolph’s recognition by “allowing the spotlight to be drawn to one of its staff members who is a true representation of the entire staff as a whole.”

Pandolph’s nomination will be reviewed by a national selection committee in Washington, D.C. The committee will determine the winner of the Presidential Award this winter.

Consumers encouraged to shop locally Saturday NYPA campaign focuses on spending ‘$25 on the 25th’

I

t’s been said the best way to help the economy is often to shop locally. This idea has sparked a campaign known as $25 on the 25th.

The main goal of the campaign is to get people to spend at least $25 in a locally shop or restaurant this Saturday, Sept. 25.

The campaign originally began with the New York Press Association in an effort to “create some excitement in downtowns across the state,” according to NYPA executive director Michelle Rea. “Essentially the publishers came to the board and talked about how downtown merchants and Main Street merchants have been

really suffering for quite some time and they felt the newspapers should do something,” said Rea. “To make citizens aware of how vital the role is that downtown merchants play in distinguishing communities from one another.”

Rea explained NYPA felt that by newspapers banding together across the state, there would be more publicity. To help spread the word, they teamed up with the New York State Economic Development Council and the New York State Conference of Mayors to get the campaign up and running.

“Statistically, it’s proven that if the local residents support local businesses that there is a benefit to the community and to the businesses,” said Plattsburgh Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak. “I believe that the efforts by the local business community deserves as much support as possible by the residents of the city of Plattsburgh and I strongly urge and hope that local residents support the local merchants as much as possible on the 25th and continue to support them throughout the year.”

NYSEDC executive director Brian McMahon explained shopping local actually has numerous benefits.

“When we spend money in our community it comes back to us in the form of increased sales tax dollars, which get reinvested back into the community,” said McMahon. “But,

more importantly … I think it reintroduces and reacquaints the community with the quality and diversity of retail establishments within their community.”

The diversity of the establishments is what Rea considers another important aspect of the campaign.

“If we were all just big areas plastered with big box stores and chain restaurants, Plattsburgh wouldn’t be any different than Albany, wouldn’t be any different than Syracuse,” she said. “A unique brand of merchandising and menus and décor is what sets us each apart from one another.”

Economically, Rea broke down the difference between money being spent at local merchants, compared to big box stores.

“If a person or a family spends $100 a month with local merchants, $45 of that $100

stays local, circulating locally,” she explained. “If that same family spends $100 with a big box store, $14 of those dollars stay local. So, the impact for not only the merchants themselves, but also the municipal areas, in terms of payroll dollars recirculating and whatnot, it’s huge, it’s really significant.

Rea said if people show enough support for the project, NYPA hopes to have the campaign happen more than once a year.

“People need to remember that if you don’t want those stores to go missing or those restaurants to go missing, you need to support them,” she said.

Down syndrome doesn’t mean defeat, says Gaffney Motivational speaker demonstrates point by swimming across Lake Champlain

Now, she can add swimming across Lake Champlain to her list of achievements.

Despite being born with Down syndrome, a chromosomal disorder which affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States alone, Gaffney has challenged herself to show people living with Down syndrome are able to do many of the same things people without the condition can do. Her latest evidence came as she stepped upon the shore of Plattsburgh City Beach Sept. 18, after swimming more than 8.5 miles across Lake Champlain from South Hero, Vt., adding to her list of completed aquatic challenges that includes swimming across Lake Tahoe, Boston Harbor and the English Channel.

“It was something new and different and I love doing something new and challenging,” said the 39-year-old Gaffney, who also suffers from hip dysplasia.

and jet skis — Gaffney completed her personal challenge in less than six hours. However, it was an easier challenge than her lifelong battle to overcome the feeling of being different, she said.

When she addressed a crowd of more than 1,200 people the following day at Melissa L. Penfield Park, during the 13th annual Buddy Walk, Gaffney spoke about how much more of a challenge living with Down syndrome can be.

“Classrooms, school hallways, cafeterias and gyms can be pretty lonely places for people like me. Once we’re all out of school it can be even lonelier,” she said. “I’d like to sit at a table in a cafeteria and have others sit down next to me rather than pass me by or get up when I sit down. I would like to look up and see a friendly smile rather than look up and see someone look away.”

Though acceptance and understanding of people living with Down syndrome has grown, there is still stigma in the world and ignorance of the ability of someone with the disorder. That’s one of the reasons Cindy Rotz organizes the Buddy Walk each year with her husband, Tracy, in honor of their son, Brett, who has Down syndrome. The Rotzes are working to break down the negative barriers that stand in the way of people like their son, Gaffney, and countless others.

“We want everyone to see their abilities, not their disabilities,” said Cindy Rotz. “It’s important we bring people like Karen in to see all the great things people with Down syndrome are able to do. Everyone can learn from her.”

your mind to something and you work hard, regardless of who you are or what you have or don’t have, you can persevere if you put the work in,” said Tracy Rotz. “She’s done a ton for our walk and hopefully she’s brought more attention [to Down syndrome] and has given them more understanding.”

The most important message Gaffney wanted people to take home was physical differences many often associate with Down syndrome don’t define what someone with Down syndrome can do or who they are, she said.

“I know on the outside we look different, we talk differently, we walk differently. But, on the inside, we’re more like you,” Gaffney told the crowd. “We want the same things you do.

We want good friends. We want to belong. Just taking a seat next to me can make a big difference.”

McKibben hopes at the end of the day people will then contact their political leaders and urge them to “hammer out some legislation.”

“It’s important to do it in October and it will be important to do it for the next few years … to see if we can build a movement big enough, angry enough sometimes, urgent enough, passionate enough, beautiful enough to wield some real power,” he said.

However, McKibben admitted it’s possible there is nothing that can be done to make the change.

“There are scientists who think that we have waited too long to begin this task,” he said. “Clearly we’ve raised the temperature of the earth one degree and there’s another degree in the pipeline that we no longer can do much about with the carbon already emitted. But, there’s a big difference between two degrees and six degrees and that’s the question we face, whether it will be a difficult century, or an impossible one.”

Cupcake craze comes to downtown DeLish by Irises pursues the popularity of cupcake confections

By Katherine Crepeau Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — The long-awaited opening of DeLish by Irises Cupcake Bakeshop and Gourmet Deli will soon be here.

DeLish is set to open Friday, Oct. 1, in the newly-renovated former Oasis location next door to Irises Café and Wine Bar on City Hall Place. When the vacancy occurred last winter, Irises owner Carol McLean knew she could pair the nationwide popularity of cupcakes with the locally-loved confections of Irises.

“They’re cupcakes. They’re fun. It’s a feel-good business,” said McLean.

“And, it’s really worthwhile seeing people smile when they see all the different cupcakes.”

One of McLean’s staff, pastry chef Adrienne Dionne, has been using her baking degree from the American Culinary Institute at Hyde Park to create delicious desserts for the staff and patrons of Irises for the past two years.

Dionne’s cupcake creativity is one of the main reasons behind McLean’s decision to open a bakeshop right next door.

While the logo cupcakes are the “stars of the show,” McLean knows the importance of offering variety. The

menu at DeLish also includes pastries of all sorts, freshly-baked bread, breakfast pizzas, gourmet deli sandwiches, paninis, and salads. The drink menu is simple, but superior, with a sampling of locally-roasted coffee and loose leaf teas. The weekend menu will feature select gluten-free desserts. Seasonal offerings will also have a presence on the menu. For the harvest season, for example, Dionne has been developing an apple cider cupcake.

Dionne, another fan of variety, has no shortage of cupcake flavor combinations, nor any shortage of cupcake testers. The bakeshop manager and head baker has been hard at work, trying new flavors for her signature baked good, of which the staff at Irises has very willingly sampled.

Some favorites? A classic choice, the chocolate peanut butter cupcake, with peanut butter frosting; a twist on a seemingly simple idea, the almond joy cupcake, which uses a creamy almond filling; and after-dinner cocktail varieties.

“My favorite is the margarita cupcake,” admits McLean, which features a tequila syrup-soaked lime-flavored cake.

The kitchen will be kept running by Dionne and an assistant baker, while

patrons will be able to enjoy brunch and dessert items straight from the kitchen in the cozy 12-seated dining area or grab a breakfast sandwich to go from the deli case. McLean hopes to open a pantry from which customers can browse and shop. The pantry, which will occupy the space between Irises and DeLish, will stock international specialty foods, such as hard to find cooking ingredients for the adventurous baker. “[The pantry] complements the business because it has products we already use, like gourmet and unique products. It comes as second nature to us to use them as a retail items,” explains McLean.

In addition to the expansion plans of the bakery and pantry, DeLish will also allow for outdoor seating during the summer and fall of next year.

DeLish will aim to offer some taste for every taste, and even if customers aren’t able to stop by their downtown location, DeLish will cater nearby events with breakfast and lunch menu items. The expansive menu will be available on-line soon, attached to the Irises Café Web site.

Golf tournament north of the border marks 15 years Event honors man known for commitment to community

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com HEMMINGFORD, Que. — The Alain Fortin Foundation is something Cheryl Fortin wishes would never have to have been established, but it’s an organization that’s done much good in the Hemmingford community for the past 15 years.

The foundation was named after her brother-in-law whose life was lost in a tragic boating accident on Lake Champlain in 1995.

However, rather than let his memory fade, his family decided to establish the foundation with a purpose of helping his hometown of Hemmingford.

“Alain was very interested in helping the young and the old,” said Fortin. “The extremes of the community. The year before he died, he was actually standing outside — and it was one of the worst winter days — ringing the bell for the Salvation Army in Hemmingford on a blustery, wintry day. We want to continue to carry forward things he’s done in the past like that.”

The main way Alain’s family has been able to do that has been to host a special golf tournament each year at the Hemmingford Golf Club. The one-club tournament — which challenges golfers to use one golf club

throughout the 18-hole match — was the kind of game Alain enjoyed, said Fortin.

“Alain would get together with friends and they would play with one club the entire game and see how well they did,” recalled Fortin. “It was just for fun.”

“I’ve played it that way a few times and it’s definitely a challenge,” she added, laughing.

Over the past fourteen years, the Alain Fortin Foundation has raised nearly $60,000 for a variety of causes. The tournament has helped Hemmingford’s Christmas Basket Fund, which supplies underprivileged families in the community with food and gifts during the holidays, and even helped the “Don’t Sit Home Alone Christmas Eve Supper” at the Witsend Resto Pub provide nearly 40 people with a Christmas dinner and gifts. The generosity of the foundation is also felt year-round in donations made to local schools, sports teams, and the Guides and Scouts of Hemmingford.

Last year, the foundation — through the assistance of Pharmacie Catherine Plamondon — purchased a wheelchair for the Service d’Action bénévole, which helps provide transportation for the disabled to medical appointments. This year, the foundation aims to help provide necessary equipment to a senior living facility being built in Hem-

Conroy’s Organics to host wellness event Sept. 30

BEEKMANTOWN — Conroy’s Organics, 8173 State Route 9, will host a wellness event Thursday, Sept. 30, from 7-8 p.m.

The event will focus on alternative methods for promoting and increasing wellness through Nikken products.

“It’s the first one we’ve held at the store,” said event coordinator Danielle Giordano.

“They’ve invested a lot of money into research for all of these things that promote wellness,” said Giordano.

The products that will be discussed during the free event are centered around the Nikken principle, which focuses on five pillars of health — a healthy mind, healthy body, healthy family, healthy society and healthy finances.

In addition to helping people find ways to improve their health, the event will also show how people can improve their financial situation through Nikken by becoming a representative.

“It’ll also be a chance for people to improve their finances because they can learn more about doing this as a business,” said Giordano. “It’s a great group of people to be a part of.”
