Gaffney of Portland, Ore. Gaffney, a 32-year-old woman with Down Syndrome, has gained nationwide recognition in her role as president of the Karen Gaffney Foundation, which focuses on advancing the rights of those with the genetic disorder.

“She’s the best motivational speak I’ve ever heard,” said Rotz. “I think everyone should hear her speak.”

after Rotz had listened to presentations given by her in Denver, Colo., and Washington, D.C. Rotz wanted to bring her back this year to speak at the Buddy Walk, but Gaffney took the invitation one step further.

“When she was here last year, she spoke about swimming across Lake Tahoe to raise awareness for Down Syndrome and prove how if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything,” said Rotz. “Someone asked her what her next challenge would be and she said, ‘How about Lake Champlain?’”

And, from then, Gaffney decided she would swim an 8.5-mile stretch of the lake that divides New York and the Green Mountain State.

In advance of the annual Buddy Walk this Sunday, Sept. 19, Gaffney will swim from South Hero, Vt., to the Plattsburgh City Beach. She will be joined by a team of pacers who will get in and out of the water during the swim to help keep her on pace and on the route. Weather permitting, Gaffney will set out on her personal chal-

Gaffney will be back out in the community the following day when the North Country Down Syndrome Association kicks off Buddy Walk festivities at 12 p.m. Sunday. The event will begin with registration until 1 p.m., when the less than one-mile walk sets out from Melissa L. Penfield Park on Boynton Avenue. Walkers will reassemble at the park following the walk, at which time Gaffney will give a motivational speech.

“I think people are going to walk away thinking what an unbelievable individual she is and be very touched by it,” said Rotz.

There is no cost to participate in the walk, though donations for the North Country Down Syndrome Association will be accepted. Participants will receive a free T-shirt and wrist bands with statements in support of those with Down Syndrome.

With the dancing, both LeClaire and Hill hope people will come down and participate.

“We want it to be participation, we really do,” said Hill. “There’ll be performance and then we invite people to participate.”

People are also invited to bring their own instruments.

“We have local musicians coming down,” said LeClaire. “It’s going to be [Bryan Kieser] and some of his friends coming down to play music and he’s inviting everybody, if they have drums or whatever, to come down and play music with them.”

New Land Trust going to the dogs (and their owners)

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — Dorothy Douglas is looking forward to a nice walk in the woods with her dogs and she’s encouraging others to come along, too.

Douglas is helping coordinate a new event for the Clinton County Canine Club of Plattsburgh — a Meet and Greet Fall Foliage Walk — in partnership with the New Land Trust. The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 26, in recognition of National Responsible Dog Owner Month.

“We wanted to get people out because it’s a beautiful time of year and we wanted to show how the New Land Trust is a nice, safe place to walk your dog,” said Douglas. “[The event] is really a way to get the word out about both our groups.”

The club, which is “dedicated to helping the general public train their dogs to be good canine citizens,” has held meet and greet events in the past, said Douglas.

However, with increasing popularity of the New Land Trust — a

287-acre tract of wilderness in Saranac’s expansive backcountry – among dog owners, the setting seemed only natural for their latest get-together, she said.

“There’s a revamped interest in the New Land Trust,” said Douglas, who’s visited the property for several years. “There are constant improvements there all the time, with the trails and wonderful signage there. It’s a beautiful, beautiful resource and it’s so nice it’s so close.”

Douglas said she hopes the event will give the general public a better understanding about the Clinton County Canine Club and its multi-faceted mission.

“People know we offer obedience classes, but we have many different interests in our club,” said Douglas. “We have agility training, tracking, even therapy dogs. We also have a group of retired people who go into schools and give demos about how to approach dogs and that kind of thing.”

“We want people to come see what we’re doing, talk with members of our club, see what the New

The Sept. 26 walk will be held from 1-3 p.m., with New Land Trust guides on-hand for newcomers. Douglas asks those coming to the event to bring their own water and to wear shoes suitable for hiking. She also encourages people to bring their own bags for dog waste and proof of rabies vaccination for their dogs.

“We really have to ask for that,” said Douglas, who added dogs must also be kept on a leash at the New Land Trust.

Plattsburgh Start! Heart Walk returns next Saturday

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Wanda L. Flynn doesn’t just have one reason why she supports the American Heart Association. She has several.

The Morrisonville woman has been participating in the Plattsburgh Start! Heart Walk since 2004, when she first got behind the effort as a registered nurse who took care of patients with heart disease.

“I was well aware, as a registered nurse, of the impact heart disease can have on families,” she said.

But, it was also from her own family experience that Flynn knew how devastating heart disease can be, she said.

“My father had heart disease and so did my husband’s mother,” said Flynn.

Knowing heart disease ran in both their families, Flynn and her husband, Thomas M., were somewhat

prepared when Thomas was diagnosed with heart disease in 2006.

“It was still pretty frightening to hear the news,” she said.

What compounded matters for her husband, said Flynn, was that he had had a kidney transplant years before and needed a heart valve replacement due to complications with hypertension.

“It was frightening that he

needed to have open heart surgery done and to have a mechanical valve inserted,” she said. “For a kidney transplant patient to have to undergo open heart surgery, they’re already at risk. It places the transplant in jeopardy as well as other complications. It caused a lot of anxiety.”

However, her husband’s surgery went off without a hitch, said Flynn, and ever since he’s proudly been a participant in the Heart Walk alongside his wife as a “Red Cap Survivor”— someone who participates that is a survivor of heart disease or stroke.

“We’re proud to be a part of [the Heart Walk],” said Flynn, noting the event raises thousands of dollars each year for the American Heart Association. “Heart disease really impacts just about every family. It could be a child born with a heart dis-

ease. It could be siblings. It could be parents. It could be spouses. It could be friends.

It could be neighbors. Heart disease affects millions of people.”

“This is a great cause and a fun event for families and the community,” added.

Katherine McCarthy, senior regional director for communications with the American Heart Association office in Albany, agreed.

“The money raised locally impacts research for cures for heart disease and treatments for heart disease and education,” said McCarthy.

“And, now, more than ever,

these are hard times for everyone, but we don’t want to slide back. We want to keep funding this research and spreading our message.”

This year ’s goal is to raise $165,000. It’s one McCarthy is confident can be met and in the simplest of ways — walking.

“It’s a great excuse to go for a nice walk ... and it can also be a step toward prevention,”she said. “It’s never too early to start preventing cardiovascular diseases.”

This year ’s Plattsburgh Start! Heart Walk will be

held at the PARC Oval next Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning with registration in the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Center at 8:30 a.m. The walk — which has options for one- and three-mile courses — will follow at 10 a.m.

Health screenings, information about heart disease and stroke and a memorial dove release will round out the morning, along with family-friendly entertainment and demonstrations.

Comedy troupe sharing the gift of improv Completely Stranded to give classes next week

By Anayely Garcia Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — Completely Stranded’s main mission has always been to make people laugh. Now they’re helping others do the same.

The improv comedy troupe will be headlining improv classes starting Tuesday, Sept.

21, with members Merritt Billiter and Jason Borrie teaching the classes.

“Jason and I had thought about doing it about three or four years ago,” said Billiter,

an original member of the group. “We had a lot of people at the end of the school semester last year that were interested in joining at that point, so we thought maybe some of those people would be interested in taking the classes.”

The classes will be held every Tuesday for 10 weeks at Oliver Ridley’s, 37 Court St. “The first class will be at 7:30 p.m. and then we will try and decide what works best with the students,” said Billiter. “Olive Ridley’s was gracious enough to lend us their services to hold the classes there.”

The classes will culminate into a special performance with the graduating class, sometime in December.

Although there is a $75 fee per student, Billiter emphasized the importance of having such a skill.

“Some people think they can’t learn improv, and maybe they can’t, but if you’re comfortable enough to be on stage then that’s an ability you can use in a lot of different areas.”

There is a minimum age requirement of 18, but other than that, Billiter said all ages are encouraged to attend.

“Anyone in their 30s, 40s, and 50s is welcomed to come,” he explained. “You’re not too old to come join us.”

The improv classes will be taught in a “Whose Line is it Anyway?” type of style, without grueling in-depth 10minute long improv tests.

There is no limit of how many people can sign up and people are welcome to just drop by on the first day of classes.

“The more the merrier. We don’t know how many people we’ll end up getting,” Billiter

said. “If we only have three or four that’s fine, if we end up with 10 or 12, then that would be awesome!”

Palmer Street Coffeehouse kicks off 23rd season PLATTSBURGH — Blues fingerstyle guitarist Joan Crane and bassist Steve Feinbloom will kick off the 23rd season at the Palmer Street Coffeehouse Friday, Oct. 1.

The award, first issued in 1986, recognizes voluntary, long-term contributions to mental health, mental retardation and developmental disabilities or alcoholism and substance abuse services in Clinton County.

The award memorializes the efforts of Lillian B. Redcay, a State University of New York at Plattsburgh professor who was in the forefront of developing mental health services in Clinton County. Mary Krakowski was the 2009 recipient for her volunteer efforts to improve mental health above and beyond her duties at CVPH Medical Center.

Nomination forms are available from the Clinton County Community Services Board located at 16 Ampersand Drive. The deadline for submitting nominations is Wednesday, Sept. 30, with the award being presented later in the fall.

Sailing course will Understanding the process of buying local begin this Monday

PLATTSBURGH — More and more, people are beginning to buy their foods locally. Now people can actually visit the places where their local food comes from.

John Pelletier, an employee with the North Country Food Co-op, held his first field trip in May to Elfs Farm Winery and Cider Mill, getting the chance to see just how wine and cider is made.

“I think we had about six folks and we had about two extra people that just happened to stop by at the same time and they wanted to go,” recalled Pelletier.

While Pelletier was away during the summer months, now that he’s back in the area for college, he’s working to continue the field trips.

PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, the world’s largest boating safety education organization, is offering “Sail 2009,” an eight week course in the science and techniques of sailing beginning Monday, Sept. 20. The course, which will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Monday evening, will be held at the Lodge at Gander Mountain Sports in the Champlain Center Mall.

The course is a complete sail course, beginning with basic boat designs, rigging, and the science of sailing for the beginning sailor. The course then proceeds onto the physical aspects of sailing, steering and helmsmanship, handling of more difficult sailing conditions, sailing safety, navigation rules,and heavy weather sailing.

Also included are tuning the rig, spinnaker handling, docking and anchoring and marlinespike seamanship. The course will be taught by Michael Stephenson, past commander of the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, who has had extensive sailing experience.

Although all U.S. Power Squadron instructors are volunteers and are not paid for teaching there is a charge of $55 for books and materials. To enroll in the course or for further information, call Dave Robertson, education officer of the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron at 643-9262.

“There’s so many opportunities as you start going west toward Potsdam [to visit various farms],” he said. “In Vermont, you have so many different options.

“I don’t know how many of them have been to, or know of, what an active dairy farm is or what a winery looks like,” he added. “[It’s] just something to bring them closer to where their food is.”

Pelletier feels that if people are already shopping at the co-op, then they’re definitely on the right path to buying locally, but the field trips will get them even more involved with their food.

“If you’re interested, you can learn a little bit more about how your food is taken care of, you can see the facilities and know that you’re getting a good quality product from farmers that really care,” he explained.

“We have a lot of people that shop at the co-op,” said Pelletier. “We’ve had a huge jump in the number of people who shop here. A lot more memberships. So we really do work on getting the local products. It’s just something else that I thought might be interest-

Clubs bringing out the snowmobiles a little early next Saturday

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — To raise money to keep the local snowmobile trails kept up during the winter, the snowmobiles are coming out in the fall.

Next Saturday, Sept. 25, the fourth annual Grass Drags, Vintage Show and Swap Meet will be held by the five snowmobile clubs in Clinton County – Saranac’s Mountain Lions Snowmobile Club, Ellenburg Center ’s Northern Adirondack Trailbreakers Snowmobile Club, West Chazy’s Northern Tier Sno-runners,

Plattsburgh’s Trailgroomers Snowmobile Club, and Peru’s Trail Finders Snowmobile Club.

“All snowmobile trails are funded through registration of snowmobiler ’s sleds. All money is really coming from the snowmobilers themselves,” explained Peru’s club president Mike Relation. “It is not tax money.”

The show will be held at Airborne Speedway on Broderick Road, with gates opening at 9 a.m., registration held from 9 to 11 a.m., and races beginning at 12 p.m. sharp.

Relation explained there are different classes of snowmobiles, and

snowmobilers are paired against one another depending on their class.

“It depends on the size of the snowmobiles, size of the motor, and whether you have studs in your track, you don’t have studs in your track,” he said. “They’ve got a regular technical crew that sort the sleds out so that you don’t run your 1,000cc sled against a 200cc sled.

“You pay your fee, you come up to the line … the light changes, and you put the pedal to the metal and away you go across the field,” Relation added.

The day also includes the vintage

show, which typically brings in 30 to 40 sleds every year, although Relation hopes more will take interest in it. The registration price for the show is $5 per sled, with a maximum fee of $20.

Spectators can also take part in the swap meet, which brought out Della and Roberts Sport Center with new sleds last year.

If you have any sled parts or related parts that you want to sell, or old sleds that you want to sell, bring them,” said Miner.

Overall, Miner is just hoping people will come out and support the

snowmobile clubs of Clinton County.

“We’re trying, that’s about all we can do,” he said. “We’d like more people, we’d like more participation.”

“Support your local club,” Miner added. “Come out, have a good time.

You can’t have something if you don’t support it.”

Admission to the event is $5, and children younger than age 12 are admitted free.

Laperle takes home win at Airborne Speedway’s Fall Foliage 300 race S O U T H P L AT T S B U R G H — Patrick Laperle of St. Denis Quebec took the lead at Airborne Speedway last Saturday on a restart with 15 laps remaining in the 39th Mohawk Casino Fall Foliage 300. Laperle went on to win the event for the second year in a row.

Laperle earned $4,000 by shooting underneath leaders Brian Hoar and Eric Williams as they brushed into one another at the drop of the green.

Joey Polewarczyk, who raced alongside Hoar for second for more

than 20 laps, finished third. Brad Leighton and Williams completed the top five.

The long-distance race made pit strategy a key factor. Canadian Donald Theetge led many laps in the middle of the race, but eventually spun out of contention after being overtaken by cars with fresher tires. Laperle pitted midway in the race with a tire going down, lost a lap and then got back on the lead lap on lap 196.

Hoar and Polewarczyk pitted for tires on lap 218.

Positions 6-10 went to Randy Potter, Scott Payea, Brent Dragon, Craig Bushey and Joe Becker.

The Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified Apple Bowl 100 came down to the final lap. Vince Quenneville of Brandon, Vt., was first to the finish line by four feet, but the results remain unofficial pending further technical inspection. Outdoor concert to keep the music alive

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — After the success of the concert on Bridge Street during the Mayor ’s Cup festivities, The Green Room owner Chris Dumont, has decided to keep events going downtown.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, The Green Room will sponsor an outdoor concert on Upper Bridge Street featuring the Long Islandbased band Cloud 9, Albany-based band Stuck on Stupid, and DJ Strongrm of Burlington, Vt. “The college kids really love Cloud 9,” said Dumont. “Stuck on Stupid is liked by the locals, so I figured I would get a little bit of everything for everyone.”

The event, which will take place from 5 to 9 p.m., is designed with families in mind.

“This is for everyone,” Dumont said. “The only place you can consume alcohol is inside the bar or in our designated area outside. Pepsi’s going to be walking around.

We’re going to get some Redbull samples.

Monster Energy Drink is going to hand out some samples.”’

“It’s more for the families and kids to come out and enjoy themselves,” he added.

Dumont had hoped to bring to Plattsburgh when he opened the bar.

“When I was in high school, they actually used to do a show on Upper Bridge Street and the people really enjoyed it,” he recalled. “It walked off the beaten path of the

traditional Mayor ’s Cup. We brought it back and we had about 500, 600 people show up in the street. It was pretty impressive.”

Concerts such as this are something Dumont thinks needs to continue, as it brings more people downtown, benefitting all the local businesses.

“It’s just another event added to what should be what I consider a series that goes on throughout the entire summer,” Dumong explained. “Use downtown. Get people to come out. Get people to sit and watch and enjoy and boost business downtown for everybody.”

“I’m trying to just lead by example and hope that next year I’m not the only one paying for this and everybody jumps on board, because they’ll realize that they’re all making money on it,” he added.

The concert is being put on with help from the city of Plattsburgh mayor Donald M. Kasprzak as well as the council members.

“The mayor was a great help and my hat goes off to him because … they’re going to pay for the tent, put up the stage,” Dumont explained. “[Kasprzak] really pushed for it … Without his support it wouldn’t happen.”

S

ome might call what the Rev Tor Band offers a religious experience.

The band, which hails from The Berkshires in western Massachusetts, formed in 1996 after Krautter had recorded a CD of original music and found himself needing a band to perform at the release party.

“So, we put the line up together,” said Krautter.

Krautter brought together bassist and vocalist Dan Broad, keyboardist and vocalist Scott Gu-

berman and drummer Andy Crawford. And, with that, the Rev Tor Band was formed.

As for the band’s name, Krautter said it came about in a rather comical way.

“Around the same time, a friend had me ordained with the Universal Life Church, sort of as a joke,” explained Krautter. “I got a card in the mail saying I was now a minister. I showed it to a few people and everyone started a calling me Rev Tor.” The name stuck and Krautter and his band began playing their mix of “funky, bass-oriented rhythms and foot stomping percussion” across the country. Rev Tor Band comes to the Monopole their nearly 15 years of existence, the band has become well-known on the East Coast club and festival circuit, performing in venues from Maine to Florida, with a stop or two in Plattsburgh along the way.

“The first time was probably six or seven years ago at the Monopole,” recalled Krautter, who added the band has also played the annual Backwoods Pondfest in Peru. “We love Plattsburgh and the people. We always have so

much fun.”

The Rev Tor Band is currently working on recording a live DVD to celebrate the band’s upcoming 15th anniversary. Already, the band has released six albums under its label Smellydog Records, showcasing their music style that has collective influences of everything from the Grateful Dead to Bob Marley to even Beethoven.

“We’re definitely a jam band but we try and explore as many musi-

cal paths as we can,” said Krautter. “We just play the music that we love and makes us feel good.

Thankfully, there are some really cool like-minded people out there that enjoy what we do.”
