By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When Deb Conners was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer in March, it was news that came out of nowhere for her and her family.

“It was a pretty huge shock,” said Conners’ daughter, Danielle. “I mean, you never really expect it to happen to your family.

You hear about it and you always try to help others with [cancer] but it never really hits you until it hits home.”

Since her diagnosis, Conners has undergone radiation and chemotherapy, had her gallbladder removed and had several other procedures to eliminate the cancer within her, said Danielle.

“The doctor said he’s optimistic,” said Danielle. “Her chances are looking good.”

Danielle attributes that to her mother ’s upbeat attitude and the support she’s received from family and friends in the past six months.

“She tries to stay pretty positive. She definitely has a lot of faith,” said Danielle.

“She’s got a lot of positive people around her, so that helps out a lot.”

come together this Saturday, Sept. 11, for “A Day for Deb,” an event at American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh dedicated to her mother. The purpose of the event is to help raise money for Conners, who has endured many expenses associated with her treatment, said Danielle.

“It’s pretty costly and my mother hasn’t been able to work since her diagnosis,” she said, noting her mother had been an employee at Condo’s Pharmacy for 25 years.

“The funds have been pretty slim.”

This Saturday’s event aims to help the Conners family alleviate that, if only a little, said Danielle. The day, which kicks off at 12 p.m., will consist of a spaghetti dinner, bake sale, horse rides, face painting, auctions, raffles and live entertainment. Horseshoe and co-ed softball tournaments will help round out the day.

Condo’s Pharmacy is also selling “A Day for Deb” bracelets at their Montcalm Avenue location before and after the event, with proceeds to help Conners.

Hannah’s Hope awarded $250,000 grant Organization will continue to raise money for research

The nonprofit organization — whose mission is to eradicate giant axonal neuropathy (GAN), an inherited neurological disorder — has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. The highly-competitive grant is available on a monthly basis to qualifying organizations and is one Lori Sames, executive director of Hannah’s Hope Fund, wasn’t sure her organization would get.

“It’s quite a miracle when you consider the other organizations we were up against and the huge following they had,” said Sames, whose organization is named for her daughter, Hannah, who has the rare disorder.

“It was insanity,” said Sames.

That night, Hannah’s Hope Fund had slipped to number three. Considering only the top two projects in their category would receive funding, calls went out across the country to get people to place last-minute votes.

“Everyone immediately started calling their West Coast contacts trying to rally and get more people to vote,” said Sames. “It was a full-court press.”

When Sames and her husband, Matt, a Plattsburgh native, went to bed that night, the outcome of the competition was unclear.

The next day, however, Sames said she

woke to see the word “finalist” on the Hannah’s Hope Fund page for Pepsi Refresh Everything, later learning the organization had ranked number two in the end.

“When we went to sleep, the last thing I said to my husband was that you never know what tomorrow brings,” she said. “I had this feeling in my gut that we would have good news in the morning.”

“It was a miracle indicative of the miracle we’re going to pull off for these kids,” Sames added.

Hannah’s Hope Fund will now put the Pepsi Refresh Everything money toward clinical human trials of gene therapy to correct GAN. The overall cost of the trials is estimated at $1.3 million.

“We thank the North Country from the bottom of our hearts,” said Sames. “The help of the entire North Country, the entire Capital District, everyone, is what made this happen.”

egory for the Pepsi grant since Aug. 1, and was holding steady in the double-digit rankings until the second week of August. The organization began to rapidly move up the list, resting in the number four position until breaking into the top three in the final days of the month.

Sames attributes that to the hard push of Hannah’s Hope Fund supporters in their eleventh hour.

“We had been going full-speed for the last two weeks,” said the Beekmantown native. “It was nonstop, even going up to a complete stranger on their cell phone and asking if they’d send a text message vote for Hannah’s Hope Fund.”

In the final days of the competition, it was a tight three-way race between Hannah’s Hope Fund and CureJM, another nonprofit trying to raise awareness of juvenile myositis, and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, a nonprofit looking for a cure to a rare neurodevelopmental disorder.

On Aug. 31, Sames and Hannah’s Hope Fund supporters invaded busy intersections in the Capital District handing out voting instructions and asking people to vote before the midnight deadline.

PLATTSBURGH — Snowball the bunny is missing.

The Juneau family held a garage sale at their LaBarre Street home Aug. 28 and that was the last day they saw what had been an important stuffed animal companion to 6-year-old Adam Juneau.

Debbie Juneau, Adam’s mother, said her son had been showing Snowball to some children visiting the garage sale and had inadvertently left her on the checkout table. Debbie believes Snowball was accidentally bagged up with a customer ’s purchase and may well be still in a bag sitting in someone’s vehicle or home.

“Needless to say, my son is completely heartbroken,” said Debbie. “And, to an ordinary person, Snowball would mean nothing. But, to Adam, she’s the world.”

Spotting Snowball shouldn’t be difficult because she’s not your average looking stuffed bunny, said Debbie. The white rabbit is draped in beads made in Adam's kindergarten class on the 100th day of school last year, wrapped around her ears like a ponytail. She was also wearing a bead necklace made with an "A" on it around her neck and a navy blue "Mr. Mischievous" T-shirt with a yellow smi-

ley face on that was Adam's as a baby.

“She’s a unique looking bunny,” Debbie said, laughing for a moment before turning more emotional. “So, there were some meaningful things that were on her that can’t be replaced.”

Upon hearing of Adam’s loss, a woman and her three sons stopped by the Juneau home with a special surprise for Adam — another stuffed bunny named Buttercup.

Though Buttercup can’t replace Snowball, Debbie said her son was very appreciative for his new friend when he found it waiting for him at home after soccer practice.

“I was so touched that complete strangers would do such a thing,” said Debbie. “It was so thoughtful of them.”

However, in the meantime, the Juneaus are still searching for Snowball.

When asked if there was something he specifically wanted to say to whomever may have Snowball, Adam’s response was simple and to the point.

“I need Snowball home so we can play some games ... Snowball is very special.

Please bring her back,” he said. “When Snowball comes home, mommy, daddy, Snowball and I are going to have a big hug.”

North Country native featured on NBC’s The Today Show

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com POMONA, N.J. — Dr. Joshua Duntley has gained national recognition for his work with youths in the field of crime scene investigation.

Duntley, a graduate of Saranac Central School and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, was recently featured in an article by the Wall Street Journal and a television interview on NBC’s The Today Show for his work as co-director of a CSI summer camp held at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Speaking as an assistant professor in the criminal justice program and associated faculty in the psychology program, Duntley was first interviewed for an Aug. 3 piece in the Wall Street Journal written by reporter Nathan Koppel. Koppel was wanting to write a story on “unusual summer camps,” said Duntley, and after searching the Internet, came across his the college’s CSI camp.

“He chose to interview us because we had the best Web site,” explained Duntley. “He also flew to Austin, Tx., to learn about an entrepreneurship camp that they run. The story ended

up focusing primarily on our CSI camp.”

The Stockton camp immersed high-schools in realistic mock-murder scenes to process evidence like bloody footprints and potential murder weapons. The Wall Street Journal story and the camp were so intriguing, Duntley was contacted by The Today Show producers the day after the article was printed.

“The producer from The Today Show who contacted me passed along my contact information to another producer, and enlisted the help of Amy Robach, who hosts the weekend Today Show, to conduct the interview,” said Duntley. “Amy was a very nice person. But then, all of the people with whom I interacted at The Today Show were quite nice.”

Producer Jennie Thompson joined Robach and a film crew at the camp, spending the better part of a day observing and talking with the campers and camp staff, said Duntley. The attention was something Duntley said greatly helped the camp and the college.

“Our camp Web site had something in the neighborhood of 30 unique hits on the day before the story aired on The Today Show,” said

Duntley. “On the day the story aired, the camp Web site received over 800 hits.”

In the days following the story, the college continued to receive a much higher level of Web traffic, he added.

“The college’s former Dean of graduate studies told me that The Today Show story about our CSI camp is the best national exposure the college has ever received,” said Duntley.

The exposure wasn’t just helpful for the program and the college, said Duntley. It was also helpful with fostering an interest in forensics and the criminal justice system in general, he said.

“The Today Show story helped to spread the word about our camp and perhaps encouraged interested students to begin pursuing their interests in CSI topics even before entering college,” said Duntley. “I think that our CSI camp offers an opportunity for high school students to explore interests that they have had for some time.”

Vassar, who has performed throughout the area, said he’s proud to be part of the event, knowing proceeds will go to “a good cause.”

“It makes me feel real good and I know it makes Bill feel good,” said Vassar. “There’s a lot of people out there in need. It’s sad that we have to have benefits like this, but we do this to let people know we care.”

The cause, said Clukey, is one he believes in because of the need he hears about in the community.

“We timed it for September because of the holidays that are coming up like Thanksgiving and Christmas,” he said. “We’re hoping to raise a nice chunk of money.”

This Sunday’s event will start at 12 p.m. and include performances by comedians, ventriloquists, magicians, clowns and puppeteers. The day will also include woodcarving demonstrations, raffle drawings and more.

The cost of admission has been reduced from $25 for an all-day pass to $10 in an effort to bring more people through the doors this Sunday, said Clukey.

“We would love to be able to give their food shelf a nice big check,” he said. “And, if people want to bring in nonperishable items for the food shelf, we’ll collect those, too.”

The Lying Down Game offers a vertical challenge

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — For anyone who may have been golfing at Bluff Point Golf Resort Aug. 18, you would probably have seen a game in full swing — but not one commonly seen on the course.

Eighteen-year-old Russell Izzo of Plattsburgh is a member of the local group of people who participate in the Lying Down Game, known as Team America.

“The Lying Down Game is actually a game where you lie down on the ground and ... the official rules on-line are that you have to include as many people as possible and it has to be as public as possible, with as many people standing around as possible,” Izzo explained.

The LDG is the brainchild of two men from the United Kingdom who began the Web site www.lyingdownga¡ the tips of your toes pointed toward the ground.

Izzo, who learned of the game from a friend from Canada, said the local group has only been around for a matter of weeks and now is in friendly competition with the Canadian group, known as Team Canada.

The two teams now compete against one another to see who can capture the best photo.

Although Izzo said his group can often be seen throughout the week in places such as downtown Plattsburgh, their biggest challenge to date was at Bluff Point, with a large group of people lying down on the greens and on golf carts.

The group of people it brings out is Izzo’s favorite part of the game.

“It doesn’t sound fun, but you actually get a rush out of it.

Izzo said although it’s fun to see where they can get the most people, the game is still fun when there is a small group.

“If there aren’t a lot of people with us, we can just be anywhere,” he said. “On top of mailboxes, on statues.”

Scrabble competition to benefit Literacy Volunteers

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County is playing games.

To help raise money for the volunteer organization, LV-CC will host “Scrabble for Literacy” Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

According to LV-CC VISTA volunteer Arthur Menard, the idea originated with his wife, LV-CC director Norma Menard, who is a big fan of the word game.

“Also, we know that Literacy Volunteers of Essex and Franklin Counties have done this in the past,” Menard explained. “So, we’re kind of following in their footsteps as well.”

One difference LV-CC will have in comparison to LV-Essex/Franklin is they are partnering with two local libraries to promote the event.

The event will be held at the Plattsburgh Public Library, 19 Oak St., and Dodge Memorial Library, 144 Lake St. in Rouses Point.

The Scrabble competition, is one Menard said will hopefully bring in much needed donations. “[The donations] would be going towards the general support of our program,” he explained. “I’m picturing [them going towards] materials for training and materials for students.”

Menard said many people may not realize exactly what LV-CC does, and who they help.

“We are a tutoring organization where we tutor one-on-one with adults who want to learn to read better,” he said. “Out of roughly 66,000 adults in Clinton County, roughly 8,000 either read or speak at a very low level.”

The organization also serves immigrants in the county, with 39 countries represented last year.

“We bring them up to where they can function on the street, in the store,” said Menard. “We do help them to be able to know what to say to a doctor. We help them with money, checking. A lot of things.”

To help continue the program, the Scrabble competition registration is a $20 tax-deductible donation. They will also accept donations from people who do not want to

play, but want to donate.

The competition will pair players of similar abilities, and depending on the amount of players at each location, will have two to four players in a game.

Prizes will be given to players who score 50 points or more on a single play, and special prizes will be given to the first and second place finishers.

NOTICE OF 2010 LAKE CHAMPLAIN SEA LAMPREY CONTROL TREATMENT SCHEDULE AND TEMPORARY WATER USE ADVISORIES The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announces that sea lamprey control treatments will continue this September in four tributaries of Lake Champlain.

The sea lamprey is a parasitic fish that has seriously damaged the trout and salmon fishery in the lake. Crews will apply TFM to four streams according to the following tentative schedule: Date Stream September 14 Putnam Creek September 18 Little Ausable September 22 Ausable River Temporary water use advisories will be in effect in specific areas following each treatment. The purpose of the advisories, developed by the Department of Health, is to minimize exposure to the sea lamprey treatment compound.

The Department of Health recommends that river water, which may contain treatment concentrations of TFM, should not be used for drinking, swimming, fishing, irrigating, or livestock watering until the control chemical dissipates. Nearby lake water, which may contain dilute concentrations of TFM, should not be used for drinking or livestock watering until the advisory is lifted.

The treatment and water use advisories will have no effect on most people in the Champlain Basin and no municipal water supplies will be affected. An extensive series of mailings has already been initiated by department staff to contact landowners and renters who may be affected by the treatments. Local broadcast media will announce when advisories begin and end. There is also a toll free number (800-638-5432) the public may call from any location in NY or Vermont for progress reports and updates on treatments and water use advisories.

Community invited to meet their neighbors this Wednesday night Event will bring together college students and local residents

The organization — consisting of students and staff from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and city officials — will host “Meet the Neighbors” Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 5-7 p.m. The continued focus of the social event, now in its fifth year, is to form a stronger relationship between the students who live in the city seasonally and those who live here year-round.

Tiffany Probst, with the university’s office for Fraternity/Sorority Life, said the

event has become an important part of the settling in process for many students, many of whom come from great distances to attend school here.

“By having events like this, you get to know the neighbors around you,” said Probst.”It creates a better atmosphere and makes you feel more comfortable and actually like a part of the Plattsburgh community instead of a student or resident who’s only there for six months and leaves.”

“It also gives people a better perspective of fraternities and sororities,” she continued. “It shows that we’re just like everyone else and we want to have good relations with local organizations and residents.”

Meet the Neighbors will be held at several locations next Wednesday — 169 Cornelia St., 122 Court St., 48 Broad St., and 62-64 Couch St. — all from 5-7 p.m. The free event will be catered by Chartwells and is sponsored by the Plattsburgh Campus/City Coalition, the Campus/Community Partnership, SUNY Plattsburgh College Auxiliary Services, Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Phi, Pi Alpha Nu, Sigma Tau Gamma, and the office for Fraternity/Sorority Life.

Exhibits opening Friday night PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, 23 Brinkerhoff St., will host a double opening reception Friday, Sept. 10, from 5-7 p.m.

“Granite and Greens” an exhibition by Elizabeth Grades, and the 2010 Regional Juried Exhibition will both open that evening.

Elizabeth Grades, a local artist born in Michigan, came to Plattsburgh to receive her bachelor ’s degree in fine arts from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 2006. Since her graduation, Elizabeth has been an active artist, showing her work in

multiple venues in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

The regional exhibition features a wide range of entries from local artists from painting to ceramics to fabric art. Local judges this year will be Jackie Sabourin and Gail Kemp.

The reception and gallery are open to the public and all are welcome at the opening reception.

Donations needed for local not-for-profit The St. John Feral Cat Fund Inc. has been sterilizing feral (wild), stray and abandoned cats since July 2002.

Our organization has spayed/neutered over 2,200 cats and adopted out over 900 cats and kittens.

We have also provided food and shelter for the last 8 years for more than 30 outdoor cat colonies as well as helped local residents learn about Trap-Neuter-Return.

Hundreds of individuals have rescued cats on their own after contacting our organization. We provide education to the public and have heard many successful stories and are very proud of what we have accomplished over the years in such a small community.

We are run entirely by volunteers and do not have paid staff.

We handle close to 200 cats annually which include surrenders that shelters can not take, rescues and emergency situat ions that we come across.

We adopt out cats and kittens through our adoption program. We joined Petsmart Charities in 2005 and found homes for hundreds of cats and kittens.

Over the last two years, and the economy not helping matters, our organization has been struggling to raise funds and meet our goals to help the cats that are in need.

We depend 100 percent on public donations to continue this work — saving lives, one cat at a time!

Contributions go toward Trap-Neuter-Return, vet expenses, foster care, emergency care, cat food, litter and operational costs.

PLATTSBURGH — The Diabetes Education Center at CVPH Medical Center will offer a 4-week session of the Diabetes Self Management Education program beginning Monday, Sept. 13.

Smith also recommended that parents and guardians “pre-walk” their youngsters to and from school along a predetermined route before sending them out alone. Children should be taught to use only the established route, and to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing in bad weather for maximum visibility and safety.

The New York State Police reminded motorists state law requires all vehicles to stop when meeting or overtaking school buses stopped, with red lights flashing, and to pick up or discharge passengers. Failure to obey this law is a dangerous violation that could result the loss of a young person’s life and a minimum fine of $250.

jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The words “early” and “morning” and the local music scene have never really meshed well. That is, until four guys came together to form a band in 2008.

The band Early Morning has been playing the local music scene for the past two years, with roots that are intertwined with a series of random events. When looking to form a band, bassist Josh Brown connected with drummer Brent Cross through MySpace. The two were then connected with rhythm guitarist and vocalist Brandon Frenyea through a random e-mail.

When Brown dislocated his thumb on a camping trip, Tony Walker stepped in to fill the lead guitar slot.

When Brown returned, Early Morning was officially formed.

Their sound is one Brown says he “can’t describe,” but is most closely labeled as rock.

“The range of bands we listen to are endless,” said Brown. “Bran-

don goes from country all the way to metal, but his big influence is Brand New, Thrice and Thursday.

Tony has the darker melodic side to him ranging from Deftones to Stone Temple Pilots. Brent is influenced by Receiving End of Sirens, Emmure, and Everytime I Die. [I’m] influenced by Blink 182, Four Year Strong and anything else that catches [my] ear.”

Early Morning’s first show was in Saranac Lake on Halloween 2008, with gigs in Albany and Potsdam to follow. It wasn’t until December that year the band had its first show in their native Plattsburgh. Since then, the band has played multiple venues in New York and Vermont.

“Our goal is to get a larger fan base in the greater New England area before we hop in a van and start touring the east coast,” said Brown. “You can book shows all over, but if you do not have a fan base it is hard to go anyplace.”

What’s attracted people to Early Morning has been their sound, and mainly because the band writes a lot of their own songs, said Brown.

and some people tell us we sound like this band or that band, but we just write what sounds good to us,” he said. “We write a song and tear it apart; it is a group effort and when a song is done we are proud of it.”

“Creating something totally different is not easy these days,” Brown added, “but we feel the key is to make a song that makes you want to listen to it again and again.”

Rotarians gearing up for Roducky Derby Saturday PLATTSBURGH — Hundreds of yellow rubber ducks will hit the water as the Plattsburgh Rotary Club hosts its annual Roducky Derby, Saturday, Sept. 11.

The ducks will be released immediately following the Beat Retreat performance at the annual Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration, at approximately 3 p.m. Ducks will travel down a manmade river along the sidewalk near Macdonough Monument leading to the Saranac River on City Hall Place.

“These aren’t ordinary rubber ducks,” said Roducky Derby chairperson Ellen Bouchard.

“These are racing ducks that have been training and preparing for months to go out and raise money for local nonprofits.”

Each duck will race to the finish line in an effort to win a prize for the person who adopted it. Ducks that make it first into the duck trap win great prizes donated by local businesses for their lucky adopters.

WPTZ Newschannel 5 and the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh are providing this year ’s grand prize — four tickets to the Jimmy Fallon show in New York City, including transportation and lodging.

In addition to the trip to Jimmy Fallon, other race prizes include a 32-inch Vizio flat screen television, an onyx and mother of pearl silver necklace courtesy of Kneucraft Jewelers, a $100 U.S. savings bond from NBT Bank, a children’s birthday party at Fred Villari’s Studios valued at $200, among other prizes.

The Roducky Derby, now in its 12th year, raises money for the club so it may help many charitable organizations in the North Country. The event is part of Rotary “Race Day” which will include the inaugural running of the Rotary Bed Race.

Individuals can adopt rubber ducks for a $5 donation. Packages of multiple ducks are available at discounted prices.

Ducks will be on sale across from City Hall, in front of Macdonough Monument the day of the event.

‘Girls Night Out’ returns Oct. 12 Annual event held in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month PLATTSBURGH — Girls Night Out, the Foundation of CVPH’s annual recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will be held in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh’s Hawkins Hall on Beekman Street Tuesday, Oct. 12. Showtimes will be 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Anne Cahill, cardiothoracic surgeon, will offer “Your Heart, Your Life,” a presentation about the importance of heart health. Cahill practices at Champlain Valley Cardiothoracic Surgeons and is the newest member of the Champlain Valley Heart Center. The Boobie Sisters, Plattsburgh’s beloved and irreverent troupe of performing breast cancer survivors will perform and featured this year is comedian Mrs. Hughes who will present, “The Skewed Views of Mrs. Hughes.” Hughes appears regularly in Las Vegas and offers some hilarious observations on being woman, wife, mother and grandmother. She proves that laughter is indeed the best medicine.

The 2010 Boobie Prize Winner will be announced at the 7:30 p.m. show and will honor a community member who has a made a significant impact on the fight against breast cancer in this community.

WPTZ News Channel 5’s Stephanie Gorin will be the night’s emcee.

Tickets are available at General Trading Company, Koffee Kat, Champlain Centre, SUNY Plattsburgh Angell College Center, and on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Patient Information Desk in the CVPH Medical Center lobby. Tickets are also available on-line at www.cvph.org. The cost is $15.

Ticket holders will receive a 10 percent discount Oct. 12 at the following restaurants: Anthony’s Restaurant & Bistro, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar, Arnie’s Restaurant, Butcher Block, Geoffrey’s Pub & Restaurant, Ground Round, Irises Cafe & Wine Bar, Koto Japanese Steak House, Mangia Wood Fired Pizza & Pasta, Michele’s Fine Dining, Olive Ridley’s, Panera Bread and Smoked Pepper.
