Kevin Frey — who owns the business with his br other, Sean, and father , T om — said he was on his way home fr om a wedding last Saturday night when he was traveling toward the winery on State Route 9. “I hit a r oad block and was told the winery was on fire,” Frey recalled. Officials let Frey through
to the scene where he saw flames shooting throughout the building, decimating its second floor. “There was smoke pour ing everywhere,” Frey said, recalling how he approached the scene as crews from the Beekmantown, Chazy, City of Plattsbur gh, Cumberland Head and District No. 3 fire departments fought the fire.

BUFFALO — First Niagara Bank, N.A., a subsidiary of First Niagara Financial Group, Inc., signed an agreement July 30 to acquire 195 HSBC Bank branches in upstate New York and Connecticut, including several in the North Country. Branches targeted for sale include those in Saranac Lake, Plattsbur gh, Malone, Potsdam and Massena. The fate of these branches is unclear at this time, according to First Niagara officials, who expect to divest certain branches in selected locations that ar e outside the company’s strategic focus, pending the outcome of the customary antitr ust review.
