Legislators talk over increase in bed tax

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — The Clinton County Legislatur e is examining incr easing its occupancy tax. County Legislator Harry McManus, D-Area One, addressed the Champlain village board of trustees July 11, stating the North Country Chamber of Commer ce approached the legislatur e about incr easing the tax levied on those staying at hotels and motels in Clinton County fr om 3 per cent to 4 percent per night. “Many counties have that [percentage],” said McManus, “I’m just not sur e this is the time to raise any taxes. So, I’m undecided.” Since the county enacted its occupancy or “bed” tax in 2008, $958,418 has been generated for tourism pr omotion. The total bulk of the funds, with the exception of a 5 per cent administrative fee that goes to the county treasurer ’s of fice, goes directly to tourism promotion. This year alone, more than $450,000 of that figur e has been generated. McManus commended the chamber for pr omoting the area but said he remained on SEE TAX, CONTINUED ON P5

SARANAC LAKE — A popular and nationally renowned youth volunteering program is getting ready to make a triumphant return to northern New York. Officials with the National
Workforce Investment Board announced last week that AmeriCorps is returning to the North Country. The AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks program is being sponsored by a grant awarded by the New York State Office of National and Community Service.
