BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Central School district budget wasn’t as favorable to voters the second time around. The school district’s pr oposed $38,721,107 budget for the 2011-12 school year was put back before voters June 30 wher e it was defeated 1,335 to 843. The budget — which was initially approved May 17 by a vote of 746 to 730 — was ordered by the state education commissioner to be put up for a revote June 30 after it was found one of three voting machines used was not updated for the election, and displayed last year's figures to voters. District superintendent Scott A. Amo said he could do nothing but speculate as to why the budget wasn’t appr oved by voters a second time. See BUDGET, continued on page 2

The flag has been traveling thr oughout the United States as a way of honoring the victims of the Sept. 1 1, 2001 terr orist attacks and invigorating patriotism in the people it meets, with those in the
Northern Tier being no different. Hundreds of people turned out for a special ceremony July 1, held at the Rouses Point Volunteer Fire Department. Political dignitaries and local of ficials discussed the mission of The Patriot Flag and the importance of r emembering the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives a decade ago. Thomas A. Middleton, a National Guar d veteran and native of Chazy r esponsible for helping pr ocure the flag for the event, addressed the cr owd, underscoring the importance See FLAG, continued on page 8
