News Briefs Deputy county clerk resigns post PLATTSBURGH — Glenn Olds, deputy county clerk for Clinton County and supervisor of the local Department of Motor Vehicles, has resigned.

Olds’ r esignation last week r eportedly coincided with word investigators from the office of the state Inspector General wer e planning to seize his of fice computer and other documents related to his employment with the county.

Olds was employed with the local DMV for 17 years and formerly served as a councilman for the City of Plattsburgh Common Council from 2001-2003.

No official statement on the investigation into Olds’ files has be en m ade by the Inspector General’s office.

Local man charged with assault BEEKMANTOWN — W illiam A. Jabaut, 46, Plattsburgh, was arrested June 12 for allegedly assaulting his wife.

State police state Jabaut was char ged with first-degr ee criminal contempt with physical contact and thir d-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury.

Jabaut was arraigned in T own of Beekmantown Court. He was remanded to Clinton County Jail on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.

‘Summer shenanigans’ in store this Saturday Inaugural block party combines with both old and new events

PLATTSBURGH — The arts community is coming together to throw a good old-fashioned block party.

The first annual Summer Shenanigans Block Party will hit downtown Plattsburgh this Saturday, June 18, and it’s an event that or ganizers ar e getting excited about.

Matt Hall, one of the people working to pr omote the daylong event, said he’s been wanting to develop a new cultural festival for the city with a focus of bringing mor e people together.

“We have a lot of independent factions here in Plattsburgh doing a lot in the community,” said Hall. “This will showcase

them all at the same time and give them a platform to bring in new members.”

Organizations like the ROTA Studio and Gallery and the Crafty Geek Brigade will be among those looking for people to get involved in the local arts scene with many of their members displaying and selling their works.

And, though some will be selling their photographs, paintings and other cr eations, the event is fr ee to attend and free to participate in, said Hall.

“We’ve had people asking what this benefits, what the money goes towar d. And we tell them there’s no money, it’s not benefitting anything. This is just something for the community,” said Hall.

The block party will be set up along a cordoned off section of Brinkerhoff Str eet fr om Margaret to Oak str eets, in the downtown arts corridor. Family-oriented entertainment will begin at 10 a.m., featuring arts and crafts activities, face painting and mor e. ROT A Studio

and Gallery will host a “Really Really Fr ee Market” fr om 1 1 a.m. to 4 p.m., a community event wher e people come together and shar e their useable but no longer wanted items with other community members. Bands and musicians will perform fr om 1 to 9 p.m. and include Jaclyn Falk, Peter House, Gr eenbeans, Pyramid Pendulum, Lie Captive, and Shameless Strangers. Live painting and drawing demonstrations will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m.

Since no food will be sold at the event, or ganizers of the block party have worked with local r estaurants to have participating downtown establishments of fer discounts to those who pick up a special coupon at the block party. Businesses so far include Cheechako T aco, Kof fee Kat, Livingoods and Geof frey’s Pub. The block party will also pair with the annual Cupcake Showdown, hosted by the Crafty Geek Brigade at the

North Country Cultural Center for the Arts from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

That event, celebrating its third year , will again seek homemade cupcake entries that will vie for the titles of Best Decoration, Funniest, Best Use of Fr uit or Vegetable, Best Vegan, Best T aste, and the highly-coveted “Super Duper Best of the W est, High Noon Total Package Awesome Cupcake.”

The day will close with a fire dancing and stilting demonstration by Sugar Fire and Her Fire Arts Troupe at 9 p.m.

Leo Lee returns from Washington, D.C. bee

PLATTSBURGH — Leo Lee has returned.

The Seton Catholic Central School eighth-grader has arrived back in the North Country following his participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in W ashington, D.C., earlier this month. Lee almost made it to the semifinals of the competition which pitted him against hundreds of contestants fr om acr oss the nation.

The experience of traveling to Washington for his second chance at the national title is one Lee said he won’t forget.

“I was really excited to get to go to W ashington one more time, and I thought I could get into the semifinals this time,” said Lee, who competed in the 2009 national bee.

Though he came within one point of being included in the semifinals, the 13-yearold Lee said he was pleased

with his ability being ranked 42nd after making it through one w ritten r ound a nd t wo oral r ounds. The written round included words like “benediction,” “bonobo” and “Kafkaesque.” In the end, Lee misspelled the words “acetarious,” “pinealectomy” and “vitelline,” r esulting in his overall scor e of 28 in the preliminaries, just one point shy of him being able to advance to the semifinals.

“I was pr etty happy that I was included in the top 275 spellers fr om acr oss the globe,” said Lee, who shrugged off the loss. “I also made lots of new friends, and had fun.”

Lee credits the loss he suffered in the 2010 Champlain Valley E ducational S ervices Regional Spelling Bee for being his motivation to win this year ’s regional bee and study even har der for this year ’s national bee — the last year he is eligible to compete.

Man hospitalized after accident ALTONA — Russell W . Chignon, 72, Plattsburgh, was taken to the hospital after a two-car accident on Military Turnpike June 8.

State police reported Chignon was operating a vehicle when it collided with another driven

BEEKMANTOWN — Misty Ann Bashaw, 34, Morrisonville, was injur ed June 8 after r eportedly losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a ditch on Rand Hill Road.

State police r eported Bashaw was traveling southbound when her vehicle exited the south shoulder. She then r eportedly swerved back into the r oad though ultimately ended up in a ditch.

Bashaw was transported to CVPH Medical Center, Plattsbur gh. She was tr eated and r eleased.

Margaret Street reopened to traffic

PLATTSBURGH — The city of Plattsbur gh has removed a temporary pipeline to alleviate flooding on Margaret Street.

Flood water levels were said to have dropped enough to r emove the pipeline and r eopen the street to its four lanes of traf fic on the north end.

United Way offering help to flood victims in tri-county area

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region is doing its part for individuals and families af fected by the recent flooding that devastated the region.

The nonpr ofit or ganization has announced it is of fering mini-grants to help those who have been af fected by flooding specifically in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.

“We’re very pleased to be able to of fer this assistance for people who have unmet needs because the flooding this spring has been devastating for many families,” said United Way executive director John C. Bernardi. “And, it’s with-

in our mission to help people in times of need and times of crises.”

The disaster relief mini-grants — made possible by a partnership between the United Way of New York State and the Civil Service Employees Association — are primarily being made available to CSEA members and uninsur ed households. The amount of funding available is limited, noted Bernardi, who emphasized it is important for flood victims to “exhaust all available r esources befor e applying for monies.”

“The main thing is that they have to be unmet needs that are flood-related,” said Bernardi. “It’s for issues that are not covered by other sources. We want to provide this safety net for people who don’t have other resources available.”

According to information pr ovided by the United W ay, mini-grants may be used for cleaning supplies, food and food supplies, mold eradication and other minor r epairs, rental or home mortgage expenses, transportation assistance or car r epair, utility assistance and appliances, and other flood related expenses.

Applications for funding are available at the United Way of the Adirondack Region, 45 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901. Applications must be submitted by Monday , June 27.

Potential closure of Schuyler Falls Post Office stirs residents

Special to Denton Publications SCHUYLER FALLS — Residents ar e fighting to keep the Schuyler Falls Post Office open.

Post Of fice Operations Manager Dan Cr onin and Manager of Consumer Affairs Dave Duroucher, both with the U.S. Postal Service’s Albany District, met with members of the community June 8 at an open forum held at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 309 in Peru. The forum was an opportunity for Cr onin and Dur ocher to explain that a study of the possible discontinuance of services thr ough the Schuyler Falls Post Office was taking place.

“I don’t believe anybody is here tonight to tell us that it’s a good thing to consider closing the Schuyler Falls Post Office,” said Cronin. “I’d be very shocked if there’s one person here that’s going to tell us that.”

The post of fice has r emained “vacant” for some time, meaning the Postmaster position has yet to be filled, said Cronin, leading higher officials to believe closing the office would be more cost effective.

Approximately 30 residents from the area attended the meeting and several spoke firmly against closing the office. Residents of the town are concerned about what could potentially happen if the office closes.

The meeting focused on the options they would have if the office is shut down, including roadside delivery, centralized delivery, or using the Morrisonville or Peru post offices.

“The service is str uggling financially to continue the variety of services to all Americans,” said Cronin.

As the managers str uggle with filling Postmaster positions due to financial worries, Schuyler Falls residents are worrying about having to travel 10 miles more to use the postal serv-

ice or even having to change their addresses.

“It’s not a done deal,” said Duroucher. “It’s a study and that’s why we need your concerns to bring back word ... so that we can submit it for everybody to look at. Do we like closing post offices? No, we don’t.”

Schuyler Falls resident Pat Brennan came prepared with a typed statement to be submitted to the record listing his opinions and concerns on the possible closing.

“In my case I live one mile fr om the post office,” said Br ennan. “I will have to travel 10 miles more each day to complete my normal post office transactions. If this change is allowed to take place we will be required to travel further to do a simple task. I know more families in this community will suffer the same circumstances.”

Brennan stated he, along with others in the community, feel it’s an unnecessary decision being caused by “poor management skills.”

Marjorie Johnson of Schuyler Falls voiced her concerns with roadside delivery and the lack of security she and her husband feel. The Johnsons, along with many others, shared concerns of vandalism and the stealing of their mail if the off ice closes.

“We’ve had checks stolen and cashed numerous times,” said Johnson. “W e’ve tried to get them to come directly to our house for delivery but they won’t. We’re not guaranteed safe delivery of our mail.”

The study will continue for another six to eight weeks befor e a decision is made and citizens ar e granted with 30 days to appeal whichever decision is made befor e it goes to Washington, D.C.

But how stupid — or desperate — do you have to be to risk char ges that could land you in federal prison? In our opinion, very stupid, and appar ently the number of stupid people out there isn’t decreasing.

phetamine, better known as “ecstasy ,” across the bor der. Now the woman apparently didn’t have these pills — which weigh ed about 49 p ounds altogether and valued at about $1.4 million — just sitting in plain sight. No, she “allegedly” had them stashed away within her vehicle’s gas tank (sur e, she could argue they wer e planted there and she had no idea that she was carrying more than unleaded gas in her tank, but that’s an argument for another day). The point is, people will go to gre at lengths to pull one over on bor der guards. But is it r eally worth the risk?

Across the state, at the Buffalo Port of Entry, another woman appar ently thought so. There, a 25-year-old Georgia woman tried in March to conceal about 34,000 ecstasy pills. This time, it wasn’t in her car. She was a little more innovative and decided she was going to pass herself off as an expectant mother, with the drugs being her little bundle of joy.

Amazing.

Rewind back to February and back on our side of the state, a 37-year -old Canadian man created a false floor in his vehicle to hide about 40 pounds of ecstasy pills. Earlier that month, another Canadian man, this time a 54-year-old from Ontario, tried to sneak about 50,000 ecstasy pills thr ough the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. No such luck on both

counts.

These are just a few of the cases that have been reported since the beginning of the year. And, that’s just ecstasy. Marijuana, cocaine, and illegal aliens (yes, we’re getting to that part), ar e being smuggled acr oss the world’s longest and most unsecured border on a routine basis.

When speaking to of ficials with the U.S. Attorney’s Of fice, getting a clear picture of what consequences face perpetrators can be a little dif ficult. It all depends on things lik e the seve rity of the crime, whether it’s a first-time offense, or if payment is involved for trafficking the contraband or persons. Fines could be levied in the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars range and jail-time could amount to five to 10 years or mor e — again, based on the details of the case.

Either way, you’d better hope it’s worth doing the time for doing the crime.

What’s the solution to this ever- growing pr oblem? Eternal vigilance. And, though Andrew Jackson said that’s the price of liberty, it’s our belief it’s the key to eternal security.

We have to face facts. In a nation emerging from one of the most devastating financial crises the world has ever seen — and arguably still in the middle

of it with no end in sight — we don’t have the money or the r esources to properly secure our bor der. There simply isn’t enough cash in our cof fers to do it. Even with federally funded programs like Operation Stonegar den — which provides money for departments to pur chase necessary equipment such as v ehicles, l icense p late r eaders a nd cameras to enhance security along the U.S.-Canada border — it’s just a drop in the bucket compar ed to what it would really cost to pr operly combat illegal cross-border activity.

What we need is community-active citizens who keep their eyes peeled for suspicious activity and r eport it. W e need more neighborhood watch groups boasting their presence in not just communities along the bor der, but communities everywher e. It’s only with mor e eyes and ears out there that we’re going to reduce the criminal element.

Bottom line: If you see something suspicious, report it!

Chickens in the city City of Plattsburgh residents should be allowed to keep one to four hens in backyard coops. An ordinance should include the following r ules: no mor e than four hens, no r oosters, and all chickens kept in coops with small enclosed roaming ar eas.

Any or dinance should r equire a permitting process for coops as accessory use buildings based on existing standard set-backs and r ules. Permit costs would cover the cost of inspection and permit processing.

The old saying, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” is something we just can’t escape. Human nature seems titled toward excesses even when the excesses cross the line and become an addiction.

Unless we want mor e of the same, we must hold them accountable for their actions and they must understand just who they work for. They have serious business to conduct, and we

It is the policy of the newspaper to publish that which will “advance the discussion of issues, not to make personal judgments about other contributors.” It also “reserves the right not to publish letters it judges to be inappropriate.”

I'm sure a Speakout fr om a Muslim tearing down Jewish believers or a Baptist tearing down Catholicism would have been deemed inappropriate. So why was an atheist allowed to disparage those who believe in God and trust in prayer?

This is one example of a gr owing trend I have noticed in Letters to the Editor and Speakouts of one group (religious, political, etc.) taking swipes at another . A more careful selection of what is printed is needed.

ots of head shaking and joke making have been taking place over the most curr ent fall from grace for U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY). In case you haven’t hear d, the congressman fr om New York’s 9th District r ecently admitted sending explicit pictures of himself to women via various forms of social media, after originally denying he had done so, blaming it on unscr upulous “hackers.”

Congressman W einer joins an ever-growing fraternity of elected of ficials, sports her oes, movie stars, celebrities and others so called “superstars” who we, the public, have allowed to be placed on a pedestal above the common person.

In doing so, we set them up for a fall from grace and ourselves for disappointment at their failure.

But, is it r eally their failure or ours?

Few among us can r esist the lur e of “fame” and the fortunes and many fringes

even hear chickens, unlike a noisy dog that can keep the whole neighborhood awake (and an enclosed chicken won’t poop in someone else’s yar d – also as opposed to dogs).

Chicken keepers, like other pet keepers would be expected to be good pet owners and adher e to common standards: quiet, clean, stink-free.

Unlike other pets, however , backyar d chickens pr oduce eggs. Eggs from small home raised flocks are not only safer, but are also more nutritious than eggs fr om industrial confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and they taste better too. People all over the U.S.A. who care about their family’s food and about the environment are raising chickens in their backyard.

Taxpaying city residents should have the right to raise one to four hens. Small backyar d flocks ar e a practical way to eat locally raised food and to live a mor e sustainable lifestyle. Hand-raised chickens thrive in small backyar d coops and become docile family pets. Raising chickens is an educational and enriching experience for families with children (brooding hens is a popular science fair project, even).

For families with food allergies or sensitivities, home-raised eggs are a wonderful, safe, and inexpensive sour ce of pr otein. The Common Council and the Mayor should put a Charter Amendment on the ballot in the fall that changes the definition of “Livestock” to allow for the keeping of a limited number of hens on one’s own pr operty. Further , the Council and the Mayor should work to craft an or dinance by which chicken keeping can be a positive experience for all members of the City of Plattsburgh.

must maintain a tight but re spectful rein on their actions and never be willing to give them a fr ee pass for lack of commitment or indiscr etions to their role.

That is why Congressman Weiner should, without pressure fr om his constituents or peers, understand that he has violated the people’s trust and can no longer hold public office. He must step down. Unfortunately, he is blinded by his own power and authority and is most likely blaming the majority of his problems on everyone but himself.

And that, in itself, is the ro ot problem for much of what ails our society today. Blame starts at home. W e’ve put people into positions that sooner or later will result in a meltdown. It’s up to us to shoulder some of the blame and seek solutions that will help others avoid a similar fate in the future.

Lavender’s cold hardy alternative Finding ways to fit in some fitness

M

y mother -inlaw has lar ge, beautiful lavender plants outside of her front door in southern Pennsylvania. All summer long, the plants pr oduce profuse sweet-smelling blossoms that make me envious. Most lavenders ar e not cold hardy to northern New York. Luckily, there is a cold hardy perennial that is a wonderful substitute for lavender — Nepeta or catmint.

Nepeta is a member of the mint family that is extremely easy to grow since it has few pest pr oblems and almost thrives on neglect. The plant’s foliage is slightly aromatic and grey-green in color. The flowers can be white, pink, or lavender -blue and bloom on long spikes early in the summer.

Cutting the plants back after the initial bloom often r esults in both a tidier plant and a new flush of flowers.

This deer-resistant plant is hardy to zone 4 and prefers full sun to part shade. Nepeta does best in a lean soil that is partially sandy. Too much fertilizer causes floppy foliage.

Nepeta is a classic underplanting for osr es. The colors complement and the foliage hides the ugly “knees” of the rose bush. It

is also a wonderful plant for edging, for spilling over walls and walkways and for softening spiky plants like iris and yucca. The pastel blues combine well with pinks and yellows, such as day lilies and yarrow (achillea).

Some suggested varieties to try include: “Felix” which is only 12-inch high and has vivid lavender -blue flowers; “Six Hills Giant” which is one of the tallest growing nepetas at 3 feet; “Sweet Dreams” is 2 feet high and has pink flowers with bur gundy bracts; and “Walker ’s Low” which is about 2 feet by 2 feet and bears long spikes of lavender-blue flowers.

Most of the newer nepeta varieties ar e sterile so you won’t be able to pr opagate them by seed. They do take well to dividing in the spring — which I like. I have some Walker ’s Low gr owing in fr ont of a service berry tree and know of several other ar eas wher e it would look nice in my gardens!

ith today’s hectic lifestyles and busy schedules, it can be a real challenge when trying to find time to fit in exer cise.

The key is to make it convenient. Try some of the following tips to squeeze mor e physical activity into your busy day.

Wake up Early: Wake up 30 minutes early and use the time to go for a walk, jog, do yoga, or even strength train.

Make Household Chores Count: When you’r e doing your chores, do them at a fast enough pace to get your heart rate going both indoors and out.

Be Active While W atching TV : Use hand weights, ride a stationary bike or do your favorite stretching routine while watching your favorite shows.

Involve The Whole Family: Take family walks before or after dinner. Play catch, or ride bikes. It’s best to work up to 30 minutes of exercise daily, but you can get that in with short bursts throughout the day.

Walk The Dog: If you have a dog, tr eat him/her to a brisk walk. It will become ro utine and they will be just as excited about getting exercise as you will be.

Get Social: Some people do better when having a commitment to another person or a gr oup.

Look up some gr oup exer cise classes, find a hiking club, or join a team.

Be Active While Running Errands: Park at the back of the lot when you go to the stor e. Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator when at the mall.

Schedule physical activity as you would any other appointment during the day: Don’t change your exercise plans for every interruption that comes along. Remind yourself that physical activity is important, too.

If you travel for work, plan ahead. Bring your jump-rope or choose a hotel that has fitness facilities. If you’re stuck in an airport waiting for a plane, grab your bags and take a walk.

Remember, there is no single best way to fit exercise into your day. Do what works for you, and make a habit of getting some form of physical activity everyday.

Scleroderma not necessarily a death sentence, says local woman

BEEKMANTOWN — Julie Mooso and W endy Faubert ar en’t going to let scler oderma get the best of them if they have anything to say about it.

The two have each been living with the autoimmune disor der for the past few years, with Mooso being diagnosed in 2008 and Faubert in 2005. It’s been a long r oad for each of them in such a short time, but it’s one that holds a lot of pr omise, they said.

“The first year , I spent it on the couch. I r eally couldn’t move much,” said Mooso, formerly of Champlain now of Coatesville, Pa. “But, then I started going to a rheumatologist and got on the right medications and started getting better.”

Mooso, like many she has found who develop scler oderma, had no idea what the disease was, she said.

Neither did Faubert.

“It was pretty bad,” Faubert said of the advancement of her disease.

‘Eat Dessert First’ event celebrates National Cancer Survivorship Day

PLATTSBURGH — Even if you’ve always been told you couldn’t have dessert until after you finish your dinner, there’s at least one day out of the year where that whole idea is thr own out the window — and for one special reason.

The FitzPatrick Cancer Center hosted “Eat Dessert First: A Celebration of Life” on the CVPH Medical Center grounds June 12. The annual event is as a way to celebrate National Cancer Survivorship Day , explained

The W est Chazy woman also sought help from different specialists to see what, if anything, could be done to help her condition.

Through treatments for other conditions she has — which include lupus, pulmonary arterial hypertension, sleep apnea and conditions known as Raynaud's phenomenon and Degos disease, which effect her cardiovascular system — Faubert found something that worked.

“Remodulin,” she said, uttering the word as if it was the answer she had been looking for all along.

The prescription medication, explained Faubert, is used for the treatment of her pulmonary arterial hypertension and has helped improve the symptoms of her scler oderma. The dr ug is administer ed through a subcutaneous pump that attaches to the waist of her pants and looks similar to a cell phone.

“I’m going to put some bling on it and dress it up,” she said, laughing, as she showed how the device enters her system thr ough a tube

“It’s something that’s been done pr obably 20 plus years on the national level,” said Lafave, who noted this year marked it being done for the 17th year locally. “It’s a celebration of people, of survivorship.”

Each year , the event features entertainment and, of course, an assortment of desserts.

“The whole idea behind it is that sometimes you just have to live life,” Lafave said.

Lorna Marx, Beekmantown, has been coming to the event for the past 14 years, ever since she was first diagnosed with and overcame uterine sarcoma at the age of 46.

“I thought it was a death sentence,” said Marx. “I think most people think that when they think about cancer. But, that’s not always the case.”

Marx underwent tr eatment and sur gery for her cancer and was found to be cancer-free six weeks later .

That was something worth celebrating, she said, leading her to attend her first “Eat Dessert First” that year.

The discoloration and rigidness

of her hands and skin dissipated and, through a combination of other medications to tr eat her ailments, Faubert has gone fr om a woman who needed a wheelchair to maintain her mobility to one who is able to enjoy leisur ely strolls like the thir d annual Scler oderma Walk in Memory of Randy Duprey they both attended last Sunday at the Beekmantown Recreation Park.

“I just can’t believe it. This lady was in a wheelchair. I mean, look at her,” said Mooso, as she hugged Faubert. “She’s beautiful. I’m so happy for her I could cry.”

Seeing her friend’s pr ogress gives her hope, said Mooso.

“I’m definitely going to look into this,” Mooso said of Remodulin.

Kate Duprey, who or ganizes the local Scler oderma Walk each year in memory of her late husband, said she was amazed at Faubert’s progress and hopes the same for Mooso and others like them.

“It shows ther e’s hope that there’s something out ther e that can make this disease go the other way,” said Duprey.

“It was gr eat to see people who were five-, 10-, 20-year survivors.”

The event was so positive, it’s kept Marx coming back each year, she said.

“It’s always been a good event with gr eat entertainment,” she said. “It encourages people in similar circumstances and gives them

a chance to get together. It’s a good reminder that people do survive cancer and they can survive for a long time.”

PLATTSBURGH — Adirondack Medical Center, Community Providers, Inc. (CVPH Medical Center) and Hudson Headwaters Health Network have joined for ces to create the Adirondack Health Institute, a not-for -profit corporation that will help addr ess rapid changes and challenges to the health care system.

AHI will provide leadership for the Adirondack Medical Home Pilot, an innovative initiative begun in 2010 to improve health car e quality, increase access to primary care services, and hold down costs. DWI charge lodged against Plattsburgh woman WEST CHAZY — Melissa Benoit, 30, Plattsburg h, was injured following a one-car accident June 12.

State police r eport Benoit’s vehicle was traveling south on Military T urnpike when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the vehicle to exit the west shoulder of the road. The vehicle rolled over and struck a drainage pipe.

Benoit was transported to CVPH Medical Center , Plattsbur gh, with complaints of neck pain. She was treated and later released.

Chazy native, author helping local charities through sales of his book

PLATTSBURGH — One military veteran is doing what he can to help others who have served their country .

Thomas A. Middleton, a National Guard veteran and native of Chazy , signed copies of his book, “Saber ’s Edge: A Combat Medic in Ramadi, Iraq,” at Peaceful Dove Books and Gifts in Boynton Squar e last Sunday.

However, the book signing wasn’t just pomp and cir cumstance as a means to s ell his 2009 book. It was also a way to get the wor d out the

book’s proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and the James A. Bracy Veterans Scholarship Fund at Clinton Community College.

The scholarship fund — named in honor of the late James A. Bracy, who passed away in October 2009 — helps veterans and their families with costs associated with pursuing a college education.

“When a lot of veterans get back, they don’t have jobs or have a har d time af fording books or gas to get back and for from school,” explained his wife, Linda Bracy. “This helps them with the basics.”

Middleton, who now lives in Essex Junction, Vt., said helping the scholarship f und h as s pecial m eaning t o him as a Clinton Community College graduate.

“It’s neat to be able to do this, because helping veterans is something I feel especially strong about,” Middleton said of donating a portion of the proceeds fr om his book sales to the scholarship fund.

The Lady Indians used a sweep in the doubles matches and won the top two singles matches to earn the Class B title against the Lady Cougars June 7.

Stephanie Omlin scored a matching sets 62 win in the top singles match, while Stephanie Demarais scor ed a matching sets 7-5 win in the second match.

The teams of Abby Higgins — Samantha Banker (6-and-4) and Katie Lawliss — Margaret Mitchell (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) also won for the Indians, while Tori Duprey had the lone win for the Cougars with a matching sets 6-2 win.

Mineville woman connects on rare multi-bearded tom

f Mineville r esident Br enda Sherman tells you th e length of t he beard on the gobbler she shot this spring was 19 inches, you’r e not hearing things.

That’s because Sherman’s tom — the first she’s ever shot — had not one, but three beards, a rarity found in only a very small population of the wild birds.

Because turkeys are scored cumulatively , all three beards — two at 7.5 inches and one at 4 inches — count toward the final tally, making Sherman’s longbeard a once-in-a-lifetime trophy.

Brenda’s husband Jimmer called the bird in for her during the early morning hours of May 7, after car efully placing three hen decoys along with a jake trailing behind in a small opening along a field. The couple then climbed into their gr ound blind to wait for shooting light.

“I then took my chances and r eally made that old slate call make some noise,” Jimmer recalled. “He stopped, turned around and responded. I gave it to him again aggressively. He closed the distance by about 20 feet and gobbled again! I repeated the same aggressive calling and he started closing the distance by 20-30 feet each time.”

It wasn’t the first longbeard that fell victim to Jimmer ’s Mossber g — both his sons harvested their first bir ds with it as well, the first a 21-pound br ute with a paint brush beard for Travis and the second a double spurred 18pounder for Carl, also a rarity.

Brenda’s tom weighed 18 pounds and had 3/4-inch spurs.

While the Shermans were certainly successful during this spring’s turkey season, state biologists ar e predicting the weather -crossed season may pr oduce a smaller than expected bag.

The state is still in the pr ocess of conducting surveys for harvest estimates, but by all accounts it most likely will not be as high as the 2010 harvest of 25,800 bir ds, and will be well below the 10-year average of about 34,000 birds.

Even more disturbing is the fact that soggy, flooded ground made for some of the poorest nesting conditions in years, which biologists fear will mean the number of poults per hen will be down dramatically , the ef fects of which may be felt for the next several
