Annual perennial plant sale slated for Saturday PLATTSBURGH — The Master Gardener Volunteers of Clinton County will hold their fourth annual per ennial plant sale Saturday, June 4, fr om 9:30 a.m. until all plants are gone. The sale will take place at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of fice, 6064 State Route 22.

All of the one-gallon plants will be priced at $5 per plant. Pr oceeds from the sale will benefit Cornell Cooperative Extension’s gar dening pr ogramming in the county.

In addition to the sale, Master Gardener Volunteers will have a re source tent and encourage the public to visit the demonstration perennial garden and square-foot vegetable gar den that morning. Popular fact sheets and resources will be available and volunteers will answer lawn and garden questions.

Zumbathon this Saturday PLATTSBURGH — A Zumbathon will be held this Saturday, June 4, at the Wellness Center at PARC, 295 New York Road, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The event will include basket raf fles, body art and other family-oriented activities. Admission is $10 at the door , with kids admitted free.

Proceeds benefit the Circle of Healing & Hope project at CVPH Medical Center.

Heyworth-Mason Building now on historic registers Plans to develop park around structure moving forward

PERU — The centerpiece of Per u’s ongoing p ark d evelopment p roject h as j ust r eceived a little mor e attention fr om the national level.

The Heyworth-Mason Building, situated on the banks of the LittleAusable River, was recently named to both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The circa 1836 structure, which once housed A. Mason and Sons Lumber Company , was cr edited for having “gr eatly impacted the building industry in Clinton and Essex counties.”

Town Supervisor Peter Glushko commended the ef forts of town historians Ron and Carol Allen for being the driving forces behind pursuing the recognition, adding the landmark status will “open up mor e avenues for grants to preserve the building.”

“It gets us into a few mor e ar eas wher e money’s available,” said Glushko, who added the r ecognition will also draw mor e attention to the development of HeyworthMason Park.

The town has been formally pursuing development of a park at the site since 2005, when it applied for and was award ed a New York State Council on the Arts grant to cover the cost of design work for the pr oject, said Adele Douglas, grant coor dinator for the town and coordinator of efforts to devel-

op the town park. The pr ocess of moving forward has been slow , she noted, r elying heavily on the distribution of state funding.

Milestones to date have included securing an appropriation through Sen. Betty Little, R-Queensbury, for the installation of a new roof on the Heyworth-Mason Building and a state Parks Recr eation & Historic Pr eservation grant to develop the park.

The town started development of the site two years ago, said Douglas, utilizing town resources and volunteers to perform the work. However, the work was deemed too labor intensive and was approved to go out for bid during the town boar d’s May 23 meeting.

The main work to be performed at the site includes developing walking trails thro ughout the pr operty, making impr ovements to the park’s access road and the creation of a parking area.

Behind the Heyworth-Mason Building, a welcome plaza and drop-off look will be developed and a bicycle rack will be installed.

formation about the site, will also be installed throughout the park.

“We hope to have everything wrapped up this year,” said Douglas. “It’s been a long time coming.”

Ron Allen said he would eventually like to see a complete r estoration of the Heyworth-Mason Building, utilizing it as a museum for town history, community meeting room space, and office space for he and his wife and future town historians.

“But, the stonework needs to be r epointed and windows and doors need to be put in the entire building on all thre e stories, before we even begin to worry about the interior,” he said, adding having the building on the national r egister will now make the structure more attractive for grant funding.

The overall cost to develop the park is estimated at $240,000, said Douglas. Half the cost will be cover ed by state grant funding with the other half to come from money set aside by the town for the pro ject for the past four years.

The Heyworth-Mason Building is a stone building built in 1836, originally used as a starch factory. The building was eventually purchased by A. Mason and Sons Lumber Company, which owned it for nearly 100 years.

“The whole complex, when it was owned by A. Mason and Sons Lumber Company, was the heart and soul of Peru,” said Ron Allen. “It was the main employer. People lived by the whistle that blew in the morning, at noon and at 5 oʼclock at night. So, thereʼs a lot of history there.”

The original saw mill and grist mill that were once on the site — built by John Cochran, founder of the former village of Peru — were demolished when the state highway bridge was constructed in 1974.

The Heyworth-Mason Building will now join Peru's other two buildings on the national register, the Bluff Point Lighthouse on Valcour Island and Peru Community Church. The HeyworthMason Building and Peru Community Church, noted Carol Allen, were built by the same man, Robert York.

CCFA urges caution when outdoor burning

Kostyk said another way to re duce the likelihood of a burn getting out of control is by limiting its size.

Even before striking the match to start a burn, Kostyk said it’s important to notify your local fir e department of your plan.

Richards should be held accountable for his actions A t first, we wanted Mark Richards booted off the Johnsburg Central School Board of Education for interrupting the fr ee election pr ocess and tearing down write-in candidates’ campaign fliers in downtown Johnsbur g prior to the May 17 vote. Now , after a public apology, we’d settle for some community service, to show kids that his actions were wrong. Maybe they can learn from his mistake.

After all, Richards is no upstart in North Creek. He’s an established community leader, having served on the school boar d for 11 years. Furthermore, he is a teacher at the Wells Central School. Kids look up to him.

As an elected school official, Richards is supposed to look out for the best inter est of kids in Johnsbur g. Ir onically, that was his main excuse for tearing down the campaign fliers; he wanted to pr event the Citizens Budget Committee candidates fr om

being elected because he said their membership on the school board would be detrimental to the district and the education of its children.

Richards’ passion was understandable, but his actions were inexcusable. He did an injustice to all Johnsburg citizens, especially the kids. Per haps he could have channeled his passion into a more positive, productive and legal manner, such as holding a rally for his fellow board members on the ballot.

Fundamentally, when Richar ds tor e down the fliers, he was committing an act of vandalism. The state penal code calls it criminal mischief in the fourth degr ee, a misdemeanor. Those candidates — Anthony Moro, Carmine Bellotti and David Braley — could have called the police and complained, possibly leading to an arr est. Instead, they took the high road.

At the same time, Richards was preventing voters from making their own decisions during the election process. While not running himself, he was trying to make sur e the three school board members on the ballot — Erwin Morris, Thomas Or dway and Tara Sears — wer e r e-elected (and they were). These ar e the kinds of anti-democracy tactics we see in totalitarian r egimes,

not America. It goes against all we ar e taught in school about right and wr ong, freedom and the American way.

Richards did not breach an ethical code, according to the school superintendent, although we believe his actions wer e unethical. And he clearly violated the district’s mission statement: “The mission of Johnsbur g Central School is to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to learn in a positive school envir onment designed to pr omote academic excellence and to meet individual needs. T o fulfill this mission the JCS staff will work together with the community to help students become responsible, independent, lifetime learners.”

Those last few wor ds r esonate with us.

And we’re left to wonder how Richards can dedicate some of his time to ensur e that students learn to become “r esponsible, independent, lifetime learners,” other than say, “Listen to what I say, not what I do.”

We accept the apology Richar ds made during the May 23 school board meeting.

And we agree with the board president that Richards r egrets his err or and ther e is no reason to dismiss him fr om the school board … but on one condition.

Richards needs to show district students

why his actions were wrong. Moreover, he should teach them that illegal and unethical actions, such as his, have consequences.

The lesson her e should not be “apologize and all will be forgiven.” That’s not how it works in the real world.

Richards should be sentenced, either by the boar d or voluntarily , to perform community service. There should be some kind of punishment involved, and it should help others at the same time.

Above all, the sentence should include direct contact with students — per haps a school assembly — with an apology directly to the kids, an explanation of actions and regrets, and a civics lesson on the election process and criminal justice. For maximum effect, it could end with state police of ficers cuffing Richar ds and leading him of f the stage and then transporting him to the site of his community service — picking up trash along Main Street.

s I write this month’s column, I am sure all the r eaders ar e very well awar e of the devastating flooding the region has endured.

The flooding has caused millions of dollars in damage, for ced residents to evacuate their homes, townhouses, condos, and apartments, and has caused local businesses to close. Governor Cuomo declared a Federal Disaster and formally appr oached Pr esident Obama for financial assistance. FEMA and SEMO representatives have visited the area and have r eviewed the damage assessments. The pr ocess has now officially begun but historically it will move slowly as we move forward.

I attended the Plattsbur gh State graduation which is always a wonderful event. It was made very special this year as our son, Matt, graduated. I toured Mold-Rite and was very impressed with the personnel and the plant. I welcomed a group of potential Canadian business owners to Platts-

burgh at a chamber of commerce seminar . I attended the opening of Little League which is always a special day.

Airborne Speedway opened for the year and as usual was wellattended. Every year since becoming mayor, I pr ovide a pr oclamation to Meadowbr ook Nursing Home and Healthcare for National Nursing Week. I truly enjoy visiting the facility and appreciate all that they do. I also attended the New York State Conference of Mayors meeting for several days in Saratoga Springs.

As I mentioned earlier, the flooding issue has become the priority for all of us. Residents have been misplaced, evacuations have occurr ed, and local businesses affected. The people of the North Country, however, are resilient and will persevere. We have survived a base closure and an ice storm and we will deal with this issue and move ahead in a positive manner.

ll too quickly another month has gone by and, though the crisis has not passed, the weather is improving and soon we will begin to see the lake recede. We ar e encouraged that some help may be coming our way but the harsh r eality is that it will take time and be very limited. The town though must move forwar d and continue to manage our af fairs with a positive outlook on the future.

Most often, in this column, I tend to focus on a particular topic or two.

This time I thought it might be of interest to shar e some of the activities your supervisor participated in. Each month ther e are many meetings, phone calls, email messages, constituent visits, department meetings, meetings with developers, budget and finance issues, personnel issues, resolutions and vouchers to administer, etc.

Beyond the normal monthly activity, I participated in the annual Relay for Life auction, “Bid for the Cure,” that raises funds for cancer er search. I had the opportunity to spend a morning with my friend Bob Pooler at Hometown Radio, WIR Y. That event gave me an opportunity to share , with their listeners, town activity and development as well as a bit of who I am.

I also traveled to Saratoga to support our W ater Wastewater Department and join them in r eceiving recognition for being named by the NYS Rural Water Association the 2011 best public water utility in New

York State! I also co-chaire d the annual Good Scout Br eakfast and fundraiser held at Post 20 that welcomed Bob Parks as our keynote speaker.

I chair the Clinton County Supervisor ’s Association and or ganized our monthly meeting that was held at the Town Hall. I joined in a meeting with Ken Adams the Governor ’s Commissioner for economic development and President of Empir e State Development. I had the great honor to participate in the convocation and awar ds ceremony at PSU and addr essed students who wer e r eceiving academic honors and special r ecognition. I also attended a meeting at Clinton Community College and participated in the Transportation Needs Assessment Project Advisory Committee held at the Development Corporation. I am a member of the Boar d of Dir ectors for the Ever green Townhouse Community that also met this month.

In closing the month, I was pleased to again join in the Memorial Day activities at American Legion Post 20 to honor our V eterans past and present. It was another busy month in the town of Plattsburgh.

As we enter into the summer and holiday season, please drive car efully and be considerate of those who will be visiting our community!

When applied correctly, mulch prevents water loss fr om the soil by evaporation, r educes weed gr owth, prevents weed germination, keeps the soil cooler , pr events soil splashing which in turn prevents soil-borne diseases, and improves soil structure.

Mulch can be applied at any time of the year to flower beds, tr ees, and shrubs. Wood or bark chips ar e often the mulch of choice for these ar eas. Shredded wood or bark is attractive and slow to decompose. Some, such as cedar , also deter insects. When applying mulch to the landscape, I always layer either corr ugated cardboard or several sheets of newspaper between the soil and the mulch. This helps to choke out weeds, but has the advantage of decomposing over time which allows for my per ennials and shr ubs to spread.

Vegetable garden mulches should be applied after the soil has warmed in the spring. The minimum soil temperature most cool season plants re quire is 55 degrees F. Warm season cr ops, such as tomatoes and peppers prefer soil temperatures in the 70s. Mulches insulate the soil. If applied too early , the soil will take longer to warm. Soil temperatur es can be mor e important in determining seed germination and plant growth than air temperatures. If applied after the soil

has warmed, the insulating ef fect of mulches will maintain a uniform soil temperature, buf fer the vegetable’s roots from extreme heat and cool periods.

While many people use wood chips to mulch their per ennial beds, shr ub beds, and tr ees, it is not the best choice for vegetable gar dens. While they do pr ovide good weed contr ol, wood chips have two disadvantages in the vegetable gar den. Wood chips take mor e than one season to br eak down and during the decomposition process they rob soil of nitrogen. The most common vegetable garden mulches include hay and straw, leaves, and grass clippings.

Most gardeners apply a two inch layer of mulch in their gardens. Applying a thinner layer of mulch can actually encourage weed growth. The mulch should be spread evenly and should not apply mulch dire ctly over an area that has just been seeded since mulch can pr event seeds fr om germinating or suf focate newly germinated seeds. In addition the mulch should be kept 2-3 inches away from vegetables, the trunks of tr ees, and the base of per ennials and shrubs. This will prevent decay caused by wet mulch and insect infestations.

Local woman planning half-marathon in memory of her father Household Robert ‘Chip’ Hamilton to be honored, pulmonary fibrosis education to be offered by October event

PERU — When Ruth Hamilton LaClair ’s father , Robert “Chip” Hamilton, passed away , she knew she wanted to do something to r emember him. Considering she has always had a passion for r unning and her father was very supportive of her hobby, she felt it only made sense to put together an event that would combine her love for unning r with the love for her father.

That’s how the first annual Octoberfest Half-Marathon was born.

“I’m an avid runner, so essentially I thought of a way to honor my father with something I enjoyed doing,” said LaClair. “And, we discovered there isn’t really much around here in the fall. So, we decided to put together our own halfmarathon.”

The event was originally intended to be held in time for Fathers Day as a way to honor LaClair ’s father and his recovery from a lung transplant he underwent in October .

However, Hamilton suf fered complications from the procedure, leading the event to be pushed back.

When he passed away in January , the event took a new focus — honoring LaClair ’s father and raising awareness of pulmonary fibr osis, the condition which claimed his life at the age of 64.

“Pulmonary fibr osis a lung disease where the lungs themselves become hard and can’t absorb oxygen and distribute it the way they should,” explained LaClair. “And, a lot of people have it but it gets misdiagnosed. That’s why we’re doing this. We hope we can get the wor d out about it and find a cure.”

Though the half-marathon won’t be held until the fall, LaClair is getting the wor d out early to encourage people to sign up for the inaugural event.

“We really want this to be a success so it will honor him the way he deserves,” said LaClair , adding all proceeds from the event will benefit the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

The first annual Octoberfest HalfMarathon will be held Satur day, Oct. 15, starting at the Per u Volunteer Fir e Department on Bear Swamp Road at 9 a.m. The 13.1-mile will take runners throughout Peru’s apple country, ending back at the fire department wher e awards will be given to the top thre e finishers of the overall race for men and women. Awards will also be given to the top men and women finishers in the following age groups: 19 and

DANNEMORA — The town of Dannemora may not be able to continue making good on a pledge to help rid the Chateaugay lakes of a longtime environmental problem.

Mary McLean Johnson, pr esident of the Chateaugay Lake Foundation, appr oached the Dannemora T own Boar d at its May 25 meeting about restoring funding in the town budget for the foundation. The town has provided $2,500 to the foundation per year for the past thr ee years to assist with r emoval of Eurasian water milfoil — a nonnative invasive aquatic plant known for clogging boat motors and degrading water quality — fr om Upper Chateaugay Lake and Lower Chateaugay Lake and the connecting waterway between the two bodies known as “The Narrows.” However, the town will be unable to make its commitment to the foundation given the town’s curr ent financial status, said Town Supervisor Americo “Ves” Pivetta.

“There’s no money, so we took it out of the budget,” said Pivetta, who cited the r ecent closure of the L yon Mountain Corr ectional Facility as one of the chief economic concerns for the town.

Fire destroys Spencer Boatworks building

Nova Bus Corporation land $231 million contract PLATTSBURGH — Nova Bus Corporation has r eceived an estimated $231.2 million contract.

The contract, awarded by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, will involve final assembly of more than 300 clean-diesel buses at the company’s plant on Banker Road in the town of Plattsburgh.

The reported cost to assemble each bus is $703,874, slightly less than the initial estimated cost of $717,933.

The buses are expected to be delivered later this summer through April 2013.

According to of ficials with the Saranac Lake V olunteer Fir e Department, Spencer Boatworks, located off state Route 3 just outside Saranac Lake, caught fire at about 1 a.m.

Saturday, May 28.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing, but fir e Chief Br endan Keough says lightning may be to blame.

Several classic boats were lost in the blaze, and the building itself was completely destroyed. Firefighters were back in service by about noon Saturday.

In an email sent to WNBZ, owner Jay Annis explained that fir e destr oyed the main shop and office building portion of the business.

Troopers honor first member killed on duty

keith@denpubs.com RAY BROOK — Members of Troop B of the NewYork State Police took time to r emember the first Trooper to ever lose their life in the line of duty.

Troop B commander Maj. Rick Smith and Former Troopers Association President Russell Slingerland unveiled a memorial plaque in honor of Lt. James A Skiff during the annual Troop B Memorial Day ceremonies May 25, the 91st anniversary of the day Skif f lost his life.

“He was stationed in Ogdens-

burg in 1920 and was riding in the sidecar of a division motor cycle when he was killed in an accident,” Maj. Smith said. “We usually have our Memorial Day ceremonies on the W ednesday before Memorial Day , so it just worked out that way that we were able to honor his sacrifice on the 91st anniversary of his death.”

Skiff is listed as the first member of the NYSP to be killed in the line of duty and, until a year ago, was a man without a “Troop.”

“I had a list of T roopers who had died in the line of duty in Troop B, and we had honor ed everyone on that list,” Maj. Smith

said. “After last year ’s services, one of the former T roopers came up to me and told me that he had found thr ee mor e names on the Wall of Honor of of ficers who were killed while serving in Troop B.” The former of ficer who approached Maj. Smith was r etired Troop B Tech. Sergeant Lyn Lobdell.

“I was on the Wall of Honor site and noticed that the names wer e there,” Lobdell said. “After last year ’s cer emony, I talked with Maj. Smith about the names, including Skiff.”

Skiff died at the age of 39 of injuries sustained from an accident which occurred in the city of Ogdensburg on May 25, 1920. Trooper Skif f was a sidecar passenger on a motor cycle that collided with a trolley car.

“Trooper Skiff joined the Division of State Police serving as a First Ser geant at Camp Newayo and in Troop A. He served Troop K as a Lieutenant and later transferred to Troop B.” Skiff lived in New Rochelle.

Prior to joining the State Police, he was an of ficer in the National Guard.

BEEKMANTOWN — Emer gency medical technicians fr om the Beekmantown Volunteer Fire Department and EMT of CVPH were recently honored for saving the life of 4-year -old Aiden Fournier.

Fournier stopped br eathing the night of Mar ch 19. Emer gency r esponders answered the call which resulted in Fournier being transported to CVPH Medical Center and eventually Albany Medical Center.

Fournier ’s condition was reportedly due to a combination bacterial pneumonia and human metapneumo virus.

Minor injuries from MVA PLATTSBURGH — A two-vehicle accident sent a Dannemora woman to the hospital last month.

According to state police, Kayla Pulsifer, 20, was injured May 9 when the vehicle she was operating on Interstate 87 was broad-sided by a tractor trailer driven by Norm Ouellet, 50, of Quebec.

Ouellet’s vehicle r eportedly moved into Pulsifer ’s lane, clipping her 2002 Nissan and sending the vehicle spinning across the highway before it came to rest in the median.

Pulsifer was transported to CVPH Medical Center where she was treated and released.

Man charged after dispute ELLENBURG — Jason Moor e, 31, Ellenburg, was char ged by state police with thir d-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a forged instr ument and filing a false written statement May 30.

PLATTSBURGH — The city by the lake is attracting some bands with some pretty large followings for a special event this weekend.

Hair of the Dog, a Celtic rock band fr om the Albany region, and Trench Town Oddities, an acoustic r ock band fr om Cornwall, Ontario, will headline ‘Rockin’ Out for the Y,” a fundraiser for the Plattsburgh YMCA at the Naked T urtle this Sunday, June 5.

Hair of the Dog began as a three-piece Celtic and bluegrass band in 1993, starting with Rick Bedrosian on bass and vocals; Mike DeAngelis on acoustic guitar, bodhran and v ocals; a nd J ohn H aggerty on banjo, acoustic guitar, accor dion and vocals.

The band eventually grew to include Larry Packer on fid-

dle; Eric Finn on electric guitar, mandolin, violin and vocals; and Scott Apicelli on drums and percussion.

Each of the band members boast impr essive r esumes.

Packer was a member of “Sha Na Na,” had a top ten hit with a Jimi Hendrix-produced band called “Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys” and appear ed with the band in Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz.”

Packer also had a guest appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in a sketch that included John Belushi.

During the 1980s, Bedrosian lived in Nashville where he performed and recorded with r ecording artists Stevie Ray V aughn, Marshall Cr enshaw, Gene Clark of “The Byr ds” and John Stewart of “The Kingston Trio.” Bedrosian is also an accomplished film critic and fine art photogra-

pher; his photo of Paul McCartney of “The Beatles” was featured on the cover of the spring 2010 issue of Classic Drummer magazine.

DeAngelis and Haggerty have had fame in their own right, having performed together in a popular Irish band called “The Porters.”

Finn and Apicelli ar e also both graduates of Boston’s Berklee School of Music.

Finn is a renowned arranger and Apicelli a much in demand music pr oducer and owner of Blue Sky Music Studios.

Hair Of The Dog has performed in venues across the country, playing several major cities and even across the globe in Ir eland, getting in touch with the roots of their Celtic sound. Rockin’ Out for the Y will mark the fourth time the band has played at the Naked Turtle,

Rotary International Fishing Classic canceled High waters, debris on Lake Champlain avert annual fishing event PLATTSBURGH — For the first time in 26 years, the Rotary Club of Plattsbur gh has had to cancel its annual Rotary International Fishing Classic, which was scheduled for Friday, Satur day and Sunday , June 3 - 5, 2011.

fishing tourney due to the danger ous high water level and large objects floating or submerged on Lake Champlain.

“This spring’s unpr ecedented high lake level c oupled w ith d ebris t hroughout t he Lake Champlain basin is a dangerous situation,” said Black. “The Rotary club has decided it would be better to call off the tournament than risk harm to any anglers who would be participating in the tourney this year.”

The Plattsburgh Rotary Club will be crediting anyone whose char ge car d was processed, mailing a r efund to those who

paid in cash at their outlets or whose checks have already cleared the bank and re turning any unprocessed checks via mail. Rotarians will be meeting with all registration outlets to assur e all funds ar e pr ocessed thr ough the Plattsbur gh Rotary Club and then r eturned to potential anglers.

Black said she hopes anglers will r eturn for next year ’s annual Rotary International Fishing Classic, which will be held June 1-2, 2012.

Pot possession lands charge CHAMPLAIN — Mark Bauersfeld, 28, Kahnawake, Que., was char ged with a felony for criminal possession of more than 16 ounces of marijuana May 30.

State police arrested Bauersfeld at the U.S. Port of Entry at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Bauersfeld was remanded to Clinton County Jail where he posted $5,000 bail.

Plattsburgh earns Section VII team golf title, Ried rallies to make states

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC INN — After 35 holes, nothing had been decided between the top two golfers in Section VII in 2011.

AuSable Valley’s John Hickey and Saranac Lake’s Michael Phelan stepped up to the 18th tee tied, entering the final hole at the Saranac Inn Golf and Country Club.

Both went shot-for-shot down the fairway and toward the green, where Hickey took the advantage with a close approach, while Phelan was left with a long putt.

“I looked at the putt fro m three angles and had a great read on it,” Phelan said. “It was the longest read that I had all day.”

In Phelan’s own words, “I had a little too much speed on it, and it didn’t drop.”

That left Hickey with a short putt for the win.

“My heart was racing,” Hickey said about the moments before he drained his only putt on the 18th hole, capturing the 2011 individual title by one str oke with a two-day total of 151.

“My goal was to try and get inside of him with each shot,” Hickey said of the final hole. “I left it a little short on the green, but it is better on the 18th to be short than long.”

Phelan trailed by six strokes after the first day of team play, which was won by Plattsburgh, who beat the Red Storm by eight strokes, 317-325.

Phelan, who opened play with an 80, fire d the low r ound of the tournament with an even-par 72, at one point being two-under par through 14 holes.

“He gave me a r un for my money,” Hickey said. “He played an awesome r ound and he put the pressure on me.”

“I came out to play my own game and not worry about what others wer e doing,” Phelan said. “I knew that if I played my game, I could get back into contention.”

Hickey and Phelan (152) will r epresent Section VII at the NYSPHSAA golf championships this weekend, along with Plattsburgh’s Ethan V otraw (158), Northeastern Clinton’s Nolan Reid (158), Saranac Lake’s Patt McHugh (159), Elizabethtown-Lewis’

For White, not many thought that he would far e well after car ding an 1 1 on the opening hole of day two, but the Lion golfer

fired a 70 in the remaining 17 holes to finish sixth.

“Leaving the first hole, my only thought was that I was going to hole out on my next shot,” White, who bir died the par -three third, said. “I couldn’t do any worse than I had just done on that hole, so I guess that it got me going.”

For Votraw and McHugh, this will be the fourth time that they have represented their section at the states, while McHugh being a

“It feels pr etty good to be going back,” McHugh said. “I played well and didn’t take any big numbers here.”

“I am r eally happy to go back,” V otraw said. “I am playing pretty consistently right now. I am a little weak in the short game, but I will work on that through the week.”

Tyler Mesec connected for a home r un, a single and a pair of r uns batted in for the Bobcats, while Nick Ger o had a double and two singles to go with two RBIs and Bryant Fortin had a pair of singles and three steaks.

Mesec also str uck out 12 in pitching a complete game victory.

Chris Kordziel had a double and a pair of runs batted in, while R.J. Reid added a tworun single.

The Eagles scored in each of the first three innings — including a five-run second — to advance in to the Section VII/Class D semifinals with a win over Wells May 27.

Kyle Bissonette led the top-seeded Eagles on the mound, striking out 13 batters and allowing only three hits in the win.

Nathan Reynolds connected for a pair of triples, while Michael R yba had thr ee singles, Kaleb Snide added a triple, Craig Botten had two RBIs on a single and John T regan had a single and an RBI.

Kasey Faver eau pitched all eight innings to earn the win for the Chiefs, while W ill Flynn did the same for the Indians.

Saranac boys, girls track and field teams sweep Section VII meet PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac varsity track and field programs were dominate throughout the 2011 season, and put the exclamation point on that by sweeping the Section VII championship meet May 28.

Boys

The Chiefs boys team won their third straight title, edging out Ticonderoga.

Saranac’s Corey Duval scor ed a win in the shot put, while Francis Fr ederick finished in second place.

Jeremy Bullis won the discus for the Chiefs, where the team swept the podium with R yan St. Clair and Frederick.

Jake Martindale added a win in the 400-meter hurdles, while the team of Micah Patterson, Billy Badger, Casey Jackson and Martindale won the 1,600 relay.

Peru’s Dan Lennon scored three wins in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Jonathyn Granger of T iconderoga also scor ed thr ee wins in the 100, 400 and long jump.

The Lady Chiefs won their fifth consecutive title in track and field, led by Alexandra Farrington, who won in the 100 hur dles, 400 hurdles and long jump.

Saranac’s Maxine Rock won the triple jump, while V ictoria Phaneuf and T risha Helms scor ed the top two spots in the shot put.

On the track, Beekmantown’s Jess Huber scor ed the wins in the 100 and 200, Northeastern Clinton’s Molly Roush won in the 400 and 800, Plattsburgh’s Emma Deshaies won the 1,500 and Seton Catholic’s Anna Rabideau earned the 3,000 title.

In the relay events, The EKMW 400-relay team of Sodie Stoner , Haile Snyder , Delaney Sears and Athena Pepe scor ed a victory, while Plattsbur gh’s 1,600 r elay team of Brin Keyser , Emma Deshaies, Rayanne Canet and Emy Russell and Seton’s 3,200 relay team of Mar garet Champagne, Rabideau, Phoebe Christopher and Paige Spittler also scor ed wins.

The Lady Eagles of Westport scored all of their r uns in the second and thir d inning, beating the Lady Eagles of Chazy in the opening r ound of the Section VII/Class D tournament May 25.

Westport scored five runs in each the second and thirs inning, and wrapped out 14 hits in the win, led by Ellexus Vaughn, who totaled thr ee hits and four r uns batted in while hitting a triple.

Bugs and bats: some flying nuisances

I

t has finally happened. After a half century of tromping and paddling throughout the vast recesses of the Adirondacks, I was finally forced to thr ow in the towel. I felt like a battered boxer, but I probably looked more like a puffy, cranberry muffin.

It happened just last weekend, while I was fishing on the small ponds near Lake Clear.

With a blizzard of buzzing of mosquitoes in hot pursuit, I was actually chased from the woods.

Never befor e have I experienced bugs so thick, so ravenous and in such abundance. The buzzing was incessant and ther e was no escape. I was forced to give up.

Mind you, I was prepared, sporting a full arsenal of bug dopes, sprays and other concoctions. I wor e long pants, which wer e tucked into tall, r ubber boots and my head net was cover ed by the tight collar of a turtleneck shirt.

I had taken pr oper pr ecautions to insure that no patch of skin was available, beyond the fingers I had cut fr om cotton gloves to allow me to fish. I sprayed on plenty of bug dope, swatted when I could and even considere d drinking a bit at the height of the battle. I knew whiskey wouldn’t help, but I figured it couldn’t hurt either as I already had a buzz going on.

After absorbing as much torment as one could possibly bear , I decided to

call it a day . W ith the cloud of mosquitoes in hot pursuit, I stashed my canoe along the shoreline and turned tail for the trailhead, about a twenty-minute hike.

A buzzing gr ey cloud accompanied me on the frenetic foray that followed. Mosquitoes filled the car as I quickly slid in through a small crack in the door.

Although fully encapsulated by glass and metal, I was still under fire.

There wer e nearly as many mosquitoes on the inside of the windshield as there were on the outside.

With a lingering scent of Adirondack Aftershave, (Old W oodsman) tantalizing my nostrils, I hightailed it for home.

When I returned to retrieve the canoe, early the following morning, the woods wer e eerily quiet. It was cool and damp, and very few bugs were in the air. Since I was dressed accordingly, I figur ed taking a few quick tr olls across the pond would be in order.

I made a few passes, without a tap.

But as soon as the sun was fully in the sky, I remembered why I came. Quickly, I packed up and paddled to shore, shouldered the canoe and beat a path to the car , befor e the full squadr on could assemble.
