Theta Kappa Beta fraternity ordered to cease operations

PLATTSBURGH — The State University of New York at Plattsbur gh has of ficially withdrawn r ecognition of the Theta Kappa Beta fraternity following a series of violations of campus regulations.

The fraternity was of ficially stripped of its recognition April 28 after campus judicial pro cedures found the fraternity was r esponsible for hosting an activity which involved underage individuals in possession of alcohol. According to a press release issued by the university, the sanction means Theta Kappa Beta “must cease all operations as a college fraternity and that all campus privileges have been revoked.”

The decision stemmed from a fall 2010 incident in which underage fraternity members were photographed with alcohol at a fraternity function. The decision was appealed by members of Theta Kappa Beta but that was re cently denied, said William Laundry, the university’s vice president for student affairs.

“When a group is disciplined, you obviously look at the incident at hand and it was the most recent incident that resulted in the sanction being imposed — the withdrawal of their

recognition,” explained Laundry, who added similar incidents date back several years for the fraternity. “The members has the right to appeal the sanction, but when looking at the most r ecent incident and their r ecord, that’s when the determination was made the sanction was appropriate.”

Laundry said the decision is in effect until the last of the current members of Theta Kappa Beta have graduated or four years has gone by, whichever comes first.At that time, the fraternity can reapply for recognition.

“If that happens, then ther e’s a pr ocess for forming a Greek fraternal organization on campus,” said Laundry. “It involves the Committee on Greek Affairs and the Interfraternity Council. It’s isn’t just filling out a paper and you’re back in; you’ve got to go thr ough a process.”

The committee will r eview how the fraternity has handled its loss of r ecognition, he said.

“They’ll look at if they have been tr oublesome or if they have complied and basically traveled the straight and narrow,” said Laundry. “Will that happen? We’ll see.”

Interfraternity Council President Nick Lavigne said he was saddened by the situation but supports the university’s decision.

The Theta Kappa Beta fraternity, which occupies this house on South Catherine Street, has been stripped of its recognition by the State University of New York at Plattsburgh following accounts of underage possession of alcohol and other conduct unbecoming of a sanctioned fraternal organization.

“Our fraternity and sor ority community holds each other accountable and in living by the values that are there for the purpose of being better men and women,” said Lavign e.

“People in the community were kind of upset they weren’t upholding their values.”

“It is fr ustrating and disappointing for a group to lose their recognition, but it’s not the end of the world,” said Laundry . “We’ve had other gr oups lose r ecognition ... and they’ve

made a c omeback a nd a re b igger a nd b etter than ever.”

Should the fraternity continue to operate, members will be subject to college disciplinary action, according to a statement from the university. As a result, the Center for Sorority and Fraternity Life and the University Police are asking students and the public to r eport any evidence of the fraternity continuing to function.

The proposed 2011-12 annual budget for the Plattsburgh City School District is $38,399,039, a 2.3 per cent incr ease over the current budget of $37,519,424.

The budget being put before voters utilizes $1.9 million from its fund balance and another $479,000 fr om its r eserve fund to offset a “strong reduction” in state aid of $2,438,226 and other increases in the cost of doing business as school district accor ding to superintendent James “Jake” Short.

The budget contains a 2.98 per cent increase in the tax levy from $18,755,740 to $19,314,881. The budget also contains a tax rate estimated at $21.53 per $1,000 of assessed pr operty value. The current tax rate is $20.96 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

Local professor, author, travel expert pens new book

PLATTSBURGH — Get ready ... get set ... travel!

Summer travel is just around the corner and two destinations local author and travel expert Steve Howell says are important to consider ar e Boston and Quebec City.

Howell’s new travel guide book, "Photographic Boston," hit shelves last week and "Quebec City Complete," an application he created for use on the iPhone and iTouch, is due out any day now.

Photographic Boston, published by Countryman Press, covers tips for locals and tourists alike. The book in-

cludes Boston spring, summer and fall photos, destinations fr om downtown to Cambridge ar e some of the highlighted places which inspired Howell to take more than 70 photos.

Howell said he took the approach like a tourist, including as much of the city as possible in his book. He pounded the pavement, looked at maps and used a Boston iPhone app published by Sutr o Media — the same company that helped him publish his Quebec City iPhone app.

“It’s affordable, an easy to carry book that can almost double as a souvenir because even if you’re not a photographer it just has beautiful color photos,” said Howell.

Photographic Boston goes outside the normal tourist box and explor es a dif ferent part of Boston neighborhoods that you might not normally think to go to in Boston, Howell said, like the Emerald Necklace — a series of nine parks designed by Fredrick Olmsted, landscaper artist and architect of Central Park in New York City.

The Emerald Necklace is strung along for many miles,

starting with the formal gardens of Boston Common, the Boston Garden, the Commonwealth Mall, then to near where the Boston Red Sox play, then it gets into a mor e natural state and ends.

Howell visits the Harvar d University-run horticultural park.

"Its landscaped and natural setting is gor geous," said Howell. "You can climb these little mountains there and see the skyline of Boston; it’s a little bit outside the city of Boston."

South Boston destinations include beautiful seaside scenery in the book and big touristy spots, and other neighborhoods with over a dozen entries in each chapter.

The book includes 90 entries; including a side trip Salem on how to hop on the commuter train.

The T-subway stations, including stops, ar e covered as well, to familiarize r eaders with one form of transportation available.

Howell covers tips on basic photo shooting for the novice to the expert. For example, how to get copyright or press release info from the press de-

partment at fine arts museum, photo gallery included highlighting museums, what a visitor might expect, the best time to visit, what type of lighting will visitors see, will it cost money.

“St. Patrick’s Day in Boston is a hoot; don’t miss it," said Howell. "Boston is the best place ever to be for St. Patrick’s Day." Howell’s iPhone app includes the restaurants and history of Quebec, Canada with things to do, and the tasty cultural foods.

“It’s a big major metropolitan area and in 15 minutes you can be in the middle of a forest; it’s amazing for that fact. Quebec is so gor geous and it’s so green,” Howell said.

The app has at least 20 entries, and is less expensive than a book at $2.99 and is always up to date, said Howell.

"If a restaurant closes, I just delete that entry ," Howell said. "You can’t do that with a travel guide book. W ith the app you can delete entries, it’s so easy, and you can add comments."

Politicians showing leadership skills in flood A

ll over the North Country, we’ve seen more water than we can handle. The constant rain helped flood aptly named byways like the River Road, Old River Road and W ater Str eet; shoreline homes; parks; ferry stations; boat launches; and more … much more.

We’ve seen people boating wher e they normally w ould b e w alking, b icycling o r driving. We’ve seen bridges collapse, roads washed out, cars submer ged, businesses close and ferries discontinue service. We’ve seen people hurt and almost die.And we’ve seen strangers care for one another like family members.

On the whole, we’re pleased with the response from our local and state governments.

County town of Moriah, wher e r esident Anna Mayhood jumped fr om her SUV to save her own life two days before.

We asked Cuomo if he had made plans to meet “the woman who almost died here the other day” — Ms. Mayhood — and he said no. Asked what he would say to her to ensure her that New York state’s r oads ar e safe, he quipped, “Y ou ar e lucky; light a candle.”

Like a tr ue politician, he didn’t answer the entir e question. In fact, we’r e disappointed he made a joke out of a question that included the wor ds, “the woman who almost died here.” He was trying to be funny in fr ont of his friends and the TV cameras, but his brief lapse of judgement showed a lack of r espect and compassion with regard to a life-threatening situation.

Moreover, the governor blamed Mother Nature, not a lack of r oad and bridge inspections, for what happened at that historic bridge, which was said to have been built more than 100 years ago to cross over the Lake Champlain and Moriah Railr oad tracks.

But give him credit; Cuomo did visit. He

came north to inspect the flood damage and declare a state of emer gency for Essex County when he could have easily stayed in Albany to issue the order.

As he stood on the brink of the collapsed Broad Str eet Bridge — staring into the wreckage of asphalt, stone, timber and iron — we heard him utter these word s under his breath: “Man, that’s a frightening drop.”

The flooding situation was just as frightening for local politicians, such as Moriah Town Supervisor T om Scozzafava, who praised Cuomo for his support. The supervisor pointed to the DOT employees working side-by-side with town highway crews.

They were fixing the erosion — 4 feet of topsoil — that exposed a sewer main during the April 27 flash flood. He said this kind of state-local cooperation wouldn’t have happened a year ago under Gov . David Paterson. And he’s right. Gov. Locally, the r esponse from town and village officials during the flooding crisis has been tremendous. We’re proud to have lead-

ers like Keene Supervisor Bill Ferebee, who risked his Jeep in rising water to help transport neighbors to safe ground. Let’s not forget the firefighters, emergency technicians, highway cr ews, and the countless volunteers who filled sandbags and manned Red Cross shelters.

Times like these, we’r e pr oud to say we live in a small town, where neighbors look out for one another . It’s good to see our elected officials are doing the same.

Yet the flooding is still not over , and there’s plenty more work to be done. The er building will take many months and millions of dollars. Let’s just hope the political leadership skills exhibited these past two weeks are practiced consistently and are not simply flashes of brilliance.

If we look broadly at the health care services that ar e needed, they fall into thr ee broad categories.

First are those services that serve a collective good for all of us — the public health aspect. Included in this category ar e things like care of a mother during pr egnancy to assure the health of the baby; labor and delivery for newborns and well child car e, including immunizations. It also includes annual flu shots and other actions to r educe communicable disease. In a br oader sense, it may also include scr eening for tr eatable disease by doing things like mammograms, rectal exams and diabetes and blood pr essure checks.

The performance of this public health sector is good for all of us and pro tects our collective health. It is something that everyone living in this country should have. This kind of care should be a basic right and pro vided See WELCH, page 7

pril arrived with cold, wet weather which has caused sever e pr oblems and devastating damage throughout the r egion and parts of the city especially the North Mar garet Str eet area. The rain caused ar ea flooding and a r ecord high water mark in Lake Champlain which has br ought challenges for the city as we closed W ilcox Dock, our city waterfr ont ar ea, and monitor the Saranac River . Hundr eds of people have been evacuated and local businesses wer e closed. County and city employees have done an outstanding job working together through this crisis.

I personally had a very busy month. I performed a wedding ceremony for a couple who I know very well. The cer emony was special as they are wonderful people.

I visited the government class of Dr . Tom Mandeville and answered many questions from the students. I thor oughly enjoy meeting college students and always listen to their concerns and perspectives. I was invited to speak at the Sunrise Rotary . As usual, I enjoyed answering their questions and discussing city business. They ar e a wonderful group of people to work with.

This includes the head injur ed patient, the spinal cor d injury, those needing liver and heart transplants and other rar e but exceedingly expensive problems. The number of people needing such car e is small, but the costs ar e enormous. The only way to afford such care is to spread the risk acr oss the lar gest possible pool of people. This kind of car e should be covered by one very larg e nationwide “reinsurance” program that everyone would pay into. T o qualify for care under this plan, one would have to meet a “means test.”

As an example, if the cost of car e exceeded twice your annual income, you would become eligible.

For all of the car e in between — the broken leg, the episode of pneumonia or a gall bladder attack — it would be appr opriate to consider regular health insurance. For each of us, the decision of how much financial risk we can af ford would determine what level of coverage

Valley Motor Show at the Crete Center. This event was a success as usual as Mike and his staf f do a first-class job whatever they ar e involved with. I delivered a proclamation at the Military Appreciation Day at the Cr ete Center which was very special. I truly appr eciate our veterans, active military personnel, and their families. The HalfMarathon was a success despite the cold, rainy weather.

Mayor ’s Cup and Regatta plans continue to move ahead. I am excited this year with our schedule of events and as we get closer to the July 9th weekend more activities will be announced.

As May arrives, our outdoor work begins. Grass begins to grow and needs to be cut, our parks and str eets need cleaning, potholes and paving pr ojects begin, sidewalk replacement work starts, and special events begin to take place. We do our best to make the city as pre sentable as possible.

With the flooding situation, however , our first priority will be to assist our residents and businesses until Lake Champlain r ecedes. I appreciate the patience of the community as we do our best to work through this serious challenge. Thanks!

Insurance of this type also makes sense for an employer to pur chase to be sure the workers ar e cared for and returned to work promptly after illness or injury. This makes it a tr ue insurance product. It also would allow for pr emium adjustment for those who choose to live a healthy lifestyle versus those who decide to take greater personal risk.

We have a health care system that is not working well. T o impr ove upon this, we need to develop a system that will recognize that it is to our collective advantage to assure access for everyone. That will assure that the car e is appr opriate to the needs of the person and avoids unnecessary and expensive care that does not add to length or quality of life. W e need car e and coverage pr ovided by private industry but contr ols placed by collective national decision making.

e began the spring season with hopes of warmer weather, new business moving into town and a general desire for a return to better times with new feelings of optimism.

That has changed for many town of Plattsbur gh and Champlain Basin r esidents and pr operty owners.

Almost overnight and without warning Lake Champlain waters began rising to historic levels, bringing many to their knees with feelings of despair and discouragement.

The past few days I have been working with agencies and emer gency services to help monitor the developing situation and manage the town’s infrastructure. We have also provided assistance where possible but the town cannot r everse the damage that has been done. Until the lake r eturns to a level below flood stage the crisis will continue. Ther e may be some assistance fr om FEMA, but that will not cover the loss many have experienced.

Our highway department worked diligently to repair the Cumberland Head Road preventing total er osion of the pavement.

The W ater W astewater Department has been manning our pump and lift stations in

an effort to maintain the flow of wastewater and stormwater r unoff. We also acknowledge the ef forts by the city public works department and their challenge to keep the treatment plant operating.

Cleanup will not be easy and new unknown pr oblems will surface. The cost to pro perty owners, business and municipalities will be significant. It will take a long time for many to recover from this event. But, r ecover we must and during that pr ocess we will must r emember that our things can be eplaced r and we will thank God that no lives were lost.

We will continue to work hard , make economic progress and seize the opportunities that come our way . The r ecent events will be a learning experience and we will become stronger as a result of the experience.

During the coming months, it will be important for families and friends to help each other work through this period. It will take time but this too shall pass and we will be stronger as a result.

Discussing ‘gluten-free’

Quackgrass: one troublesome weed

T

he one never ending task a gardener has is weeding.

Weeds not only look unsightly in the garden, but they compete for nutrients and water, causing poor gr owth of your flowers and vegetables. Of all of the weeds that I fight in my gar den, the one weed that is the most invasive, and annoying, is quackgrass.

Quackgrass (Agropyron repens) is a per ennial and a tr oublesome weed. The Latin name means a ‘sudden field of fir e’ which attests to its ability to take over lawns, fields and gardens. The plant is hardy to zone 3 and is actually native to Eur ope. It has been gr owing in the U.S. for over 200 years.

Quackgrass is has thin, flat, green leaf blades that are wider than the average blade of turf grass. The plant does reproduce by seed, but is invasive due to its ability to spread through rhizonmes.

Rhizomes (under ground stems) ar e yellow to white, 1/8 inches in diameter , with distinct joints about every inch. Each joint is capable of a new blade of grass. The cr eeping r hizomes ar e so tough they can grow through a potato tuber, or push up thro ugh asphalt pavement! If left to gr ow, they will form a dense mat 4 inches thick in the upper part of the soil since one plant can pr oduce 300 feet of r hizomes each year.

A rototiller should never be used in an ar ea with quackgrass as each chopped up bit of rhizome is ca-

pable of producing a new plant. Mulch should be used as much as possible to smother plants, but you can be assure d that the rhizomes will creep along until there is an area in which it can send up a shoot.

Rhizomes have to be hand dug as much as possible without br eaking them off in the soil, then dried and disposed of. The main thing is to r epeatedly eliminate the blades by slicing them of f. W ithout photosynthesis the plant will not be able to stor e food reserves in the r hizomes and will eventually die. Never add newly dug plants to your compost pile or you will have a quackgrass infestation there!

Chemical contr ol, with the use of a nonselective herbicide such as glyphosate, can be used with quackgrass. The herbicide should be applied when there is no wind and when ther e will be no rain for 48 hours. The grass must be gr een and actively growing for best results. Before applying, remember that glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that will kill almost any green plant it contacts. It is important to thoroughly read and follow the herbicide’s instr uctions and apply glyphosate only to the plants you want to eradicate.

PLATTSBURGH— The Plattsbur gh Farmers and Crafters Market will kick of f its 2011 summer season this Saturday, May 14.

The market, located in the Durkee Str eet parking lot, will r un Satur days fr om 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. through Oct. 9, and Wednesdays starting in June.

Market organizer and maple vendor Patricia Parker is excited for the onset of the season, particularly with the added vendors for this year.

“We ar e filled to capacity , but now we’r e also renting like six spaces on the end—we’re growing,” said Parker.

Among the seven added vendors ar e a wooden toy purveyor, a new wine vendor , a quilt vendor, and a meatstick merchant.

Parker is particularly excited about the addition of a meat vendor , which will featur e pork.

“We have a person who raises their own pork and chicken, and eventually as the season wears on — there will be lamb and duck,” she said. “We’ll also have mor e of a variety; we not only have like six vegetable gr owers, with their own special brand, but also four bakeries.”

Also in the vein of diversification, Parker emphasized “something r eally gr eat” as the inclusion of a gluten-free baker.

Phil Favreau, who has been the lone wine vendor at the market for thr ee years, welcomes the company of the Hid-In Pines Vineyard of Morrisonville.

“There going to be two wineries down there, myself and Mr. LaMoy,” said Favr eau, referring to Hid-In Pines owner and operator Richard LaMoy . “I’m very happy to have

Like Parker, Favreau welcomes the diversity.

“He makes a very dif ferent wine than I do — it’s not a competition at all,” he said.

LaMoy was attracted to the market because of its wide exposur e, having pr eviously sold vegetables there.

“I found the market had good exposure, so that's what I’m looking to capture here.”

Like Favreau and Parker, LaMoy is not worried about competition, but instead wishes to expose patrons to new experiences.

“There will be free wine tastings, so people can try some of the wines that they many not have tasted before,” LaMoy conveyed.

Ken Gadway, the awar d-winning, Adirondack wood turner , will also be featur ed as a “kick-off.”

“He’s going to bring the lathes and he will actually be demonstrating the entir e time,” said Parker. “That’s going to be a treat for the day.”

In addition to the added purveyors, the WIC Program’s weekly fr ee sample is an enticement which will attract shoppers.

“The first week their going to be making a maple item,” tempted Parker.

The market has also come be known as a unique social outlet, said Parker.

“We are more of a social event for a lot of people,”she asserted. “I love going to the farmers market, and seeing all the people I haven’t seen since last year.”

Favreau mirrored Parker ’s sentiment, noting his overall enjoyment as a participant.

“There are so many nice people, people that really care about what they’re buying, and the food their eating,” said Favreau.

“It’s a very good experience, and we’ve been very happy to be part of it,” he added.

News of the Week Councilors vote for hold on LED signs PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh councilors voted unanimously in favor of a six month moratorium on light-emitting diode (LED) signs, which have begun to appear in the city, primarily in the Cornelia Str eet business district. The moratorium was at the request of the Zoning Board of Appeals, who seek to update the city’s or dinances on digital signs, and whose chairman addressed the issue at a public hearing April 26. There was concern the signs made the ar ea look a bit too much like Las Vegas.

Peru officials finalize historical signs PERU — With the public comment and viewing period over May 6, officials will start to settle on the final versions of eight historical signs which document Heyworth/Mason Park’s past. The signs primarily focus on Native Americans; mills, as well as other early industries; A. Mason and Sons Lumber Mill; Heyworth V illage in modern times, and the 1998 flood. The signs are the work of Adel Douglas, Peru’s grant coor dinator, Car ol and Ron Allen, town historians, Maja Smith, of the Lake Chaplain Basin Pr ogram, in addition to a number of volunteers.

Home invader denied appeal PERU — Jennifer Macduf f, now 20, who or chestrated a robbery in July 2009, was denied appeal of her six year jail sentence. Macduff had argued that because her counsel was inef fective, her plea was involuntary . In denying their appeal, court justices noted she had never sought to withdraw her plea and that her sentence was a good deal shorter than the maximum allowable.

Councilors apply for fountain grant PLATTSBURGH — City councilors voted unanimously to apply for a grant, thr ough the state’s Main Street Program, which would provide roughly $38,000 to build a fountain in Trinity Park. The structure would be r oughly eight feet high and eight feet in diameter .

Officials hope it would bring visitors to the ar ea and thus help local businesses.

‘Friends’ get in touch with nature

Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — As part of the event r oster for the Friends of Pointe Au Roche State Park, Judy Heintz led a bird walk May 7.

Heinz, who has has been bird ing “on and off” for more than 30 years, noted Point Au Roche as a “pretty good birding place, for people who like to go look at birds.”

Having traversed the ar ea several times alr eady this season, Heinz has seen as many as 76 species.

“I’ve scouted, so I had an idea where some species ar e hanging out," she said.

Participants met at the Natur e Center on Camp Red Cloud Road and walked Pointe Au Roche for more than two hours.

Although not as bir d-dense as Heintz’s typical outings, participants enjoyed seeing and listening to several

species, including sparr ows, r obins, wrens, blackbir ds, cowbir ds, chickadees, warblers, swallows and nuthatches.

Even at the onset of the walk, watchers encounter ed the Phoebe, distinctive for its bobbing tail.

The highlight of the excursion occurred when Heintz and fellow bir der Hal Higden spotted a r ed-breasted Merganser, which Heintz happily noted as the “coup of the day.”

Plattsburgh r esident Keitha Farney enjoyed the trip, differentiating it from her own habitual experience “backyard birding.”

“It's a whole different thing to finding [birds] in the field,” she said.

Recent flooding pr evented participants from venturing too far , a condition which Heintz also noted is af fecting the wildlife.

“Birds ar e always an indicator of how the envir onments going — it's good to keep good records,” she said.

Among the bir ds viewed which seemed affected by the weather conditions were mallards, who participants witnessed swimming in a pond which was formerly a road.

“The mallards are having a hard time with dabbling," Heintz noted, ruefully.

Higden, who Heintz lauded as “much mor e of a bir der, ” acknowledged he has been bir ding for “decades,” largely at Pointe Au Roche.

As a park advocate and a bir der, Higden is “trying to encourage people to use the park in the best ways” while utilizing “very little support staff.”

Participating in the walk, said Heintz, was an important way to raise awareness about the envir onment and earn support for the Friends of Pointe Au Roche — a non-profit organization formed to "pr otect, preserve, and pr omote" the park.

denpubs@denpubs.com PAUL SMITHS — Paul Smith’s College officials announced that former Gov . David A. Paterson will speak to the 2011 graduating class this weekend.

Sunday, May 15 — became New York’s 55th governor after another contr oversial figur e, Eliot Spitzer , was forced to resign amid a prostitution scandal. He served just two years in the Executive Mansion, taking office in 2008 and finishing in 2010.

But in just two years, Paterson made a name for himself, delivering scathing remarks about the state Legislature while fending off allegations that he attempted to cover up an assault case involving one of his top aides.

Paterson rose to public of fice in 1985 as a 31-year old state senator serving a district in Harlem. At the time, he was the youngest senator in Albany and later became the leader of the Senate’s Democratic minority. He was elected lieutenant governor in 2007 and became the state’s first black governor after the Spitzer resignation.

Dr. John W. Mills, president of Paul Smith’s College, notes that Paterson — who is legally blind — has overcome a variety of obstacles throughout his life.

Mills said Paterson was thru st into a high-pro file political role at the beginning of the nation’s worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

LAKE PLACID — With the roar of the engines, the Kyle Petty Ride for Charity Motor cycle ride left the High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid, heading first for Corning and eventually to Florida.

The night before, Petty received a check for $6,500 through the Resort’s fundraising event, held in the Dancing Bears Lounge.

“I had a number in mind of what this night would raise, and this number is definitely bigger ,” Lori Fitzgerald of High Peaks Resort said.

Petty was pleased with the donation, and with the week that he and his team had spent in Lake Placid.

Petty said that he hoped to r eturn to the area for either another ride or to participate in the Geoff Bodine bobsledding event, which organizers hope will be back on the Mount Van Hoevenberg track in 2012.

“Now that I know about this place and what is going on, I’ll have to come back,” Petty said. “I asked Geoff if I would be able to bring my bike for the bobsledding, but he said it’s probably not a good time for that in late January and February.”

PLATTSBURGH — It’s not always easy to meet someone and, in today’s fast-paced society, it’s not like there’s a lot of time to go looking for Mr . or Ms. Right. That’s wher e Julie Woodley and Jessica Ellithorpe want to help.

The two ar e behind an effort to bring speed dating to town thr ough their brainchild, “7Minit Dating.” It’s a way for single men and women to meet each other in a quick, ef ficient and comfortable environment.

Woodley — owner of DressCode, which will sponsor the initiative with host site Olive Ridley’s — said her single customers have expressed interest in speed dating, leading her to look into setting up the service.

“I felt like it was a need in our community,” she said. “I

just think it is a simple concept and one that could r eally take off and be a lot of fun.”

It’s taken quite a bit of planning, including building a website, securing the venue, and defining a format, she said. And, t here’s s till m ore work to be done.

“Probably more than I know right now,” said Woodley. “We have to review applicants and pick compatible dates ... We also have to set up the bar and organize the dating. After that, we have to go over the comments and match up dates. So, it does entail a lot.”

“We’ve pr obably taken on more than we r ealize, but we’re both single moms, so we ar e masters of time management and ef ficiency,” added Ellithorpe, laughing.

“We’ll get it done.”

The 7Minit Dating format is rather self-explanatory , said Ellithorpe. Each night

“At the end of the process, all participants will turn in their information car ds, which will detail their interest in specific individuals,” explained Ellithorpe. “Car ds will be collected, and after interest sheets have been r eviewed, participants will be contacted regarding common connections that were made.”

“In speed dating, you can recognize y our l ack o f c ompatibility with your date in seven minutes or less, compared t o a n ormal b ad d ate, which could drag on for an hour or mor e,” added Ellithorpe. “W e’ve all been

The budget contains a 2.9 percent increase in the tax levy fr om

$14,489,598 to $14,909,796. The budget also contains a tax rate estimated at $18.29 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The curr ent tax rate is $17.77 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

According to superintendent A. Paul Scott, the district board of education invited employees to suggest ways to reduce costs, receiving more than 130 suggestions. Cost reductions for July 1 forward, said Scott, are distributed across all support operations, instr uctional pr ogram and central of fice ar eas. Reductions include subscriptions to BOCES services by an estimated

Robinson to wrestle collegiately at the University of Buffalo

keith@denpubs.com PERU — It’s a program that is on the rise, sending six wrestlers to the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament this past season.

Now, a four-time New York State Champion is hoping that the University at Buf falo Bulls pr ogram will help him r each his next goal: National All-American.

“I’m hoping to be pre tty competitive in Division I and hoping to make it to the NCAA ’s in my first year and place right of f,” Arik Robinson, Peru’s wrestling star over the past

five seasons, said about his decision to sign with Buffalo.

Robinson signed a letter of intent to wrestle for the Mid-American Confer ence University May 5, of ficially joining teammate Patrick “Pappy” Hogan as a Division I athlete (Hogan had pr eviously accepted an offer to wrestle for the Ivy League’s Harvard).

“We are using this day to celebrate the accomplishments of out two great wrestlers in Pappy and Arik,” said Athletic Director Larry Ewald at the pr ess confer ence wher e Robinson signed his letter of intent to grapple for the Bulls. “We don’t get that happening around here too much.”

Indians head coach Mike Hogan said that the commitments of Robinson and his son doubles the amount of Division I athletes to come out of the program from two-to-four.

Robinson said that the key factors in his decision were his confidence in the coaching staff and the depth of the program.

“They have great coaches and a couple of guys at 125 that I can work with to help make me a gr eat wr estler in college,” Robinson said. “I saw that they had thr ee other guys there. I look at it as it is going to be a har der way for me to get onto the mat for the Bulls and get me to be a better wrestler.”

Currently, the Bulls r oster features fresh-

men Max and Mike Soria along with edshirt r freshmen Sean W alton at 125. The Soria brothers wrestled previously for Kings Park in NYSPHSAA Division I with Max finishing in thir d place and Mike finishing in fifth place at the 2010 NYSPHSAA wrestling tournament, while W alton wr estled for Palmyra-Macedon, who finished second at 125 in the 2009 NYSPHSAA state tournament and thir d at 1 19 in the 2008 tournament.

Robinson finished his career with a record of 180-10, winning one state title at 96, one at 103 and the last two at 112.

Kyle McCarthy tied the game for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh on a thr owing error, while Nathan Reynolds scored the game-winning run, also on an error.

McCarthy, Reynolds and Craig Botten had the lone hits for the Eagles, while John Pollock drove in both of W illsboro’s runs with a double in the fourth inning.

las, I have r eturned fr om yet another successful week-long fishing trip deep within the Adirondack wilds. I timed this one perfectly with ice out and my cr ew was r ewarded with plenty of spunky spring br ookies for our effort.

This was my annual trip into the St. Regis Canoe Area, an outing that has become a tradition for half a dozen of my fishing chums and I. Last year we celebrated my Dad’s 75th birthday there .

This year we dubbed the trip “Spirit of 76” in recognition of his B-day, even though he was unable to tag along because of work commitments.

Rest assur ed, you wer e ther e in spirit, pop.

Probably a good thing he missed this one anyway. While we caught a ton of fish, the atmosphere was dampened by five straight days of rain. Seriously , it started pouring last Sunday and did not stop until it turned to snow Thursday . Ponds ran high and brooks and rivers were roaring.

We’d head out in our canoes just long enough to get soaked, return for dry clothes and head out again. At one point, my buddy joked that he could have stood in an ice cold shower with his pack on for a day and come out dryer. We’re actually contemplating using that as a training exer cise prior to next year ’s jaunt.

There’s a thought — br ook tr out boot camp. Force cadets to march 5 miles through the for est carrying a Radisson and a 60pound r ucksack full of food and fishing equipment, while swatting black flies fr om

their for eheads without dr opping the 30-packs fr om under each arm.

Only a select few will make it, but they’ll be re warded with washing meals of cold Spaghetti O’s down with frozen beer after sleeping on the ground in a paper-thin bag in near sub zer o temperatures during driving rain and galeforce winds.

Youth bowhunting bill on governor’s desk

In other outdoor news, the state is poised to ink a bill allowing junior bowhunters to hunt big game at 12 years of age with adult supervision. The current age restriction is 14 years.

This is an important piece of legislation as it has been pr oven that intr oducing our youth to the sport of big game hunting at an early age incr eases the likelihood of them participating for life.

I also personally believe that bowhunting is an excellent way to intr oduce the young to hunting as it teaches patience and safety.

The bill has been passed by the state Senate and Assembly and now awaits only the governor ’s signature to become law this big game season. W

ithout a mentor, or the mentorship opportunities pr ovided through such traditional channels as scouting or 4-H, many rural youth will continue to lack the ability and know how necessary to ef fectively enjoy their surroundings.

If they are disconnected from nature, they will become strangers in their own land, and they will r emain so. They will suffer, and the community will be all the poore r as a result.

If they don’t use it, the place will never carry any value.

I fear this may be the first generation ofu-r ral “indoor childr en”, detached and lar gely disconnected from the abundance of natural pleasures r eadily available in their own backyard.

It should be obvious, but local youth must come to recognize the Adirondack Park is a very special place.

There is a reason the region continues to attract over ten million travelers every year, and they must understand.

We must learn to put aside the negative rhetoric, and all the sorry, old, antienviro-maniac nonsense that has plagued the region since the 1880’s. I know , I’ll take a lot of flack for saying so; but isn’t it about time to move on and to ecognize r what a tr uly incr edible place we’ve got. Need a reminder? Take a trip of 100 miles in any direction, you’ll be happy to return home.

I just returned from a week-long fishing trip in the St. Regis Canoe Area where the fish hit quite well despite the torrential rain. Not surprisingly, we found water temperatures and hatches to be running a few weeks behind this year.

May 15 from 9 a.m. to noon with pre-registration is at 8:30.

The event is aimed at those ages 3 to 15 and ther e will be prizes and r efreshments.

Spring Break Out Ride set

The Hague Fish & Game Club has scheduled its Spring Break Out Ride for Saturd ay, May 14. This event, which includes an ATV and horse ride, will start at the clubhouse at 9:30 a.m. The fee this year is $15 as the club

members will head onto the T&T lease and back onto club property.

All ATV riders must wear helmets and provide pr oof of insurance. Refr eshments will be available, a horseshoe tournament will start after lunch and music will be played into the night. Club of ficials would also like to r emind members that dues ar e due by July 1.
